Concept Generation Sense of Place project

A fusion of urban art and nature withheld in a quiet urban landscape. Both opposites, both in the same place, but work together so well.

CONCEPT GENERATION - DE1135 - ELISHA RONALD

RESEARCH I conducted research looking in to urban street art and nature based within an urban setting. I produced research using a range of different media and sources which strongly focussed around photography, illustration, paint, pro-markers and collage.

COLOUR & FABRICS When it came to deciding on what colours to use, I mainly focussed on urban street art. However, nature did have an effect on my decisons. The more basic colours, black, white and grey linked in with a fusion of them both. The brighter colours were more focussed on urban art but can still be linked with both areas.

ABSTRACT

I created these fabric manipulations by using different types of tie-dye effects. I chose to create these ones specifically using colours associated less with urban art and more with nature.

PRINTS

TURNED IN TO FABRICS I conducted research into prints and then went on to create my own. To create my prints I gathered areas of my primary research and then went on to edit them in photoshop to form repeated and singular patterns. I then used Bondaweb to transfer them on to fabric.

Brand and Message Magazine Project

Front cover

Above, is the chosen front cover I created which was decided by the group. I liked this one best as I thought being able to see the Tyne Bridge through the camera edit made it more personal to the issue. Also, the font and its placemen stand out but do not take interest away from the photo. We wanted the image to wrap around the magazine, so once our magazine was printed the front cover was just of the right side of the image above. We wanted the cover to be recognisable yet not obvious, to be interesting and relatable. The shots below are some of my other favourite designs which did not become the cover.

Photography Research

To fit alongside our theme and to make the front cover of our magazine stand out I researched abstract types of photography so that we could think of ideas of how to make our chosen front cover image effective yet not obvious. We wanted the main cover photograph to effectively represent our theme, obscure. Above are just a handful of the different types of techniques I found exciting and captivating. I especially liked the second image in which represented a scene in a futuristic, fast paced style.

A lot of research was carried out into how we could present the main types of photographs in our magazine. We wanted the photographs than ran alongside the article’s to be non-abstract as we want the viewers of our magazine to be able to see exactly what they are reading about so they do not get false information. However, we still want to make the photographs visually satisfying so that the viewer’s become interested. Above are some secondary sources of photography styles I thought would be good for our magazine.

Layout Experimentation

Extensive research was conducted in to what type of layout to have for our magazine. We all decided that we wanted a magazine spread that was simplistic yet effective. Composed in a suitable size for practicality. We also decided that we did not want the pages to look crammed. Above are some secondary sources that inspired us.

Photography Development Below, I have selected my favourite shots out of all of the photos I have taken from the Newcastle area which I may go on to include in the magazine.

As a group we decided it would be best that we do not change the photographs much as we wanted them to be clear and recognisable. So, I only experimented with adjusting proportions slightly so it can have a slightly air brushed effect without looking fake. I mainly experimented with brightness, contrast and shadows as I found them to be the most subtle yet effective
