Welcome from the Executive Director The story of Monash University began in 1958, when the vision was set in motion of a new university serving the needs of a growing population. The task was gigantic, and today Monash is Australia’s largest university, representing a diverse and rich culture of contemporary ideas. The story of what is now known as the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music began fifty years ago, in 1965, and we are excited to join with the School to celebrate this landmark. The Monash Academy Orchestra (MAO), nationally renowned for its ambitious programming and commitment to high performance standards, continues to surprise and delight. This season will include performances of Béla Bartók’s gothic, atmospheric opera Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, and a special concert to mark the School of Music’s 50th birthday with the return of distinguished alumnus, and Liszt specialist, Leslie Howard. Leslie will share the bill with one of the true masterpieces of the Western Canon, Beethoven’s Symphony No.9, with its immortal choral finale celebrating the human spirit. Our commitment to new Australian music will see world premieres of works by distinguished Monash staff, Associate Professor Thomas Reiner and Professor Mary Finsterer. The Centre for Theatre and
Performance commences a new education partnership with Malthouse Theatre, in Welcome to Nowhere, a commissioned work showcasing the talents of our students in a piece written by some of Australia’s most exciting and emerging writers. The multi-award winning Monash Art Ensemble will mark its first international release with the launch of Fabliaux by trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas at the Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival. International visitors to the School of Music will include leading US jazz luminaries Ray Anderson, Mark Helias and Nasheet Waits. The team at Monash University Academy of Performing Arts are delighted to present this program of events to our communities both within and surrounding our campuses. Please come and experience the joy of performance. I look forward to seeing you there.

Monash University Academy of Performing Arts presents
The Lost WWI Diary Written and performed by Damian Callinan Directed by Tim Overton Damian finds an old diary in a Warrnambool op shop. Is Paddy Callinan the mysterious digger his family never speak of? ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ meets ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’ as the three-time Barry nominee (Backyard Ashes, Spicks & Specks, Skithouse) brings the page’s characters to life and finds it’s a long way to Tipperary without GPS. Obsessed from a young age about all things ANZAC, Damian routinely circumnavigates all regional war memorials in search of diggers bearing his name. Finally he finds the diary that connects him to the legend! A renowned stand up and character comedian, Callinan breathes life into the subjects of the diary. He combines detailed research, hilarious but believable characterisations, black humour, absurdity and deft writing to swing the mood of the story from rollicking farce to aching pathos in a heartbeat. The Lost WWI Diary is proudly supported by Regional Arts Victoria, the Victorian Government through Arts Victoria, and the Community Support Fund. Please note this production is suitable for mature audiences.

The very epitome of Romantic music, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 is one of the most beloved concertos in the history of the modern keyboard. Appearing alongside the masterful orchestration and fiery drama of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol, Scriabin’s Third Symphony weaves a rich, textured canvas of romance and tragedy, as if from a film yet to be written.

Bartók’s only opera occupies a unique place in twentieth century music theatre. Although dark-hued and with only two characters, it has, nevertheless, astonishing theatrical power. The work concentrates on the relationship between Judith and Bluebeard, the gradual exposure of his possessions, domains, and, most importantly, psyche. Bartók’s command of atmosphere and orchestration is simply extraordinary. We are thrilled to be presenting two of Australia’s internationally acclaimed singers, Deborah Humble and Warwick Fyfe in the roles of Judith and Duke Bluebeard. Both singers received accolades during their appearances in the 2013 Melbourne Ring Cycle.

Mozart Symphony No.40 Stravinsky Concerto in D for Strings Mozart Violin Concerto No.5 Stravinsky Octet for Winds Mozart Symphony No.40
Friday 18 September
Eoin Andersen violin/director
Bookings via MAPA Box Office
Across the gulf of two centuries, Mozart and Stravinsky created distinctive works shaped and inspired by the rigor of classical forms. Stravinsky’s Octet for Winds, an early neo-classical masterpiece performed here by the wind section of the MSO, and the composer’s compact Concerto in D – led by MSO Concertmaster Eoin Andersen – are balanced by Mozart’s Violin Concerto, a youthful work of matchless elegance and execution. With its famous opening theme, Mozart’s Symphony No.40 hints at a deep disquiet beneath its trademark refinement.

In his Metamorphoses, Ovid recounts the mythological history of the ancient Greco-Roman world from the creation to his present day. Each of the stories contained within this extensive poetic volume are linked by the theme of transformation. This production is the result of students exploring these stories and transforming them into a group devised piece of musical theatre, an art form which derives its energy from the continuous theatrical transformations of speech, song, and dance. Perhaps it is fitting, that the work of a writer who found that he would always end up writing in verse, be transformed into song.

Tabla solo is a unique phenomenon in the art of drumming. Seldom does one come across a single percussive instrument holding its own for hours accompanied only by a melodic refrain, which marks the beats of the taal. Here, the performer interprets a series of preconceived compositions. The rich repertoire of compositions created by artistes who have experimented with form and tonal colour, and the charismatic styles evolved by masters of the tabla, have given the instrument a significant place in the world of percussion music. Some of the compositions are preconceived in totality, while others lend themselves to elaborations, thus placing demands on the interpretative and creative faculties of the performers.
Blackwood Ensemble was founded by Kenji Fujimura and Elizabeth Sellars to provide gifted students of the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music an opportunity to collaborate with professional musicians in a chamber music context. This unique staffstudent ensemble gave its first concert in 2012 and has included various performances with members of Duo Chamber Melange, Ensemble Liaison, Songmakers Australia, Sutherland Trio and Trio Anima Mundi – all ensembles which feature members of the Monash School of Music teaching staff.
The program will begin with a collaboration between Adrian McNeil on sarod and Aneesh Pradhan on tabla in a performance of Hindustani instrumental music. Adrian and Aneesh have performed and recorded together in India, Australia and Hong Kong.

Saxophonist and composer Rob Burke recorded a CD in New York last July with the acclaimed American pair of bassist Mark Helias and drummer Nasheet Waits – both musicians considered archetypal improvisers on the New York scene – together with Melbourne colleagues Paul Williamson (trumpet), Jordan Murray (trombone) and Paul Grabowsky (piano). The concept of the album was based on original compositions that informed free improvisation. The overarching theme being the ‘power of the idea’ with spontaneous improvisations that were perceived to be genuinely ‘in the moment’ as distinct from pre-conceived material.

‘World War One, or the Great War as it is often called, lasted for five years. This War, a manmade disaster mainly caused by nationalistic agendas and events, quickly spiralled out of control resulting in a conflict that literally spanned nearly the entire globe… The war also brought forth contributions in the arts —in poetry and literature, the visual arts and music, some of it written by Australians and New Zealanders. Much of this music has remained unknown until now, and some of it, written on Gallipoli and in France is deeply emotional… an ever-present reminder that the antidote to war lies in freedom, tolerance, respect for our neighbours, and honouring our country and its high ideals.’ – Lady Primrose Potter AC – Frà Richard Divall OBE AO
