ELISSA M. BRUGGEMAN ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO
# | ELISSABRUGGEMANPORTFOLIO2013
Within the pages of this book lie the last five years of my academic architectural career at Iowa State University. Each sketch, photograph, and rendering represent moments of exploration, struggle, realization, and if I was successful - a final moment of clarity. My personal definition of success for each project was not only measured by those defining, clarifying thoughts or images, but also on the process that led me to those specific conclusions. Trials, failures, and the elusive moments of success led me to the realization that architecture is not about buildings - it is about people. Architects have the ability to shape the world we live in for the better, and that is an exciting thought. More than anything, it is that thought which propels me towards a professional setting where I can continue to learn and grow as a designer. Thank you for taking the time to view my work. Enjoy,

BOSTON CONCERT HALL
2ND PLACE AWARD WINNER: CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATIONS INSTITUTE OF CENTRAL IOWA COMPETITION PROFILED: “REPEAT PERFORMANCE: ACOUSTICS AS A DATA-DRIVEN THEME IN COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN STUDIO” BUILDING TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH PAPER BY PROFESSORS TOM LESLIE AND KRIS NELSON PROFESSOR: KRIS NELSON PARTNER: MATT HEIRES FALL 2012 - Situated in the newly redeveloped East side of Boston, the chosen site for this contemporary music hall is separated from downtown by only the South Bay Channel. Alongside this bay runs a boardwalk which became a driving factor for the design and concept. By opening itself up to not only the existing path, but also the neighborhood and transportation hubs around it, the building acts as a symbol of projection and infiltration between the old and new parts of the city.

The deliberate integration of the main form into existing public space not only encourages entrance and views, but also emphasizes the projection of music and energy through a contemporary take on musical performance.

COLUMBUS MUSEUM FOR INNOVATIVE OBJECTS OF DESIGN
PUBLISHED: ‘DATUM,’ ISU JOURNAL OF ARCHITECTURE PROFESSOR: ROB WHITEHEAD INDIVIDUAL PROJECT FALL 2011 - Often times museums are much too quick to reveal their contents; sadly resulting in spoonfeeding patrons their art on a metaphorical silver platter. In opposition, this design involves the process of “hint, reveal, a first look, and then a second look” that not only showcases the objects within, but also speaks of the city, its existing architecture, and the people who call it home.

NEW YORK CITY CONDOS
PROFESSOR: DAN NAEGELE INDIVIDUAL PROJECT SPRING 2011 - Situated in the SoHo district of New York City, the program and resulting project are based upon the struggle between living in a prime real estate, corner condominium and the concurrent life of pedestrians at the street level below. Taking a vertical section through the city reveals layers that could be resurfaced in built form. The resulting form pulls itself back from the corner to enhance activities on the sidewalk while also servicing retail space on the ground level as well as units for the permanent inhabitants above.

SKETCHES & ANALYTICAL DRAWINGS
PROFESSORS: CAL LEWIS, KAREN BERMANN & FRANCESCO MANCINI INDIVIDUAL PROJECT SPRING 2012 - One way to document and investigate places while traveling abroad in Europe was through sketching. Learning to simplify lines and shades proves that nothing on paper is sacred and many iterations may be necessary in order to best capture the essence of an object or place.

PHOTOGRAPHY: CAPTURING TEXTURE
INDIVIDUAL PROJECT SPRING 2012 - The ability to reproduce a specific moment in time through a single, still image is utterly the most beautiful aspect of photography. Capturing different textures allows a three-dimensional sense of materiality and space to be regained and become apparent through a one-dimensional print of an image.

BUILT WORK: SUSTAINABLE FURNITURE
FEATURED: IOWA STATE SUSTAINABILITY SYMPOSIUM PROFESSOR: CHRIS MARTIN SPRING 2013 - When given the challenge to repurpose or build a new furniture form made from only recycled or reused material, the initial driving factor was function. The design for this bench was based on the need for seating, storage and an option of flexibility between the two - made entirely of pieces scavenged from a basement, surplus sale, junk yard, and loading dock.
> > > > > > SUSTAINABLEFURNITURE | 53
One broken side table, two junkyard fence posts, two end caps, numerous dismantled wooden pallets, and over 40 baby food jar lids were used to create a bench and storage unit which cost only $12.

ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY
WEST END ARCHITECTURAL SALVAGE BUILDING PROFESSOR: CAMERON CAMPBELL FALL 2012 - As the subject of an architectural photography course, West End Architectural Salvage in Des Moines, IA presented itself as a building with a story of continued use and a rich life-span of over a hundred years.

Hiding under a layer of paint, squeezed between shelves upon shelves of used and worn pieces, and found in dusty corners was a story waiting to explored through photography.

Taken on three different facades of the building, this series illustrates the character that can be found in even a simple material such as brick.
