What to do, where to go

Whether you want to exercise with a large group of friends, or just a couple of close ones, there are endless ways to bond together, whilst getting in a workout! We suggest to meet with your group, once or twice a week

(ensuring that you organise a date and time that suits everyone.) The stream of possible things to do is endless. Try starting off with a simple training session in your local park or by the beach. You could attempt sprints, squats and

Unless you really like to be alone when exercising (and we all do sometimes), it has actually been proven that exercising with an encouraging and positive group of friends is beneficial. A recent study from the United States has found that fitness can actually be contagious. Interestingly,

Fun & interesting ways to

become more active 1DANCING

Dancing is (believe it or not) one of the best ways to become fitter. Not only is there the benefit of the social aspect, but you barely notice that you are exercising! Dancing (what ever style you prefer) has been proven to: burn calories, improve your health (through strengthening of your muscles), allowing

PILATIES

Pilaties is often confused with yoga, and although they are similar in ways, they are also contrasting forms of training. Taking regular pilaties classes is a great way to tone as well as sculpt the body. Not only does this resistance based type of exercise allow for improved flexibility and posture, but it even stimulates the metabolism as well as reduces stress!

3

SKIPPING

Everyone can skip. It really isn’t that difficult of a movement, and all you need is 20-30 minutes of time. By repeating this simple process of skipping each day, you will soon see a vast improvement of muscle tone in both the upper and lower body. The great thing about skipping is that it is an all over body workout, as it primarily uses the abdominals as well as the legs, shoulders and arms for moving the rope. Best of all- skipping doesn’t cost a scent (after you’ve bought the rope of course) and you can do it in the comfort of your own home.

Everyone has been there. That moment when your self-confidence drops and get’s kicked in the guts. Maybe because of a bad breakup, a rude remark or simply getting down about your appearance. How to get the look

natural makeup

Step one: Perfect and even out your skin tone Even if you don’t have perfect skin, (which lets face it-most of us don’t)-it is important to ensure you skin is clean and fresh. Start by washing your face with a cleanser to ensure your skin is free of any dirt. Then use a moisturizer to even out your skin tone and add moisture.

We recommend: Neutrogena Moisture Oil Free Formula $9.99

Step two: Lightly cover any problem areas

Try: NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer (Plus it contains an SPF! (30)

Step three: Choose a warm check colour Instead of using a powder blush, opt for a ‘cream blush’. Cream blushes are more natural, easier to blend into the skin and give a natural flush to the face. Try rose and peachy tones.

We recommend: M·A·C Creme blend Blush

30

photography:Eliza Cusack, www.polyvore.com

Using a lighter alternative to foundation-tinted moisturizer, apply a small amount over the face with fingertips and make sure to blend onto the neckline. Tinted moisturizer generally suits all skin types and gives a great amount of coverage, without making you look like a ‘cake face.’

Step four: Add a touch of illuminator This small step can make all the difference. Most girls are unaware of this product , which adds a dewy, highlight to the face and ensures you glow in all the right places. Apply to the top of the cheekbones and on the temples of the forehead.

TIP to exaggerate this

Try: Victoria's Secret VS PRO Radiant FX Face Illuminator

look, try adding some winged eyeliner with a black pencil liner as well as a bolder lip colour.

Step five: Enhance your lashes

photography:Eliza Cusack, www.polyvore.com

Without over doing it, a few strokes of mascara can open up your eyes and make them appear larger. Using basic, black mascara, add several swipes to your lashes. Try to avoid going overboard if you still want to achieve a ‘natural’ look.

We recommend: Maybelline Volum' Express One By One

Step six: Finish with a touch of tinted lip balm

Don’t be afraid to wear this look, its works for all skin tones!

To finish this look, and to add a pretty flush to the lips, add a touch of tinted lip balm. The shade you choose should be close to your natural lip colour. Using you fingertip, start from the middle and blend out.

We love: Clinique Chubby Stick Intense Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm

Skin fix

It has been said over and over that skin care and protection in teenage years is essential. We caught up with dermatologist Dr Nina Wines, as she shared his tips regarding the complex world of skin products and care.

Nina says, “Sun protection is the most important piece of advice I can give. Follow a routine for your skin care. 1 Cleanse, moisturize 1 and use sunscreen during the day. A NEW STATE OF

MIND

I’m sure you are all aware of the ‘Yoga Trend’ (yes it is a thing), that is sweeping the world right now. Suddenly yoga has become so hot, so ‘in’, so modern. But are we in love with practicing yoga or just the thought of it? It seems that every celebrity has caught on to the trend and forever praises the practice;

Miranda Kerr, Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Aniston, just to name a few. Yoga is derived from Buddhism and aims to focus on the mind and the body’s breathing. This practice may seem ‘stylish’, but truly does have many benefits, such as helping you become less stressed, especially when those big exams roll around.

“I was in yoga the other day. I was in full lotus position. My chakras were all aligned. My mind is cleared of all clatter and I'm looking out of my third eye and everything that I'm supposed to be doing. It's amazing what comes up, when you sit in that silence.” Ellen DeGeneres36

look cute whilst doing it!

We caught up with our favourite yoga instructor Nicole, who believes that yoga really is the key to happiness. So, how long have you been learning the practice of yoga for? Well, I have been practicing yoga for nearly seven years. I started right after I graduated from high school. High school was a tough time for me, so I always wish I had found yoga then. After we graduated my best friend took me to my first class, and that was it. I haven’t stopped practicing since. I started my training to be a teacher two years ago, and have been teaching now for just over a year. Have you travelled to any exotic or amazing places for yoga? I haven’t yet, but I would love to go to Peru to practice yoga. My friend will be running a retreat there within the next year, and it looks like the most amazing and beautiful place. How do you feel that yoga helps one’s overall wellbeing? Yoga helps one’s overall wellbeing in many ways. We live most of the time not noticing our body and our breath. Sometimes it can feel like we just go through the motions of everyday without being aware of how we really feel. I believe that yoga helps us to become aware of how we feel physically and emotionally, and can give us the tools to not only open the body, but to free up tension in order to find space to rest down and let in. The first time you practice yoga it can feel completely strange, to move your body in a way that you never have before. It can give you a great sense of body awareness. Furthermore, it relieves the tension of muscles, can free up the joints and give the body an overall workout. With a focus of teenage girls, how do you feel yoga helps to reduce stress? The main way that yoga helps to reduce stress is through the breath. Breathing is such an important focus in a yoga practice, though not very commonly known. Many people believe yoga is all about stretching, but this only makes up less than one quarter of a yoga practice. To work with breath can help reduce stress immensely. When we’re stressed we tend to breathe through the mouth, and the breath sits in the chest rather than the tummy. This is because the sympathetic (fight or flight) nervous system is taking over. By coming back to the breath, and taking a few moments to move through the breath and bring it to the belly, count it out and slow it down, we can change how we feel and the running of the nervous system. It’s a simple practice but so important.

Do you have any tips or tricks for doing yoga at home, and how often do you think it should be done in order to be most effective? I think the biggest tip for doing yoga at home is to work with how you feel on that particular day. Each day is different, and when practicing in a class sometimes you don’t always get what you feel you need in the body. In terms of how often you practice, I would say at least every week. It can be easy to lose momentum and strength without a regular practice. However, time limits are often a big issue. Even as a yoga instructor, I sometimes only find time to practice a full session once a week! It might be that you practice only for fifteen minutes every other day and that is just as effective as practicing for an hour every week or few days. What is the central focus or the aim of yoga practice in your opinion and what do you love most about yoga? I think a central focus of yoga is working all together with the body, mind and breath. However, I think the main aim of yoga is to have fun. It’s not supposed to be serious or too much of a challenge, especially if you’re doing it for yourself and because you enjoy it. It’s just about finding where you need to be on that day. The thing that I love most about yoga is what it has given me in my life. Not only is it the one thing I ever found that I love to do every day but it has given me some of the most amazing opportunities and friends in my life. It helped me through a lot of the worst times in my life. I love that it’s always a journey. I don’t think anyone is ever “accomplished” at yoga – that’s why we call it a yogapractice rather than a yoga-do. You can learn something new every class, so it never ends.

Have you become

OBSESSED with technology?

In today’s world, it seems that everyone is consumed with online communication and information. As teenagers, it’s not uncommon to be constantly glued to your phone or computer. Although this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it could be holding you back from experiencing certain things, that only a teenager will be able to. Statistics have found that “93% of teens aged 12-17 go online and 73% of teens are on a social network.”

Why this generation? It has been said that this generation are made up of those who are ‘highly connected’. But what do teens find so captivating about the internet and technology? As one aspect, it can be seen as a form of procrastination, where teenagers turn to in a time of stress, as a way of coping. Another reason could be the fact that it (particularly social networks such as Facebook) is becoming a form of self expression and a way of forming self-identity. The internet allows teens to express their personality, without making them seem cocky, or causing them to risking their ego.

Signs you are obsessive You become anxious when you phone dies If you phone dies, do you find yourself constantly wondering about who may have messaged or called you?

You are texting/are online at inappropriate times If you find that you are always on your laptop or phone at dinner, when people are talking to you or even in class at school, then you need to give the technology a rest!

You find that you are getting distracted (in public even!) It is really getting out of hand if you find that you are missing important information or if you find yourself so zoned into the online world that you miss seeing something

or someone.

Advice The best thing you can do, is simply put down the phone or computer for a day and get active! Spend a day at the park, riding your bike of going for a long walk. You can also try to read more (whether that be a book or a magazine) you’ll find that it relaxes you and clears your mind.

Wellbeing Main writer: Eliza Cusack

Our young teenage models (Ella, Odile, Sammy and Nina) that have been featured throughout the magazine, happily volunteered to be apart of it. What we wanted to make sure of, was that none of the images were retouched or photoshopped in any way.

We believe it is really important not to portray unrealistic bodies and women in magazines as it effects many teenage girls (and women in general) more than is thought.

Particularly in recent years, many of the photoshopped pictures in the media has caused a lot of controversy and discussion. It is silly to believe that these completely retouched bodies are something to strive for and whilst some magazines are making improvements, it is still a continuous issue.
