THE ALCHEMY OF SPACE Year 2016 - 2017 Program Translations Across Media Studio Thesis Award Distinguished Thesis Research Award Professors Elizabeth Riorden | Aarti Karnaker Mara Marcu | Dr. Dana Griffith

Literature builds whimsical lands of the conceptual, worlds which merge the known and the unknown. Architecture is a tectonic manipulation, actively engaging the core elements to conceal and reveal vital data essential to an understanding of the whole, similar to narrative strategies active in literature. This thesis aimed to unearth the existing relationships between architecture and the text by examining translations across LL media. Meaning derived from a text allows for the capacity of expression to permeate traditional material barriers, taking away the dividing line between the disciplines of literature and the visual arts.

In the world of Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, the reader and Santiago, the protagonist, seek out a pilgrimage route given in a dream. Guided by an invisible force, the elements, and a universal language of the metaphysical realm, they search for and discover a new perspective in the magical realism text of The Alchemist. This thesis serves as a pilgrimage of growth, questioning the perception of spatial creation and meaning through our lens of the text using themes and narrative construction strategies from within the allegory of the unnatural narrative structure. This thesis investigated a derived meaning and translation through a different medium and it’s effect on the typical architectural design method.

Depth psychologist, Bill Plotkin, Ph.D, calls out the life stages of human development, termed the Eco-centric Stages of Human Development in collaboration principles of the self archetypes associated with Carl Jung Plotkin’s steps highlight a journey of enrichment of the individual’s ego and selfactualization. This diagram illustrates the stages of human development by charting Santiago’s journey through space. The

experience of the journey is translated into a series of transformations based on a progression through time, resulting in a mediation that presents an altered insight and reading of architecture’s reality. By referencing the narrative strategies and themes established in The Alchemist, the design parallels a similar technique in utilizing the architectural elements to portray their allegory of space and time.

The diagram above narrates the story’s organizational structure. The seven circles orbit along a larger circle, flirting with the understood and the conceptual realities in which the protagonist exists. The seven smaller circles represent the moments of convergence, when major turning points, when ascension of understanding exits and enters a new reality or level along the journey. Each spatial narrative builds itself by the convergence of

story object + narrative structure + element of place.

PARKLET ON PLEASANT Year 2015 Program Community Intervention Studio MetroLAB Professor Michael Zaretsky In Collaboration with Alex Bucher | Kaaviyaa Nagarajan | Emmanuel Manolukas | AJ Suever | Courtney Lutke | Kate Meleo | Katie Simonse | Ghislaine Garcia | Crystal Collado | Kellie Dunaway | Stefan Garcia | Giovanna Lang

Pleasant Street exists as a forgotten corridor. This studio aimed to achieve the connection of two heavily programmed sites in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, Findlay Market LL

and Washington Park, by engaging Pleasant Street. The Parklet was conceived at the end of a multi-stage process focused on community engagement in the final product to help activate an under-utilized connector between two large points of interest in the community. Three events were staged in order to address community needs and interests during the activation of Pleasant Street, This studio was a collaborative design build studio funded by the University’s metroLAB organization. During this studio I helped design and fabricate multiple parklet and neighborhood installation proposals. Ultimately, the Parklet, a place to gather and commune, was decided upon as the best design intervention for Pleasant Street.

UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY CHEMISTRY-PHYSICS BUILDING RENOVATION Architect Omni Architects Year 2017 - Ongoing Program Higher Education Lab Building Location Lexington, KY Phase Programming - CD

The University of Kentucky’s Chemistry-Physics Building renovation began as a third floor laboratory renovation on a concrete frame building built in the 1950’s for Chemistry P

Research. In its current condition, the building fais to provide

LL

a stable environment. Leaks and wild temperate fluctuations due to a failing curtain wall threaten the output from Chemistry Researchers and create a hostile environment for all the occupants. Omni’s original scope was exclusive to a total renovation of only the third floor, during programming it became clear the building needed upgrades to the facade, HVAC system , a new penthouse, loading dock, service elevator, and stair tower to make the renovation worthwhile. Adding to the challenge of amending the above issues in a manner sensitive to the budget, the client also requested to continue to occupy the building through construction with minimal impact on the researchers. As a design team member, I worked closely with the team lead on the design progression of the third floor renovation, attended regular consultant meetings and faculty meetings, prepared interior renderings for client meetings and helped coordinate RCPs with MEP, and developed the loading dock. I also developed bathroom cores for the building that could be repeated using university standards and ADA standards, and collaborated with the university on an up-to-date room

UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE MEDICAL RESEARCH BUILDING 55A THIRD & FOURTH FLOOR RENOVATION Architect Omni Architects Year 2018 Program Higher Ed. Medical Research Building Location Louisville, KY Phase Schematic Design

The University of Louisville Medical Research Building 55a Renovation of the third and fourth floor was a Programming and Schematic Design exercise. In addition to the third and fourth floor, the project scope included a skin replacement LL

on an historic building and a seventh floor laboratory research area for faculty and students. The third and fourth floor lacked access to natural light and effective spaces for researchers to collaborate with one another. As a design team member, I worked closely with the team lead on interventions to create a designated entry point for easy control needed by the small administrative staff, which functions without a receptionist, place-making in a limited area, on each floor for gathering and storage, and community clusters for each point of research using workstations as building blocks. The floor plate is heavily populated with workstations to accommodate the program needs, interventions (seen in red) created secondary spaces for gathering through the use of textural applications, storage, and seating with overhead lighting, light, and changing material. Each field of research has their own community within where they can huddle together to meet by their workstations or disperse into other collaboration areas peppered throughout.

923 FOLSOM STREET Architect Solomon Cordwell Buenz Year 2016 Program Residential Mid-Rise Location San Francisco, CA Phase Construction Documentation

923 Folsom is a mid-rise mixed-use development project on the cusp of the Castro and Mission Districts in San Francisco. For 923 Folsom, I worked with a team of two in the office, LL

and two remotely, to complete Construction Documentation for 923 Folsom. I completed red line corrections, fire safety compliance, LEED bike parking requirements, life safety code compliance, roof details, and unit kitchen and bathroom elevations. In addition to construction documentation, I also helped complete renderings and meeting coordination with the team.

CENTURY PLAZA RESIDENTIAL TOWERS & HOTEL PRESERVATION Architect Marmol Radziner Year 2015 Program Residential Tower & Historic Hotel Preservation

Location Los Angeles, CA Phase Schematic Design

The Schematic Design exercise in collaboration with I.M Pei Architects was the development of a linear strip of land located behind the Century Plaza Hotel into two residential towers. Additionally, Marmol Radziner was tasked with the preservation of the hotel.

LL

Marmol Radziner developed floor plan layouts which fit into the shell and core designed by I.M Pei Architects. My role was to develop schematic plans and unit layout possibilities for the various floor unit plans requested by the developers, determined by bays and unit square footage. Renderings were provided by I.M Pei Architects. Century Plaza Hotel Restoration and preservation was intended to bring a once grand hotel back to it’s former glory. The slider doors were not only not ADA compliant but also did not meet LA County’s required wind load minimum.

all images courtesy of Marmol Radziner and I.M Pei Associates 42

My task was to help the team come up with a better solution for bringing the balcony to interior transition pieces up to code, while also finding a slider which met ADA and wind load minimums. I met with multiple company representatives to discuss and determine best practices for updating. Ultimately, the team decided on customized sliders.
