Is the ‘Demise’ of the PC Exaggerated?

A lot of people nowadays are exchanging cash for iPads just because it is the must-have gadget of the century. Because of this, a lot of people are predicting that the end of the desktop PC is at hand. While these predictions are very hard to make, the reality is, this prediction has always been made whenever a new desktop PC replacement becomes popular. It has been predicted for years, but it has never came true. This was just the same with the radio, which was predicted to fade away with the coming of newspapers and TV, but that did not really happen, did it? Even with new gadgets like ultrabooks, netbooks and tablet PCs, desktop PCs will always be there, an ever-present fixture in the hi-tech, sleek and modern office. There will always be a place for it in Internet and gaming cafés, as well as with PC enthusiasts who are constantly challenged to build a desktop PC from scratch with the latest and the greatest parts. These are the reasons why computer manufacturers still cannot let go of their business of making parts for the desktop PC because there are still people who are willing to buy them. Even with the various pronouncements that we are now living in the age of tablet PCs and other mobile devices, there are still a lot of people who believe in the power of PCs. Just last week, Paul Otellini, CEO of Intel, the company known for producing the majority of processors in PCs and laptops, said reports counting out personal computers and their death are grossly exaggerated. But industry insiders can say Otellini’s statements are just brought about by his company’s huge stake in ultrabooks, very thin laptops released just a month ago.

The desktop PC is still the hardware of choice for those companies who handle and process large a large amount of data every single day. The desktop PC provides the muscle needed to do this Herculean task, which might be too much for a laptop or a tablet PC to handle. Work becomes more efficient and productivity is higher if they use these workhorses. Most tablet PCs, even the most advanced and popular models do not have the storage space, connectivity options, and processor speed to handle all the hard work. Another reason for the preference of desktop PCs is that they can work even if offline. There are still people who want to do things privately even encoding data and, of course, safekeeping their data from would-be hackers. Most of a tablet PC’s functions are connected to its programs or apps in tablet PCspeak. A majority of apps can only function when the tablet PC is connected to the internet. Tablet PCs only get connected through a 3G or a Wi-Fi connection, which is not as reliable as a cable connection that desktops usually have. With all these reasons, even if there are a lot of people who are exchanging cash for iPads, the desktop PC is still here to stay.
