MORE JUNK 7

A first year studio project, More Junk focus was how “junk” or “leftover” lots could be transformed into medium density housing, with each unit being no more than 60m2. The solution was to create 4 different buildings, each housing between 2-6 units. The spaces between the buildings act as a transition between the public street and the homes, as the site is a corner lot. Acknowledging the fact that a project is never truly complete; the next step to improve this project would be to remove the central stair access, and add private entrances for each unit.

Oasis 13

Located in Aswan, Egypt, this desert oasis is designed to provide shade for the traveller; allowing them a moment of seated relaxation. The thick, solid concrete walls provide shade and act as a thermal mass; absorbing light during the day and releasing it during the cold nights. The light grey colour reflects light, keeping the structure relatively cool. The structure is open to the north, limiting the direct sunlight that enters the oasis, and allowing a slight breeze into the space. The small opening in the top allows for ventilation and brings light into the space during the day. The sitting area is set into the ground as the ground temperatures are lower than the air temperatures during the day, keeping the space cool.

MAKER’S SPACE 17

As a culmination of the first semesters studio, students were asked to design a “Maker’s Space, a place for a maker to live, work, and exhibit. In response to this, I created a long rectangle that stretches from the road to the river, with, two defined spaces within it; the living space and the working space, connected by publically accessible exhibit spaces. The site was important to the design, long and narrow like the building, it is adjacent to a sculpture garden and includes a river walk that pass through my designed building.

The Creative Incubator A Domestic Experiment

23

While analyzing 39 Water Street South, a student housing building in Galt; we encountered a lack of use in common spaces. To remediate this issue we focused on creating an installation in the living and dining space of this seven-tenant household to transform it into an area of conversation and inspiration. Through the transformation of this domestic space we created an area that can be effectively inhabited by all occupants and provides a basis for conversation and collaboration of innovative ideas.

WESTMOUNT 27

156 Westmount is a dual program micro institution. It acts as a library and a hacker’s lab. Keeping in mind that Libraries tend to very open, a place for community to come together, I strived to provide places for solitary work; a place individuals can work alone or in a small group, but still sense the publicness of the library. In order to achieve this, there are a variety of pods, which at as study spaces as well as light wells. The largest pod can act as a hacker lab, and a small group study space, the medium size as an individual reading or work space, and the smallest as a children’s reading space.
