LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

“If you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life.” I found my niche — a place to express myself artistically with plants and landscapes. I approach each design as if I’m being commissioned to make a custom piece of art by the client.

With each project, I try to do all the good I can, whenever I can, wherever I can regardless of the scale of the project. As landscape architects we have the unique position to make choices that allow outdoor living spaces to be ecologically sound without sacrificing aesthetics. The true heart of the profession is using a multidisciplinary approach to realize the full potential of a design. This approach furthers me to my goal of having a lasting positive impact on society and the environment.

[purpose]

To enhance the cohesion of the community through activities and recreation for all ages and abilities.

[meaning]

Honoring the history of the site while amplifying the voices in the community to produce a design that represents their needs and desires.

SITE INVENTORY

ESTABLISHING TRUST

The first community engagement meeting consisted of multiple activities to determine what programmatic elements meant the most to the community. Categories of programmatic elements included amenities, activities, and plant/color preferences.

Existing outdoor hallways typical in the interior courtyards. Original gymnasium that is used by the community center.

GETTING FEEDBACK

After the design team created three design alternatives, we met with a smaller focus group that included council members of the community center to hone in on a final design.

[quick stats]

VOLUNTEER PROJECT

Three volunteer projects were created for the community center— one by each design team member. I was personally responsible for creating a beginning-to-end volunteer planting day for the courtyards.

FINAL MEETING

For the final presentation, our design team member Brooke Freeman attended the annual budget meeting for the community center to discuss the proposed design, cost estimates, and to deliver hard copies of implementation documents and volunteer projects. The council of the community center is using the material to continue to write grants for the community center.

PRESERVATION

MIMOSA HALL

Roswell, GA

Professor Alfie Vick

[purpose]

To restore the historic gardens and also reframe the idea of Mimosa Hall into a historic site that can also serve as public green space.

[meaning]

The history of the land is embedded with slavery, ethnic cleansing, and war tragedies. Memorializing these tragedies for the public enhances the meaning of the space.

SITE INVENTORY

The Piedmont Preserve group has 55 acres of greenspace in Athens, GA. The group regularly uses the property for running groups, public use of mountain bike trails, and hosts a summer camp to learn about the naturally occuring ecologies in the piedmont.

The composite site inventory to the left shows the plant communities, specimen trees, wetland and stream buffers. Existing easements, infrastructure, and trails are also shown.

REFINING THE CONCEPT

The programming could be seperated into three themes: recreation, restoration and education. A concept map was made for each theme, maximizing the theme in each one. Then, a composite concept map was made to inform the final design.

The proposed design for the residence features a pool and hot tub, ample lawn space for play, an outdoor kitchen and herb garden, and a private patio off of the master suite. The homeowners requested a private drive and one for guests, leading to the horshoe driveway with room for two cars to park without blocking traffic flow.

[purpose]

A family with teenage children are investing in their dream home. They’re looking to create an outdoor living space that is both fun and functional.

[meaning]

The design does create spaces for family fun, but also focuses on special touches for the parents in their new dream home.

The home was purchased by a couple with adult children that are transitioning to having their MIL live on the same property as them. As part of the design, the garage with the MIL suite above was sited. There is a large emphasis on the plantings and less lawn space to restore the understory of the existing trees.

G. IMPROVED VEHICLE CIRCULATION

A B C D E F G 30

The existing driveway when the home was purchased had a slope of 17%. The goal was to regrade the driveway to make it a maximum of 14% slope at any given point. The solution to the left features a maximum of 12.5% slope and a minimum of 5.7% slope.

Trees impacted were calculated using the Atlanta Tree Recompense calculation. All tree losses were ameliorated in the planting plan, resulting in no fees for tree removal.
