ASSINIBOINE PARK CONSerVATORY - THE LEAF AT CANADA’s DIVERSITY GARDENS
KPMB Architects Toronto, Canada Project location: Assiniboine Park, Winnipeg, Manitoba Project info: 90,000 SF / CAD $74M Role: Project Architect 2014 - 2015 A botanical conservatory in the 21st century has the potential to play a critical role in shaping the perception, interaction and understanding of nature and sustainability. Designing a new home for the Assiniboine Park Conservatory in Winnipeg, a city of climate extremes, is challenging the architectural expression for this multi-use landform biodome leverages mechanical and structural constraints in an iconic form. The main architectural element, the conservatory roof, is dome-shaped structure comprised of tensile cable trusses and an ETFE (advanced plastic) cushion skin. Programs contained in the building include tropical biomes, public space, education initiatives, administrative offices, a restaurant, and event venues. The project is currently in Design Development, with expected completion in 2019. The project was awarded an Autodesk Revit Technology Conference North America Innovation Award (2015) for development of new digital design tools for complex geometry and 3D printing techniques. I was responsible for project design, staffing, consultant coordination, schedule and budget.

SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS & INTERNATIONAL INITIATIVES, PRINCETON UNIVERSITY
KPMB Architects Toronto, Canada Project location: Princeton, New Jersey Project info: 200,000 SF / USD $110M Role: Architect 2012 - 2014 The re-purposing of the Princeton School of Economics building from its former use as Frick Chemistry (1929) will participate in Princeton University’s master plan vision to build academic neighborhoods and provide much-needed space for expanded teaching and research. The renovated building will be at the center of the social sciences and humanities departments and provide a new home for the Economics Department, International Initiatives and the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies. The design focuses on transforming a collegiate Gothic building into a light-filled learning environment while preserving historic character. Contemporary interventions include three glazed rooftop pavilions and a three-storey atrium that infills a void in the original cruciform plan. As architect for the building’s public spaces, I orchestrated assembly space design, and established the new campus standard for business classroom design. I managed the $4 million restoration process for 282 heritage windows, and oversaw on-site construction.

COMMON ASSEMBLY i
Decolonizing Architecture / Art Residency Beit Sahour, Palestine Project location: Centre d’Art Neuchâtel (CAN), Neuchâtel, Switzerland Project info: 1000 SF, CHF 15.000 Role: Architect-in-Residence Fall 2011 Decolonizing Architecture / Art Residency, Common Assembly I is the result of an eight week art and architecture residency program completed in the summer of 2011, based in the Palestinian West Bank village of Beit Sahour, outside Bethlehem. Residency work focused on a critical examination of the role played by architecture in the occupation of the Palestinian territories. The product of the residency took the form of several exhibition installations that set up arenas of speculation for new and proactive uses of existing architecture. The focus of the residency is an abandoned Palestinian parliament building in East Jerusalem – a parliament that has never been used. The project began with the discovery that the building was constructed on a political border. The centerpiece of the multimedia installation is a 1:1 scale section of the abandoned Palestinian parliament building in East Jerusalem. The suspended stair section is a three-dimensional extrusion of border architecture. I was responsible for exhibition design and gallery installation coordination, in collaboration with an international and interdisciplinary team.

PUBLICATIONS
0047 Oslo, Norway Project location: Oslo, Norway Role: Publications Editor & Project Manager 2011
As Publications Editor at 0047, I produced written and graphic content that widened thought and debate on architecture as a public concern. I assisted in launching and administering Europan 11, the world’s largest design competition for young architects to propose architecture and urban planning schemes for sites across Europe. I was responsible for editing the Europan 11 Norway Book of Results. As Project Manager for the Europan 11 Forum of Cities and Juries, which brought together the 17 national Europan structures, I published the Europan Forum Oslo Program and structured the forum as a series of debates, working groups, architectural excursions and adjudication for members of the 14 juries and 49 sites involved in Europan. I also coordinated the year-long cultural production of the National Association of Norwegian Architects centennial anniversary, and edited Norway’s Year of Architecture Festival Program.

GEORGE BROWN COLLEGE WATERFRONT HEALTH SCIENCES CAMPUS
KPMB Architects Toronto, Canada Project location: Toronto, Ontario Project info: 160,000 SF / CAD $140M Role: Associate Architect 2009 - 2010 George Brown College expanded its urban campus network with the Waterfront Health Sciences Campus, located on the shore of Lake Ontario in the heart of Toronto’s rapidly evolving waterfront. As part of the largest ongoing urban development project in North America, the purpose-designed facility manifests an integrated healthcare delivery concept by clustering the schools of Dental Health, Health and Wellness, Health Services Management and Nursing under one roof. With LEED Gold certification, the design leverages the lake and park-facing site by maximizing views and access to outdoor space. The building participates in the community by animating the precinct, creating a vertical campus that is home to 3,500 students and 500 faculty. I orchestrated public space design and zoning approvals, led visioning presentations to client groups, and oversaw on-site construction administration.

MIKE & OPHELIA LAZARIDIS QUANTUM-NANO CENTER, UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO
KPMB Architects Toronto, Canada Project location: Waterloo, Ontario Project info: 260,000 SF / CAD $130M Role: Associate Architect Summer 2008, 2009 - 2010 The design of the Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum-Nano Center at the University of Waterloo creates a sophisticated platform for research and innovation in the fields of quantum computing and nanotechnology - fields which reveal previously unimagined insight to the world and universe. Developing an architectural solution to facilitate these two disciplines in their work involved engaging researchers - both theorists and experimentalists - in comprehensive workshops to understand their processes and patterns of study. The Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) and the Department of Nanotechnology Engineering each occupy their own ‘building’ above a shared podium that houses laboratories, a cleanroom, and informal gathering space to catalyze exchange between scientists, faculty, students and visitors. I was responsible for conducting building envelope material studies and on-site construction administration for the project.

LIGHT PLAY, LUMINATO FESTIVAL
KPMB Architects Toronto, Canada Project location: Yonge - Dundas Square, Toronto, Ontario Project info: 7,000 SF / CAD $0 (pro bono) Role: Graduate Student Intern Summer 2008 Light Play, an urban art installation for Luminato 2008, Toronto’s annual Festival of Arts and Creativity, plays on the concept of a 1950’s dance hall. Light Play transformed the open concrete public platform of Yonge-Dundas Square into an interactive, playful and intimate gathering space for over one million people who attended Luminato’s free outdoor concerts and dance lessons. Over 200 illuminated PVC balloons were suspended over the Square. The balloons were tethered together by an intricate web of nautical rope and fitted with lights that were controlled and programmed to change color to the sounds of the audience and live music below. The installation was strategically developed to produce virtually no waste. All materials were donated or re-used; lighting and audio-visual equipment were rented, balloons were donated to the Department of Earth and Space Science and Engineering at York University for atmospheric research, 10,000 feet of nautical rope and four 40 foot timber poles were donated to selected camps and organizations.

TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL BELL LIGHTBOX
KPMB Architects Toronto, Canada Project location: Toronto, Ontario Project info: 175,000 SF, budget withheld Role: Graduate Student Intern Summer 2007 A fusion of architecture and film - the design for the Bell Lightbox and Festival Tower was conceived on an epic scale to create a ‘city of cinema’ within downtown Toronto, which hosts one of the most important annual international film festivals. Located in the heart of Toronto’s media and entertainment district, the architecture of the Bell Lightbox injects energy into the precinct and reflects the diversity and openness of the city. A 5-storey mixed-use podium establishes the building’s cultural image on the streetscape, while the 42-storey condominium point tower commands the skyline. The transition between podium and tower culminates in a monumentally-scaled stepped roof. The volumes of the cinema theaters, ranging from 80 to 550 seats, are expressed within the building and on the exterior elevations. I was part of the design team, and managed design of the project’s theater interiors.
