Quasar lines up on defense at Pres Day Invite. (pg. 4) Annie Yang
Dear Family, Friends, and Alumni, The past couple of months of Quasar have been really exciting, and we are delighted to share our progress with you. From surprising teams with our perseverance at President’s Day Invite to finding our strength in our mental focus and winning Delaware Classic, this team has so much to be proud of. We continue to prove to ourselves that this team can step it up with beautiful zone offense and destructive man defense to win games. Under the guidance of our incredible coach, Christie Kim, we are working hard at practice to clean up our zone defense and develop our deep game while continuing to challenge each other in preparation for the series—the culmination of our season—at the end of this month. India Stubbs and Pin-Wen Wang
This team has been so eager to learn and improve, making it easy for us as captains to direct that energy to push ourselves and grow as a team. We cannot wait to show all our hard work and watch our team shine at the upcoming sectional and regional tournaments. We are incredibly thankful for your continued support and enthusiasm and hope that you will be there to cheer us on, whether in person, or by following our Twitter feed @quasarultimate. Let’s bring it! India, Pin-Wen, and Annie

President’s Day Invitational February 15th -17th Score Reporter Day 1 9 – 11 loss v. Victoria 11 - 5 win v. Florida 8 - 11 loss v. Michigan 15 - 8 win v. Sonoma State Day 2 11 - 7 win v. San Diego State 15 – 8 win v. Arizona State 9 -15 loss v. Texas Day 3 12 – 5 win v. Southern California 14 – 13 win v. Michigan California was a welcome change from the sometimes—aka often—harsh Cambridge winters. Arriving in beautiful La Jolla by plane, the Quasars were ready to play at our first big away tournament of the spring season. We started Day One seeded fifth in our pool. In Quasar’s first game against University of Victoria, we lost 9-11 after hard cap and a hard fought battle against our Canadian visitors. Quasar had some big takeaways from that game, both strategic and mental. The game with Florida followed Victoria, and with it Quasar’s growing determination to play like a team, communicate on the field, and dictate on defense. We pulled through with an 11-5 win, upsetting the fourth seed in our pool. Next, we played University of Michigan, starring our very own EChang’s sister Meeri! Harvard saw many opportunities for victory; although we lost 8-11, Quasar knew exactly what we needed to fix to turn it around in future games. We ended the day on a great note with a 15-8 victory over Sonoma State, upsetting the third seed in our pool. With a 2-2 record for Day One, Quasar surprised many and positioned itself as a team to look out for. It goes without saying that we were delighted to enter the Day Two Championship Bracket at our

team’s first spring tournament. While we lost to Texas 9-15 in pre-Quarterfinals, Quasar was stubborn to defend our team and got back in the mental game, defeating South California 12-5. th
We then went into one last game to secure our 9 place position. The team? Michigan. The game was well-fought on both sides, but this was an especially proud moment for Quasar. Every single Quasar’s head was in the game, each player either doing her best on the field or being the best possible eighth woman on the sideline. The uncontrollables—notably, heat and fatigue—could not match Quasar’s resilience. Quasar’s mental strength and solidarity pushed us through for the win, 14-13. And then we hit the beach. th
Initially seeded 19 in a tournament of twenty teams, Quasar surged through the rankings to th
finish 9 , all the while enjoying beautiful La Jolla, California and playing with spirit and pizzazz. But this tournament showed us more than our present position. It proved that with our will, we could get even better. If every team has a breakthrough moment, Pres Day was Quasar’s. We are especially thankful to Jackie’s brother for providing a roof over our heads during the tournament, toDJackie for her amazing impromptu piano skills, E and to family members for coming outFto support the team!

March 8th-9th, 2014 in Newark, Delaware Day 1: Pool Play 15-2 win v. Hofstra 15-0 win v. Syracuse Day 2: Bracket Play 15-3 win v. University of Delaware-Wilmington 15-4 win v. Brown 15-6 win v. Cornell Score Reporter Three weeks after President’s Day Invite, Quasar attended Delaware Classic 2014 in Newark, Delaware. Under cloudless skies and temperate weather, Quasar played reliably strong horizontal and vertical stack offense and man defense. Handlers Shirlee Wohl, India Stubbs, and Eliza “Pepe” Pugh consistently fed it to a strong rotating line of cutters including Pin-Wen Wang, Eliza Chang, and Emily Houlihan. Quasar finished Saturday pool play games with 15-2 and 15-0 wins over Hofstra and Syracuse. On Sunday, Quasar was extremely excited to have Vivian Chan’s and Leore Lavin’s fathers enthusiastically cheer for Quasar on the sidelines and Becca Ramos’s friend Eileen Bates keep stats on the players. Quasar came out with a similar intensity as seen on Saturday, barely allowing opponents to score. With a 15-3 win over the tournament hosts, University of Delaware—Wilmington, in the quarterfinals, Quasar advanced to the semi-finals against Brown. After a 15-4 win, Quasar proceeded to the finals against the Cornell Roses. In the finals, Quasar was down 3-0 after the first three points, but came out of a time-out fired up and continued on to win 7 out of the next 8 points to take half. Fast legs, smart offense, and steady flow allowed Quasar to decisively win the championship game with a final score of 15-6. In addition to being D Quasar’s first tournament w in in the past two years, the weekend C was an excellent opportunity for the six rookie players present to get touches on the disc. Extra practice in tournament conditions is critical in achieving Quasar’s goal going forward to continue building depth on the roster and steadily improve as a team.

March 15-16, 2014 in Atlanta Georgia Pool Play: 13-1 win v. Notre Dame B 11-1 win v. Tulane 11-1 win v. Miami Ohio 11-5 win v. Alabama All second day games cancelled due to rain. Score Reporter | UltiPhotos
After a 1st place finish at the Delaware Classic the weekend before, Quasar came out swinging in Atlanta. Coming into the weekend, the team kept in mind all the goals from the previous tournament in terms of making each game more about our own standard of play rather than the competition. In addition to those broad team goals, prior to the tournament, each player met with her team buddy and wrote down concrete, individual goals so that buddies could keep each other accountable and check in during and after games. This mentality culminated in a sw eep of Saturday’s pool play. Throughout the games, individuals on Quasar turned it up and played shutdown defense to force turns. Ella Park-Chan’s quick closing speed on defense allowed her to get multiple run-through D’s, and there is some photo evidence to prove it. On offense, Kelly McGee and Leore Lavin stepped up in their role as cutters. Both rookies had critical points for Quasar in which they created separation from their defenders to advance the disc far downfield, eventually leading to scores in the end zone. In the absence of wind or any other inclement weather and supported by strong cutters, the handlers had opportunities to complete deep looks. Annie Yang fulfilled her individual goal of being more aggressive with deep looks on offense by finding cutters Eliza Chang, Arleen Aguasvivas, and Vivian Chan.

After the first three wins on Saturday, Quasar was still ready to go and itching for competition with the game against the tournament’s 4th seed, Alabama. After Quasar came out strong with 2 quick points, Alabama came right back to tie it 2-2. Quasar responded by cranking out a four-point run to take half and ended up winning our 4th game of the day, 11-5. To Quasar’s surprise and delight, Saturday’s wins were made all the more special by the fans that seemed to multiply on the sidelines as the day went on. Coming from the New York, Pittsburgh, Johnson City, Hilton Head, and the Atlanta area, all kinds of family and friends came to support Quasar and contribute to athlete nourishment with healthy and unhealthy snacks alike. It was even more special to all have a chance to get together at the Stubbs’ house, where India’s parents, Caroline and John, and her dogs, Ender and Bean, graciously hosted all of Quasar for the weekend. Unfortunately, all Sunday games were canceled because of torrential downpours starting Sunday morning. Overall, though we only had one day of play, it was a great opportunity to challenge ourselves as a team and work(item individually on specific aspects of our game. # XXXX) $000.00
