[vol. 1 Issue 1] December 2013

Q:

what is the quasar quarterly?

Dear Family, Friends, and Alumni, This is the first edition of the Quasar Quarterly, a newsletter created so that you can keep up with your q’s (and p’s). We’re busy. You’re busy. But we want a

quick way to share what Quasar

is up to--what we’ve done this season and where we’re going!

While the Quarterly does serve a

newsletter-like purpose, the December issue is special because it introduces

Rewards Program.

our Fundraising

We hope that you will consider donating to Quasar this season, and in return for your support we will shower you with customized love in the form of QUASAR SWAG. If you are family or a friend: You probably want to know what your dear quasarite is doing at Harvard, but you can’t figure out when to call her without catching her in class or at practice. And once you finally get to talk to her, all she does is ramble on about flicks, breaks, dumps, vert and ho, leaving you to question if she’s fulfilling her foreign language requirement with French or Frisbee. You hear about her teammates, but you only catch a one or two names between all of the unfamiliar Ultimate Frisbee terms. The Quasar Quarterly is the quick way to get to know the team that will define your

beloved Quasarite’s time at Harvard.

If you are an alum: You are probably experiencing withdrawal symptoms from leaving behind your Quasar family. We can only imagine the pain you’re feeling. We hope to mitigate your suffering by showing you that the

love within the Quasar family and the passion and dedication we share for the game of Ultimate is still going strong.

We’ve poured our hearts and souls into the season so far, and we’re excited to share pieces of

our journey with all of you!

We’ve had an exciting and busy fall. With a large graduating class last year, the returners knew that recruiting efforts had to be strong to start off the year. Returners garnered interest from friends and freshmen. Captains strategically planned warm-ups and drills for practices. But the work of the returners was only half of the battle. This year’s incoming rookies blew away the returners’ expectations.

The rookies brought a high level of talent, dedication, and enthusiasm to learn and grow. That, along with the captains’ inspiring leadership and careful organization on top of all of the returners’ commitment to work and improve, have been the driving forces

of Quasar’s fall season.

We competed at Clambake, Huck-a-Hunk, and a one day tournament at MIT. These early tournaments served as great learning experiences for the team. After each weekend, we’d return to practice with a better understanding of defensive positioning, more confidence in our offense, and more trust in ourselves and in our teammates. Most importantly, we’d return with a clear list of goals that needed to accomplish in practice that would make us a better, more competitive team. Our fall season also included a scrimmage against Tufts Ewo, where we ran away in the second half to a 15-8 victory. Though the start of Reading Period suggested that we lock up in our rooms to study for finals, we still found plenty of time for Quasar. Texts about team dinners, workouts, and study sessions fired incessantly over the GroupMe. And of course, we had our annual mid-season meeting. Twenty girls cozied up in the common room of Adams B-36 for nearly 4 hours to share our thoughts on the season so far and to map out our goals for the rest of the season. Coming together to solidify our team goals was the perfect way to spend our last few days of the fall semester. Though we are all at home, far away from each other enjoying time with our families for J-term, we left campus knowing that our goals have been set high and the work toward achieving those goals starts now. Though we’re signing out here, know that we are putting in the work this winter in preparation for the spring season. Wishing you Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

how can you show your love for quasar?

participate in the quasar rewards program! In the spirit of the season of giving, we hope that you will make a donation to Quasar. The cost of a season of Ultimate adds up quickly, and we want to ensure that there are no barriers to entry into the Quasar family. The money we raise from fundrasing will go toward team-wide expenses like tournament entry fees, rental cars, gas, and hotels. Your donation, no matter how big or small, will help lower the out-of-pocket costs for all Quasarites. To show our thanks to you, we are sending you Quasar Swag in return for your donation to the team. Check out the winter edition of the Quasar Rewards Program!
