WELCOME Welcome to the inaugural Pro Landscaper Sustainability & Biodiversity Awards. One of the most important roles that Pro Landscaper has is to use our voice and reach to help showcase the positive role that the landscaping sector can have on business and wider society. We believe that landscaping and green spaces are a big solution to managing climate change, so we are incredibly proud to have launched these awards this year so that we can shine a spotlight on the great initiatives within our sector. It was not a surprise to receive so many entries that demonstrated great examples of companies, projects and products showcasing environmental innovation. So, here they are – the companies that made the shortlist across our 12 categories in these inaugural awards. STOCKLEY PARK | NURTURE LANDSCAPES LTD Stockley Park was formally opened by HRH, the Prince of Wales on 6 June 1986, making it the oldest business park in the UK. The park was the brainchild of Sir Stuart Lipton who wanted to provide the local community with space for recreation as well as business prosperity. Before the development of Stockley Park, the area was used for gravel extraction which then became a landfill, and during the development of the park, approximately five million tonnes of waste was moved making this the largest civil engineering contract involving landfill transfer in Europe. Now, Stockley Park is maintained by Nurture Landscapes and together the two are committed to sustainability and encouraging wildlife in the park. It has been awarded the Biodiversity Benchmark Award, Green Apple Awards and Green Flag Award. The contract is delivered with the use of only battery powered hand tools, and Nurture Landscapes offers activities and events to involve site occupiers and spread biodiversity awareness.

EXCHANGE SQUARE | MAYLIM A major new public park for the City of London, Exchange Square has been re-imagined as a bucolic landscape with trees, generously planted borders and green space. Exchange Square is a unique place for people and nature in the heart of the city. As principal contractor for the project, Maylim led the scheme’s delivery and collaborated with British Land, Stace and Greengage Environmental to ensure that throughout construction, sustainability and innovation were carefully considered with excellent results. Exchange Square goes beyond ‘business as usual’ by embracing an approach that elevates the importance of landscape and external works within post-construction carbon assessments. This innovative perspective challenged industry norms and required Maylim to adapt and develop systems to support data collection and accurate reporting, and there was a 61% reduction in embodied carbon from the design stage. The project’s focus on urban greening, high-quality materials, seating, and lighting has also helped to break down barriers and attract a diverse range of people to utilise the space.

COUNTY DURHAM BIODIVERSITY POND AND REWILDING | WATER GEMS (ALBA) LTD A private client approached Water Gems – which specialises in unique, self-designed landscaping, water and biodiversity projects – to help them rewild an area of field in County Durham. So, Water Gems created a 20mx13m biodiversity pool with a large deck, beach area and all native planting. The pool has become a “biodiversity hotspot” with dragonflies, newts and swallows all using it. Water Gems also scraped off large areas of turf and used the material to create banks for planting hedgerows, whilst the scraped areas were seeded with local provenance wildflowers. Water Gems always aims for its projects to be as sustainable as possible, using locally sourced materials where possible and plants of local provenance that are sustainably harvested from local water bodies which trap carbon and pollutants. This project in County Durham aligns with its strategy of using pond plants, wildflower and hedgerows to absorb increasing amounts of carbon over time.

THE FAUNA & FLORA GARDEN, CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2023 | JILAYNE RICKARDS Multi-award-winning garden designer Jilayne Rickards puts sustainability and biodiversity at the heart of all her designs, and The Fauna & Flora Garden at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show was no exception. It was an exemplar of sustainable design, construction and legacy whilst promoting a positive global conservation message. Bold approaches, such as the garden being entirely free of cement and concrete, were used, demonstrating how a show garden can be both beautiful and intriguing, whilst keeping the carbon footprint as low as possible. Rickards worked closely with the contractor and other teams in order to achieve this, and a spreadsheet of its environmental impacts was kept crossed referenced with its carbon calculation to prevent the team from straying from its goals. The Fauna & Flora Garden has now been reconfigured and constructed in its permanent home at the Eden Project in Cornwall.

Judges looked at the sustainability outlook of the project, the biodiversity elements and the transformational change this project has led to within a business.

MEADOW VIEW WILDLIFE GARDEN, OXFORDSHIRE | HOLLANDGREEN LANDSCAPES The team at award-winning, multidisciplinary practice HollandGreen is passionate about creating wonderful gardens that perfectly frame clients’ homes whilst connecting people to nature and enhancing the local ecology and biodiversity of each site. The practice has a sustainability-led approach from the earliest stages of design and carries out a biodiversity enhancement strategy on every new project to ensure a net gain. Its target is for no waste to be taken away – a goal it achieved with the Meadow View Wildlife Garden in Oxfordshire. HollandGreen says all waste was recycled and reused, saving the client money as well as reducing the project’s carbon footprint. What was an overgrown outdoor area has now been transformed into a beautiful wildlife haven that enriches the local ecosystem, with an increase in bees, newts, small mammals, birds and insects. A path meanders through a meadow, a wildlife pond, then onto a woodland beyond.

Products that are recycled or recyclable, designed and produced for a long lifespan and that have had a minimal impact on the planet’s resources were ideal to enter.

TYLER GRANGE GROUP LIMITED From achieving certification as a B-Corporation to permanently implementing a four-day week, Tyler Grange sees sustainable and responsible practices as the lifeblood of the business. The environmental consultancy is an expert in arboriculture, ecology and landscape planning, working with the UK’s leading architects, housebuilders and developers to ensure that projects are delivered with optimal benefits to people and the environment. It was set up nearly 13 years ago by four colleagues who wanted to create a business with their own ethos and values. Since then, Tyler Grange achieved an impressive first B-Corp assessment of 91.3% at the end of 2022 and has seen a significant reduction in absenteeism (as well as a huge increase in the number of CVs it has received) since introducing its new four-day week. The firm says its commitment to its people and the planet are fundamental to all areas of its operation; it has even appointed an in-house psychologist to support employee mental health and wellbeing, and its staff are also given the opportunity to volunteer for charities that are close to their hearts.

WINNER MATTHEW WILSON GARDENS

Matthew Wilson Gardens is a multi-awardwinning landscape design practice based in Rutland, East Midlands, working across the UK on projects ranging from courtyard city gardens to the multi-hectare grounds of Harewood House in Yorkshire. It specialises in creating gardens ‘of the place’, that respect the local vernacular and surroundings and that are designed with the environment and biodiversity at the forefront. This thinking influences everything from minimising waste from site, to upcycling and repurposing materials, to minimising road haulage and plant selection. At Acomb High House, for instance, it was able to repurpose over 100m 2 of walling stone and 60 linear metres of barrel coping and utilise 200m 3 of spoil waste that might have otherwise gone to landfill. The studio continuously researches new materials to scope out those with a lower environmental footprint and asks contractors to fill out a waste management and reduction form. Matthew Wilson Gardens’ key mantra is around quality – “quality materials and installation will always last.”

Judges monitored supplier relationships, future plans, transformational change and knowledge sharing amongst other areas.

Grounds maintenance provider i dverde is committed to protecting the environment for future generations and recognises the importance of sustainability in its practices. It says it has a “cultural bias towards making communities stronger, improving outdoor spaces and supporting wildlife conservation.” To ensure an environmentally friendly approach, i dverde has adopted a sustainability approach to suit the needs of its business, customers and stakeholders. Its Sustainability Action Plans fall under each of the three categories of this approach: People, Planet and Performance. The company also has a long-standing partnership with the RSPB, which sees six RSPB employees embedded within i dverde teams across the country to support and advise on wildlifefriendly green space management and to help maintain, enhance and restore sites for nature conservation (SINC). As this is a business-related category, entrants were pitted against their peers, regardless of turnover and resources, to crown a winner. Judges focused on the sustainability outlook of the business, supplier relationships, goals and a willingness to share knowledge with peers for the good of the industry.

The privately owned SME builds long-term client partnerships with a commitment to providing and developing bespoke market-leading sustainable operational solutions. Q&S creates and maintains urban landscapes that connect communities and creates spaces that allow people to connect with nature across London and the South East; two client sites have already been awarded and have retained the Wildlife Trusts’ Biodiversity Benchmark Award. Its work is chemical free and provided using battery powered equipment. Q&S also proactively facilities its employees in obtaining enhanced horticultural training and also in supporting sustainable initiatives. It recognises the benefits these bring in creating motivated, productive and satisfied staff.

In this business-focused category, they looked for a company that is making institutional changes to the way it goes about its work. Criteria includes but isn’t limited to staff schemes, the importance of sustainable approaches, ensuring sustainability from suppliers and the aims of the company going forward.

WINNER NICHOLSONS

Landscape architecture is one of a range of offerings by Nicholsons, which provides end-to-end design, moving seamlessly through to contracting services to realise projects. It is driving sustainability in all aspects of the business, including design, with a series of goals for the year set out in its Connect 23 document. One of its ambitions is to see Nicholsons’ Green Design Audit utilised for RHS show gardens and to share this resource with the wider horticultural and landscaping industry so that the considerations within it can become a mainstream approach to sustainability. Nicholsons also supports developers to achieve biodiversity net gain status and has employees accredited as Building with Nature assessors. Outside of its projects, the company delivers tree planting and community led projects in the Maasai Mara and also supports its staff through a series of measures, such as a discretionary bonus scheme and access to a Smart Health app.
