This event set out to inspire gardeners with award winning designer gardens, between Friday July 29 and Sunday September 4. This year, 21 gardens were displayed, which includes the work of 12 landscapers who participated for the first time. Internationally recognised designers Ray Hudson and David Davidson once again designed this year’s Kirstenbosch South Africa Chelsea Exhibit which was re-created by them at Garden World. There was a great emphasis on water wise gardening this year, with display gardens from Rand Water, the Sanbi’s and Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden. triggers which make life even more frustrating. They are so small, yet seem to be the proverbial piece of straw that breaks the Camels back. Here are 3 of our office “bad buttons” and what we can do about flicking the switch…
Sometimes we pressure ourselves unnecessarily.
1. Want to 2. Have to
and one I added myself
3. Dreams with deadlines. This will help to prioritise and put things into perspective. We often stress ourselves out over something that should be on our want to list, because we placed it in our have to list. Similarly we neglect some of the things that move us forward and make us happy by not listing it in our dreams with deadlines list. Now this is what I referred to in the beginning, sometimes you should invest in your most valuable asset, you! When you find yourself less patient, when you see your behaviour is on the nervous side and you need a break, put it on your dreams with deadlines list.
E-mails…
We are used to spending almost half of our day on emails. The thing is, once someone on the other side notices you are online they go into “Chat mode”. We try and keep it short and to the point. An email schedule works for me; I dedicate about an hour in the morning, midday and half an hour before closing to e-mails. Surprisingly, people quickly noticed when they will have my attention, and the nuisance mailing stopped. People respect our email schedule, and thus far we have had no complaints.

I love their look of disbelief when I reply that the most powerful strategy has little to do with your branding, advertising, website, or social media. Before any of those things will really have any impact on your business, you’ve got to uncover and communicate the way in which your business is different from every other business that does what you do. You’ve got to find a way to stand out and stake your claim on a simple idea, or position, in the minds of your prospective clients. This claim must be powerful and intentional - even if you must alter some aspect of your business to achieve it. In the minds of most prospects, one landscaping service is essentially like the other - a commodity to be acquired by simply picking up the phone. It doesn’t really matter if it’s true or not, unless you are willing to do something about it. The problem with residing in the commodity business is that if your prospects can’t identify some specific way in which your business is
are all expectations. The difference needs to be in the way you do business, the way you package your solutions, the way you sell your services, the fact that you show people how to transform their lives - it’s in the experience you provide. Business is pretty simple... We get paid to move people from a “Before” state to a desired “After” state. In the “Before” state the customer is discontent in some way. They might be bored, frightened or unhappy for any number of reasons. In the “After” state — life is better. They are entertained, happy, or unafraid of what previously plagued them. People don’t buy products or services. They buy outcomes. They buy access to the “After” state. A great product or service will genuinely move a customer to a desired “After” state… and great marketing simply articulates the move from the “Before” state to the desired “After” state.

LEON KLUGE
Pro Landscaper Africa sits down with the boundary pushing, contemporary artist, Leon Kluge. Leon is a frequently published landscape architect within our editions and indeed internationally, so we thought it a great privilege to sit down with him for our 1 Year Anniversary big interview‌
When did you decide you wanted to become a Landscape Architect? From when I can remember creating gardens has been part of my life. I had the fortune of growing up in the botanical gardens in Nelspruit, spending most of my time surrounded by one of the best gardens in Africa. My father was the curator of the gardens and this meant we had outings on weekends to photograph orchids, walk in the forests and learn about plants, their natural habitats and how to use plants effectively in landscapes. When my friends played with their cars in the sand, I parked my cars to the side and designed a beautiful garden around my sand house. What did you study to prepare yourself for this profession? My studies started at the Tswane University of Technology in the landscape technology department. I then furthered my studies and did my practical at Givatt Brenner nurseries in Israel. I worked on the Bahai gardens in Haifa, northern Israel. It was the best decision I could have made as the Israelis are very advanced within the industry.

The brief
“The brief was to create a home with all the spectacle of an Atlantic Seaboard showpiece but also to respond to the practical needs and complexities of family life. The thinking was towards massive open-plan and double-volume spaces and tasked zoning,” says Stefan Antoni, director and Partner at SAOTA. The Site

the bay. The views towards the east are of Sea Point and Robben Island in the distance. The Approach
Working with a relatively tight site, required lateral thinking, thereby creating a dynamic play on levels. Built over four floors, the areas, although open-plan, have definitive identities. A simple redwood and grey-shale façade, that opens on to a sculptural courtyard and leads into an entrance gallery, serves as a taste of the impact ahead. Sculpture, dramatic volume, farreaching views and raw textures – rock, timber, concrete – are the cornerstones of the look of this house, designed to maximise the setting and develop a patina over time.

Although sea-oriented, with the pool terrace to the west, it also leads off to the courtyard garden on the east, access to both by the way of sliding glass doors, which open it up so completely that it’s little more than a roof. The way the living level is configured means that the children are visible at all times, whether they’re playing outside, watching TV or swimming in the pool; a brilliant combination of challenging architecture and family practicality. The pool terrace with two pavilions, offers a lounging area on one end, and a braai-and-dining area on the other. The interiors create an emotional and sensorial journey when moving through the house. Art plays a pivotal role here, with select pieces forming the initial impression – the first piece once inside the door a massive dugout canoe, the couple has always wanted a dedicated gallery, and aims to fill out the space over time with special pieces.
When the large sliders are opened the threshold between the indoor and outdoor living spaces becomes blurred as it opens to the courtyard boma, a simple, concrete and granite plinth nestled against a wall of Malmesbury shale.
By utilising a broad base of textures and finishes, the décor feels natural and subtly organic, comfort being of paramount importance at all times; the overall ambiance is one of calm and serenity. Colour is kept to a bare minimum; the interior works predominantly with a light and shade tonal range, allowing the exterior views, the mountain, the ocean and sky and also the artwork to bring in colour.
The mood and role of each zone shifts as one moves through the different spaces

The particular challenge with this design was the construction of the curved bespoke fabric panels to fit the dimensions perfectly in a very short time scale, this was achieved successfully and the system fitted like a glove! To be able to include living walls within an events environment is one of the many benefits of this Scotscape System, owed to the fabric which is lightweight, flexible, easy to install and supports fantastic plant growth in both exterior and interior applications. The flexible nature of the system means that it can be applied to curved surfaces with ease.

T
he plan for this outstanding project was to create a seaside garden retreat for a client who had recently purchased a cliff-top property near Hastings in an area of outstanding natural beauty – a landscape of geological, historical and special scientific interest. Initially, the brief was only to provide access via steps up the steep cliff from the beach to the house. When the client saw what had been achieved and what the team at Frogheath Landscapes could achieve, under challenging circumstances, he took the plunge and appointed the company to create his dream environment. This was to be the client’s first garden. As an extremely successful and busy man, he was keen to have a ready-made, instant garden that could be maintained by a hired gardener. A hot tub, lounging area, fire pit and a writing room were to be included along with subtle lighting and safe access. The client’s lifestyle also dictated that the garden should look as good at night as during the day. In essence, the client wanted to recreate the feel of ‘Malibu or Mustique’ in Hastings!
SUPREME WINNER
The existing garden The house had been secured to the cliff on steel stilts drilled into the bedrock and the existing garden was very steep. There were only a couple of areas of flat ground which were right on the cliff edge and constantly exposed to the elements. Access was difficult and only by poorly constructed steps up the cliff. The clay soil was covered with rubbish and sub soil left by the builders of the house. Several large pines needed to be pruned and the existing vegetation was wild and natural. The brief ● Improve or replace the ramshackle
sleepers and slabs forming the access from the beach up to the house ● Improve the view of the sea and the surrounding cliffs from the garden

Working predominantly within a 35mile radius of its Burwash Weald base it uses environmentally sensitive suppliers where possible. It employs a highly qualified team, under the direction of Steve Moody, and has proved that budget is no barrier to excellence, having recently been nominated for an award for a garden based on a £1,500 budget, alongside awards for gardens with budgets in excess of £100,000.

The design solution For logistical and practical reasons timber decking was used to create paths, steps and level areas. Cedar was chosen to blend with the existing cladding on the house and the cedar hot tub. Wide steps were designed to allow easy access down a very steep slope from the house to the main deck and beyond. At night, these were subtly and safely lit and appeared to ‘float’ through the mounds of new planting. A large deck provided a level entertaining space with a hot tub and fire pit. Storage boxes were built to house the gas bottles and provide cover for the sofa cushions. As much as possible of the wild, romantic charm of the site was retained whilst taming some of the existing plants to improve the view of the sea. The problems There were numerous challenges to be overcome mainly around the access and logistics of the garden. Vehicles had to be driven along the promenade onto a shingle beach. This involved contacting multiple landowners to get their permission. Tides and members of the public enjoying the beach also had to be considered. As materials couldn’t be stored on the beach
the exact materials needed had to be brought to site each day. There were huge difficulties getting these from the beach to the top of the cliff. A crane was used to transport decking timbers, 90 tonnes of soil, some of the plants, turf, sleepers and the hot tub (although the crane’s arrival was delayed due to the London Olympics and Paralympics). All other materials were carried up the steps by hand and 40 tonnes of concrete taken up in buckets. A generator was required as the distance from the house to the beach was too long to power the cement mixer and other tools. The weather also played a significant part. Over the course of the year every weather type was experienced – deep snow on the beach, raging storms, blistering heat (only after the turf had been laid) and driving rain. However, the main cause for concern was the very limited communication with the client, who was working away for nearly all of the build. Any questions were relayed via email. As a result the garden was virtually complete before the client had his first sight of it. Happily he loved it

NURTURE
AN INDIGENOUS AWAKENING THIS SPRING Francois Geldenhuys on the importance of indigenous s p e c i e s w i t h i n o u r i n d u s t r y.
Here is my list: Bulbinella, Erica, Selago, Barleria, Coleonema, Plectranthus, Protea, Leucospermum, Vygies, Felicia, Polygala and Agapanthus. This does not include many other species but rather mentions some of the more commercially available ones that can be readily available within your gardening environment. This distribution of flowers for every month will attract many visitors to your domestic/ commercial garden and will help to eradicate the idea that a Waterwise garden is only a succulent garden or the notion that an indigenous garden is somewhat dull. I find it to be quite the opposite. As a keen gardener and professional horticulturalist I know the importance of the cold and rainy weather but can’t help finding myself somewhat happy as the cold is passing and the mornings become longer and longer. The only problem now is that the irrigation needs to be switched on and water is becoming scarcer and more polluted at a frightening pace. This brings me to my topic of indigenous plants. In South Africa we have an enormous range of succulent plants in an array of unimaginable shapes and textures to the brightest of colours. They come in a vast range, from tiny plants to giants- not to mention the enormous amount of bulbous species, annuals, fynbos, climbers and many others. As leaders within our industry I urge you to strive to promote these plants and their uniqueness to the public and industry members alike. With careful selection and the right knowledge, we are able to create a year round garden with interesting features season after season. A short list of 12 plants is all one needs to ensure a garden that flowers all year round. 36 Pro Landscaper Africa / Anniversary Edition 2016
It is amazing to see the life of your garden reappearing when utilising indigenous plants, as it creates a food source for many birds and insects. I am a keen exotic plant collector and have thus realised the unique ability of our indigenous plants to jump start a whole new environment without being dull or monotonous. The choices and combinations are virtually limitless for us when using indigenous plants and this enables us to create real, functioning and environmentally friendly outdoor spaces while still being aesthetically pleasing. We should all look to appreciate our plants as there is an undoubtedly good reason they grow here amongst us in our beautiful country. Using them enables us to save countless litres of water, create a more sustainable gardening future for the following generations and establish a more ecologically friendly environment for other flora and fauna. In this manner we can save our biodiversity from destruction and ensure a sustainable and prospering horticultural industry.

Acokanthera oppositifolia The Acokanthera oppositifolia (Bushman’s poison) makes a great screen hedge or as an attractive tree. We grow it in shrub form with its offshoots making it ideal for hedge planting in the region of 2 to 4m. At first glance one might mistake it as a syzygium species with its large bundles of red fruit or a Photinia with its unique foliage that varies from light green to dark maroon red, this all on the same plant. It’s hardy, takes the wind, is easy to grow and offers a sweet white scented flower. The fleshy ripe coloured fruits are a great attraction to birds. www.plantculture.co.za
Plectranthus chimanimaniensis An evergreen shrub +/-1m. Green leaves support a mass of flower spikes that bloom in spring reaching their peak early winter. Prune after flowering. Happily tolerate extremes from cold and wet to hot and arid. Plant in sun or semi-shaded. They are shallow rooted and need adequate watering, once established withstand periods of drought. www.elands.co.za
Falkia Repens Indigenous endemic to Eastern and Western Cape. Creeping, mat forming perennial groundcover that performs well on its own or with a planting palette. Excellent between stepping stones and rocks, also cascades over walls and pots. Dark green ovate leaves, bearing light pink or white flowers from late spring to end of summer. Evergreen and hardy plant. Excellent in sun or shade, heat tolerant, drought tolerant but can take wet conditions and is fast growing. www.tshala.co.za
The Acacia galpinii Bougainvillea Bougainvillea can be trained into any shape desired– tree, shrub, hedge, on pergola, against trellises and even into Bonsai. A riot of vibrant flowering colours – whites, pinks, purples, oranges, yellows and scarlet, two-tone colours, double and single flowers - en masse throughout the year – beautiful Bougainvillea’s are drought hardy and salt tolerant, garden favourites. Once established, these thorny, vine-like South American shrubs, will flourish in those difficult hot dry sunny garden spots, favouring a deep root watering and good drainage. www.indulinursery.co.za www.prolandscaper.co.za
This indigenous tree can be found all over southern Africa. The Acacia galpinii (or Monkey Thorn) is a large deciduous tree with light green foliage, losing its leaves in winter. It produces light yellow flowers from September to October, and brown pods from February to March. The Monkey Thorn is able to reach heights of 25 – 30m. The Acacia galpinii can withstand very hot and dry conditions and is fast-growing, making it an ideal tree for shade, large gardens and avenues. www.justtrees.co.za
Aloe marlothii Nothing says “Mountain” better than the Mountain Aloe. This is a monster of a aloe. Its golden yellow flowers are unsurpassed by all. Structure, posture and focus are the main reason for choosing such a great plant. It is loved by all, birds, bees, insects and people. This plant is a definite must for the keen gardener. www.newhorizensnursery.co.za Pro Landscaper Africa / Anniversary Edition 2016

After numerous requests by prospective clients to provide a more flexible approach towards cosmetic and styling options, MultiOne finally decided to give it a go and enlisted a number of automotive aftermarket companies to assist in beautifying a construction machine that normally never warrants the attention nor effort from it owners. Given that the MultiOne brand has become synonymous with style and quality in the South African market, it was important for Multione to invest in this project. The modular design and universal platform of the new range of mini loaders make it very cost effective to pimp your MultiOne. Covers are firstly removed and the polyethylene substance ensures a perfect finish in any colour imaginable, even in a carbon fibre finish. This is either accomplished by wet dipping or colour impregnation via a secret aftermarket process. Cylinders are removed and resprayed to match the colour scheme. Excellent cutting results
Thanks to the free movement pattern of the Automower® the lawn is perfectly cut, achieving a beautiful, carpet-like finish. Razor-sharp blades made of strong carbon steel mounted on a robust cutting disc system, cut the grass gently from all directions, helping it to grow strong and healthy. Fine grass clippings are returned to the ground thus enriching the soil.

P R E S S U R E T R E AT E D T I M B E R Timber with a moisture content below 20% cannot rot. This may not always be possible when used outside in exposed conditions as it requires proper application and maintenance of a suitable penetrating and water repellent wood sealer. The options are to use either naturally durable but expensive exotic hardwoods, or less costly locally grown non-durable Pine or Eucalyptus (gum) timber or poles, that have been pressure treated with a suitable wood preservative to the desired exposure or hazard class.
The H class system is a guide to help you buy the correctly treated timber for your project. Be sure to look for the required H class on the timber as well as one of the two quality marks given below.
Sustainable Timber Resource Timber is the most sustainable building product available to man. It’s naturally renewable. Over 90% of plantations grown in South Africa are FSC® certified.
Hazard classes: H2— dry interior above ground H3— exterior above ground H4— in ground contact H5— in contact with fresh water and wet soil H6— in contact with marine waters
