Just a note
It’s hard to believe the Fall season is in full swing. Pumpkin, spices, warm sweaters and mittens, costumes, trees slowly shedding their Spring foliage, we are in for a splendid time with family and friends. Fall is always a busy time. The start of our kids heading back to school. Transitioning from our flip flops to warm leggings and boots. Wishing for rainy days, umbrellas and puddles to jump in. My favorite part of Fall is family. Preparing for Halloween and Thanksgiving holidays. Pinning like a mad woman new family favorite recipes. Yes, it has absolutely begun. Make sure to check out all the fun costume ideas, spooky recipes and frightening crafts! Glossy eyed and totally giddy while writing this note, I wish you and your family a wonderful, safe and fun Fall! Thank you so much for supporting the Ella and Annie adventure.

Haunted Halloween By Anders Ruff Custom Designs

e used a mix of antiques (books, cameras, medicine bottles, paper documents from the early 1900s, an old clock & typewriter, shutters and window panes) to give that haunted house feel. The backdrop was an olive green silk that had embroidered tree branch looking detail and it was the perfect fabric to give a haunted forest look. We tea-stained cheesecloth (DIY) to drape over the table for depth and interest. The old columns were the perfect side decor to anchor the table because they reminded us of the columns of an old haunted house. Bat sugar cookies (From Firefly Confections) were hung from the ceiling as if they were swooping through the air. We couldn’t do this shoot without a black cat! (Thanks to our local humane society!) The kids dressed up as the classic witch and mummy. (Amazing costumes from Made by Morgan!). Since we didn’t want to scare our little goblins away, festive treats such as hanging bat cookies, pumpkin & owl cookies, mummy-mallows (mummy-head marshmallows), boo-meringues (meringue ghosts), white chocolate drizzled caramel apples, chocolate skeleton keys were displayed. These treats gave a kid-friendly feel to the setup while still showing unique ideas for desserts. Our focal point of the main dessert table was an antique typewriter where we displayed pumpkin and owl cookies, plus witch’s spells from our printable collection. Printable pennants embellished with some graphic mock-Polaroids (also included in the printable collection!) looked amazing on the front of the dessert buffet! We used accents of old-school cameras to accessorize the table and flowed well when it was mixed in with the haunted house photography/banner (in the printable package). The chocolate skeleton keys were the perfect touch! I made these and LOVED the way they turned out! Old medicine bottles wrapped in our graphic designs were used to display the Mummy-mallows and Boo-meringues (which I made the night before!)

e made inverted book displays (DIY) out of old beat up books and used varying sizes to add height and dimension. A vintage ammo box was used to hold caramel apples and an antique door knob was set up to hold the chocolate skeleton keys (DIY – we will be showing how to make these on our new website soon www.andersruff.com). We made these chocolate skeleton keys from key molds and also our printable key template that is included in the printable collection. We also made the caramel apples (DIY) and drizzled white chocolate horizontally to carry through the same “look” as the wrapped mummy treats (and model!). A side bar was perfect to display our bat-juice (apple cider) and other small treats. We used hues of burnt orange, olive greens and natural creams & browns. Our printable graphics included modern polka-dots, skeleton stripes, vintage beadboard stripes, and classic tweed patterns. We used some Harry Potter inspirations for witch spells and potions. We also included real haunted house photography for our main banner. We used old shutters and a window pane for our backdrop – a simple prop that gives a bold statement. More antique books, cameras and medicine bottles were displayed to hold our treats. We added some Spanish moss for another spooky element. We created a square Trick or Treat banner to offset the scene. Popcorn cones (made out of our printable patterned papers and embellished with a printable party logo) were filled with fresh popcorn and strung along the table with mini-clothes pins, so the kids could easily take them off to eat. We piped chocolate cobwebs (DIY) to add to the tops of some of the popcorn cones as well.

his All Hallows Eve Tea Party was inspired by the vintage Victorian-era Halloween postcards that I grew up with. My family are antique experts and dealers and I was always intriqued by the fabulously adorable artwork depicted on them. And since it was very prevalent of the time, a tea party made a lot of sense for the setting. The decor had to be reflective of that era but yet I didnt want it to feel too dated so it was livened up the colors to include the sea blue, and make the oranges and creams pop a little bit.

here was a spirit of whimsy and carefree fun. The tea party guests came to the party dressed in their whitchy whimsical best complete with tutu gowns and fascinator hats. These were the most adorable sparkly witches I’ve ever seen! The dessert table was complete with traditional sweets found around halloween; red velvet cupcakes tea tabletops, selection of handpainted sugar cookies, chocolates, salted caramel cake pops, chocolate covered oreo cookies with beautiful hand crafted antigued frames and pocorn cones. A variety of candies were used as part of the decor to set off the beautiful desserts. The tea party table settings included the cutest kitty kat sugar cubes! Almost too adorable to drop into the tea.. and gorgeous cookies to match. Everything was tied beautifully together with the invitation and coordinating paperie.

We love the holiday season and the fact that Halloween is the beginning of all the festive fun! For this shoot, we wanted to create something that didn’t necessarily scream Halloween but had a subtle creepiness to it. We drew inspiration from the Victorian era and tapped into our inner haunted mansion. We had the pleasure of using some fabulous pieces from Found Vintage Rentals. The wrought iron gate reminded me of European architecture and the side table, chair, picture frame, urn, and typewriter provided the perfect props for our escort card table. It’s amazing what some vintage props can do. Gorgeous and timeless. After handcrafting our black lace backdrop and dessert stands, we decided on desserts for the more mature palette and made creme brulee in chocolate dishes, tiramisu, lavender ginger cookies, decorated lemon sugar cookies, monster-tini’s and an assortment of candy take away treats. The two-tiered cake was made by Rebecca Lehman of Heavenscent Cakes and became a focal point for the Sweet Station. We loved the intricate detailing and the perfect color match!
“We invite you in for this midnight affair and hope it leaves you with goosebumps. Beware, we caught a ghost in one of the photos. Can you spot him?” We designed and created all of the paper goods as part of the overall look of this station. Our custom dessert stations come with many of these unique items that we create specifically for your event. The favor boxes, mini treat cups, candy bar wrappers, and favor tags were a lot of fun to make. Fabulous scrapbook paper, brads, and decorative items help complete the look. We even adorned the center of our candy bar wrappers with a sticker from the Martha Stewart Halloween collection. The coffin candy cases are from her collection as well and can be found at Michael’s On the side table set up, we crafted decorative masks and mustaches for the guests to disguise their true goulish identities with. Butterfly and licorice pipe place cards helped them find their seats, and they could leave their wedding wishes for the bride and groom. The custom invitation was made with velvet, damask paper and is one of my favorite elements.

In his famous poem The Raven, Edgar Allen Poe described a conversation with a dark and mysterious bird “on a midnight dreary.” I wouldn’t talk to a bird that showed up like that in my house, I would just say EEK! Our EEK! Halloween party was geared toward a spooky but not scary good time for the little ones. In my mind Halloween is special because it allows us, for that one night, to have the courage to be whoever we wish to be, and to dream impossible dreams. As we looked into this year’s Halloween season, our dreams ran into the most wonderful things: cupcakes, creepy old books, and even a few ravens along the way. Let your imagination run wild as you join us for this EEK-tacular event. At GreatStitch we love dreaming up these “spooky” parties. Some of our favorite things from Halloween crept out with all this fun: spiders, and monsters and cupcakes “Oh My!” These cupcakes are a new recipe that we tried that tasted delectable, we replaced the liquid in the buttercream recipe with apple juice! What could be more Halloween than a Caramel Apple Cupcake?! The younger kids got a kick out of our “dirt pie.” This has been a kooky delight in our house for years, it’s always fun to bring out the familiar with the unexpected. The “ghostly” marshmallows were a huge hit and this is something anyone can do with an edible marker or chocolate chips to bring their party up to a hair-raising level. The chocolate rocks are here.

There are so many fabulous vessels and utensils that can be found in your own kitchen! With a little bit of creativity, you can turn almost any item into a cake stand or dessert tray. I utilized baking pans, bundt pans, cupcake trays, pie tins and jars as cake stands, cookies trays and more! Everything is reusable and adds a lot of depth and height. I didn’t have to purchase a single item and I feel it gave the whole table a very warm, homemade feel. A friend of mine has a gorgeous vegetable garden and a lot of the vegetables were incorporated into the decor. I found some coordinating scrapbook paper and made paper medallions and garland in order to add a bit more detail. The PolkaDot Pickle sewed a gorgeous fabric bunting banner and used her Cricut to make the leaf garland. With natural setting such as your backyard, the amount of decor needed is minimal and the garland and bunting were perfect! For the desserts, I focused on mini tarts and an assortment of cookies and chex mix. By purchasing pre-made tart shells, you can make your own filling and turn any mini tart into an inexpensive, easy dessert option while still giving the guests several flavor options to choose from. The egg cartons were the perfect size for guests to fill with mini tarts and take them home. If you don’t have time to bake several different cookie recipes, head to your local grocery store for an assortment of cookies! You’d be surprised at all the options you can find during the holiday season.

ith fall in the air, and leaves starting to drift from the trees; Ella and her friends gathered for games, treats and a few tricks on the farm. Colorful costumes, the sounds of laughter and delicious scents of sweet treats delighted all. Games included the traditional bobbing for apples, and a vintage spin on musical chairs. Everyone enjoyed yummy goodies from Sweet Treats Design Studio; delicious tie-dyed meringues and cereal treats in the shapes of black cats and witch hats. A Halloween party wouldn’t be complete without costumes, and our talented vendors made a few just for us! Paper plate crafts are always a hit in my house. They are versatile, easy to work with and I always have the supplies on hand. “Witch� is why we enjoyed this paper plate mask craft kit by Oriental Trading company.
All the supplies were provided. From the precut and colored paper plates and elastic string to the foam embellishment pieces. There were three styles of masks and enough supplies to make four of each mask.

~ First I had the kids remove the foam pieces for the masks. ~ Then they layed out each piece the way they wanted it on the paper plate mask. ~ Lastly they curled the pipe cleaners around their fingers or bent them in a zizag pattern.
2 4 ~ The only thing not included was adhesive. I chose to use hot glue because it is more permanent, but craft glue or glue dots would work as well for smaller children or if you are doing this craft with a lot of kids.

~ Since we were using a hot glue gun I only let my older daughter who’s 10 attach some of the larger pieces herself. For my younger children I did all the gluing.

~ Easy Peezy Lemon Squeezy and super cute. You don’t have to be super crafty or spend a lot of time to create these adorable masks with your kids.
~ You aren’t limited to the original three masks either. If you use your imagination you can come up with even more possibilities. My girls created a Grumpy Cat mask (who they adore), by turning the cat mask and the ears around and coloring a brown nose. Who doesn’t love Grumpy Cat.

Ruffled Halloween
Wreath
by Blissful & Domestic Hi there! I am Danielle, from Blissful and Domestic. I am sharing a simple tutorial on how to make a Ruffled Halloween Wreath. Supplies: - 1 yard of Costume Clubhouse for Riley Blake from The Ribbon Retreat. - 1 wire wreath form - 1 glitter spider, polka-dot scrapbook paper - wooden letters - a scrap of burlap.

Most of these items I found in my craft stash. -I took my one yard of fabric and folded it in half. Then I folded it in half again, lengthwise (see picture above). -Once I had my fabric folded, I cut down my fabric vertically. This created 3 different piles of fabric strips. -My strip piles on the ends had folds in them. I cut down the folds, so all of my strips were separated. Don’t worry if your cuts are not straight. You won’t be able to tell once the wreath is finished.
Take 3 strips and wrap them around your wreath form
-Once your wreath is covered, you can start working on your ruffles. You can use a ruffle foot or a basic running stitch. I used a running stitch. I just put my sewing machine on its widest basic stitch. Remember not to back stitch, when doing a running stitch. I used the rest of my strips for my ruffle. When I was coming to the end of a strip, I would overlap my next one (see picture above). This creates one continuous strip of fabric. -Once you have finished your running stitch, pull your thread to create a ruffle. Now you can begin to wrap your wreath. Either glue your ruffle in place or use pins.

-Then I created my burlap ruffle by doing a basic stitch. I folded over my burlap as I went. This is the easiest way to get a ruffled burlap appearance. You could also swap out the burlap for any other festive Riley Blake Fabric. There are many to choose from. -Next I added my wooden letters and spiders. I traced my letters and cut them out. I used Elmer’s Glue to attach my scrapbook paper to my letters. Next, I used hot glued to attach my letters and spider. Cut off any extra thread from your ruffle and then you’re done.

Step One Download the bat template here, then print out onto card stock. I traced the template on the stiffy felt using a white crayon and cut them out.
Step Two! To string the garland, you will need to make a small cut near the top of the wings. Thread your needle with the length of string and go through the front and back around from the bat. That is it. So easy! Now hang up that garland and enjoy it!

Spooky Halloween Dip Six Sister’s Stuff 16 ounces refried beans 1 1/4 ounces taco seasoning mix (1 packet) 1 cup sour cream (divided) 1 cup salsa 1 cup shredded cheese (I used Colby Jack) 2 tomatoes diced (I used Roma tomatoes) 1/4 cup diced green onions 3 ounces of sliced olives (drained) 1 cup guacamole 11 ounce bag of tortilla chips
Directions: In a small bowl mix the taco seasoning with the refried beans. Spread the bean mixture evenly on an 11 inch plate getting close to the edge. Then carefully spread 3/4 cup of the sour cream over the bean mixture. Then add the salsa very gently over the sour cream. If your salsa is really runny, drain off some of the liquid first. Then apply the guacamole mixture over the salsa. I put dollops of guacamole all over and then carefully spread them together so that the salsa doesn’t come through. Around the edge spread the grated cheese. top the cheese with sliced olives, diced tomatoes, and sliced green onions. With the remaining 1/4 cup of sour cream, put it into a sandwich bag and clip off the corner. Squeeze the sour cream into a web pattern over the guacamole. Top with plastic spiders.

2 T Olive Oil 3/4 Cup Yellow Onion, Grated 2 Garlic Cloves, Grated 1 Qt Chicken Stock 1 Cup Ground Cornmeal 3 T Butter, Unsalted 2 t Kosher Salt 1/4t Freshly Ground Black Pepper 1 Cup Parmesan, freshly grated
1/2 cup Marinara Sauce 3 Corn Cobs, Leaves removed, Silk reserved. Cut or torn into 1/2 “ strands 20 Polenta “Eye” Balls 4 Whole Eggs, whisked and placed in large bowl 1 qt Canola Oil, for frying
Directions:
Directions - Heat Canola oil in medium saucepot to approximately 325 degrees
- In a medium saucepot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add onion and garlic to pan and cook until translucent. - Add chicken stock and heat until simmering - Gradually add cornmeal while whisking to prevent clumping - Stir until cornmeal is soft and the liquid has been mostly absorbed
- Set up dipping station with the egg mixture first, then the corn silks in separate bowls - One at a time, cover the polenta balls in egg, then coat in corn silk - Gently lower polenta eyeballs into the oil and fry until the corn silk is golden brown
- Stir in Parmesan and butter. Season to taste
- Gently place polenta eyeballs on paper towels for draining
- Pour polenta into non-stick sprayed deep pans – two loaf pans, if possible. A small casserole dish works as well
- Sprinkle with kosher salt
- Once polenta is firm and cool, use a large melon baller to scoop out the “eyeballs”
- Garnish with marinara sauce on top of the round for blood shot eyeball effect
- To get round balls, try to get the melon baller edges flush with the polenta surface then scoop. This will create a flat bottom and a round top.

Ingredients: 40 Famous Chocolate Wafers – sold in most supermarkets 1 can, White Frosting 20, Hershey’s Kisses Candies 1, Bottle Orange Food Coloring 1, Small Ziploc Bag
Ingredients: 1 1/2 Cups, All-Purpose Flour 3/4 oz., Unsweetened Cocoa Powder 1 Cup + 2T, Sugar 1/2 t, Salt 1/4 t, Baking Soda 1 3/4 Sticks, Unsalted Butter, slightly softened 3 T, Whole Milk 1 t, Vanilla Extract 1/4 t, Cinnamon 1/4 t, Nutmeg 1/4 t, Allspice T = Tablespoon t= teaspoon
Directions: 1. Add several drops of orange food coloring to frosting can and stir until completely blended. Adjust coloring as needed for a bright orange hue. 2. Place roughly half of the frosting in a small Ziploc bag, pushing the frosting to one lower corner. Cut a small hole in that corner to create your own piping bag. 3. Arrange 20 wafers on a lined sheet tray for easy handling and moving. 4. Pipe orange frosting into the center of a wafer, place another on top and gently push them together until the frosting almost comes out the side. 5. Pipe a small amount of frosting on the bottom of a Hershey’s kiss and place in the center of the sandwich. Press the candy until the frosting appears, making a small ring of orange around the kiss. 6. Pipe frosting around the edges of the wafer, making a brim for the witches hat. 7. Place cookies in the fridge to firm up frosting for less messy gobbling.

Directions: 1. Combine the Flour, Cocoa, Sugar, Salt and Baking Soda in the food processor and pulse several times to mix thoroughly. 2. Cut Butter into small chunks and add to the flour mix. Pulse several times. 3. Combine the Milk and Vanilla in a small cup. With the processor running, add the milk mixture and continue to process until the mixture clumps around the blade or the sides of the bowl. 4. Form the dough into a log about 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Wrap the log in parchment paper and refrigerate until firm. Minimum one hour or until needed. 5. Position the oven racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven, then preheat to 350°F. 6. Line the baking sheets with parchment paper and non-stick spray. Cut the log of dough into slices a scant 1/4-inch thick and place one inch apart on the pans to account for spread. 7. Bake, rotating the baking sheet from top to bottom and back to front about halfway through baking, for a total of 12 to 15 minutes. The cookies will puff up and deflate; they are done about 1 1/2 minutes after they deflate. 8. Cool the cookies on the baking sheets on racks, or slide the parchment onto racks to cool completely. These cookies may be stored in an airtight container for up to two weeks or be frozen for up to two months.
Frosting Ingredients: 11/2 Cups, Powdered Sugar, sifted 1/2 Cup, Unsalted Butter, room temperature 1 t, Vanilla Extract 1 T, Heavy Whipping Cream 1 t, Orange Food Coloring Directions: 1. Fit a mixer with the whisk attachment. On a low speed, whip the sugar and butter. Once the ingredients are blended (and less likely to create a dust storm), increase the speed and whip for one minute. 2. Add the vanilla, cream and enough food coloring to make the frosting bright orange. 3. Refrigerate until ready to use for up to two weeks. Note: If frosting is too thick, add more cream. If frosting is too thin, add more sugar. If frosting is lumpy, fit mixer with paddle attachment to break up lumps. Assembly: 1. Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting by Shauna Krantz Cupcakes 1 cup flour 2 teaspoons pumpkin spice 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon baking powder Pinch of kosher salt 1/2 cup butter, unsalted 1/2 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or vanilla powder 1/2 cup pumpkin
Frosting 8 oz cream cheese 2 teaspoons vanilla or 2 tablespoons pure honey 3-4 cups powdered sugar, sifted 2 tablespoons soft salted butter
Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Makes one dozen cupcakes. In small bowl combine flour, pumpkin spice, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Mix to combine. In separate bowl combine sugar and butter. Mix until you get a creamy texture. Add pumpkin and vanilla extract. Mix to combine. Add eggs one at a time, mixing thoroughly. Make a well in the flour bowl and add the wet ingredients. Mix until batter forms. Line 12 cup muffin pan and evenly distribute batter. Bake for 16-18 minutes. Cool. For the frosting, cream together butter, cream cheese and vanilla or honey. Add one cup of powdered sugar mixing with each addition. Add more sugar to make icing thicker. Add a tablespoon of milk to make frosting thinner. Top with sprinkles or toasted nuts!

Candy coated party popcorn (mixed with favorite Halloween candies) by a Spicy Perspective
ingredients: 12 oz. purple candy melts 14 cups popped popcorn (from 1/2 cup kernels) 11 oz. candy pumpkins 1 cup green chocolate coated candies 1 cup candy corns 3 Tb. Halloween sprinkles Salt
directions: Place the candy melts in a microwave safe bowl. Cook for 30 seconds. Stir and repeat, until smooth. Place the popcorn on a large rimmed baking sheet. Thoroughly salt the popcorn. Then pour the melted candy over the top and stir to coat. Once coated, apply the sprinkles. Allow the popcorn to dry. Then break apart and toss in the candy. Store in an air tight container until ready to serve.

Let’s catch up with Jillian Tohbar Leslie
Tell us a little bit about yourself. I was born in NJ, moved out to California for college, and never moved back! Right now we're living in Palo Alto, California. (The "we" is my husband, my seven-year-old daughter, Lainey, and me). The weather is beautiful here, and every so often we get to see a Google Self-Driving Car head down the street. It's pretty cool.
What inspired you to start Catch My Party? How did the name come about? We came up with the idea for Catch My Party in 2006. I started it with my husband, David, as a side project because we wanted to find something we could do together. I was a screenwriter at the time, working on a movie for Salma Hayek (yes, she's as beautiful in real life as she is on screen). He was working at MySpace in LA. As Catch My Party started to grow, and after our daughter was born, we realized this could be our business, so we both left our jobs to work on it full time and it's been the best decision we've ever made. The name Catch My Party came from my good friend, Lee. He has this unusual talent for coming up with interesting name, like the name of my daughter, Adelaine.
What do you love most about what you do? There are so many things I love about what I do. I get to work with my husband, who is the best partner I could ever ask for. I get to show off the work and creativity of women from all around the world. I get to inspire people with new party ideas and trends. I hopefully, get to make people's lives a little easier, by taking the chore out of party planning. I get to be my own boss. But probably the thing I love most about my job is that I get to share in the celebrations of people everywhere. What could be more uplifting or universal?
Who inspires you? My mom inspires me because she is the wisest person I know. My family inspires me because they give me so much love, joy, and laughter. Our users inspire me with all their creativity and kindness. And I actually find inspiration in some of the weirdest places -- the farmer's market, the gym, the dry cleaner... I just have to be open to it.

What are your favorite party themes? I love anything shabby chic. I think it's because it brings a lot of warmth to a party, plus it's easy to personalize with anything you have lying around your house. Just add soft colors and a few ribbons and you're there!
Do you have any tips or tricks for planning/hosting a party? Relax, relax, relax... I actually have to remind myself of this every time I entertain. There's a lot of pressure being the "person with the party website." I have to always remind myself why I'm throwing the party, which is to celebrate with the people I love, not to get praise and admiration (although, to be honest, I do like that stuff). At their core, parties are about sharing in an experience together and making lasting memories. So what if things don't go as smoothly as I want? So what if the cake ends up on the floor (which happened once)? It's about the people and the laughter and the love. Otherwise, it's just too much stress. Also, I recommend decorating your party with free printables. It takes your party to a whole new level, and is so cheap and easy to do! Plus, we have a ton our our site!
What are your favorite party food? For a big party, my favorite party food is anything made small, whether they be meatballs, bruschetta, salad in little cups, or chicken wings... It just makes the party much easier for your guests and that way you don't have to plan out an entire meal. For small dinner parties, I love comfort foods... roast chicken, mashed potatoes, and of course, pies with ice cream.
What are the popular party trends right now? Frozen is a juggernaut in the kids party world for girls. I just looked, and today, we got 6 Frozen parties added to our site. Also, circus/carnival parties are huge. Alice in Wonderland parties is another big trend. And definitely superhero parties (for both girls and boys). Who doesn't dream of being a superhero!
What are your future plans? We are launching our new site redesign any minute, that is a more modern, streamlined approach to what we already have. It looks great on desktop and mobile and really puts our users' photos front and center. We've been working on it for a while, so it's exciting to be ready to launch. We also have some other cool things in the works that I believe will make our site much easier to use. Most unusual party theme you have seen? I just saw a great Game of Thrones party added to our site, and our users recently uploaded a few fantastic Dr. Who parties. It's those parties that reflect what's going on in our mainstream culture that I think are so interesting and creative.

2. What is your mission?

Operation Shower is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and our mission is to provide joyful — AWESOME — baby showers for military families to ease the stress of deployment.
3. What services does OS provide? For military families who are expecting a new baby and are experiencing or have recently experienced deployment, we accomplish our mission through: * hosting amazing baby showers; * delivering high-quality products;

* creating a shared experience; * bringing recognition to military families; and working with individuals and companies to provide them an opportunity to show their appreciation and love for military families.
4. How are the locations and families chosen for your shower events? In order to produce the types of baby showers that we do, showers are typically planned ahead months in advance. As such, we have many requests for showers on our waiting list. As we look to where we will host a shower, we look at a combination of factors from where we have groups requesting a shower to where we can identify sponsors that enable us to host showers. Additionally, we work with several PGA TOUR events that host showers at their tournaments annually.
5. Are there any special requirements to host, attend or volunteer? We have different sponsor levels to host a shower, in that sense. For more information on that, please contact leann@operationshower.org to attend as a mom or guest.
6. How are themes chosen? We try to do new themes for each shower, or at least the majority. This was a lot more feasible when we were doing four showers a year. Thirteen showers a year all over the country means we are starting to repeat some popular themes or slightly reinvent some! We usually start with an idea of one and then work with our amazing volunteer graphic designers to play with the direction. Once some graphics are done we move to centerpieces and all of the event decor. The creative part and process of it all is just one aspect of an OS event but one of the most fun!
7. Name some memorable moments? There really are too many list! One very special moment was a woman who was pregnant with twins. Her husband was deployed and her mom was also active duty and about to be stationed in Germany. She was telling her story at the table with a few other moms and one of them came up to me later and said, “Don’t worry. We’ll take care of her now.” Just to know that moms connect and leave with not only gifts but internal support systems from attending the shower is very, very special
8. What is the largest shower you hosted? The largest shower we have hosted was in March of 2014 for 120 moms. The shower was held at Universal Studios Globe Theater, sponsored by Babies ”R” Us and hosted by Heidi Klum.

This makes a huge difference as we shower hundreds of moms a year and always need wonderful products! There are forms on our website for volunteers where you can list what interests you. Halloween is an exciting time of year for kids, and to help ensure they have a safe holiday, here are some tips from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Feel free to excerpt these tips or use them in their entirety for any print or broadcast story, with acknowledgment of source. ALL DRESSED UP: - Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame. - Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility. -Because masks can limit or block eyesight, consider non-toxic makeup and decorative hats as safer alternatives. Hats should fit properly to prevent them from sliding over eyes. - When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories look for and purchase those with a label clearly indicating they are flame resistant. - If a sword, cane, or stick is a part of your child’s costume, make sure it is not sharp or too long. A child may be easily hurt by these accessories if he stumbles or trips. - Obtain flashlights with fresh batteries for all children and their escorts. - Do not use decorative contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from an eye care professional. While the packaging on decorative lenses will often make claims such as “one size fits all,” or “no need to see an eye specialist,” obtaining decorative contact lenses without a prescription is both dangerous and illegal. This can cause pain, inflammation, and serious eye disorders and infections, which may lead to permanent vision loss. - Teach children how to call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they have an emergency or become lost. CARVING A NICHE: - Small children should never carve pumpkins. Children can draw a face with markers. Then parents can do the cutting. - Consider using a flashlight or glow stick instead of a candle to light your pumpkin. If you do use a candle, a votive candle is safest. - Candlelit pumpkins should be placed on a sturdy table, away from curtains and other flammable objects, and should never be left unattended. HOME SAFE HOME: - To keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, parents should remove from the porch and front yard anything a child could trip over such as garden hoses, toys, bikes and lawn decorations. - Parents should check outdoor lights and replace burned-out bulbs. - Wet leaves or snow should be swept from sidewalks and steps. - Restrain pets so they do not inadvertently jump on or bite a trick-or-treater.

ON THE TRICK-OR-TREAT TRAIL: - A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on their neighborhood rounds. - If your older children are going alone, plan and review the route that is acceptable to you. Agree on a specific time when they should return home. - Only go to homes with a porch light on and never enter a home or car for a treat. - Because pedestrian injuries are the most common injuries to children on Halloween, remind Trick-orTreaters. - Stay in a group and communicate where they will be going. - Remember reflective tape for costumes and trick-ortreat bags. - Carry a cellphone for quick communication. - Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk. - If no sidewalk is available, walk at the far edge of the roadway facing traffic. - Never cut across yards or use alleys. - Only cross the street as a group in established crosswalks (as recognized by local custom). Never cross between parked cars or out driveways. -
Don’t assume the right of way. Motorists may have trouble seeing Trick-or-Treaters. Just because one car stops, doesn’t mean others will! - Law enforcement authorities should be notified immediately of any suspicious or unlawful activity. HEALTHY HALLOWEEN: - A good meal prior to parties and trick-or-treating will discourage youngsters from filling up on Halloween treats. - Consider purchasing non-food treats for those who visit your home, such as coloring books or pens and pencils. - Wait until children are home to sort and check treats. Orange pumpkins, fun costumes and candy corn will soon be taking over as Halloween draws to a near. The tradition of trick or treating is an activity that many kids look forward to on this night. After all, dressing up and visiting neighbors door to door to collect treats can be an exciting adventure. Trick or treating, however, is not for everyone. It is an adventure that may be a bit too exciting and extraneous for children who are too young. Fortunately, there are other activities young children and their parents can enjoy during Halloween without the hassle and uncertainty of traditional trick or treating.
Young Kids Can Celebrate with a Halloween Party at Home
You can celebrate at home with your own Halloween party for those little ones who may not be able to go trick or treating outdoors. It does not even have to be on Halloween or at night since young children usually go to bed early. Choose a day close to Halloween that is convenient and throw a small party even if it is just with your immediate family. Party Ideas: - Decorate the house with a Halloween theme or to match the child’s Halloween costume. - Make Halloween-themed kid-friendly food that your child will eat. - Set up separate candy bowls on the counter, table or even different areas of the house so the kids can still “trick or treat.” - Create a different Halloween theme for each room with treats inside for at-home door to door trick or treating. - Play Halloween music. You can play musical chairs using this, too, if children are old enough to participate. - Watch kid-friendly Halloween movies. - Play easy Halloween games, such as “pin the tail.” Some ideas for that are: pin the tail on the monster, pin the hat on the witch or pin the eyes on the ghost. - Have a Halloween piñata. - Have a photo booth area with Halloween props like a witch hat, pumpkins, spider webs and maybe a large cauldron for small children to sit inside. - You can also invite other children in the same age group or just have family or grandparents come over to celebrate. Trunk or Treat for Young Children A fun and safe way to trick or treat especially for young children is to instead arrange a “trunk or treat.” Ask friends and family to come over with their car trunks decorated with a Halloween theme or find a parking lot you can use. They can sit outside of their cars passing out treats while the kids walk to each car to collect candy. This works best when there is still light outside so children can see

the trunk decorations. Trunk or treat can be the perfect way for family and friends to be an active part of a child’s Halloween experience and is more convenient for young children to have everyone important there in just one place. Church Halloween Parties Many churches host Halloween parties that are kid-friendly for all age groups. They are usually free and open to the public. They have various activities that even young children can participate in such as a costume contest, face painting, trunk or treat, food and games. These are safer and scary themes are often prohibited so you do not have to worry about young children getting too scared. Trick or Treat at the Mall Local malls also offer safe and easy trick or treating by walking from store to store which is ideal for young children. It usually lasts for a certain period of time on Halloween night during mall hours. Children can wear their costumes (as long as there are no masks covering their face) and bring their Halloween bags to collect treats. This works great for small children since it is indoors and temperaturecontrolled, a better choice for young children who may get too hot or too cold walking around outdoors. DIY Halloween Activities for Young Children The thrill of Halloween for young children who cannot or do not want to trick or treat is to mainly dress up in a costume and do activities that help them embrace the excitement of Halloween. You can go to the craft store or use household material at home for easy DIY arts and crafts with young children. - Make masks using rubber bands or craft sticks with a paper mask printable. Make princess hats or witch hats using paper birthday hats. - You can help small children cover it in construction paper or paint, then decorate it. - You can use newspaper to make hats, too. Finger paint with Halloween colors. - Color or paint Halloween coloring pages. - Make a puppet monster using a brown paper bag, buttons, craft eyes, construction paper for ears and teeth. - Decorate a pumpkin. - Make spiders and other bugs using empty egg cartons, paint and pipe cleaners. - Children also love to help in the kitchen. Let them help mix a batch of pumpkin cake, frost a cupcake or decorate a spooky Halloween cookie. Watch Halloween Movies and Read Halloween Stories Show children the fun of Halloween simply by watching kid-friendly Halloween movies and reading Halloween books together. Halloween for young children and their parents is typically not about treats but seeing the small children dress up in a cute costume while having fun in a safe way.
