PB

WELCOME Science in the City is a 10-day festival running from 6 – 15 July, part of the Dublin City of Science 2012 celebrations. The Science in the City Festival celebrates “where creativity and great science meet”. Dublin was designated a City of Science by the Lord Mayor of Dublin at the beginning of the year. This designation is to celebrate Dublin hosting Europe’s largest science event, the Euroscience Open Forum which is coming to Dublin this July. This global gathering will consist of Nobel Laureates, leading researchers, policy makers, business leaders and international media. Science in the City Festival has over 60 events that will bring together a community of cultural institutions, organisations and individuals who are passionate about showcasing science. The new and innovative programme of science themed events across Dublin consists of photographic and art exhibitions, several theatre pieces, film festivals, tours, trails and treasure hunts, science buskers, large-scale interactive installations, experiments, public talks, debates and workshops. Dublin City of Science 2012 has over 200 events across 2012 and has created the potential to positively influence our lives, our environment and our world through building a community of national and international partners. Please visit www.dublinscience2012.ie for any info on tickets for Science in City events and updates on other events throughout the year. You can also visit more sites of science interest across the country after the festival by going to www.atlas.ingeniousireland.ie. We would like to thank all our supporters for making this happen and we hope that Dublin City of Science 2012 and Science in the City Festival will make everyone curious about the world around them and help people see science as part of their everyday lives.

As part of Science in the City, people will be given the opportunity to be part of what will be one of the greatest science events of the 21st century. Dr. Craig Venter, one of the leaders of the Human Genome Project in the 1990s and a pioneer of synthetic biology will deliver a lecture entitled, “What is Life? A 21st Century Perspective?” on @dubscience2 the evening of Thursday, 12 July in Trinity College Dublin, recreating the Irish event that inspired the discovery of the structure of DNA. In February 1943, one of the most distinguished scientists of the 20th Century, Erwin Schrödinger, delivered a seminal lecture, entitled “What is Life?”, under the auspices of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, in Trinity College, Dublin. The lecture presented far-sighted ideas on how hereditary information could be encoded in a chemical structure (aperiodic crystal) in living cells. Schrödinger’s book (1944) of the same title is considered to be a scientific classic. The book was cited by Crick and Watson as one of the inspirations which ultimately led them to unravel the structure of DNA in 1953, a breakthrough which won them the Nobel Prize.

The world in which we live faces the most serious challenges in almost every realm: social, economic, political, environmental... Many of the horrendous problems that humanity has created for itself, and the planet we inhabit, have their roots in bad practice and bad ideas, based on bad thinking. That is not to say *evil* thinking, but rather thinking that is unscientific, illogical, and prone to fallacies of all sorts. Dara Ó Briain and a panel of thinkers from across society: politicians, architects, theologians, engineers, artists, medical practitioners, economists take a humorous journey through logic, reason and scientific thinking to see how their use solved problems in the past. Scientific thinking is not just for scientists, you know.

Visual arts is taking over Project Arts Centre this summer to present three unique exhibitions and our most ambitious project to date. Conjuring for Beginners will transform the building; the Space Upstairs will become a giant gallery filled with sculpture on an enormous scale, by one of Ireland’s most promising young artists Sam Keogh; the Cube will be home to a trio of artworks, light, sound and video installations by Janice Kerbel (CA/ UK), Zbynek Baladrán (CZ) and the 2010 Turner Prize winning artist Susan Philipsz (UK); and in the gallery the final piece of the exhibition will be a collection of playful sculptures as the works of Daniel Dewer & Grégory Gicquel (FR), Angela Fulcher (UK/ IE) and Ruth E. Lyons (IE) play out side by side. The exploration of space, light and sound will enthral you. Through this exhibition, Project Arts Centre hopes that audiences will engage with art works in new ways, connecting the art and scientific worlds. “Art lies halfway between scientific knowledge and mythical or magical thought. It is common knowledge that the artist is both something of a scientist and of a ‘bricoleur’. By his craftsmanship he constructs a material object which is also an object of knowledge.” (THE SAVAGE MIND - Claude Levi Strauss, 1962)

Ernest Walton (1993-1995), a graduate of Trinity College, working with John Cockcroft, in the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, under Lord Ernest Rutherford, successfully engineered the disintegration of atoms by artificial means on 14 April 1932. Their success resulted in the award of the Nobel Prize for physics in 1951. An exhibition in the Long Room draws on the papers generously presented to the Library by Walton. It includes the Nobel medal and citation, research notebooks from Walton’s undergraduate career, photographs, correspondence (the letter written to his future wife immediately after splitting the atom), evidence of Walton’s concern about the teaching of science and of his enduring commitment to Methodism.

Entrance to this exhibition includes viewing the Book of Kells exhibition.

“Belle Moral” by Ann-Marie Macdonald is an intriguing dark comedy set in a Scottish manor house by the sea at the end of the nineteenth century. After her father’s death, Pearl MacIsaac is persuing her scientific studies inspired by Darwin’s theories of evolution. A family secret is unearthed and everywhere there is the pull of opposites – science vs nature, rational vs supernatural, conscious and unconscious. Belle Moral attempts to reconcile the extremes of rationalism and romanticism and questions the morality of the science of eugenics, which will be discussed by an expert panel following the reading.

Environmental archaeology walking tour of Dublin City Centre by the Irish Palaeoecology and Environmental Archaeology Network (IPEAN) The tour of the Viking and medieval heart of Dublin city draws on insights and perspectives from environmental archaeology. It examines early urban living against its environmental background. The tour will start by the river, a hugely important waterway going back to earliest prehistory. While following Fishamble Street some of the best evidence for early city living will be discussed. At the later site of Back Lane the focus will be shifted to the economies of the medieval and postmedieval period and a contrast of the decline in living standards south of the river with those of their thriving contemporaries north of the river will be made. The return will be through Dublin Castle, the nucleus of the medieval city. The tour will take about an hour and cover 2km partly on steep and uneven ground. It is designed for the general public including interested children.

A 21st Century Perspective” on the evening of Thursday, 12 July in Trinity College Dublin, recreating the Irish event that inspired the discovery of the structure of DNA.

The Festival includes the screening of 32 of the best television and New Media productions involving science from across Europe, and two keynote talks and panel-led discussions. There are prizes for productions in three TV genres – Documentary, Drama and General Programmes – and a New Media category. Four further prizes reflect science in society issues; the environment, women in science, a young jury award and the choice of the theatre audience. So everyone visiting the festival can participate. And free coffee and biscuits are provided in the intervals. Key issues in presenting science on television and new media will surface via the two talks and discussion sessions. On 13 July, the theme is “Making the Invisible Visible”, where particle physics, the environment and drama will be the topics. The keynote speaker is the producer of the BBC documentary “the Hunt for the Higgs Boson”, the ultimate in communicating about the invisible. Environmental issues are also often not visible and present one of the key communication issues. Another communication option is via drama. Encouraging largely arts based TV drama people to take on board science themes is at the heart of a successful German project. Please see www.europaws.org for more info.

The search for the Higgs boson is one of the most important scientific challenges in the world today and an announcement of its discovery, or refutation of its existence, using data taken at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN is imminent. But what exactly is the Higgs boson? Why is it considered so important? How does the LHC produce and detect it? How do thousands of physicists from around the world combine to track it down? And what is Ireland’s involvement in all this? Several eminent scientists will take part in a panel discussion to discuss these issues with the public: Prof. Rolf Heuer who is the director general of CERN; Dr. Steve Myers, the ‘Lord of the Rings’ who is in charge of accelerators at CERN; Oxford theorist, Prof. Frank Close, who has written a book about the Higgs; Prof. Themis Bowcock, an experimental physicist working at CERN; and physicist Dr. Tara Shears who works on the LHC and has broadcast widely about particle physics.

Planet Ocean, directed by Yann ArthusBertrand and Michael Pitiot in partnership with OMEGA is a 90-minute documentary, which draws on the talents of some of the world’s leading aerial and underwater cinematographers, oceanographers and biologists. Created to change the way people look at the oceans and to encourage sea conservation and stewardship as responsibilities shared by everyone on Earth. Phenology is the science of seasonal changes in the lives of plants and animals – bud burst on trees, flowering seasons, migration or nest-building by birds. By completing our ‘family phenology trail’ you can help do valuable work for the Botanic Gardens. We would like you to help us, by recording on what date the buds or flowers of certain trees and shrubs open, as well as the date when butterflies are on the wing. Research shows that climate change has already had a significant impact on the timing of these events in Ireland. The trail will take you to a selection of trees to observe and record your findings. The information you record will be combined with everyone else’s and help us record the impact of climate change at the botanic gardens.
