COURSE: Introduction to AutoCAD ASSIGNMENT: Design a 10’x10’ coffee kiosk. Determine kiosk location, develop design concept, create brand logo and develop brand materials palette.

SOLUTION: • Location: The freestanding kiosk is located within a highend shopping mall and is situated in proximity to public dining tables and casual seating areas. • Design Concept: Inspired by Turkish coffee culture, in which various spices are often added to the coffee brew, and by traditional North African design motifs. • Logo and Materials Palette: Modern interpretation of Turkish/ North African design motifs include details such as laser cut plywood partition, encaustic cement tiles, reclaimed rough-sawn wood paneling and laser cut corten steel sign.

PRIVATE SAFARI TRAIN NAIROBI TO MOMBASA, KENYA

TRAIN ROUTE & PROJECT INSPIRATION

The route for this private safari train takes its passengers through many of Kenya’s most outstanding landscapes and allows tourists to see some of the best wildlife viewing in the country. From Nairobi, the route passes through or near Nairobi NP, Amboseli NP, Mount Kilimanjaro NP, Chyulu Hills NP, and Tsavo East and West National Parks. Side trips by vehicle or small aircraft will transport passengers to various parks and safari lodges, depending on the itinerary. The train route culminates in Mombasa, a coastal city on the Indian Ocean with beautiful and restful beach communities a short distance to the North.

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN: Envelop Through Exposure & Enclosure

ASSIGNMENT: To create a model illustrating design intent using one of the following concepts: -Envelop through exposure & enclosure -Repetition through solid & void -Scale through compression & expansion

SOLUTION: To draw on the circular shape of the local Maasai architecture as a framework for the design intent. The traditional Maasai enclosure, called a boma, can be built as a livestock enclosure, a community enclosure, a small fort or a district government office. Private and semi-private circular seating was conceptualized for the lounge car of the train to create spaces that offer a sense of exposure and enclosure.

PROGRAMMATIC BUBBLE DIAGRAMS Bubble diagrams were developed to locate and determine square footage for programmatic uses in the lounge and dining cars. Determining factors for spatial layout include how the placement of required spaces supports the design intent conceptualized in the model, as well as how placement supports proposed entry experiences, primary and secondary spaces, and transitional spaces.

Safari lodges and game drives offer many opportunities for tourists to engage with other guests from different parts of the world, as well as with local people providing services to tourists. As such, the main lounge seating area is designed to encourage interaction between groups of tourists participating in the private safari train tour. The lounge offers a comfortable, interactive environment for tour participants to view the African landscape and wildlife, and make new friends. Design materials are sourced from local artisans including colorful local fabric for upholstery, colorful woven baskets fabricated into hanging pendant lights, local beadwork fabricated into a ceiling art installation above the main lounge seating area and reclaimed wood.

Rejuuve Health & Spa

Rejuuve Health & Spa Course: Interior Materials and Sources Assignment: Final Project Requirements: • Concept development (building design not included) • Building code research related to interior materials and ADA requirments • Development of plans and elevations indicating finish materials for two rooms on each of three levels (two rooms included in portfolio)

• Development of a job book containing interior finish specifications, manufacturer’s specifications, installation and product maintenance documents

PROJECT BACKGROUND & CONCEPT: Rejuuve Health & Spa is part of an adaptive re-use project sited within a converted shopping mall in the core downtown area of Bellevue, Washington. This adaptive re-use project will offer the public a comprehensive multi-business holistic retreat center. The various holistic health businesses comprising the retreat center are to be carefully selected to complement each other and provide a complete retreat experience. Rejuuve Health & Spa will be the primary tenant and will include a state-of-the-art health club and spa, as well as a 5-star restaurant focused on locally sourced health-conscious foods served in a casual chic setting. The Client’s goal is to create a warm, earthy, community-focused facility that will offer total rejuvenation to its clientele – mental, physical and emotional. Client requirments are to design a facility where people will come to reconnect with themselves, as well as others; a place where people can feel fully relaxed and feel that they are surrounded by a caring community. While the building design for the facility is complete, the Client requires full interior design services, including material selection and sourcing, and interior specifications. Material selection is to draw from the project concept of total rejuvenation in a warm and earthy environment.

COLOR THEORY For my color key scheme, I used three sets of complimentary colors – red/green, purple/yellow, and blue/ orange. I altered the saturation, value, tone, shade and/or tint levels in each of the colors so that each color is more muted than its pure hue, and has a bit of a gray undertone. This was done so that the colors would not be overly vibrant and clash with one another, and to create a harmonious color palette that was easy on the eyes. The only color that I made a bit more vibrant and saturated is the yellow color that I used to indicate circulation. I did this so the circulation space would stand out a bit more and allow all the spaces to be easily differentiated, and to create a sense of organization to the spaces. The color for each space was chosen to create a sense of hierarchy. I used green for the administrative offices to indicate more mundane procedural services, and I used red for management offices to indicate a higher-level function. I used purple for the conference room to indicate the important and unique feature of this space which provides a designated location for co-workers and clients to come together to communicate, cooperate and work directly with one another. Lastly, I used blue for the W.C./toilets to reference water, and orange for the kitchen to reference cooking and comfort.
