PRE PHARMACY DAY The campus organization Pre-Pharmacy Society (PPS), in conjunction with the Biological Sciences Students Affairs Office, hosted an all-day, pre-pharmacy event on January 29th.
The main guest of honor was Dr. Jennifer Adams, the Senior Director of Strategic Academic Partnerships at the AACP (American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy). Dr. Adams spoke throughout the day in various workshops, going through PharmCAS applications, interview tips, and more. In addition to workshops, various pharmacy school admittance counselors were invited
to come speak with students about their respective pharmacy schools. Chapman School of Pharmacy, University of the Pacific, Campbell University, and California Northstate were amongst the schools boothing. Overall, the day was a success: questions were answered, free goodies were given out, and opportunities in the future of all of UCI’s pre-pharmacy undergraduates had never looked more promising.

tell us about yourself? Hi, my name’s Jenny and I’m currently a fourth year. I’m involved in Flying Sams, and I also volunteer in some events for Pre-Pharmacy Society. I also work in Dr. Martin’s research lab (Chemistry Department). We study structural proteins and mutations to provide insight for the mechanisms of cataracts.

Tasks as food and drug administration interns? At the FDA, we analyzed two regulatory cases. We figured out what policies firms weren’t adhering to and how the FDA got involved. We then presented that information to other complaince officers. In addition, we went to meetings to learn more about FDA laws and what measures companies were taking to prevent further FDA intervention.
My favorite memory was working with Jasmine and other compliance officers on the Model-Entitled Project. We looked at companies that weren’t providing product updates to the FDA, despite the fact that the FDA mandates such information for health safety purposes. I felt like I was being involved in something that would impact public health in the long run.
why choose pharmacy? I knew I wanted to be in healthcare for the patient interaction. Pharmacists are required to do drug consultations so they get that patient one-on one time to connect with them individually. It’s that kind of time and effort that pharmacists provide to their patients that I want to pursue.
It stemmed from a personal interest. In high school , I had a health condition that was poorly diagnosed so I took matters in my own hands. I spent a lot of time researching about drugs, mechanism of actions, lifestyle components, etc. That curiosity led me to pharmacy.

was tricky finding the time to balance the two. Sometimes I did stay longer to finish powerpoints or read more about my cases only to lose track of time. The people there are really nice. They want their students to learn and develop.

q: What is your year and major? A: I am a fourth year pharmaceutical Sciences Major q: What was your inspiration for the mural? A: I took a bit of knowledge i gained from my pharm sci classes and tried to incorporate it into the mural. I wanted to display the natural and biosynthetic sources that serve as the foundations of drug design with the flower & lab equipment. The human body represents what pharmacy is intended for: the healing and improvement of human health. Q: What is your favorite medium to work with? A: Acrylic paints. I find them easy to work with and if I mess up, I can always paint over. q: What made you become a pharm sci major / become interested in pharm sci? a: I wanted to learn about science with more emphasis in medicine. I also knew that pharm sci was a unique major and it would offer classes that were more relevant to what i wanted to do in the future. q: What are your goals for after graduation? a: I’m planning to apply to pharm scools this year in hopes of admission for fall 2015. During my year off, I’m going to try to work and gain more experience in a pharmacy setting, continue volunteering, and if i have time, travel anywhere. q: Any closing Comments? a: Just wanted to thank the Pharm Sci dept for giving me this opportunity!

Q: What is your year and major? A: I am a first year art major. q: How did you hear about the contest? A: I got an email and I wasn’t gonna do it, since there are so many art majors at this school, but my sister told me to do it since I had nothing to lose. I ended up winning, which is good for my career! q: what was your inspiration? A: I thought about something light, since the students will probably be stressed out, so I thought of bubbles for the little kid inside everyone. q: What do you plan on doing with your prize money? a: Give it to my parents. They’ve been paying for my car for a while and I want to do something nice. q: What do you want to do with your degree? A: I might double major with art history, but I really want to work in a museum. I might also teach, since it’s hard finding a job at a museum. q: Did you always want to be an art major?
A: I’ve always liked art. by junior/senior year, I was really into it. I took a lot of ap art classes and had to convince my parents. They wanted me to be an engineer, but it’s not what I want to do. Q: Do you have any advice for incoming students? A: Just pay attention to emails! They’re very important. and if you see yourself somewhere in the future, stick to your plans and work hard.

A newer addition to the Pharm. Sci family, Dr. Mobley takes a seat to discuss teaching, research, milestones, and much more!
Q: Tell us a bit about your educational background and teaching background. A: Well,I received my undergraduate and graduate education from UC Davis obtaining a BS/MS in Physics. I then went on to conduct postdoctoral work at UCSF in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. After that, I started my faculty career as a Professor of Chemistry at the Univ. of New Orleans. Q: In the past, what types of research did you take part in and what kinds of research are you involved in now? A: As an undergraduate I mostly took part in physics research, more specifically high energy physics, then as a graduate student I did research involving biophysics related to diseases. I also worked on a small part of the project which ultimately led to the discovery of the Higgs Boson. Currently, my research is mostly computational, focused on developing computer techniques that will help guide the discovery of new drugs. Particularly, I work on predicting protein-ligand interactions. PharmSci 177, what kind of advice or expectations do you have for students entering your course? A: As with any other course, there is
a substantial amount work that needs to be put in order to be successful. So students need to be actively listening and learning in lecture rather than hiding behind a computer screen playing Tetris. It’s a bit ironic that higher education seems to be one of the few things where we are happy to get less for our money. To do well in my class, students should avoid that attitude. Q: Since we’re talking about teaching, how would you describe your personal teaching style. A: My teaching style is probably best described as ‘straightforward’. Since PharmSci 177 focuses on how drugs work, I do use slides and a lot of graphics. I also like iClicker since it not only helps students pay attention, but also provides realtime feedback. Q: Earlier, you talked a bit about contributing to the discovery of the Higgs Boson. Do you have any other professional milestones or a certain goal you’re striving towards? A: My main objective is to get the tools we are developing to the point where they play a key role in the pharmaceutical drug discovery process, accelerating discovery of new drugs.

I also plan to travel the world, have crazy adventures, and improve my drawing skills. One lifetime goal though is to design my own house; just because it seems like fun, and because I love to create things. A definite addition to my future house: a well-stocked personal library. Personality in three words: amicable, peaceful, inquisitive Now describe how those three words relate to you: I enjoy meeting new people, collaborating with others, or just chatting so don’t be shy and say hello! As for peaceful, I’m generally soft-spoken and have a go with the flow, flexible attitude. Lastly, I’m a curious individual. I always like learning new things and figuring out how things work. There’s just so much you can study, try, and master which makes life just so diverse and exciting. The possibilities are endless. Random fact about yourself: My favorite singer is Sara Bareilles though I currently adore the Frozen soundtrack. I will spontaneously burst out into song. Name: Maycy Vu Grade Level: 3rd Year General Interests: Art, reading & writing, graphic design, technology Describe a personal goal(s): I just want to keep improving my art and writing skills! Hopefully in the future, I will be able to earn some money selling art, as a sort of stress-reliever while I’m still in school or even while working. As for writing, it’s more of a hobby. I do hope to get published one day, though! Personality in three words: Lively, artistic, and down to earth. Now describe how those three words relate to you: I’m lively because I get excited about things very easily!! I always bother my friends IN CAPSLOCK when I get excited over something. I’m artistic because I love drawing and computer graphics! I’m self-taught, but I would love to take classes if I ever get the chance. And finally, I’m down to earth because I try to be as realistic as possible and try to keep a steady head. Name: Amber Sue Alvela Grade Level: 2nd Year General Interests: reading fictional stories, walking my dog, blogs and blogging. Describe a personal goal(s): One of my lifetime goals is to write my own fictional book, which may or may not turn into a trilogy or saga if time permits. I’m not saying I’m going to become the next Suzanne Collins or Stephenie Meyer (since I don’t really want to be), but it would be such a great feeling knowing that millions of readers enjoy the fictional world that is floating around in my head. As for a less distant goal, I really want to visit Great Britain and maybe even live there someday. Personality in three words: Introverted. Future enthusiast. Quirky. Now describe how those three words relate to you: Introverted because if I was given the choice of going out with friends on a Friday night or staying home enjoying a good book, chances are I’d be searching up books to read before I even get home. I’m a complete future enthusiast; I seriously don’t live in the present. I’m always thinking about “what’s next” and find myself pondering about how my life will be years from today. Some people say they’re awkward, but I’m taking it to a next level: quirky. I just have really peculiar behavior sometimes…even I can’t comprehend some of my actions.
