Blast from the Past! At Compass Rose Benefits Group (CRBG), we are proud of our unique history and feel privileged to offer our products and services to civilian employees and retirees of the Intelligence Community, Department of Defense, and Department of State. For over 60 years, we have taken pride in offering exceptional service, consistent rate stability, and unwavering security to our exclusive cadre of members. This Open Season, in our continuing efforts to provide exceptional member service, we would like to take this opportunity to show you just how far we have come. The Beginning of Compass Rose Benefits Group: In 1948, only one year after the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was established, the Mutual Benefit Health & Accident Association created an organization known as the Government Employees Health Association (GEHA) that catered exclusively to Agency employees and their unique needs. Through GEHA, Agency employees were able to obtain low-cost group health insurance plans. During the last five years, we expanded our health plan eligibility to include all civilian employees and retirees of the Intelligence Community, Department of Defense, and Department of State. While our health plan has experienced many names over the years, today we are simply known as the Compass Rose Health Plan.

Community Compass Outreach Compass Rose Charities Raises Over $65,000 to Support American Heroes! On October 6, 2011, Compass Rose Charities hosted their 2nd Annual Golf Invitational and Auction at the Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City, Maryland. Over 90 participants attended the Invitational. We had the distinct privilege to host the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper and his wife, Sue -- as well as two New York Jets sports legends, John Schmidt and Greg Buttle. Because of the generosity of our vendor sponsorships and auction winners, we were able to raise over $65,000!

Established in 2010, Compass Rose Charities, Inc. Compass Rose Supports U.S. Soldiers Overseas! At Compass Rose Benefits Group (CRBG), we strongly believe that it is our civic duty as Americans to support our soldiers fighting overseas. This September, we chose to show our support and gratitude to the brave men, women, and canine companions fighting overseas to protect our country’s freedoms by donating over 900 perishable items to support the Give2theTroops Organization. Since 2002, Give2theTroops has supported approximately 1 million deployed U.S. soldiers with loving care packages and letters from all over the nation. Their mission is to support the physical, moral, and spiritual health of America’s Armed Forces deployed to combat and disaster relief zones around the world with letters and packages prepared and shipped by caring volunteers. If you would like to learn more about the Give2theTroops Organization, please visit www.give2thetroops.org.

“Our military and our military families can’t be the only ones bearing the burden of our security. The United

States of America is strongest -- and as Americans, we

are at our best -- when we remember our obligations to

each other; when we remember that the price of freedom cannot simply be paid by a select few, when we embrace our responsibilities to each other, especially those who serve and sacrifice in our name.” -President Barack Obama

health plan News Hello Medco! As announced in a previous mailing, the Compass Rose Health Plan has decided to partner with Medco Health Solutions, Inc., a leader in pharmaceutical care and services, to manage our Prescription Drug Benefit beginning January 1, 2012. However, after that decision was made, Express Scripts, Inc. (ESI) and Medco announced that their companies intended to merge. This merger must be approved by the Federal Trade Commission. This potential merger will not affect Medco’s role as our health plan’s new Prescription Benefit Manager (PBM) beginning January 1, 2012.

Who is Medco? Medco Health Solutions Inc. was established in 1983 and became an independent company in 2003. Today, Medco supports our nation’s largest mail-order pharmacy operations by working directly with their extensive nationwide network of pharmacists, physicians, and benefit specialists who are trained to help you achieve optimal health and overall savings on your prescription medications. Understanding the Transition!

How Will This Transition Affect Me? As a health plan member, sit back and relax – we’ve got you covered! Because we are determined to make this transition seamless for you, beginning January 1, 2012, most refills remaining with your current Express Scripts Mail-Order Pharmacy will AUTOMATICALLY be transferred to the Medco Pharmacy! Controlled substances and compound medications cannot be transferred. If you are taking one of these medications or if you are currently using a mail-order pharmacy other than Express Scripts or CuraScript, you must obtain a new prescription from your doctor.

After January 1, 2012, you will be able to request a refill of a mail-order prescription in one of three ways: 1.) Online - Use your Compass Rose Health Plan member identification (ID) number and current prescription number to activate your account by visiting www.medco.com/pharmacy. 2.) By Mail - Send your prescription to the Medco Pharmacy: Medco Health Solutions, P.O. Box 30117, Tampa, FL 33630 3.) By Phone - Simply provide a Medco Representative with your health plan member ID number by calling (877) 438-4449.

How Will This Transition Affect the Price of My Prescription Medications? As your health plan, it is our responsibility to ensure that you understand how this transition will affect your out-of-pocket health care expenses. While our PBM is changing your prescription medication co-pays, how you obtain prescription refills, and your Prescription Medication Formulary Guide will not change. Medco will continue to offer you the same Pharmacy Plan Benefits as Express Scripts.

HEALTH TIPS Tips On How to Stay Healthy This Flu Season! Did you know that every year there is an estimated 25 to 50 million cases of the flu reported, which leads to more than 200,000 hospitalizations and an average of 23,600 deaths annually? While the flu season in the U.S. is usually from fall through early spring, the peak of flu season occurs anywhere from late November through March. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year. This year, the 2011/2012 flu vaccine will protect against the three influenza viruses - the influenza A (H1N1) virus, the influenza A (H3N2) virus, and the influenza B virus – that research indicates will be most common during this upcoming flu season. In addition to getting vaccinated this flu season, the CDC also recommends following these everyday steps to protect you and your family’s health: • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. You can also use an alcohol-based hand cleaner. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread this way. As your health plan, we encourage you to take an active role in your health care this flu season! As a Compass Rose Health Plan member, the flu vaccine is 100 percent covered under our Plan’s Preventative Care Benefit. So what are you waiting for? Contact your local health care provider to schedule an appointment today! The best way to protect yourself from the flu is now, before the flu season begins.

Family life Fighting Today’s Epidemic In the last two decades, the number of obese adults in the U.S. has doubled. Today, over two-thirds of the adult population is overweight and of those, 30 percent are considered obese. According to the National Institute for Health Care Management, our nation’s obesity epidemic is the result of numerous complex and intertwined factors including: •

Diet

Cultural issues

Sedentary lifestyles

Genetics

Community planning

• Resistance to change practice patterns within the health care provider community

Stressful work schedules

Low literacy

• Availability of relatively few medical interventions • Competition for scarce public dollars

What Is the Difference Between Overweight and Obesity? Overweight: Overweight specifically refers to an excessive amount of body weight that may come from muscles, bone, adipose (fat) tissue, and water. Obesity: Obesity specifically refers to an excessive amount of adipose tissue.

While these factors can vary from person to person, there is no disputing the health related issues associated with obesity. Research published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services shows that overweight adults have a 60 percent increased risk of diabetes, an 80 percent increased risk of high blood pressure, and a 50 percent higher likelihood of elevated cholesterol levels. For adults diagnosed as being obese, these numbers increase dramatically. Additional risk factors commonly diagnosed in overweight and obese adults include: •

Coronary Heart Disease

Stroke

Hypertension

• Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease •

Gallbladder Disease

Osteoarthritis

• Sleep Apnea and other breathing problems • Certain forms of cancer (breast, colorectal, endometrial, and kidney) • Complications of pregnancy •

Menstrual irregularities

Unfortunately, because there is no single cause of overweight and obesity, there is no single way to prevent or treat this disease. Common treatments often include a combination of diet, exercise, behavior modification, and sometimes weight-loss prescription medications. In some cases of extreme obesity, bariatric surgery may be recommended. However, it is important to be properly diagnosed by a qualified medical practitioner before beginning any obesity treatments. Remember, the treatment that may be right for you may not necessarily be right for your friend.

Family life Find an Exercise That Suits Your Body Type Let’s discuss some fun and easy ways to becoming more active and healthy — in mind, body, and soul. First, if exercise is not really your idea of a fun time, begin slowly! Dr. J. James Rohack, President of the American Medical Association, promotes “quality movement,” and discusses how patients can work it into their daily lives. Switching simple daily routines around can increase your heart rate and increase your endorphins! In 2008, the Department of Health and Human Services issued its Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. They recommend that adults get a total of 2½ hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or a total of 1¼ hours of vigorous activity weekly.

Here are some easy tips to help get you started! • Walk to work or the grocery store instead of driving • Go for a walk with your family after dinner • Take the stairs at work instead of the elevator • Eliminate sodas and fats from your diet. Increase the amount of water you drink a day

If you already find yourself doing these suggestions, try these exercises for 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week: • Go biking with your friends • Take brisk walks around your neighborhood • Sign up for water aerobics • Challenge yourself by locating hiking trails around your home • General gardening • Try shopping at your local Farmers Markets instead of local grocery stores! The foods found at the Farmer Markets are a lot healthier because they are fresh and not filled with preservatives.

Finally, because there are definitive correlations between healthy living and longevity, try incorporating some of these easy tips into your daily lifestyle and your body will thank you!

What’s up doc? Oral Cancer When you hear the word cancer, what comes to mind? Well, according to the American Cancer Society, there are 71 known types of cancer. Arguably some of the most common types include: breast cancer, skin cancer, cervical cancer, leukemia, colon cancer, and lung cancer. Because cancer has the power to affect nearly every part of the human body, it should be no surprise that your lips, tongue, mouth, and throat are also at risk of developing the disease. In 2010, there was an estimated 36,540 reported new cases of oral cancer in the United States. To date, there are two known types of oral cancer: 1.) Oral Cavity Cancer – This cancer develops in the mouth 2.) Oropharyngeal Cancer – This cancer develops in the throat just behind the mouth While the American Cancer Society recommends that primary care doctors and dentists examine the mouth and throat as part of a routine cancer-related check-up, there are many signs and symptoms associated with oral cancer that you can look for as well. The most common symptoms include: • • • •

Who Is At Risk?

A sore in the mouth that bleeds easily and does not heal Pain in the mouth that does not go away A lump or thickening in the cheek A white or red patch on the gums, tongue, tonsil, or lining of the mouth • A sore throat or a feeling that something is caught in the throat • Difficulties in chewing, swallowing, or moving the tongue or jaw

American Cancer Society studies show that oral cancers are twice as common in men as in women. Even though the risk of developing oral cancer increases with age, especially after age 35, nearly half of all oral cancers are diagnosed in people older than age 62. Additional oral cancer risk factors include: •

obacco Use – Nearly 80 percent of people diagnosed with oral cancer use tobacco products. This risk increases T even more depending on the amount smoked or chewed and the duration of the habit.

Alcohol Consumption – Nearly 70 percent of people diagnosed with oral cancer regularly consume alcohol.

un Exposure – Studies show that people diagnosed with cancers of the lip usually work outdoor jobs associated S with prolonged sun exposure.

Diet – A diet low in fruits and vegetables can increase your risk of developing cancer of the oral cavity.

uman Papilloma Virus (HPV) Infection – Recent studies suggest that HPV may contribute to the development H of approximately 20 to 30 percent of oral cancer cases. However, it is not yet clear if the use of HPV vaccines, such as Cervarix and Gardasil, will affect oral cancer rates in the future.
