Texas Hot to celebrate 100 years in Wellsville BY KATHRYN ROSS

WELLSVILLE — It will be a big two-day thank you for the people who have supported them for the last century. So says Mike Raptis, who, with his daughter Isabella and his son Demetrous, have been planning the celebration for the Texas Hot’s 100th anniversary. Raptis, speaking before the village board at the end of June, asked for the lifting of the noise ordinance and a partial easing of the open container law for the July 8-9 event. “Things are looking good,” Raptis said. “We’re still in the process of deciding what movies we’re going to sponsor at the library, but things are going well and coming together.” He added that his daughter Isabella is the point person for the festivities. Quickly correcting a falsehood that there will be a beer tent, Raptis explained there will be a tent and those who wish to will be able to purchase a beer at Better Days and walk down the street to drink it under a tent pitched between the old Municipal Building and Hart’s Jewelry on Jefferson Street. Raptis said the sidewalk between Better Days and the tent will be cordoned off between the trees and the

buildings, allowing for the beer walk. The curb to the trees will be open for non-drinking pedestrians. He emphasized that there will be beer drinking only under the tent and that security will be watching. Under the big top the night of July 8 (a Friday) Alex Cole will play acoustic music, starting at 5 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by the Off Constantly Comedy Show featuring four professional comedians until around 9:30 p.m. Those attending the free show are encouraged to sit down and enjoy the fun under the canvas. There will be security and only one access point. Beer drinkers will be wearing special identification On July 9 the combined Texas Hot and Great Wellsville Balloon Rally Parade will get started at 11 a.m. After-

wards, Main Street will be closed to vehicular traffic between Madison and Pearl streets. Vendors will be selling their wares on the street and on the library lawn until 8 p.m. In the Jones Memorial Clinic parking lot, the Wellsville Lions Club will sell Texas Hots at a cost of $5 for four. There will be no other food vendors except for cotton candy and candy apples. Along with the vendors and artisans there will be kid’s games on the library lawn, jugglers, alpacas, SPCA animals, a dunk tank, a juggler and hula hooper. For the adults there will be wine tasting, line dancing and caricatures by Eric Jones. From 3 to 7 p.m. under the Jefferson Street tent there will be music by Public Water Supply. Lucky Number

will play afterwards to 11 p.m. The same rules from Friday night will be followed on Saturday. Raptis told the board, “Our idea is to have a family friendly activity that the kids

will enjoy while their parents are sitting down and having a beverage under the tent. We hope people from all around Western New York well come too Wellsville for the anniversary celebration. It is designed

to say thank you to the people who have supported the Texas Hot over the years.” The board approved the event permit and lifting the noise ordinance and open container rules.

Bronze plaques pried from 13 veterans’ gravesites in Wellsville BY KATHRYN ROSS

WELLSVILLE — The investigation is continuing into the theft of military service plaques from the gravesites of 13 veterans in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Last month, on his daily walk through the cemetery, Mike Baldwin noticed something horrifying to most people. He discovered that several bronze plaques

noting military service had been forcibly removed from the backs of veterans’ graves. He notified police and it was determined that 13 plaques had been stolen. Police Chief Tim O’Grady said this week that the investigation of the thefts continues. “We’ve been in contact with all the scrap metal dealers around to be on the lookout for

these bronze military plaques, but I expect the plaques have been cut up,” the chief said. He added that the department received a response from a scrap yard after the department issued to statewide notice, but that the plaques in their possession were not stolen from Wellsville. Scrap bronze was worth between $2.30 and $2.60 a pound

within the last month, according to dealers’ website listings. O’Grady said the $13,000 reward for information is a far greater amount than the thieves would have received for cashing in the plaques — and a far greater incentive for someone to step forward with information. O’Grady said due to the rough surface of the gravestones that were

desecrated, his department was not able to lift fingerprints to be used in solving the crime. The response to the desecration of the veterans’ graves was immediate. The Wellsville American Legion Post 702 put up a $2,000 reward that was quickly increased by local clubs, politicians, families and individuals. Bronze Plaques continued on PAGE 5

FRANKLINVILLE — Construction crews are moving a lot of earth at the 200-acre Great Lakes Cheese plant site, which straddles the Franklinville/Farmersville line along Route 16, Concrete foundations and footers have also been poured for the 486,000-square-foot, state-of-the art cheese plant expected to cost more than $500 million to build. “Everything is looking good so far,” said Matt Wilkinson, Great Lakes Cheese Co. vice president for technology and business development. “Everything is on schedule.” Great Lakes Cheese officials held a groundbreaking for the project, which will eventually replace its Cuba plant, on April 28. About 230 people attended. A lot of work has been done in that two-month period. The earthmoving, Wilkinson said, serves a two-fold purpose. Hauling soil from one part of

the site to lower areas will level the building site. In addition, the weight of the soil will force water out of sand and gravel strata below the surface. “The elevation has to be brought to the correct level,” Wilkinson said. Union Concrete and Construction Co. of West Seneca is doing site work and Pile Concrete Co., Frieden, Pa., is working on concrete

footers and foundations. Both are doing a great job, Wilkinson said. The concrete floor for the plant will come much later. First, structural steel will be erected beginning next month. Right now there are about 40 construction workers at the site — mostly excavating and moving dirt. At peak construction in the summer of 2023 there

will be between 400 and 500 workers a day at the site. The first production in the plant will be packaging of cheese from other plants beginning in the first quarter of 2024. By the time the third quarter rolls around, Great Lakes employees should be ready to begin producing cheese at the new plant. The 230 employees at the existing Great Lakes Cheese Co. plant in Cuba will move to the new Franklinville plant in stages as production is shifted. More than 200 Great Lakes continued on PAGE 5

Daisy Award Comes to Jones Memorial WELLSVILLE, NY (June 28, 2022) – If you or a family member have ever been an inpatient, you know firsthand the difference an exceptional nurse can make on that experience. The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses is part of the DAISY Foundation’s mission to recognize the exceptional compassionate care nurses provide patients and families every day.

Beginning July 1, you can thank an exceptional nurse at Jones Memorial Hospital by nominating him or her for the DAISY Award. All nominees receive a DAISY pin. Once a year, the committee will review the nominations received during the previous year and select one of the nurses for the DAISY Award. The winner of this very distinguished award will be recognized na-

tionally and presented with a unique sculpture called The Healer’s Touch. The winning nurse is also eligible for educational opportunities and grants from the DAISY Foundation. An international organization, the DAISY Foundation was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by his family after his death in late 1999 at age 33 from complications of an auto-immune disease. DAISY, an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System, was a way for the family to thank not only the nurses who cared for Patrick – and by extension his family - but exceptional nurses everywhere. “We are excited to partner with the DAISY Foundation on this wonderful program,”

said Sharon Draper, Senior Director of Nursing at Jones Memorial Hospital. “The impact of extraordinary nurses goes beyond the patient and extends to the family and friends. This award gives them a way to thanks our nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.” Patients, their families, and friends can all nominate a nurse for the Daisy Award. Nominations can be submitted on line at https://app.roundsplus.getwellnetwork. com/SurveyAction/ SurveyGo/xjvBd5ceWj6Sz?u=4374 or by submitting a paper nomination in one of the nominations boxes located throughout Jones Memorial.

The reward currently stands at $13,000. Further donations can be made by calling the Legion at (585) 593-5345. For Allegany County Veteran’s Services Coordinator Mike Henessey, the desecration of veterans’ graves and the theft of memorial plaques is personal: One of the stolen plaques is from the graves of his relatives. “People are mad. People are very mad,” he said. “They are angry that someone wood do this. I can’t understand it. Nothin’ but slugs would do this kind of thing.” He said the word went out right away when the American Legion 8th District released the information to other posts urging members to check their cemeteries for the same vandalism. Henessey, in his county position, is involved in obtaining the memorial plaques for veterans at the request of families. The cost

of obtaining a plaque, which records the date of birth and death of the veteran along with the date of his or her military service, rank and branch of service, is $1,800. Locally, they are installed at a cost of $150. The plaques are bolted and glued to the stone, making it no easy task to remove them. Henessey said efforts to replace the plaques are already underway, but that it will take

several months before they arrive. He hopes they will be in place by Veterans Day. When the plaques do arrive, Henessey said that Hart’s Memorials has said they will install them at no cost. “I don’t understand why anyone would do such a thing to the graves of men and women who fought for their lives and liberty,” he said. The names of the men whose graves were

desecrated are: Richard Brunell, Chester Kensek, Edward Curtis, Donald Aiken, Theodore Jedinak, Merle Shay, William Hennessy, John Hennessy, Dennis Shea, Howard Englebaugh, Robert Healey, James or Patrick Hennessy and Richard Deschler. Contact the Wellsville Police Department at (585) 593-5600 with any information concerning the theft of the bronze military plaques.

new employees will also be needed to staff the new plant. Great Lakes Cheese had looked at 100 possible building sites in Allegany and Cattaraugus counties in contemplation of the move. After its preferred site in Allegany County fell through just over a year ago, a Freedom farmer who owned 200 acres along Route 98 in Franklinville and Farmersville called the company and said it was available and just what they were looking for. Great Lakes Cheese was very interested. The new site was 16 miles from the Cuba plant, enabling its employees to keep their jobs and not have to drive a longer distance. The Cattaraugus County Legislature worked with Corey Wiktor of the county’s Industrial Development Agency and provided $450,000 for site studies. Later, legislators added $8 million to run water and sewer lines to the site. A new power line is also on the way to the site from a nearby Machias substation.

On Wednesday evening, June 29, the Belmont Rotary Club celebrated the past year under President Steve Fleischman. After a wonderful dinner at the Off Duty Club, President Steve recounted club accomplishments of the past year. The gavel was passed from President Steve to incoming President, Dana Hand. Thank you, Steve, for your leadership this past year! Now on to another great Rotary Year with our new leader!

Fireplace trends help create attractive, comfortable rooms Fireplaces are useful features in a home. Fireplaces are sources of ambient heat and also add style to indoor spaces. Fireplaces can complement just about any interior style. Fireplaces can be traditional and burn wood or connect

to a home’s natural gas supply for on-demand ambiance. What’s more, fireplaces may come in vented or ventless varieties, depending on homeowners’ preferences and what is allowed by community building codes. That means a chimney or

flue may not be needed — expanding the list of rooms where a fireplace can be installed. Certain trends have emerged among fireplace fans in recent years. Here’s a look at what’s getting consumers fired up about these home decor elements. • Minimalist style: Many fireplaces are designed in neutral colors with minimal trim that directs focus on the fire and not the appliance. When the fireplace is not in use, it blends in with surroundings and will not compete for

attention with other design elements. • Convertible fireplaces: Homeowners can choose between open or sealed fireplaces. A convertible fireplace enables homeowners to have the best features of these options. A convertible fireplace can be converted to wood from gas, or the opposite, in as little as 30 minutes.

Vintage continues to be a buzzword in 2022, and the choice to go vintage also applies to fireplace styles. A room decorated in vintage elements can be complemented with a vintage fireplace or one designed to look vintage. • Integrate into wall decor: Fireplaces that are built right into a wall save space. One can

have a television and a fireplace on the same wall. These types of fireplaces work well in modern home designs. Other fireplaces may be built into bookshelves or other wall features. Fireplaces can improve the appeal of a home. Various trends are popular this year, making fireplaces highly coveted features.

• Nature-inspired materials: Natural stone continues to be a material of choice in fireplace surrounds. Light colors work well for a fireplace, and also fit with today’s lighter color interior design preferences. Natural stone also works perfectly with both contemporary and rustic decor. • Vintage fireplaces:
