Helms will lead Jones Memorial Hospital when Benedict retires WELLSVILLE — James Helms, a vice president and chief fi nancial officer of Jones Memorial Hospital, will take over as the hospital’s president and chief executive in July upon the retirement of Eva Benedict. The Jones Memorial board of directors announced the appointment, which will take effect July 16, on Monday. Benedict, a registered nurse who has worked at Jones for four decades, served the last 14 years as CEO. Helms, in addition to his VP and CFO role at Jones, has also been serving as chief financial officer at St. James Hospital in Hornell since 2019. “Jim has the experience, commitment, and the hardearned confidence of the hospital board members,” said

Richard Ewell, chairman of the JMH board. Of Benedict, Ewell said she “has been an incredible advocate for the hospital and rural healthcare. She is wellknown to our state and federal representatives and will be missed. Eva used her unique combination of leadership ability, work ethic, kindness and wisdom to guide our Hospital through many challenges. “Our board has the utmost respect for her and wish her well in the future,” Ewell added. “Moving forward, we are looking forward to working with Jim in his new role.” Helms and Benedict have worked together for a number of years. Under their leadership, Jones secured $13 million in Vital Access Provider Program (VAP) grants, which helped to fund

operational improvements and start up new programs, resulting in a positive operating margin in just over three years. They also secured a total of $23.7 million in New York State Transformation grants for both electronic medical record (EMR) conversion as well as the medical village construction, which includes a third-floor expansion for a provider clinic and operating room and fi xed MRI additions. When faced with service line closures due to the COVID pandemic, Helms secured a combined $8 million for Jones Memorial and St. James in paycheck protection funding and avoiding staffing reductions. “I have worked closely with Jim for several years and I have every confidence that he

will successfully lead Jones Memorial in the future,” Benedict said. “He has demonstrated his leadership abilities and dedication to Jones and our community as CFO of both Jones and St. James.” She said Helms is also highly respected by the management team at Jones and by the UR Medicine leadership. Steven I. Goldstein, senior vice president of the University of Rochester Medical Center who oversees UR Medicine regional hospitals, and also serves as president and CEO of Strong Memorial and Highland hospitals in Rochester, noted that in eight years Helms has taken on increased levels of leadership responsibility that have prepared him to

Farmer’s Market interest growing in Wellsville BY KATHRYN ROSS

WELLSVILLE – Plans are growing for a farmer’s market to take place in Wellsville this summer. Stephen Caton and his wife Amanda, both instructors at Alfred State College, like farmer’s markets. They were pleased to fi nd one in Wellsville when they moved to the village a year ago. But with the cancellation of Wellsville’s market due to COVID-19 in 2020 — while markets continued in Angelica, Alfred and Belmont — they were disappointed. That led to the couple deciding to see what they could do, so they contacted the Chamber of Commerce who put them in touch with Whitesville farmer Chris Lukacz. Now the trio is in the process of establishing the Wellsville Village Farmer’s Market. A meeting was held for vendors Wednesday evening, but attendance was less than stellar, maybe Caton theorized because of the suddenly warm and sunny weather. The market, Caton told those at the meeting, will be Farmer's Market continued on page 5

run by a committee and that he has taken the position as the market manager. The market is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays on the lawn of the David A. Howe Library June through September. Caton hopes to have a larger market than was previously held there and that over 15 vendors have already shown interest. The main requisite, he said, is that whatever is sold at the market must be local. “We don’t want this to turn into a rummage sale, so our vendors cannot bring in items that were not made or grown within a 30 miles radius of the village,” he said. The market is open to those selling fruits and vegetables, dairy products, fish products, meat products, maple/honey products, baked goods, prepared foods, craft s, nursery plants, eggs and herbs. ‘We’re open to artisans and bakers and musicians and artists to broaden what the market offers,” he said.

How to Plan for a Future Vacation (Family Features) After a long year stuck at home, many people are dreaming about when they can travel once again. While counting down the days may feel like torture, planning and booking a vacation for later this year can give you something to look forward to. Now may be the perfect time to start thinking about your next adventure. Consider these tips for planning a future trip - even if you’re not certain exactly when you’ll take it. Research Travel Restrictions For any kind of travel, it’s important to make sure you’re up to date on any restrictions your potential destinations may have in place. Though the vaccine may help lessen restrictions in some places, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintain updated guidance and travel warnings based on the risk level of certain areas, which can help you make decisions. Once you’ve booked travel plans, it is prudent to check in frequently as your trip approaches and prepare a backup plan. Account for High Demand Many hotels, vacation rentals and resorts may already be booked for summer in popular locations due to

optimism around the vaccine, increased demand for domestic travel and families planning multiple trips this year. In fact, travelers are locking in private Vrbo vacation homes at top summer destinations earlier in 2021. Less than half of vacation homes in some locations are still available for July, which is a more than 25% increase in demand year-overyear. To better your odds of securing your desired travel dates, accommodations and activities, booking earlier can help off-set the increased demand. “In years past, we’ve recommended families book their summer vacations by late April to stay ahead of the curve, but this year there are several reasons why families are eager and ready to book,” Vrbo President Jeff Hurst said. “These signs are telling us families should start looking for the perfect vacation home now before options become more limited.” Take Advantage of Deals with Longer Stays Many sectors of the travel industry offer special deals for reserving trips in advance, and some of the best deals can be found by bundling airfare and lodging or booking extended weekor month-long stays. These longer vacations can lead

Kitchen Staples Helpful for Heart Health (Family Features) Taking care of your heart health requires a commitment to the right routines and smart decisions, such as adopting a heart healthy diet. Foods you might already have in your kitchen can offer powerful vitamins, minerals and beneficial plant compounds that may help contribute to heart health. Decades of research shows that each 8-ounce serving of 100% orange juice, such as Florida Orange Juice, is packed with key nutrients and valuable plant compounds, which may play a beneficial role in helping lower blood pressure and other risk factors for heart disease. Consider these additional heart health benefits of 100% orange juice: * While many people associate vitamin C with its ability to help promote a healthy immune system, it’s also been shown to support cardiovascular health. Orange juice is an excellent source of vitamin C providing more than 100% of the recommended daily value in an 8-ounce glass. * In several research studies, higher intakes of the flavonoids typically found in citrus were associated with reduced risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke. * In one 8-ounce serving, 100% orange juice provides 10% of the daily value of potassium, which is an electrolyte that helps maintain fluid balance affecting blood pressure. Diets containing foods that are good sources of potassium and low in sodium may

How motorcycle riders can stay safe Warm weather and road trips often go hand-in-hand, and spring and summer are prime seasons for motorcycle riders to get out on the highway. Motorcycle riders are at an extreme disadvantage when sharing the road with cars and trucks. In the event of a collision, motorcycle riders can be seriously injured and are far less protected than those in a car or truck. The latest data indicates motorcyclists are about 28 times as likely as passenger car occupants to die in a motor vehicle crash, states the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Motorcycle riders face greater hazards from debris on the road or other road conditions. Despite all this, the NHTSA says the number of motorcyclists killed in crashes dropped to 4,985 in 2018, marking an almost 5 percent decrease from their most recent study on motorcycling fatalities. Continuing to be safe, and educating oneself

about motorcycle safety — whether you are a rider or someone sharing the road — can continue to keep injuries and accidents low. • Wear protective gear. The NHTSA says the right helmet can mean the difference between life and death. From shape to style to fit, riders can work with helmet companies and outfitters to fi nd the right helmet for them. Long pants, eye protection, riding gloves, and a waterproof jacket also make for effective and protective gear. • Take a class. Novices would be wise to enroll in classes to go over motorcycling basics and safety guidelines that can keep them alive and well on the road. Check with your local motor vehicle commission or driving schools about classes that may be available. • Avoid blind spots. Motorcycles are difficult to see on the road. Try to stay out of vehicles’ blind spots as much as possible and maintain safe distances between

your bike and others on the road. • Make yourself visible. Wear something bright or use reflective or nylon tape and mesh to make yourself more visible to fellow motorists. • Never ride tired or intoxicated. Fatigue and/or alcohol reduces reaction time and could fi nd you making costly

mistakes that put your life in danger. • Share the road responsibly. Drivers of cars and trucks need to be diligent in keeping their eyes and ears open for motorcycle riders, allowing them a wide berth. Motorcyclists will be taking to the roads in increasing numbers, and safety should be their top priority.

The vendors will receive, on a fi rst come fi rst served basis, a 12-foot by 12foot space. The vendors will supply any tents, tables or

The Catons are building a website where each week they will highlight a vendor or performer.
