The Bradford Era 2022 Year in Review

BRMC named Era’s top story for 2022

The year 2022 has brought with it a host of changes to the Bradford area.

In the community this year, conversations about accountability have become more commonplace, with citizens wanting answers from elected officials, from the parent company of our local hospital and from anyone who can explain why local drivers pay more at the pump. These issues are among the Era’s top stories of the year for 2022.

1. Bradford Regional Medical Center

Last year, many of BRMC’s services were moved to Olean (N.Y.) General Hospital, leaving local residents in an uproar about the extreme downsizing of the hospital. In 2022, cardiologist Dr. Steven Herrmann left BRMC for UPMC, publicly berating hospital officials for not supporting his patients when he wasn’t present. He spoke at the Save Bradford Hospital group meetings, expressing his dismay at what BRMC had become.

While the grassroots movement continued to gain supporters, BRMC parent company Kaleida named Bradford native Dr. Jill Owens president of Upper Allegheny Health System.

An August licensing review of BRMC showed dozens of violations, which officials say have since been corrected. In November, it was announced that BRMC would receive $1.07 million for a number of infrastructure upgrades, including replacing the roof on the Pavilion at BRMC.

2. Bradford Township

The Bradford Township supervisors meetings have become so contentious during 2022 that residents who don’t normally attend have left the meetings, saying it resembled a “circus.” After months

of heated exchanges rather than questions and answers, a concerned citizens group has formed to discuss issues, which have been researched and answered by supervisor Laree Sue Behan. However, the contentious tone of the meetings continue.

The supervisors’ operational style has been called into question repeatedly, as citizens say it doesn’t follow the law or common procedures.

3. University of Pittsburgh at Bradford

Bradford native Rick Esch has been named the new president at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. Construction on the new engineering building has been underway, and in 2022, got a tremendous boost of donations from local

industry, the first of which was Zippo Manufacturing. George B. Duke gifted $2 million toward equipping the engineering labs in the new building, which was named the George B. Duke Engineering and Information Technologies Building.

The Met-Ed/ Penelec Sustainable Energy Fund awarded funds toward the green building; Halloran Philanthropies awarded $700,000 to the project; and Northwest Bank gave $200,000.

The new building will be open to students next year.

4. EMS struggles

Volunteer

reaching critical stages. Ambulance companies in rural townships have so few volunteers that some, like Otto Township’s, have closed up shop. Eldred Borough is following suit. The city of Bradford is the first responder for calls within Otto Township now, and Eldred Borough is contracting with another paid company. Rising costs, more training requirements and less volunteerism have created the perfect storm. While legislators are taking notice, it remains unclear exactly what can be done to help.

5. Mayoral changes in Bradford

Nearly three years into a fouryear term as mayor of Bradford, James McDonald announced his resignation in November. Citing increasing demands of family and a promotion at work, McDonald said he was unable to give his family the attention they deserved.

With McDonald’s resignation, former Mayor Tom Riel, who served for 12 years before being unseated by a write-in campaign by McDonald by an 11-vote margin, took office again.

6. Going to the dogs

There are two new officers in the City of Bradford, and their names are K-9 Duke and K-9 Rigby. Duke, with handler Sgt. Seth Shephard, is a city police officer, while Rigby and handler Dakota Eaton work for the McKean County Drug Task Force and city police. The police dogs have been met with delight from members of the public. Fundraisers have been held to cover the cost of the new officers.

Era file photos Bradford Regional Medical Center, and issues surrounding its integration of services with Olean (N.Y.) General Hospital, were named the Era’s top story of 2022. Construction of a new engineering building has been ongoing on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, supported by local businesses. Changes at Pitt-Bradford were named the Era’s number 3 story of the year.

The dogs are handsome, the handlers are friendly, and the community is in love. The suspects, however, aren’t as thrilled.

7. Edward “Bo” Fomby Jr. shot to death in May

On May 29, outside of 166 Congress St. in Bradford, Frederick “Ricky” Camejo, 29, allegedly shot Edward “Bo” Fomby, 38, of Buffalo, N.Y., several times in the back, causing his death. Video evidence from a home surveillance camera appeared to show Fomby turn from an altercation and flee down a set of stairs in front of the house before he was shot four times. No one attempted to help him before first responders arrived, according to the video, shown in court at Camejo’s preliminary hearing in July.

8. Gas pains

It’s been a roller coaster ride of gasoline prices throughout 2022, with one thing in common — Bradford’s prices are usually higher than elsewhere in the area and higher than the state average. Prices peaked in June at an average of more than $5 per gallon, and didn’t come below $3 per gallon, as analysts predicted, by Christmas.

Pennsylvania’s gas tax of 58 cents a gallon is one factor to consider when looking at the high cost of gasoline, and so is the Russian war in the Ukraine.

9. Broadband

After the pandemic, the federal government determined that broadband internet was a necessity and went about allocating funding to projects to make it happen. The Federal Communications Commission released updated broadband maps in November, and county governments are urging residents to make sure their addresses are on the maps. The maps determine how billions in funds will be allocated, so officials are reminding residents that this is for all the marbles, so to speak.

10. Veterans Square project

Not only was Veterans Square redone and turned into the centerpiece a town square should be, but the gazebo was replaced and the monuments cleaned. It was dedicated on Veterans Day, a fitting tribute to the men and women who served our country.

Bookworm Picks for the Best of 2022

It happens every year. The decorations come down. The last of the Christmas leftovers have been eaten. Errant bits of ripped wrapping are found and discarded. You have no more holiday candy or cookies, you look around at your empty hands, and you wonder now what?

Now it’s time to settle in and read for the rest of the winter season. For your pleasure, here are the Top Five Bookworm Picks for the Best of 2022...

FICTION

Lovers of fairy tales are in for a big surprise with “The Book Eaters” by Sunyi Dean (Tor, $26.99). It’s a dark, dark legend filled with evil dragons that look like men, princesses that are worse than second-class citizens within their realms, and a chase that will chill you. Book lovers will adore this tale, especially if you don’t necessarily need a happily-ever-after.

Pick up a copy of “Dot and Ralphie” by Amy Hoffman (University of Wisconsin Press, $16.95) and it doesn’t look like much. But aren’t you glad you don’t judge a book by its cover? This is a sweet tale of two elderly women, partners in life and love, and aging. It’s sweet and grumpy and charming, somewhat like a lesbian Honeymooners episode, only better.

Readers who are familiar with the thrillers that James Lee Burke writes will absolutely be stunned by “Every Cloak Rolled in Blood” (Simon & Schuster, $27.00) because in this book, the thrill is secondary to the main plot. Here, retired detective Aaron Broussard has lost his beloved daughter and it’s cut him to the core. Fiery, glass-sharp grief doesn’t stop crime, though, and so he still has crime to solve – whether real, or imagined. Read this book with an open heart and tissues at hand. It may be Burke’s best.

Lovers of clever, clever stories will love “Sign Here” by Claudia Lux (Berkeley, $27.00). It’s the tale of Peyote Trip, whose job on the Fifth Floor of Hell is to recruit new souls for eternity. But Pey has a plan to get out of his purgatory, which turns this funny, sharp-witted story into a shady mystery that will make you laugh a lot and squirm even more.

Here’s a book that’s absolutely not for everyone: “Manhunt” by Gretchen Felker-Martin (Macmillan Nightfire, $17.99) is a lesbian feminist dystopian thriller, which sounds like a lot and it is. A virus has hit every corner of the world, making men into wolf-like killing machines and sending the women into hiding. When two young women – one of them, trans – learns that a “healer” might be able to save her from the inevitable, they head out to find the woman but

a makeshift band of warrior women get in their way. Again, this isn’t a book for everyone but if you’re looking for something very, very different, this is it.

BONUS BOOK: “Things Past Telling” by Sheila Williams (Amistad, $25.99) is a novel of the memories of a 112-year-old former slave, who was also a pirate’s woman, a healer, and someone reaching for things her soul needed. It’s an adventurous book with the tiniest touch of fantasy and you shouldn’t miss it.

NON-FICTION

You have questions. And “All the Living and the Dead” by Hayley Campbell (St. Martin’s Press, $29.99) has answers. When someone dies, what happens next? A wide variety of things, that’s what, and it’s someone else’s job to see that it’s done right. This book is careful not to be (too) gruesome but it is compellingly fascinating.

“Charlie’s Good Tonight” by Paul Sexton (Harper, $27.99) is on this list because it could be the biggest surprise of the year for readers. It’s the story of the late Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, a man who really never wanted fame and often actively shunned the limelight. If you think you know all about the debauchery of your favorite rock & roll band, think again and be totally

charmed by one man’s life. There are two business books on this list because they don’t at all read like business books; in fact, “Think Like a Horse” by Grant Golliher (Putnam, $28.00) and “Meet Me by the Fountain” by Alexandra Lange (Bloomsbury, $28.00) both seem more like snuggle-up-in-front-of-the-fire kinds of books. Golliher’s book is pure cowboy – he was a rancher and worked extensively with horses – and there are western-novel tones in his book on getting the most out of people. Lange’s book is a trip to the mall throughout history, including a good look at stores you may have visited through the years. These books are both great for the business-minded reader, but could be enjoyed by anyone.

AND FINALLY, AN OBSESSION: “To Walk About in Freedom” by Carole Emberton (W.W. Norton, $28.95) is a jaw-dropping memoir that hides in a history book. In the earlier part of the last century, the government paid writers to interview people for a WPA project. One of the interviewees was a former slave woman who offers up not only her life, but a real-life account of the end of slavery and how it impacted everyday, average people. This is a book you’ll be talking about well into the new year.

If these eleven books don’t fit your mood, then be sure to check with your favorite bookseller or librarian. When it comes to books, (s)he is a superhero.

2022 YEAR IN REVIEW – JANUARY 11, 2023 THE BRADFORD (PA.) ERA 10
Happy Reading!

JANUARY

It’s GOLDEN GLOBES time. But is a Globes with no telecast, boozy celebs or red carpet a Globes at all? The embattled Hollywood Foreign Press Association, reeling from stunning failures over diversity, holds a private event and plans a comeback next year. Hey, remember the original wardrobe malfunction? Well, JANET JACKSON says she and JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE have moved on, and so should we. The New York Times buys Wordle, and we’re all thinking in five-letter words (though W-O-R-DL-E is six, just saying.) Meanwhile, it’s a month of loss, heading off a year of loss: pioneering Black actor, director and activist SIDNEY POITIER dies at 94.

FEBRUARY

What would a year in pop culture be without BRITNEY? Just months after her liberation from her restrictive conservatorship, Spears is reported to have signed a mammoth book deal, but at year’s end we’re still waiting for news. RIHANNA is pregnant!

TOM BRADY retires! (Stay tuned, on that one.) TAYLOR watch: JAKE GYLLENHAAL speaks out, saying he really has nothing to do with that song.

MARCH

Quick, who wins Oscars this month? Well, “CODA” does, a feelgood drama with a largely deaf cast, and TROY KOTSUR becomes the first deaf actor to win an acting Oscar. Alas, all anyone can talk about is — you know. SMITH, who wins the best actor award not long after slapping Rock over a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, won’t truly address the issue until the end of the year, so keep reading. KARDASHIAN watch: Kim K is declared legally single again in her ongoing divorce with YE, the rapper formerly known as KANYE WEST. And BRADY, retired for 40 days, says, “Never mind!”

APRIL

It’s GRAMMY time, and JON BATISTE wins big, taking five statuettes. The musician’s huge year will later include performing at the first state dinner of the Biden administration, for French President Emmanuel Macron. The next day Macron will meet with MUSK (thanks for the segue, Monsieur le President) who begins his acquisition of TWITTER this month, leading to untold — and still unfolding — changes at the social media giant.

MAY

So imagine you’re sipping cocktails at the MET GALA and a musician comes sauntering through, playing the melodica — of course it’s BATISTE, because the Met Gala’s that kind of crazy party. The biggest splash of the night, though, is KARDASHIAN, on the arm of boyfriend PETE DAVIDSON, wearing the same sequined, skin tight gown MARILYN MONROE wore to sing “Happy Birthday” to JFK in 1962. In movies, “Top Gun: Maverick” opens, the highest-grossing domestic debut in CRUISE’S career, and his first to surpass $100 million on opening weekend. HARRY STYLES fans rejoice! His album, “Harry’s House,” is here.

JUNE

Stunning news for the global fanbase of BTS as the K-pop supergroup announces it’s taking a break to focus on members’ solo projects. On the legal front, a Virginia jury hands DEPP a victory in his very messy libel case over allegations of domestic abuse, finding that former wife HEARD defamed him in a 2018 op-ed. On a happier note, Britney gets married….

JULY

Only one wedding, Britney? BENNIFER has two! Maybe what happens in Vegas usually stays in Vegas, but not when you have 227 million followers on Instagram. With a winking reference to being a “Sadie” (married lady) JENNIFER LOPEZ directs fans to her newsletter where she shares

pics of her quickie wedding to BEN AFFLECK. “Love is beautiful,” she writes. “And it turns out love is patient.” Speaking of patience, fans of BEYONCÉ are rewarded for theirs with the release of her long-awaited “Renaissance,” her first solo album in six years.

AUGUST

So, we were saying ... Bennifer’s second wedding, on Affleck’s compound in Georgia, is bigger and fancier. One wedding, one split: KARDASHIAN and DAVIDSON are no longer. In other summer news, the world remembers PRINCESS DIANA, whose shocking death happened 25 years ago, and whose life is being rehashed for a new generation in the current season of “The Crown.” Only days after the anniversary, that same Netflix series will pause production as a mark of respect for QUEEN ELIZABETH II as Britain — and the world — mourn the beloved monarch, who dies at age 96 after more than 70 years on the throne.

SEPTEMBER

Mounting political intrigue in Europe, and by that we mean, did spit fly at the Venice premiere of “Don’t Worry Darling”? Either way the movie, directed by OLIVIA WILDE and starring her boyfriend (alleged spitter STYLES), is saddled – or blessed? –with more than its share of extracurricular drama. At the EMMYS, behold SHERYL LEE RALPH, who wins for “Abbott Elementary” and schools the crowd on the power of dreams and self-belief. “This is what believing looks like,” she says. You know what else believing looks like? Rachel Berry from “Glee” – aka LEA MICHELE –at last getting to play Fanny Brice in “Funny Girl” on Broadway. In sports, with four rueful words that resonate with working moms everywhere, SERENA WILLIAMS says she’s stepping aside from tennis, because “something’s got to give.”

OCTOBER

The second HARVEY WEINSTEIN trial opens in Los Angeles. ADIDAS

drops YE, part of a cascade of companies that will sever ties with the rapper over his antisemitic and other troubling comments. The MUSK era begins at TWITTER as the world’s richest man carries a sink into the office, to “let that sink in.” HEIDI KLUM’s Halloween costume is a slimy, glistening rain worm. But before the month worms away from us, let’s cede it to SWIFT for dropping her new album, “Midnights” (Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day), then adding seven bonus tracks, then becoming the first artist to occupy all top 10 slots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Let THAT sink in! P.S. Celebrity divorce watch: BRADY and )GISELE BUNDCHEN split.

NOVEMBER

Did we say LAST month was Taylor Swift month? Well now, millions of eager fans crowd a presale for her much-awaited Eras Tour, resulting in crashes and endless waits. Ticketmaster cancels the general sale, citing insufficient stock. Multiple state attorneys general announce investigations. Takeaway: People want Taylor Swift tickets. At the multiplex, they also want their Wakanda. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” meets the double challenge of following up one of the biggest blockbusters in history and losing its biggest star.

DECEMBER

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, here come HARRY and MEGHAN again, with a Netflix documentary watched very closely by royalty across the pond. Over at Twitter, MUSK says he’ll step down as CEO — after polling users — once he finds someone “foolish” enough to replace him. Cameron’s “AVATAR” sequel finally appears, 13 years after the original broke records, and yes, moviegoers flock to Pandora once again. And bringing the year full circle, SMITH emerges to promote his new film, “EMANCIPATION,” hoping people will forget about … what was it? … at least enough to check out the movie.

In this year of comebacks, will Smith’s be the biggest?

Check back with us in 2023.
