Salamanca schools, Brigaid partner for selfoperating food service department SALAMANCA — The Salamanca City Central School District and Brigaid have begun a year-long partnership to support the district’s goals of transitioning to a self-operating food service program and improving the quality and ingredients of school meals for all Salamanca students. The district is currently hiring a food service manager and will be hiring additional staff at a later date. Brigaid, a start-up food service corporation whose chefs provide hands-on training and practical solutions to institutional food service operations, will assist in training the newly hired food service manager Brigaid will then support the new food service

manager in building a selfoperated, healthy school food program, which would launch on the first day of the 2021-22 school year in all three Salamanca school kitchens. The public school district serves 1,400 students in Salamanca and surrounding communities. Located on the Seneca Nation’s Allegany Territory, about 36% of the district’s student population is Native American. Brigaid and the chef director will also work with local Nation members to adapt indigenous recipes and foods to fit the NSLP guidelines, then feature these foods throughout the year on school menus. Since the inception of the Healthy Hungry Free

Act, students and staff have identified food selection, quality and variety as primary concerns of our food service program. More recently, students have specifically asked traditional indigenous foods be a regular part of the menu. Superintendent Robert Breidenstein said the district will be able to expand menu options and have an expanded menu by partnering with Brigaid. Founded in 2016 by former Noma head chef Dan Giusti, Brigaid began challenging the school food status quo by putting professional chefs into public schools to cook fresh, wholesome food from scratch. In 2016, the company launched its first

pilot program with the New London Public School district in New London, Connecticut. Since then, Brigaid has partnered with several more East Coast school districts and expanded its reach into institutional kitchens of all kinds, still with the same approach of using hands-on, chef-led training to improve the taste and quality of institutional meals through scratch cooking. “Our mission has typically been to help existing school food service programs around the country provide high quality meals for their students,” said Dan Giusti, founder and CEO of Brigaid. “The exciting part of this partnership with

BY KELLEN M. QUIGLEY RANDOLPH — Lori DeCarlo will retire from the Randolph Academy Union Free School District after 36 years, including 15 in the role of superintendent, at the end of this school year. Since 2006, DeCarlo has led the 200-student, twocampus district. During her tenure, Randolph Academy has assisted thousands of students from across the state, providing counseling, behavior management, a Regents diploma curriculum and vocational training. Randolph Academy was established as a Special Act Public School District by the New York State Legislature in 1985 — the same year DeCarlo joined as a teacher. She steadily became more involved in administrative work, and was eventually chosen to lead the district 20 years later. DeCarlo said the schools have since been positioned as New York’s foremost program in restorative justice. Its sociological model focuses on building and strengthening relationships and community, regularly engaging students and educators in structured, open communication as part of the daily classroom routine. “I’ve always believed there were better ways of responding to students’ problem behaviors,” she said. “The potentially devastating effects of even one out-of-school suspension, coupled with the school-toprison pipeline that threatens many at-risk students, led me to research more proactive, positive responses to student behaviors and conflicts.” DeCarlo dove deep into this approach, researching and developing the concept to its current form and culture. She convinced

her board of education of its merits, then led her faculty and staff through a years-long transition to a Restorative Practice system in 2015, a process that requires a true paradigm shift across an entire organization. Since 2018, DeCarlo has been the lead trainer for the New York State Education Department’s Restorative Justice training initiatives. She also co-chairs Western New York’s Youth Justice Team and has presented at dozens of conferences, including those of the National School Boards Association, New York State School Boards Association and New York State Council of School Superintendents. DeCarlo has encouraged her staff to share their expertise with anyone interested in adding restorative practices to their classrooms. Together, they’ve designed workshops and learning labs that have drawn dozens of state educators to their two campuses. They also travel to other Western New York districts to help them learn and implement restorative practices into their cultures. “Lori DeCarlo’s influence is evident in every corner of Randolph Academy,” said Brad Sande, school board vice president. “Our modern school buildings, classrooms, technology and recreation facilities; our students’ outstanding performance on state tests and Regents’ exams; the success of Restorative Justice and our stable fiscal condition are all the result of her leadership and vision for the potential of the Academy’s students and staff.” DeCarlo was a driving force in the district’s expansion, acquiring the former Hopevale UFSD in Hamburg in 2011 to increase Randolph Academy’s

Photo submitted Lori DeCarlo, superintendent of Randolph Academy, will retire this June after 36 years with the school district, 15 of which were as superintendent.

reach. She has also instilled a strong academic program which generates Regents exam scores that consistently exceed the state’s averages for students with disabilities. Perhaps most importantly, she has steadily emphasized the importance of Randolph Academy students maintaining a visible presence in the community, so that neighbors and key influencers never saw them as dangerous or “bad kids.” Volunteer partnerships with organizations like the SPCA, Oishei Children’s Hospital, community centers and nursing homes have allowed students to put their vocational skills to great use in a servicelearning capacity — and improve people’s lives in the process. “Lori’s impact was most recently summed up eloquently by a parent of a

former student,” Mary Myers, board president, said. “Upon learning of her pending retirement, she said, ‘You have been there for so long — and always put our kids first.’ That sums up Lori’s character and approach perfectly, and we wish her decades of health and enjoyment in her wellearned retirement.” An alumna of Buffalo State College, DeCarlo is a past president of the Western New York Educational Service Council and the New York Council of Administrators of Special Education. She has also been named a U.S. Department of State Fulbright Specialist. Following her retirement, DeCarlo will continue her work by joining the staff of the University of San Diego’s Center for Restorative Justice. She’s also looking forward to

spending time traveling with her husband, Joe, and spending time with family and friends. “It’s been a privilege to have a career which allows me to carry out my passion — to support, empower and educate our students, allowing them to discover their personal greatness and succeed,” DeCarlo said. “While I look forward to this new phase with excitement, serving Randolph Academy has been my highest professional honor. Its mission, my colleagues and our precious students will remain in my heart, always.” The Board of Education is currently reviewing applications and expects to appoint a new superintendent on or about June 1. The new individual will assume his or her duties on or about July 1.

Seneca powwow canceled for 2021; to resume in ‘22 BY KELLEN M. QUIGLEY SALAMANCA — As concerns about the coronavirus pandemic continue, organizers of the annual Marvin “Joe” Curry Veterans Powwow have decided to cancel the event for 2021 out of an abundance of caution. The Seneca Nation presented the annual celebration of Native American culture for 30 years before the onset of the global pandemic forced the cancelation of last year’s event. “We had been hopeful to invite our family and friends from across Indian Country back to the Allegany Territory this year, but we feel that it is in everyone’s best interests to instead focus on 2022,” said Seneca Nation Councilor Tina Abrams, co-chair of the powwow committee. The powwow, which features a series of exhilarating dance and drum competitions, attracts competitors and visitors from across the United States and Canada. It is one of the largest powwow celebrations in the northeast. The powwow honors Native American veterans and is named in honor of Marvin “Joe” Curry, a member of the Seneca Nation of Indians’ Snipe Clan, who led a long and distinguished career

of military service in the United States Navy, serving two tours of duty in the Korean War and also serving in the Vietnam War. In all, Curry served on eight warships, including the USS Little Rock, during his military career. After completing his military service as a chief warrant officer in the 1970s, Curry served as ship superintendent of the Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park for several years before retiring in 1997. Curry was a strong advocate of veterans’ causes who served the United States and the Seneca Nation of Indians with pride and valor throughout his life. He passed away in 2010. Abrams said the powwow committee was especially hopeful to bring the celebration back after the widespread pain of 2020. Native American communities have been among the most impacted by the coronavirus. Federal statistics show that the COVID-related death rate among American Indian and Alaska Native people is nearly twice that of whites. Three women from the same Seneca family in the Salamanca area died within three weeks of each other in May and June 2020, the earliest of many Native deaths in Cattaraugus County due to COVID-19.

The powwow often features various contests and competitions throughout the weekend for Native dancers and musicians. Attendees enjoy a cultural tent, where they can make authentic crafts and learn about Seneca and Native culture, and vendors selling a variety of Native crafts, artwork and food are set up. This year’s powwow would have been the first held at the newly renovated Veterans Memorial Park, the traditional site of the event for decades. The $16 million project included replacing the natural field with turf. An agreement with the Salamanca City Central School District, who is subleasing the park from

the city of Salamanca who in turn leases the property from the Nation, would have allowed the powwow to continue being held there again. Now, the committee will soon begin plans for the powwow’s joyous return in 2022. “The powwow is about community and coming together,” Abrams said. “For Native communities, the dancing, the drums, the songs and the culture bind us together. Being able to celebrate with one another and with our neighbors in the local community is especially meaningful. We’re looking forward to a long-awaited reunion and celebration next year.”

Burrell named to Conference of Mayors Executive Committee Photo by Rick Miller Gail Grillo of Ellicottville rakes around the Carolyn Lowe Herb Garden at Nannen Arboretum on the annual volunteer clean-up day May 3. Her Labordoodle Magic was supervising.

Nannen Arboretum volunteers show up for annual cleanup BY RICK MILLER

BY RICK MILLER Ellicottville Mayor John A. Burrell has been named to the Executive Committee of the New York State Conference of Mayors and Municipal Officers. Burrell was appointed by Binghamton Mayor Richard David, president of the Conference of Mayors and Municipal Officials. “Mayor Burrell is a proven leader with a wide range of experience and success at the village and town levels of government,” David said. “John’s collaborative approach to leadership and active advocacy on behalf of local governments will be a tremendous asset to NYCOM as we represent our city and village members.” Burrell said, “NYCOM plays a very important role as the legislative advocate for cities and villages, and provides extensive professional training for elected

and appointed officials. The organization works diligently on our behalf and conscientiously seeks input from its members about the most pressing issues we face. I am honored to be appointed to this position of leadership in NYCON.” Burrell has served 11 years as village mayor and budget officer, four years as deputy mayor and two years as a trustee. He served as town supervisor from 2008 to 2016. He is a past president of the Cattaraugus County Municipal Officials Association and was active in the Cattaraugus County Town Supervisors Association. He has been a member of the Ellicottville Fire Company for 55 years and its EMS Squad for 45 years.; Currently he is secretary/treasurer of the Ellicottville.Great Valley Ambulance Service.

ELLICOTTVILLE — Nannen Arboretum Society volunteers got a lot of work done at the annual spring cleanup May 3. About 15 volunteers weeded, raked leaves, picked up branches and twigs, removed deer fencing and other spring chores at the arboretum behind the Ellicottville Town Center, said president Pat Kerl. A side benefit to volunteers working outside were the many varieties of flowering trees. Winter weather brought down a good number of branches and twigs which several people including Keith McKale picked up and put them in piles for pickup with a wagon. Other volunteers included Gail Grillo, who raked around the Carolyn Lowe Herb Garden on the path to Lake Nipponica. She said she was being supervised by her 11-year-old black Labordoodle Magic who has a knack for catching Frizbees, which he did. M.J. Brown and Sue Parsons were weeding and raking outside the front entrance to the Ellicottville Town Center. Gretchen Plough pitched in with the weeding and Diane Smith was raking leaves in the front of the building. Nan Miller and Karen Chapman raked soil around the Eastern redbud tree the Nannen Arboretum Society

planted for Arbor Day on April 30. “Students from BOCES spent several days backfilling and seeding along the new asphalt walkway through the arboretum,” said Kerl. New volunteers are welcome anytime, she said. The society meets at 9 a.m. each Monday to pick away at a list of chores for that week. Visitors to the arboretum at 28 Parkside Drive in Ellicottville will find new signs at the entrance and tributes to both John Ploetz,

who developed plans for the arboretum back in 1974, and Paul Kingston, for whom the Kingston Nature Trail. Ploetz was a part-time Cornell Cooperative Extension horticultural aide when he drew up plans for the arboretum in 1974. Ploetz sought grants to pay for it and picked most of the trees now at the arboretum, which was named for William Nannen, a local businessman and conservationist who donated the eight-acre property for the Cooperative Extension Center in 1958.

The Nannen Arboretum Society was formed as a notfor-profit group to maintain the arboretum after the town of Ellicottville purchased the center in 2013. The arboretum is the scene of many weddings, receptions and other gatherings during the summer and fall months. This coming winter, there are plans by Night Lights to light up parts of the trail and some of the trees with colorful LED lights in a bid to get people to get another perspective of the arboretum.

Commons symptoms of engine control module problems

The notion of vehicle maintenance often conjures images of greased-stained hands and car hoods propped up. While professional and amateur mechanics are still no strangers to getting their hands dirty, vehicle maintenance in the 21st century also involves diagnosing issues that might arise with a car’s engine control module. What is an engine control module?

An engine control module, or ECM, serves as the primary computer system for many critical components in modern vehicles. ECMs essentially serve as the brains behind the engines, controlling everything from fuel mixtures to emissions controls. Sensors within the engine send signals to the ECM, and the ECM then uses that information to help the car run smoothly. Issues that arise with the ECM can make driving difficult and, in some cases, impossible. What are some potential signs of ECM issues? The automotive service provider Aamco notes that a faulty or failing ECM will exhibit various symptoms. However, it’s important to note that these symptoms are not always indicative of issues with the ECM, so when they arise drivers may want to schedule appointments with their mechanics so the true culprit can be identified and the problem can be fixed. · Check engine light comes on: Many drivers have experienced the dreaded check engine light, which indicates some type of issue with the engine. That issue can be a failing engine component, or it may indicate a failing or bad ECM. A mechanic can determine why the light has come on. · Engine performance issues: Even though the ECM is a separate entity from the engine itself, a bad or failing ECM can affect engine performance. That’s because such ECMs throw off the timing and fuel settings of the engine, leading to a sudden and noticeable reduction in engine performance. Engine power may be affected, and the vehicle may experience a drop in fuel efficiency and issues with acceleration. · Vehicle will not start: A failed ECM means the vehicle won’t start, as there’s nothing controlling the engine to tell it do so. Failing ECMs may lead to struggles starting the vehicle, and whenever drivers experience these issues, they should consult their mechanics immediately so the issue does not escalate to the point where the engine won’t start at all. · Erratic engine behavior: A malfunctioning ECM can lead to

stalling or misfiring. These issues are often sporadic, which may give drivers the impression that nothing is seriously wrong. However, erratic engine behavior is a strong indicator of problems with the ECM, and these issues should be addressed immediately. Identifying ECM issues and promptly addressing them can help drivers keep their vehicles on the road.
