Great Valley highway worker retiring after more than 34 years GREAT VALLEY — Great Valley town employees celebrated the retirement of a long-time Highway Department employee on Thursday. Rich Fluent of Salamanca, who has worked for the Highway Department for 34½ years, officially retires at the end of the month. With accumulated time off, his last day on the job was actually March 9. “It’s been a nice ride,” Fluent said with a wry smile as what he called his “second

Griffis Sculpture Park to welcome new sculptures of inspirational women ELLICOTTVILLE — One of the Griffis Sculpture Park’s newest sculptures will be calling Ellicottville its home for the next month. A life-like 10-foot-tall bronze sculpture of author Cheryl Strayed will be temporarily located in front of the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce building at 9 West Washington St. before being permanently installed at the sculpture park in late June. The public is invited to attend a welcoming event in front of the sculpture at 5 p.m. Friday, June 4. Live jazz music and refreshments will be served. “With a majority of our downtown businesses being women owned or coowned, this is a fitting tribute,” said Brian McFadden, executive director of the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce. The Griffis Sculpture Park recently received four bronze statues of inspirational women created by Australian collaborative artists Gillie and Marc Schattner. The bronze

sculptures of Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas, astronaut Tracy Dyson, actress/producer Janet Mock and Cheryl Strayed were donated to the Ashford Hollow Foundation by the artists. The Strayed sculpture was selected to appear in Ellicottville, as she is the author of the Oscar-nominated movie “Wild,” starring Reese Witherspoon. The movie was based on Strayed’s life and how she escaped personal demons by hiking 1,100 miles of the Pacific Coast trail. She has currently authored four books and hosts a successful podcast.

Gillie and Marc have been called “the most successful and prolific creators of public art in New York’s History” by the New York Times. Creating some of the world’s most innovative public sculptures, Gillie and Marc have re-defined what public art should be, spreading messages of love, equality and conservation around the world. Their highly coveted sculptures and paintings can be seen in art galleries and public sites in over 250 cities. The unifying mission of the artwork is to fill the world with inspiring public art that spreads messages of love, equality, conservation and hope.

Thomas Sibley, 22, of Kill Buck, was sentenced by Cattaraugus County Court Judge Ronald Ploetz. Both charges are class E felonies, District Attorney Lori P. Rieman said. The incident occurred on Oct. 28, 2019, in the town of Great Valley when the defendant knowingly had in his possession or control, knowingly accessed the internet to view a performance which included sexual conduct by a child less than 16 years old, Rieman said. Sibley also, with intent to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, attempted to threaten to commit or cause to be committed a specific offense with a direct threat towards a school, the district attorney said. Also Monday, Wesley E. Schwab, 32, of Salamanca, was sentenced to two year’s probation, an ignition interlock for six months and a mandatory state surcharge for his conviction to misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor. The incident occurred on July 4 in the town of Mansfield when the defendant operated a motor vehicle upon a public roadway

family” celebrated his retirement with sandwiches and refreshments in the highway garage and town offices. What did he like about the job he started in 1987? “I liked being outdoors,” Fluent replied. “There’s something different every day.” Fluent missed the sweeping of roads in the spring and will miss the upcoming tarring and chipping of town roads. He plowed Bear Hollow Road with the 2018 International truck with an automatic transmission

and an air-ride seat he’s been driving for the past two years. Highway Superintendent Jack Harrington congratulated Fluent on his retirement. Harrington was the fourth superintendent he’s worked under. The others were Roy Phillips, Tom Dineen and Jim Brennan. Highway Department employees Nate Dunkleman, Chad Smith and Randy Peplinski were also on hand to celebrate with Fluent as was Supervisor Dan Brown.

while in an intoxicated condition and did knowingly act in a manner likely to be injurious to the physical, mental or moral welfare of a child less than 17 years old. An Olean man, Sammy L. McDaniel, 44, was sentenced to three years’ probation for his conviction of attempted aggravated harassment of an employee by an inmate, a class A misdemeanor. The incident occurred on April 18, 2020, in the city of Salamanca, when the defendant attempted to, with intent to harass, annoy, threaten or alarm a person in a facility who he knows to be an employee of such facility or a police officer and caused such officer to come in contact with urine, the district attorney said. Marshall D. Jacobs, 35, of Steamburg, was sentenced

to three years’ probation to run concurrently with his conviction of third-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, a class A misdemeanor; third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, a misdemeanor and uninsured motor vehicle, a violation. The incident occurred on Jan. 2 in the town of Carrollton, when the defendant with knowledge that an instrument was forged and with intent to defraud, deceive or injure another, possessed a forged instrument. Further, he operated a motor vehicle on a public roadway when he knew or had reason to know that his privilege of operating a motor vehicle in the state of New York was revoked and operated a motor vehicle that was not properly insured.

Children’s vision challenges are particularly hard to detect because the child may not know they are seeing the world differently than other children, which underscores the importance of parents taking the initiative to ensure their children get proper eye examinations. Summer vacation time is a great time to take children in for eye exams. Schedule one today.

AUTO CORNER Charge up your car battery knowledge

Vehicles consist of many essential components to keep them running efficiently and effectively. Car and truck owners should have an understanding of how their vehicles function so they can diagnose and address problems as they arise. Car batteries are an important component of any vehicle. Even though engines are the powerhouse of any car or truck, without a battery, the engine wouldn’t be able to work. According to Firestone Complete Auto Care, car batteries work by pro-

viding a jolt of electricity necessary to power all the electrical components of the vehicle. This is achieved through a chemical reaction that changes chemical energy into the electrical energy needed to deliver voltage to the starter. In addition to initially starting the car, the battery also keeps electric current steady to keep the engine running. The battery also works in conjunction with the alternator to power the electronics in the car, according to the automotive information blog Autosessive. While the car is running, the alternator reverses the current produced by the battery, recharging it as a result. This happens during long journeys, so people who drive for short bursts of time may find that their batteries will not have a chance to recharge and may not have the longevity desired. There is quite literally a lot riding on a functioning battery. No one wants to be caught stranded by a dead battery, so drivers may wonder if there are any indicators that may signal the battery needs replacement. · Slow turnover: If a vehicle does not immediately start or if the cranking is sluggish and takes longer to start, it may mean the battery is starting to fail. · Frequent, short trips: Drivers who make frequent, short trips may find their car batteries do not have time to fully recharge. This, coupled with overtaxing thanks to a lot of accessory use, may cause the battery and the alternator to have shortened life spans. · Low battery fluid levels: If the fluid level is below the energy conductor inside, it is often indicative of overcharging and excessive heat. · Corrosion: Corrosion buildup, dust, dirt, and grime on battery connections may cause performance problems. Inspecting and cleaning the terminals can prolong the battery life. · Odors and leaks: Battery leaks can produce a sulfur odor similar to the smell of a rotten egg. This can become problematic over time, and leaks may indicate an aging or damaged battery.

· Age: Most batteries have a finite life span. A well-maintained battery can last up to five years. Neglect can reduce that life expectancy considerably. · Bloated or cracked battery case: Replace the battery immediately if the case is cracking, as it could be because excessive heat is swelling the battery. Understanding how car batteries work can help drivers keep their cars running smoothly.
