42 North to host HillTap fest at Holiday Valley

Seneca Gaming announces board appointments Seneca Gaming Corporation recently announced its selection of officers for the company’s board of directors. Dr. Lori V. Quigley, a graduate of St. Bonaventure University, was re-elected chair of the board. She has completed Commissioner Certification Training through the National Indian Gaming Association. In addition to her role with the Seneca Gaming, Quigley serves on the Board of Directors for the National Indian Education Association and the board of the YWCA of Western New York. A longtime higher education professional, Quigley provides professional training seminars on social justice, critical race theory from a Native American lens and multi-generational trauma resulting from the Native American residential school era. Terry L. Nephew, serving her second three-year term on the Seneca Gaming board, was elected vice chairwoman. Nephew has worked in the gaming industry for over 10 years, including as Assistant Director with the Seneca

Nation’s Class II gaming operations and as an Inspector with the Seneca Gaming Authority. She has completed Commissioner Certification Training as well as Master Class Training through the National Indian Gaming Association. A member of the Turtle Clan, Nephew resides on the Seneca Nation’s Cattaraugus Territory. John Y. Waterman, Jr., was elected Treasurer. He served as chairman of the Seneca Gaming Authority from 2017-18 and previously worked within the casino regulatory operation from 2002-07. A graduate of St. Bonaventure University, Waterman has a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with a concentration in Finance, and a Master of Professional Leadership (MPL). He resides with his family on the Seneca Nation’s Cattaraugus Territory. Geneva A. Locke, elected Corporate Secretary, is serving her first term on the Seneca Gaming board. With over 10 years of gaming and marketing experience, Locke has previously worked with both the Seneca Nation’s

Class II Gaming operations and Seneca Gaming Corporation, cultivating numerous business relationships within the gaming industry. She has completed Commissioner Certification Training through the National Indian Gaming Association and serves on the Patron Governance Board for the Iroquois Nationals Development Group. An active leader and champion of various causes in her community, Locke resides on the Seneca Nation’s Cattaraugus Territory with her family and is a member of the Wolf Clan. “We want to congratulate our new Board officers on being selected by their colleagues for their leadership positions, and thank all of our Board members for their dedication and service,” said Kevin Nephew, Seneca Gaming Corporation President and CEO. “The leadership and support of our Board members has been especially impactful as we continue to successfully navigate the challenges presented by the global pandemic. We look forward to their continued partnership.”

ELLICOTTVILLE — 42 North Brewing Company is hosting the inaugural HillTap Festival at Holiday Valley on Saturday, July 24. 42 North Brewery founder. “The opportunity to host an event at the top of the mountain is truly unique. We could not think of a better spot to merge craft beer, roots music and adventure.” The music line-up for HillTap features Buffalo-based roots band Folk Faces. Folk Faces will be wrapping up its Minivan Cowboy Summer Tour with its appearance.. Opening up for the Folk Faces will be Big J Blues. Big J Blues will perform at 1 pm and the Folk Faces take the stage at 2:30. “It’s great to partner with 42 North on this event,” said Niki Klein, Resort Services

AUTO CORNER Safety tips for novice motorcycle riders

Riding a motorcycle can be an awe-inspiring experience much different from riding inside a car or truck. According to the motorcycle information resource Biker Report, 1.5 million Americans owned a motorcycle in 2018. Even though motorcycle accidents have declined in recent years, a recent report by the Governors Highway Safety Association, a nonprofit organization representing state highway safety offices, indicates that, when adjusting for miles traveled, motorcycle fatalities occur 28 times more fre-

quently than fatalities involving passenger vehicles. Alcohol and drug impairment, distraction and an aging motorcycle population have contributed to the elevated accident risk among motorcycle riders. However, inexperience also plays a role. By adhering to certain safety measures, novice riders can avoid various risks and stay safe as they get more acclimated to their motorcycles. · Get your license. It is essential to ride with a license. In the United States, riders are required to have a motorcycle license or endorsement in addition to a driver’s license to legally ride a motorcycle. Depending on where riders live, a motorcycle safety course may be a prerequisite to getting a license and can help riders improve their skills on a motorcycle. · Enroll in a safety course. A safety course can teach riders various strategies, including emergency evasive maneuvers. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers courses for riders, who can check to see if any such courses are available in their areas. · Wear a helmet. Many states require motorcycle operators and riders to wear helmets when bikes are in operation. Helmets are required by law in Canada across all provinces and territories. The U.S. Department of Transportation also recommends a full-face helmet as an added safety option for novice motorcycle riders. Biker Report states that a helmet can reduce risks of brain injuries from a motorcycle accident by up to 67 percent. · Wear protective clothing. In addition to helmets, jackets and other protective gear can reduce the risk of injury for riders involved in crashes. A 2011 study published in the journal Accident Analysis and Prevention determined there was a significantly reduced risk of injury to the upper body when riders wore fitted body armor. · Practice in a closed environment. It is essential that motorcycle riders grow accustomed to riding the bike they will be taking out on the road. Doing so in a parking lot or a closed course enables riders to get a better feel for the throttle grip and brakes and steering. Riders can gradually increase their time on the mo-

torcycle and skip long distance trips until they feel comfortable on their bikes. In addition to these tips, novice riders are urged to be as visible as possible while on the road. Bright or reflective items can make motorcycle riders stand out. With these safety measures in place, novice motorcycle riders can reduce their risk for accidents and injuries while on the road.
