3 area high school grads receive new CRCF scholarships Three high school graduates from Cattaraugus County recently received scholarship awards being made for the first time from newly established scholarship funds, managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community. Gabriel Snyder, of Ellicottville Central School, and West Valley Academy and Central School’s Chloe Chai received the Elisa B. Hughey Memorial Scholarship for the Arts for $1,000 each. This scholarship was established in 2016 by the friends and family of Elisa B. Hughey, a deep lover of the arts and education, after she lost a long battle with cancer. In 2019, the Hughey Scholarship Committee moved the fund under the management of CRCF. This fund provides two annual scholarships, one each for Ellicottville and West Valley Central high schools, for college-bound students committed to advancing their skills in any

aspect of the fine arts including sculpture, painting, drawing, watercolor, graphics, animation, architecture/design and photography. Snyder will study Theatre at Sarah Lawrence College. Chai will attend Denison University to study studio art. Snyder also received the inaugural Ginger D. Schroder Legislative District 3 Scholarship for $500. Ginger D. Schroder, of Farmersville, established this scholarship through her legislative salary after being elected to the Cattaraugus County Legislature. The Ginger D. Schroder Legislative District 3 Scholarship is given to a graduating high school student residing in Cattaraugus County Legislative District 3, which covers the towns of Ellicottville, Farmersville, Franklinville, Lyndon, Machias and Mansfield, who will pursue a trade degree or 2- or 4-year college

degree. Madison Braker, of Salamanca Central School, received the first-ever Nelson M. Beard Memorial Scholarship for $1,000. Established and named in memory of the former Salamanca educator and dedicated member of the school community, this scholarship is for a student from the Salamanca City Central School District who is planning to attend a 2- or 4-year college or technical/ trade school, with second preference going to a student from any school in Cattaraugus County planning to attend a 2- or 4-year college or trade/technical school. Braker will major in sociology and minor in psychology at St. Bonaventure University. Donations can be made to any of these scholarship funds at CRCF, 301 North Union St., Suite 203 in Olean, or online at cattfoundation.org.

Are backyard chickens right for you? Raising backyard chickens has been a growing phenomenon for several years. Many cities have passed laws legalizing backyard chickens, encouraging many to raise chickens as a rewarding hobby. One of the biggest benefits to raising backyard chickens is that their eggs are fresher and often tastier than store-bought varieties. Hens can lay one egg per day. Multiply that egg per hen, and breakfast is always available. Another benefit to chickens is they produce a

natural fertilizer that can be used in gardens. “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” says chicken manure can be composted, aged and eventually added to the garden. In about six months, a person will accumulate about one cubic foot of manure per chicken. Egg shells and other compostable material can be added to create an even richer formula. Chickens also can help control bugs around the yard, offers the experts at Tractor Supply Company. Before investing in backyard chickens, people

should determine if chickens will fit with their lifestyle. Costs and care are a big consideration. Each chick will cost anywhere between $3 to $5 a bird. Then there’s feed to consider. The most expensive item will likely be the coop. The experts at The Happy Chicken Coop, a resource for raising chickens and starting coops, says handy men and women can build homemade coops, but ready-made ones will cost a few hundred dollars. The coop will need to offer around four square feet

of space per chicken (or what’s recommended for the breed). Despite being seemingly independent birds, chickens need people to be active caregivers. They require feed and water daily. The chickens will need a caregiver while you vacation. People who are frequently away from home should reconsider chickens.

Chickens also are prone to worms, parasites and lice. They need to have rear feathers trimmed to stay clean and sanitary, and they will require an area where they can “dust” and self-groom. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises not to cuddle and kiss chickens like pets because they can carry salmonella. Not every

coop is completely varmintproof, and some chickens may succumb to predators. Squeamish or sentimental folks may find chickens aren’t the right fit. Chickens require commitment and care that many people can provide. It is essential to do one’s homework to ensure that backyard chickens are a sound investment.

DEC Buys Land continued from 1 Management Area (WMA) in the towns of Ellicottville and Mansfield in Cattaraugus County and the Genesee River WMA in the Allegany County town of Willing. The parcels in Cattaraugus and Allegany counties will preserve natural habitats essential for wildlife populations and provide new wildlife-related public recreation opportunities such as fishing, hunting, trapping, and wildlife viewing. “Preserving and protecting our natural resource gems is not only crucial to the future of our planet, it’s a boost to tourism, jobs and our local economy,” Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul said of the new Southern Tier WMAs. “The Genesee River and Poverty Hill Wildlife Management Areas will preserve natural wildlife areas and provide yet another recreational opportunity for Western New Yorkers to explore the great outdoors.” Poverty Hill WMA is located in the towns of Mansfield and Ellicottville in Cattaraugus County. The broad, 950-acre landscape contains mature forest, wetlands, brushlands and open fields. Poverty Hill WMA is accessible from the north side of Cattaraugus County Route

13 and Poverty Hill Road, south of Hinman Hollow Road. DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos thanked the landowners who partnered with DEC “to protect these lands for the public’s benefit” and welcomed everyone “to explore and appreciate the new Genesee River and Poverty Hill WMAs.” Seggos said, “DEC is committed to enhancing fish and wildlife habitat and providing quality access for wildlife recreation across New York State and these two wildlife management areas are great additions to state lands in Western New York.” Seggos said both WMAs will support a significant variety of wildlife species including wild turkey, ruffed grouse, woodcock, white-tailed deer, black bear, beaver, muskrat, raccoon, fisher, red and gray fox, wood ducks and mallards. Both areas will also protect natural habitats that provide critical resting and feeding areas for migratory waterfowl and songbirds, and other wildlife including rare, threatened or endangered species. DEC purchased the properties for $2.12 million using federal funding from the Wildlife and Sportfish Restoration Program and the State’s Environmental Protection Fund. The state will actively manage the two WMAs to provide and protect quality wildlife habitat, foster wildlife reproduction and survival and promote wildlife-dependent public recreation.

In addition, non-wildlife-dependent recreational activities such as hiking, cross-country skiing, kayaking and canoeing will be permitted provided these activities do not impede or interfere with the primary wildlife management and public use goals of the area. DEC expects to complete construction of parking areas for both WMAs this year. Before visiting Genesee River or Poverty Hill WMAs, visit DEC’s website for a list of permitted activities, maps and other site information. WMAs are lands owned by New York State under the control and management of DEC’s Division of Fish and Wildlife. These lands are acquired primarily for wildlife reproduction and survival, as well as to provide wildlife-based recreational opportunities. WMAs provide exceptional areas for the public to interact with a wide variety of wildlife species. There are 125 WMAs across the state, comprising approximately 245,000 acres. Genesee River and Poverty Hill WMAs will be maintained with federal funding from the Wildlife and Sportfish Restoration program, set up by the Pittman-Robertson Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act of 1937, which apportions revenues generated from the excise taxes on the sale of firearms, ammunition and archery equipment to state wildlife agencies for conservation efforts and hunter education programs.

7 reasons to shop farmers’ markets A farmers’ market is likely coming to a field or open parking lot near you — if there isn’t already one operating nearby. The United States Department of Agriculture says that, between the years of 2008 and 2013, the number of farmers’ markets doubled across the country. Farmers’ markets will continue to thrive and expand as people increasingly realize the benefits of supporting local food providers. Buyers who are not yet familiar with farmer’s markets can examine the following seven reasons to break the ice. 1. Enjoy fresh, seasonal foods. Foods at farmers’ markets tend to be limited to in-season offerings. Some nutritionists suggest eating seasonally available foods is better for your body, because humans ate seasonal produce for thousands of years before shipping and refrigeration changed how people received the majority of their foods. In addition, many people feel that fresh, seasonal foods taste better than the alternatives. 2. Discover new foods. There’s always something

new at a farmers’ market, and this can entice shoppers to expand their flavor palates. Explore interesting, locally grown items. Even children may fall in love with colorful fruits or vegetables and their refreshing tastes. 3. Embrace organic and non-GMO offerings. Many farmers’ markets offer foods that are organically grown and are produced without GMOs. Farmers’ market retailers also tend to give firsthand accounts of where their foods come from and how they are grown or raised. 4. Indulge in nutritious foods. The vivid colors and smells emanating from farmers’ markets indicate just how fresh and nutritious the offerings tend to be. Farmers who peddle their wares at farmers’ markets adhere to careful farming methods to ensure their foods are as nutritious as possible. 5. Learn secrets and recipes. In addition to fresh produce, farmers’ markets may offer baked and other prepared goods. Shopkeepers often mingle with their customers, offering trade

secrets and recipe ideas. Additionally, local farm families supported by farmers’ markets generally offer supreme customer service to keep shoppers coming back week after week. 6. Turn the trip into a social excursion. A farmers’ market can be an exciting and flavorful social gathering place for families and groups of friends, as well as a great place to meet other members of the community. Sometimes farmers also mingle with local artisans, so the market can be a onestop-shopping locale for locally produced food and art. 7. Save money. Farmers’ markets may sell organic produce at a cost comparable or even lower than other retailers. That’s because local farmers don’t have to transport their items as far as retailers whose foods were shipped from far away places. Any time of the year is perfect for grabbing a tote bag and browsing the wares at a nearby farmers’ market, where shoppers are bound to find something fresh, unique and delicious.

How school shopping has changed in the pandemic era

One of the many free with gate admission grounds entertainment to be offered is the returning favorite, Indian River Olde Time Lumberjack Show. This is the lumberjack show that three times a day, takes a journey into the bygone days of yesteryear.

Exhibiting the skills, strength, and courage of the old time lumberjack, in both a humorous and educational format. The Indian River Olde Time Lumberjack Show is in its twenty-first year of presenting high quality family entertainment throughout the United States and Canada. Shows feature underhand

chopping, crosscut saw races, springboard chopping, log rolling, obstacle pole bucking, axe throwing and chainsaw carving. So watch the grounds entertainment page at our website: cattarauguscofair. com to see when shows will be offered. They run several times daily. Get there early to get a good seat!

Back-to-school shopping sales have long been indicators that the summer vacation season is coming to a close. Students and their parents may visit area stores or browse online looking for items to make the coming school year a success. Those lists have looked similar for decades, but shopping for school supplies in the pandemic era may prove to be a unique experience. Though hundreds of millions of adults and adolescents have now been vaccinated against COVID-19, there figures to be some lingering effects of the pandemic during the upcoming school year. That could affect which school supplies families buy in the weeks to come. Here’s a look at some of the latest trends. • A shift from physical stores: According to data from IBM’s U.S. Retail Index, the pandemic has accelerated a shift away from physical stores to digital shopping by about five

years. It’s likely that school shoppers will turn to the internet for their supplies, which means local brick and mortar shops should increase their web presence and digital shopping capabilities to reach online shoppers. This includes omnichannel fulfillment, such as buy online and pickup in store (BOPIS) options. • Reassessment of what’s essential: The pandemic may have changed which items consumers consider essential. For example, clothing became less significant as a greater number of students were enrolled in virtual learning. Backto-school shoppers may purchase less clothing and focus more on tech items, among others. • Traditional supplies become less necessary: In 2020, Deloitte forecasted that a shift in preferences and intentions would result in parents buying fewer traditional supplies, such as notebooks and office

supplies, as they chose to invest in digital resources to supplement children’s education. That shift likely will continue into this school year. • Support for local retailers: Community spirit grew in the early days of the pandemic and continues now. Many people prefer to shop in locally owned stores. Eighty percent of customers surveyed feel more or as connected to their communities, according to the business industry consultant company Accenture. • Customers are trying new brands and products: Shoppers are trying new products out of curiosity as well as necessity. Back-to-school shopping may include novel brands and other items that may not have been readily purchased in years past. Back-to-school shopping may continue to look a bit different than in previous years, spawning trends that may ultimately become the new normal.

Great ways to enjoy a day on a boat Few things can be as enjoyable on a warm day as spending some time on a boat. For many people, the sound of the water lapping beneath a boat and the feeling of a warm summer breeze blowing through their hair is the very essence of summer relaxation. Boating appeals to people with varying interests, and there are many ways one can enjoy a day spent traversing a nearby river, lake or ocean. Fishing Recreational fishing is wildly popular. According to the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation, in 2016 more than 47 million Americans participated in fishing at least once during the calendar year. In its Survey of Recreational Fishing in Canada, the organization Fisheries and

Oceans Canada found that more than 3.2 million adult anglers actively participated in a variety of recreational fishing activities in Canada in 2015. The sheer volume of people who enjoy recreational fishing suggests it’s an activity that has widespread appeal and it can benefit people of all ages and skill levels. What’s more, fishing provides a wonderful excuse to spend a day on a boat. Sailing Sailing is a rewarding and demanding hobby. Avid sailors often describe the origins of their love of sailing as “catching the bug.” Indeed, few hobbies can be as gratifying as sailing, which the organization Discover Boating® notes requires participants to be more active than almost any other type of boating. While sailing can

be physically demanding, when the waters are calm, few activities can be as peaceful and relaxing. Exploring Of course, even people who do not own their own boats can still enjoy time on the water. The Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation notes

that roughly 90 percent of history and/or see local maU.S. residents live within rine life. A day spent on a boat is a one hour of navigable bodies of water. Many waterfront great way to enjoy a warm communities, particularly those with tourism-based economies, are home to small businesses that provide local river, lake or ocean tours. These can be great ways to learn about local

afternoon. And the options are endless when it comes to how to spend such days on the water.

AUTO CORNER Why is tire rotation so important?

Vehicle owners need to keep maintenance on the mind to ensure their cars and trucks are operating at peak capacity. Various components should be checked and serviced at key intervals. Oil changes and fluid top-offs are part of routine maintenance, but it can be easy to forget about other important parts of the vehicle, including tires. Rotating tires is vital to their upkeep. advises that tire rotation involves routinely repositioning a vehicle’s tires in specific patterns from front to back and side to side. According to Big O Tires, the front tires tend to wear on the outside edges because the tire leans over when a driver turns a corner. The rear tires just follow the front ones, so they usually wear more evenly. By leaving tires in place, the outside edges on the front tires will wear down much faster than the rest and those tires will need to be replaced sooner. Rotation may be required by tire warranties. Rotation also keeps the tires working properly. Experts generally advise tire rotation every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, even if they do not show any signs of wear. It is challenging to determine if weather treads are uneven or how much wear has been sustained just by looking at them. Rotating tires can prolong the life of tires and decrease how frequently they need to be replaced. Rotating tires keeps the tread depth uniform and helps maintain traction and consistent handling across all four tires. Bridgestone says the tire rotation pattern that is best for a particular vehicle depends on the type of tire being used. Patterns are recommended by the standardizing body of the tire industry, called The Tire and Rim Association, Inc. Individuals can consult with professional mechanics about the proper way to rotate tires. Many tire manufacturers or automotive stores that have sold customers tires also will do tire rotations - some free of charge. In addition to proper traction, minimizing uneven tire treads causes the vehicle to be more balanced, advises Wrench, a mobile auto repair and maintenance company. This enables the driver to have more control even when roads are slippery. Many auto service centers will then align

and balance tires after they have been rotated. At this time the mechanic will likely check brakes as well, since it is easy to see and reach them when the tires are off. Tire rotation is an important component of vehicle maintenance. Check with a qualified automotive professional to see if it’s time to have your vehicle’s tires rotated.
