Acclaimed author to visit Cattaraugus Free Library in August CATTARAUGUS — August is shaping up to be a busy month at the Cattaraugus Free Library. Stacy Dermont, co-author of “The Hamptons Kitchen,” will be at the library at 1 p.m. Aug. 9. She grew up on her grandparents’ dairy farm in North Otto. Dermont considered applying to Cornell, but instead opted for a state school and a degree in costume design for theatre. She moved to Long Island for graduate school in 1994 and then to the Hamptons for her husband, Dr. Daniel Koontz, job in 2000. Dermont is the former editor of “Dan’s Papers,” where she also wrote the food and celebrity columns. She became friends with Hillary Davis, author of four French cookbooks, in 2016 and it was only natural for them to write a fresh produce-based cookbook. The cookbook is filled with beautiful pictures and wonderful recipes, each with a wine or beverage pairing. All attendees who make a donation to the Cattaraugus Free Library will receive a free autographed copy of “The Hamptons Kitchen.” The library is selling raffle tickets for a patriotic afghan donated by local resident Peggy Taylor. Tickets are $1 each

and all proceeds benefit the library. Drawing will be Sept. 3. The Adult Reading Challenge continues until Aug. 31. Every time you read a book, you may enter into a drawing for some great prizes, including a James Patterson gift set and an adult coloring gift set. This challenge is free and open to all adults. A new program is starting Aug. 4. Girl Power Hour will take place each Wednesday from 2-3 p.m. All girls between age 9 and 12 are welcome to join. Each week will have a different activity, including crafts and coloring. Reading with Charlie will resume Thursday, Aug. 5 beginning at 2 p.m. Children of all ages, and adults, are welcome to spend a few minutes reading to the beloved longhaired Chihuahua. The library is also weighing in on the idea of resuming the Crochet and Knitting Club. If you or someone you know would be interested in joining, call the library at 2579500. Staff are looking for other activity-based programming, so share any ideas you may have. The library is now open Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Tuesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.a

Photo provided Peter Jones (left) and his son, Mike Jones, recreate pre-colonization traditional Iroquois pottery while infusing their own unique neo-traditional style in paintings and sculpture.

Tri-County Arts Council to hold Jones exhibit closing reception Saturday OLEAN — The Tri-County Arts Council will holda closing reception of Mike and Peter Jones’ Yadahta:wak Hihšönya:nö’ (Father and Son: They Make Things) exhibit from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, July 24 in the gallery at 110 W. State St. The work of both artists reflects their Native American heritage and issues that have impacted the Hodínöhsö:ni:h, or “People of the Long House.” The reception, which will include a performance by Mike Jones on guitar and feature Seneca dishes catered by Tracie Brown, will

be the last opportunity for the public to view their extraordinary exhibit of neotraditional Iroquois pottery, paintings and sculpture and discuss the work with the artists. “Peter Jones almost single-handedly brought back an extinct art form that was an important part of his Haudenosaunee culture, while also putting his own take on it,” said Mikel

Wintermantel, executive director of the Tri-County Arts Council. Wintermantel said Mike Jones’s work takes those same themes, putting them into everything from painting to carving, along with the pottery he learned from his father. He said both Peter and Mike Jones have pieces in museums across the country. “It has been a real honor

to host them here at the Tri-County Arts Council Gallery,” Wintermantel added. “I encourage everyone to visit the TCAC (TriCounty Arts Council) gallery to see this important exhibit before it ends on the 24th.” The Tri-County Arts Council Gallery is open noon to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

Protect pets in hot weather Warm weather brings many changes. Warm weather can make travel more enjoyable and affords people more time to comfortably enjoy the great outdoors. It’s best to keep safety in mind when soaking up the sun. That’s important for all members of the family, including pets. Cats and dogs are as susceptible to heatrelated illnesses as their human companions. Recognize heat stroke Pets can suffer from heat stroke, according to the American Red Cross. Certain breeds of dogs are highly susceptible, particularly those with short snouts, such as pugs and bulldogs. Excessive exercise in hot weather, lack of appropriate shelter outdoors and leaving a dog in a hot car may precipitate an episode of heat stroke. It’s important to get the pet out of direct heat right away and check for signs of shock, which include seizures, a body temperature of 104 F or higher, stupor, increased heart rate, or excessive panting. Placing water-soaked towels on the pet’s feet, head, neck, and abdomen can bring down its temperature. Be cautious of hot surfaces

Humans wear shoes on their feet for protection, but pets do not have that luxury. Think about how hot your feet can feel when you scurry barefoot across hot sand en route to the shoreline or to cross a deck to get to the pool. When the sun beats down on surfaces, those surface temperatures rise quickly. According to a 2010 study by Liberty Home and Pet Services, at peak afternoon sun and an ambient temperature of 95 F in southern Florida, the temperature of cement was measured at 125 F, red brick at 135 F, blacktop at 140 F, and grass at 102 F. Individuals who think a car is safer for their dog or cat may be surprised the informal study measured 152 F on seat surfaces. Provide extra water It’s likely you will need to fill your pets’ water bowls more frequently in warm weather than during other times of the year. Be sure to provide constant access to fresh water, even for young puppies who may be learning to house train. Avoid cutting fur too short If a veterinarian suggests a hair cut may be beneficial for keeping a pet cool or comfortable, resist the urge

to shave down to the skin. Having at least one inch of fur will protect the pet from sunburn. Outdoor hazards Warm weather may bring out a high number of insects and wildlife. Use a flea and tick preventative product and medication to protect against heartworm, which is transmitted through mosquitoes. Snakes, skunks, raccoons, foxes, and other animals may be roaming around, and a scuffle with your pet can result in injury. Pets need extra care during the warm weather to avoid damage and sickness from the sun, heat and more.

Tips to book a vacation rental in a unique summer After a dismal 2020 when people’s movements were greatly restricted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, travel and tourism could increase significantly beginning in the summer of 2021. That’s great news for the businesses and workers who make their living in the tourism industry, and it’s music to the ears of people itching to get out of the house and head off for parts unknown. • Act quickly. Travel and tourism industry professionals reported an uptick in demand for vacation rentals as early as February 2021. COVID-19 vaccinations had already been available to millions of people by then, so it’s no surprise rentals picked up around that time. Anyone still looking for a rental should be prepared to move

quickly upon finding properties they like, as remaining rentals may not stay on the market with more and more fully vaccinated people looking to travel. • Recognize that location might not be everything. Location is a top priority in a typical vacation season, but summer 2021 figures to be an atypical time to travel. Location typically bears such significance because travelers want to be close to attractions and amenities like shops and restaurants. But many areas, including some tourism hotspots, are only gradually reopening this summer. So proximity to amenities may not be as important this summer as it has been in the past. Recognizing that may expand travelers’ options as they scan vacation rental

listings. • Focus on the rental. Though location might not be as important in the summer of 2021, the rental property itself might take on heightened importance. Restaurants may still be operating under capacity restrictions this summer, which might make it hard to book dinner reservations. Travelers also may not want to dine out three times per day if doing so requires adhering to various restrictions. That places extra importance on the amenities of the vacation rental. Many people are planning to go on vacation this summer. Would-be travelers may have to reconsider their traditional approach to vacation rentals in response to what figures to be a unique time to travel.

Masks are a public health measure that are likely to stick around In the opening months of the COVID-19 pandemic, masks became a must-have accessory. Public health agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization urged governments to issue mask mandates to help stop the spread of the potentially deadly coronavirus that claimed the lives of millions of people across the globe. Though vaccines approved at the end of 2020 have helped communities return to some semblance

of normalcy, public health officials are recommending that some safety measures, including masks, be kept in place. In February 2021, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infection Diseases, indicated the possibility that mask-wearing measures will remain in place into 2022. That decision is ultimately up to local governments in many parts of the world, including the United States, and many government officials had

already relaxed mask mandates by spring 2021. The issue of masks was politicized in the early months of the pandemic, but health officials like Dr. Fauci have repeatedly noted that masks are about public health, not politics. Dr. Fauci has routinely noted that wearing masks can help prevent the spread of COVID-19, including new coronavirus variants that could be especially dangerous. Masks have put business owners in particularly difficult situations, forcing

many to act as their own police when customers refuse to wear masks. The road has been especially difficult for business owners who have kept mask mandates in place despite operating in communities where government-mandated mask requirements have been lifted. Certain strategies may increase the likelihood that customers are more cooperative in regard to wearing masks. For example, the popular grocery chain Whole Foods, which is

owned by Amazon, offered free masks to anyone who wanted one in their stores. Clearly stating mask policies in bold, large lettering near story entryways is another way to keep customers informed. Such signage can reduce the likelihood of confrontations in the store. And though business owners may shudder at the thought of policing their customers, hiring additional security to support staff tasked with enforcing mask policies can help employees feel safer and may

compel uncooperative customers to more quickly recognize the importance of adhering to store policies. Masks figure to remain an important public health accessory even as millions and millions of people get vaccinated against COVID-19. Business owners may not relish enforcing their mask policies, but they can do so in ways designed to reduce the likelihood of confrontations.

A Simply Sweet Dessert Bar Finding a unique dessert to impress others can be a tall task. Cakes, brownies and cookies are classics but can be boring and repetitive. When you want something easy, delicious and made to impress, think outside the sweet treat box. Next time you’re in a pinch for something sweet, try these Sopapilla Bars. They have a sugary, crunchy exterior, but on the inside, they are creamy and delicious. Great for gatherings of all kinds, they’re cut into perfect portions and rare enough to give partygoers something to talk about. The prep is simple and they can be made in advance then stored in the fridge overnight so there is no lastminute rushing around the kitchen. To start, in a large bowl, beat cream cheese until soft. Add sugar and cornstarch then combine. Add vanilla extract and one egg then beat until combined. Place one can of unrolled crescent rolls in the bottom of a lightly greased pan and pinch together the seams.

Add cream cheese mixture to the pan and spread out smooth. Then add remaining unrolled crescent rolls on top before spreading with melted butter. Mix together sugar and cinnamon to sprinkle over the top of the bars. Bake for 35-40 minutes. Cool to room temperature and chill in the fridge for at least 3 hours or overnight. These bars are also the perfect sweet treat for kids. They will love the sugarcoated top and you will love they are expanding their palates by trying something new. Whether it’s a birthday party, a barbecue or any celebration, this dessert is the way to go. It’s sweet, it’s got texture and it’s a home run when it comes to a simple sweet. Seneca Mass Graves continued from 6 “I wanted to sponsor an event that was morethan the standard health fair,” he said. “That’s why we invited a variety of care providers in the fields of healthy minds and bodies. The event would begin with the sacred Native tradition of a talking/healing circle. Seneca’s intent was to help the community discuss and deal with a racist on-air incident earlier this year when a radio show host openly denigrated African American women. “It’s also why I thought it was important to incorporate a talking/healing circle to address the many forms of racism that exist in our community,” he said.

(Family Features) Family reunions this summer are sure to take on special meaning as families reunite after months apart. Organizing such a momentous event may feel like a lot of work, but thinking of it in smaller pieces can make it easier to manage. Finding a date that works for everyone may be the biggest hurdle. Once that essential detail is set, start planning your family get-together with these tips from the travel experts at Vrbo: Decide on a celebration style. Family reunions come in all shapes and sizes. You might plan a gathering for a single day with a big meal and plenty of time for chatting with relatives, or it may be a multi-day affair filled with activities that get all ages involved. Pick the place. The location of your reunion depends on many factors. In some cases, families plan for a location that’s easily accessible for the majority, like a midway point or a city where a large branch of the family tree is rooted. Other families build reunions around the head of the family and plan the location around where the eldest members of the family reside. Still other reunions are destination getaways with multiple households in one vacation location. Choose where you’ll stay. Figuring out what kind of lodging best suits your reunion depends on a variety of considerations, but the larger the group, the more challenging it can be. A

“To try and provide peace among us.” What was not part of Seneca’s original plan was expanding that talking/ healing circle to address a series of more disturbing and deeply discriminatory acts. “What I didn’t anticipate was the continuing stream of stories out of Canada, along with U.S. Interior Secretary Haaland’s recent announcement of her investigation, all focused on the mass grave remains of Native children being found on the grounds of former Indigenous boarding schools,” he said. Seneca said it is a disturbing story that rings true for many Native people whose grandparents and parents, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, were taken from their families and placed in such governmentrun institutions, with the goal to strip them of their identities, cultures, traditions and languages and

assimilate them into white society. Seneca said many Native children were abused mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually at these militaristic schools. He said over 80% of them were sexually abused. “The current spotlight on these stories is dredging up painful memories for Native people around the world,” he said. “They are also informing a large number of nonNatives who have been unaware of these schools and the tragedies that occurred there.” One such school existed for 100 years on the Cattaraugus Territory near Irving. Seneca said many Seneca children endured the hardships and trauma of terrible abuses within the confines of this institution known as the Thomas Indian School. “Many other native children from the northeast region of the United States were taken from

their families and endured tragic lives at this school as well,” he said. “Now we are haunted by the questions of how many of these children never made it back to their families? How many may be buried on the former campus of the Thomas Indian School?” With the launch of Secretary Haaland’s investigation, Seneca said they may soon find out. “That’s why I feel it is important to expand the focus of our talking/healing circle to help all of us try and make sense of these senseless tragedies.” The Tallchief Health & Healing Expo will take place 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 31. The talking/healing circle will begin at 8 a.m., led by former Seneca President Dennis Bowen from the Allegany Territory. Both events are free and open to the public.

Plan a Memorable Family Reunion vacation rental home may be an option when you’re bringing multiple families together under one roof or plan to stay for several days. Many vacation rentals even offer amenities like pools or hot tubs that can be enjoyed privately rather than shared with the rest of the resort or hotel guests. A tool like Vrbo’s Trip Board of reunion-friendly homes can help you find inspiration for a perfect place. Plan activities. Depending on your family’s style, planning how everyone will pass the time may be a scheduled itinerary or a loose list of potential things to do. Either way, leave time for casual conversation and simply enjoying a few moments together, as well as lots of entertainment to keep kids occupied while the adults catch up. Create a menu. From potluck to catering and everything in between, there are numerous options when it comes to feeding a reunion crowd. You might have everyone bring their own food, ask each family take turns serving meals or plan easy bar-style meals like tacos or walking nachos. It’s a good idea to coordinate your menu plans so you don’t waste food or have duplicate ingredients in the refrigerator. Remember to plan for extra snacks and desserts, too. Many homes available through Vrbo include access to refrigerators and fully equipped kitchens, making it easy to store extra food for the gathering. Incorporate your

heritage. What sets a family reunion apart from other types of gatherings is the focus on family. Make your reunion special by incorporating special aspects of your heritage, whether it’s a monogrammed centerpiece for the dining table or photos of multiple generations you scatter around the venue. Another idea for a multi-generational family reunion is a slideshow of photo memories set to music that plays as the precursor to a family movie night under the stars. AUTO CORNER Stock up on vehicle breakdown supplies

Unforeseen situations can crop up at any time. Anyone who has had a roadside breakdown in their car understands this. A flat tire or an engine malfunction is something no driver wants to experience, but those with a well-stocked vehicle emergency kit and breakdown strategy can get through most situations rather easily. A 2017 survey from AAA found that 40 percent of drivers in the United States are not ready to handle a typical roadside

emergency breakdown. The organization estimates it helps some seven million motorists get back on the road each summer. A well-equipped roadside emergency kit may help drivers get their vehicles back on the road on their own. · First aid kit: The first aid kit will celebrate its 133rd birthday in 2021. The Johnson & Johnson company began commercializing first aid kits in 1888. Having a first aid kit in the car to treat minor injuries can be helpful in the event of an accident or even after injuring oneself during a breakdown. · Fire extinguisher: Cars are full of various mechanical parts and are susceptible to catching on fire. The National Fire Protection Association says vehicle fire extinguishers need to be rated for Class B and C fires. · Jumper cables: A weak or dead battery is often the culprit in breakdowns. Jumper cables enable drivers to get a charge from another motorist, and may help get a person back on the road quickly. If possible, get a set of cables that also comes with safety gloves and heavy duty clamps, offers Defensive Driving Online, a defensive driving course. · Mobile phone/charger: A mobile phone is essential for calling for assistance, but the phone is only useful if it’s charged. · Blanket: Keep a blanket in the trunk or another storage area. Should the vehicle die in cold weather, that blanket can help keep passengers warm until assistance arrives. · Basic tools: Tools like a screwdriver, ratchet set and wrench may enable drivers to complete minor repairs. Tools also should include tire-changing gear, such as a jack and lug nut remover. · Traction aid: Non-clumping kitty litter or sand can provide the traction needed to get off of a slippery area of roadway. · Flashlight: A flashlight can help keep you visible and able to see your surroundings in dark conditions. · Flares: Should a breakdown occur in the dark, flares can alert other drivers. · Snacks and water: Water and food that stores well, such as emergency rations, granola bars or trail mix, can quell hunger

pangs and provide an energy boost while waiting for help. · Rope/bungee cords/tarp: These items can be used in various situations to secure a vehicle. While drivers can gather these items separately, many companies offer all-in-one vehicle emergency kits. A safety kit is essential for all drivers.
