MHA RECOVERY LUNCHEONS RETURN

Opera House Cinema Series to Present Elvis Fredonia, NY — The “a wildly over-the-top and House

next film in the Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center is the lauded biopic “Elvis,” starring Tom Hanks and Austin Butler. It will be screened Sat., July 30, and Tues., Aug. 2 , at 7:30 p.m. “Elvis” explores the life and music of Elvis Presley (Butler), seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Hanks). The story delves into the complex dynamic between Presley and Parker spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. Katie Walsh, in the Tribune News Service, calls the film “a resurrection of the King himself. Left the building? Not if Baz Luhrmann has anything to say about it.” Christy Lemire, on NPR’s FilmWeek, calls it

extremely entertaining biopic.” Peter Howell, in the Toronto Star, says “Luhrmann’s ‘Elvis’ is more than all right, mama. It blasts the screen with the Aussie director’s trademark glitter and bravado but also hits the right historical and musical notes for a biopic worthy of a legendary performer.” Peter Travers, on ABC News, says “the grit and grace of Austin Butler’s performance as The King is a thing of beauty. A star is born right here.” Rated PG-13 for strong language, smoking, substance abuse, and suggestive material, “Elvis” runs two hours, 39 minutes.

Tickets are available at the door the night of each screening. A book of 10 movie passes is available at the door or online at www. fredopera.org. For more information, call the Opera House Box Office at 716679-1891. The Opera House Cinema Series is sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank. In addition, Opera

programming is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. The Opera House is equipped with individualized closed captioning eyeglasses for the deaf as well as with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or Opera House staff member. The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center is a member-supported not-for-profit performing arts center with a mission to “present the performing arts for the benefit of our community and region … providing access to artistic diversity … and high quality programming at an affordable price.” It is located in Village Hall in downtown Fredonia. Jamestown, N.Y.: On July 19, monthly Recovery Luncheons returned to the Mental Health Association in Chautauqua County (MHA) for the first time since February 2020. Executive Director Steven Cobb announced that MHA’s community partners – St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Jamestown, Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Falconer and the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department – will rotate preparing and serving lunches on the third Tuesday of every month. All are welcome. Cobb and Program Director Michael Nordin displayed a large artwork that was created at a recent Fun Friday under the direction of art therapist Maria Castronova-Smith. The painting will be framed and hung at the MHA. The 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Fun Fridays are a chance to take some time out from the world to relax and enjoy the moment for a while. Cobb said more art opportunities will be coming up. Besides on-site Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings, the MHA has its own groups in the early evening. Monday’s 5:30 p.m. Recovery Yoga is led by triple yoga-certified Jen Raines, in recovery herself, and is open to those with any or no yoga experience. Based on SMART Recovery, the Family and Friends support group meets at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, Alternatives to Suicide at 5:30 on Wednesdays, and Women’s PTSD at 6 p.m. on Thursdays. These are in addition to the many MHA groups that meet during the day in Jamestown and Dunkirk. Volunteers are being sought for Overdose Remembrance Day that will be celebrated

on Sunday, August 28, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Jamestown. One lucky luncheon participant won the door prize of a backpack loaded with a variety of items, several gift cards, and tickets to the Chautauqua County Fair. The Mental Health Association in Chautauqua County is a peer recovery center offering support groups and individual coaching for people looking to improve their lives, deepen wellness, thrive in recovery, or support those on a recovery path. Peers use their personal stories to help people find recovery in their own lives in their own way. Anyone with questions or in need of services for themselves or a family member is welcome to call or stop in at the Jamestown

facility at Door 14 in the rear of the Gateway Center, 31 Water Street. Hours are Monday – Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hours for the MHA at Grace Lutheran Church, 601 Eagle Street in Dunkirk are Wednesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To learn more about the Mental Health Association, call (716) 661-9044 or visit MHAChautauqua. org or facebook.com/ MHAChautauqua.
