The image of a bearded, unkempt Bryan Cranston tells you a great deal about what’s ahead for “Your Honor” in the second and final season of the Showtime legal thriller.

Indeed, as the new round gets underway Friday, Jan. 13, on Showtime’s online and On Demand platforms (and Sunday, Jan. 15, on cable), Cranston’s character of New Orleans Judge Michael Desiato is in a state of grief so profound following the accidental shooting of son Adam (Hunter Doohan) in the closing moments of Season 1 that he’s really stopped caring about much of anything.

Which prompted the show’s star and executive producer to consider how that might

CoVer sTory

look on screen — and on himself.

“It’s really allowed me to reflect on my own personal life,” the actor explains, “and the part of the process of dealing with tragedy or disappointment or grief is to allow yourself to feel it, to truly be in it and not try to hastily get out of that but put your arms around grief and almost welcome it as a way of process to then work through it. I think, the more we try to resist it, the longer it takes to process it, and it may then linger. It also may create and exacerbate other situations in your life. So, I think ... it’s allowing me to mature in understanding all of life and its ups and downs.”

Beyond Michael’s grief, Desire Gang leader Big Mo (Andrene Ward-Hammond)

will be making waves this season as she pushes to expand her empire throughout the city with the help of Little Mo (Machekanyanga); Fia Baxter (Lilli Kay) is forced to reckon with her family’s true nature in the wake of her boyfriend’s shooting while her brother Carlo (Jimi Stanton) is determined to follow in his father Jimmy’s (Michael Stuhlbarg) criminal footsteps; and Eugene’s (Benjamin Flores Jr.) attempt to avenge his brother’s death threatens to turn New Orleans into a tinder box ready to explode into all-out war.

Also, Rosie Perez joins the cast as Olivia Delmont, a charismatic U.S. Attorney who must manipulate an unwilling asset to bring down a crime organization. Other cast returning this season

include Isiah Whitlock Jr. as Charlie Figaro, a local politician and Michael’s best friend; Hope Davis as Jimmy’s formidable wife Gina; and Margo Martindale as Sen. Elizabeth Guthrie, the mother of Jimmy’s late wife.

“I think what’s hopefully really interesting about Season 2, or one of the aspects, is that it’s a continuation from Season 1, but it’s not a reset and a redo ...,” explains Joey Hartstone, who replaces creator Peter Moffat as showrunner this season. “So, expect to see the characters that you know, but because they all endured such trauma in Season 1, it’s impacted who they are and often changed who they are and how they react (and) are somewhat different from who you met.”

It started as a school project for Bob Heft’s junior-year history class in 1958, and it only earned a B-minus. His design had 50 stars, even though Alaska and Hawaii weren’t states yet; Heft figured the two would earn statehood soon and showed the government his design. After President Dwight D. Eisenhower called to say the design was approved, Heft’s teacher changed his grade to an A.

Kings winning again with Sabonis in the post

One of the NBA’s pleasant surprises of the 2022-23 season has been the Sacramento Kings. And at the front of the team’s push toward its first postseason appearance in 17 years is Domantas Sabonis. Indeed, in its 6-foot-11-inch power forward, the Kings have an inside presence who can do it all – score, rebound, play defense and pass. And teamed with young point guard De’Aaron Fox, the 26-year-old Lithuanian gives the team a solid nucleus around which to build for years to come.

As of early December, the son of Basketball Hall of Famer Arvydas Sabonis was posting very solid numbers – 17 points per game on 60.9 percent shooting to go with 11 rebounds (sixth in the league) and 6.6 assists. But beyond that, he does a lot of other things that don’t show up in box scores.

His dribble handoffs have become a main feature of the Sacramento offense, and the team scores more points on the dribble handoff than any other in the league. He’s also a smart enough decision maker to know when not to deploy that play. And he’s one of the best post scorers in the NBA, one that almost always requires a double team, which often leads to wide open shots for the Kings.

Best of all, his unselfish play has made his teammates better, which is a hallmark of a playoff team. That’s what the Kings appear to be, something they haven’t been able to say since 2005-06. Sabonis and the Kings can be seen in action Wednesday, Jan. 11, when they play host to the Houston Rockets in the late game of an ESPN doubleheader.

BEST ELVIS PRESLEY MOVIES

“Love Me Tender” (1956) Presley’s first movie role turned an average Civil War story into an event – and also got the picture’s title altered, thanks to one of the tunes

“Loving You” (1957) Mirroring Presley’s own rise to stardom, this rags-to-riches drama boasts one of his most sensitive performances, before he entered the phase of having his songs hung on threadbare plots.

“Jailhouse Rock” (1957) The famous scene with Presley singing, and gyrating to, the title tune says it all about this classic.

“Flaming Star” (1960) Guided by director Don Siegel, who later turned Clint Eastwood into Dirty Harr y, Presley puts real effort into playing a man of two cultures that clash, putting him in a bind.

“Wild in the Country” (1961) Presley and playwright Clifford Odets weren’t a

typical combination, but credit was due the still-early movie star for being ambitious enough to tackle sophisticated material that would challenge even the most experienced actor.

“Blue Hawaii” (1961) You couldn’t hope for the islands to look lovelier than in this combination of Elvis showcase and travelogue, also intriguing for Presley raising his acting game opposite a veteran talent by the name of Angela Lansbur y.

“Kid Galahad” (1962) Presley is sincere as a boxer who succeeds in the ring, though he desires a quieter life.

“Fun in Acapulco” (1963) Presley in his prime; Ursula Andress, fresh off being the first “Bond girl”; Mexican locations. What’s not to like?

“Viva Las Vegas” (1964) Presley’s ultimate star vehicle gave him an ideal

partner in Ann-Margret and pretty much set the blueprint (he races cars!) for numerous other Elvis movies.

“Roustabout” (1964) This arguably was the best of Presley’s efforts once he got into more of a cookie-cutter mode (he’s a motorcycle-riding carnival worker!) with his movies.

“Charro!” (1969) Commendably, Presley tried to turn his screen career around –but pretty late in the game – by not singing a note in this mature Western.

“Elvis: That’s the Way It Is” (1970) It’s ironic that one of Presley’s final movies offers one of his most dynamic screen appearances, before, during and after a Las Vegas concert performance. Turner Classic Movies shows this as part of a Presley birthday tribute Sunday, Jan. 8 (he would have turned 88).

OF ‘CHICAGO FIRE’ ON NBC

You do a now-rare series guest-star turn in the Jan. 11 episode of “Chicago Fire.” Who do you play?

Melissa is an insurance investigator who sees something that looks a little fishy, so she comes in and ruffles some feathers to try to get to the truth of what’s going on.

All of my scenes are with Taylor Kinney (alias the show’s Lt. Kelly Severide), and it was so much fun to work with him. He’s got really great energy on the set, and even when we weren’t filming, it was fun to have the off-camera banter and then get serious in the scenes. He’s an absolute sweetheart. Did you have much time to be around others on the “Chicago Fire” staff?

The crew is really awesome. You can see why they’ve been around for so many seasons, because they’re great. It’s a welloiled machine, and everyone is really nice.

This was presented to me as maybe a recurring role, so I’m hoping that she’ll come back around. At the very end, she says, “We might see each other again” ... so we’ll see. I would love that! It would be a dream to come back, because it was such a great experience. Were you looking to do a guest shot on an established series, or did this just happen to come along?

It just came along. I’m always looking for things, and I decided to audition for this and give it my best ... and when I got the call, I was so excited. I filmed for four days, and it was during the holidays, so I was kind of back-and-forth.

I haven’t had a vacation in a year, and I was supposed to be in the Bahamas for my birthday, then I got the call about this. My agents were like, “Well, good news: You booked ‘Chicago Fire.’

Bad news: You’re going to have to cancel your trip.’ But it’s all good. I got to go home and see the family, so it was cool.
