Though she was a major fan of “Night Court” in her youth, little did Melissa Rauch know what a big role she would play in bringing it back.

The “Big Bang Theory” alum is a star and (with her husband Winston) an executive producer of the sitcom that returns to NBC in a revival premiering Tuesday, Jan. 17. Rauch plays Abby Stone, who follows the path of her father Harry (the late Harry Anderson’s character) as the judge in a nighttime New York courtroom. A very significant returnee is John Larroquette as prosecutor turned defense attorney Dan Fielding, the part for which the actor won four

consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards.

“I was excited about producing ‘Night Court,’ and I really thought I would just be behind the camera on it,” the lively Rauch says. “Then, as we were developing it and once John came on board and the scripts came together, l thought, ‘I’d be such a dummy not to play this role!’ I feel grateful that I ended up making that decision. I know I would have been kicking myself.”

The chance to act opposite Larroquette was a huge incentive for Rauch to appear in “Night Court,” too. “It is a true dream come true to be working with him,” she states.

“Watching how he brilliantly executes every line that’s given to him, he’s never not

wonderful. He’s a masterclass in acting.”

Rauch has a mutual admirer in Larroquette, who passed on returning to “Night Court” until she decided to act in it. He explains that mirrors Dan Fielding’s return to court: “He’s not a part of that system any longer, so he would not have even approached the idea, except that this woman is Judge Harry Stone’s daughter. He finds that touching, and he decides that he can’t leave her alone in that place at 3 in the morning. She’s going to need backup, so he decides to join her. Reluctantly.”

Among other new “Night Court” regulars, the singlenamed Lacretta succeeds Richard Moll’s Bull as the court bailiff, with India de

Beaufort as an assistant district attorney and Kapil Talwalkar as the court clerk. While aiming to generate something fresh, Rauch also wants to pay sufficient homage to the original “Night Court.”

So does Larroquette, who admits to thinking often of such late former co-stars as Anderson, Markie Post and Charles Robinson while making the update. He recalls it being “very emotional the first week that we did this, because I would ‘see’ them sitting at the table.”

Larroquete notes that he suggested the rehirings of the original script supervisor, “so I could look at them occasionally and go, ‘Do you remember when ... ?’ ”

The Joker returns to Melbourne after a year absence

After missing last year’s Australian Open, Novak Djokovic will be back in Melbourne this week to continue his assault on the ATP record books.

Indeed, the 35-year-old Serb comes into the tennis year’s first Grand Slam event as the heavy favorite, even after he was forced to withdraw from the tournament in 2022 after authorities revoked his visa due to his COVID-19 vaccination status. That ban was overturned in the fall and the visa reinstated, and now the nine-time tourney champ is overjoyed to be back.

Though ranked No. 5 by the ATP at this writing, there is little doubt he is still the world’s best men’s player. In addition to going after his record 10th singles title at Melbourne Park, he’ll also be looking to add to his Slam trophy case with his 22nd championship, tying him with Rafael Nadal for tops in that category.

And he’ll also be looking to prove that at an age when most pro players are hanging up their tennis whites, he’s still not only relevant but dominant. He looked every bit the champ in his last appearance in the Aussie in 2021, taking less than two hours to dispatch Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the final 7-5, 6-2, 6-2.

“Grand Prix” (1966) Director John Frankenheimer’s drama, which uses exciting driver’s point-of-view and split-screen techniques plentifully, sees Garner lead an all-star cast as a veteran of the international racing circuit.

“Hour of the Gun” (1967) Garner makes a fine Wayatt Earp in this mature Western that reunited him with “The Great Escape” director John Sturges.

“Support Your Local Sheriff!” (1969) After making several serious Westerns, Garner spoofed the genre in this comedy about an unlikely lawman who grows into the job.

“The Rockford Files” (1974-80) Garner’s famously laid-back personality gave him another television hit, as he played a flawed private detective who still managed to get his cases solved. After the weekly run ended, Garner made several TV-movie sequels.

“Victor/Victoria” (1982) Reunited with Julie Andrews and directed by her husband, Blake Edwards, Garner plays a Chicago

gangster who can’t believe her character is the female impersonator she’s posing as.

“Murphy’s Romance” (1985) Garner earned his only Oscar nomination as a pharmacist who develops a May-December romance with a divorced mom (Sally Field, who has called Garner the best kisser she ever worked with) new to his small town.

“Promise” (1986) This Emmy-winning drama boasts superb work by Garner as a man who has to assume custody of his troubled younger brother (James Woods).

“Barbarians at the Gate” (1993) This terrific,fact-based cable movie takes a whimsical approach as Garner plays the chief of RJR Nabisco, whose bid to take over the company sets up a labyrinth of financing complications,

“The Notebook” (2004) One of Garner’s most popular projects came toward the end of his career, a relationship drama that spans several decades. And if you don’t have tissues for the ending, at least you’ve been forewarned.

OF ‘WILL TRENT’ ON ABC

What drew you to the role of police detective Angie Polaski on “Will Trent”?

I’ve known Ramon (title star Rodriguez) for 15 years, and I texted him after I read the pilot and said, “Hey, this thing you’ve got going on seems really cool and interesting. I love these characters.” And now, I’m one of them!

Do you feel that having known your co-star helps your characters’ on-screen relationship?

It really does. From the viewpoint of an actor, you don’t need to have known someone to play having known them your whole life, but it is really nice. I felt that right away, even though there is a very clear line of demarcation between Ramon and Will, and between me and Angie. We’re definitely having a good time.

Did you know the “Will Trent” novels by Karin Slaughter before starting the show? I hadn’t been aware of them, and I was telling my aunt about them and she was like, “Oh, great, I’ll buy them.” And she literally has read all of them already! She’s filling me in. There are parts of this that are directly from the book series, but some story points and even character points diverge. What are your thoughts on doing so many series over your career, from “Parenthood” to “Ten Days in the Valley” to “Will Trent”?

Just before this, I did an extremely short project ... an independent film in Austin, Texas. That was such an intense experience, and I’ve noticed the different things about doing a series. The relationships are with a much larger crew, and they have more time to develop. I’m still working on getting to know everyone, and I’m enjoying knowing that we have more time together. Also, being a regular cast member on a series and having different directors come through, it’s interesting being the one who’s static with others revolving around you. You definitely feel a responsibility for the show.
