Along with the show’s characters, viewers are about to get the chance to determine whether the “Accused” in a new drama series are guilty.

Fox introduces the anthology “Accused” Sunday, Jan. 22, before it settles into its regular slot the following Tuesday. With Howard Gordon — who developed the show from a BBC program — an executive producer along with his former “Homeland” and “24” colleague Alex Gansa and “The Good Doctor’s” David Shore, the program has an initial season comprised of 15 stories that each find a main character faced with a difficult choice ... leaving the audience to pass judgment on it.

CoVer sTory

The roster of “Accused” directors includes Primetime Emmy winner Michael Chiklis (“The Shield”), Oscar owner Marlee Matlin (“Children of a Lesser God”) and Primetime Emmy, Grammy and Tony recipient Billy Porter (“Kinky Boots,” “Pose”). Chiklis also stars in the premiere episode, playing a man who suspects his son (Oakes Fegley) is planning dangerous activity; among others who appear in the series are Wendell Pierce, Abigail Breslin, Jason Ritter, Rhea Perlman, Jill Hennessy, Margo Martindale, MalcolmJamal Warner, Rachel Bilson, Molly Parker, Betsy Brandt and Keith Carradine.

For any differences between the stories on “Accused,” Gordon confirms that the overall series reflects

“a format uniformity. We wanted, at the same time, to give all the filmmakers and all the storytellers (their) own kind of vocabulary. It really was finding that line between what’s kind of an esthetic rule book and set of parameters, and just kind of giving (the participants) the latitude to tell the story in the best way possible.”

Chiklis maintains that approach worked well for him.

“When I directed episodes of ‘The Shield,’ ” he recalls, “that was a very specific template and you had to really adhere to it. Because this is an anthology series, (the stories are) sort of stand-alone featurettes, and there was a huge difference in terms of tone and tenor between the pilot episode that I starred in

as an actor and the episode that I directed.”

Matlin agrees, drawing on her much more frequent experiences as an actress in explaining (via her longtime interpreter, Jack Jason) that usually, “I show up on set. I go to makeup. I go to hair. I go into my trailer. I wait for my call. It’s the long hours you spend waiting, mostly.

“Now, as a director, my time passes so quickly. I mean, 12 hours has already happened? I’m so focused on every aspect of production. I have to be involved with a crew. I have to work with the creative team. I have to work with the cinematographers. It’s a completely different experience, and it accesses a different and creative side of my personality.”

Simmons’ play is turning heads in Brooklyn

For the past two seasons, the Brooklyn Nets seemed to lead the NBA in dysfunction.

When Kyrie Irving’s mouth wasn’t getting him suspended, Kevin Durant was making clear he and head coach Steve Nash couldn’t exist on the same team and James Harden just wanted out. Period.

When the former MVP got his wish in February 2022, his trade to the Philadelphia 76ers brought back one of the league’s most enigmatic players in Ben Simmons. And now the 6-foot-10-inch Australian has been one of the keys to the Nets’ recent winning streak.

On Dec. 23, he was instrumental in shutting out two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo in the fourth quarter of the Nets’ 118-100 win over the Milwaukee Bucks, and four days later he held Donovan Mitchell to 5-of-16 shooting in Brooklyn’s 125-117 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

These aren’t contributions that show up in any box score but fans, opposing players and certainly his teammates notice.

Still, the defense- and passing-first point guard has managed to put up some impressive secondary numbers during his team’s streak. In the 10 wins from Dec. 7-28, he had the team’s best net rating (+21.7) and defensive rating (106.6) as well as the top offensive rating (127.9) among the regular rotation players. Not bad for someone not known for his shooting.

He’s still getting used to his new teammates as well as healing from May back surgery. So the best may be yet to come as the No. 2-seeded Nets strive to take the top seed from the Boston Celtics in the East. Simmons and the Nets can be seen on national television twice this week: visiting his former teammates the 76ers Wednesday, Jan. 25, on ESPN, and at home against the New York Knicks, Saturday, Jan. 28, on ABC.

BEST HENRY FONDA MOVIES

Sort of a “Gone With

the Wind” without the same exact characters, this well-regarded drama casts Bette Davis as a willful Southern belle who wants to retrieve the man she let get away (Fonda).

“Young Mr. Lincoln” (1939) This John Ford-directed view of the young Abraham Lincoln did much to advance Fonda’s profile.

“The Grapes of Wrath” (1940) A milestone in American movies, director John Ford’s version of the John Steinbeck novel hinges largely on Fonda’s moving portrayal of Tom Joad, the next generation of a Depression-era migrant family.

“The Ox-Bow Incident” (1942) A potential lynch mob is at the heart of director William A. Wellman’s famous Western, with Fonda as one of the men who wants to see true justice done in the case of a farmer’s

“My Darling Clementine” (1946) Stories of the Old West continued to hold appeal for Fonda as he teamed yet again

of one of his brothers.

“Fort Apache” (1948) John Ford called the shots for Fonda again – as well as for John Wayne, Shirley Temple and others –in this signature Western about opposition between the commanding officers at a military outpost.

“Mister Roberts” (1955) Fonda recreated his Broadway performance in the title role as a Navy officer having his own war with his ship’s captain (James Cagney) while stationed in the South Pacific during World War II.

“12 Angry Men” (1957) Also serving as producer, Fonda mounted a classic by turning a television play into a movie vehicle for an outstanding ensemble cast as the members of a deliberating jury in a murder trial.

Turner Classic Movies shows the film Sunday, Jan. 22.

“The Best Man” (1964) Gore Vidal’s play made a fine screen vehicle for Fonda and Cliff Robertson as highly dissimilar rivals for a political party’s presidential nomination during a very eventful convention.

“Yours, Mine and Ours” (1968) Fonda is pleasingly comfortable in the factinspired comedy about a widow (played by Lucille Ball) and a widower who marry and merge their big broods of children, much to the kids’ displeasure.

“Once Upon a Time in the West” (1968) A notably vicious Fonda, playing a hired killer in the Old West, was a highlight of “Spaghetti Western” director Sergio Leone’s much-admired epic.

“On Golden Pond” (1981) The climax of Fonda’s big-screen career came with his Oscar win for this moving adaptation of Ernest Thompson’s play about a couple in their twilight years, produced by Fonda’s daughter (and co-star) Jane and also marking another Academy Award victory for Katharine Hepburn.

OF ‘1923’ ON PARAMOUNT+

You typically have such an active schedule, did you have to move other projects to fulfill the series commitment of “1923”?

You make choices of what you decide you want to do and what you don’t want to do. I had done a series of quite demanding roles, including (former Israeli Prime Minister) Golda Meir, and it was time to do something different. This was nothing I had done before, it was quintessentially American, and I just thought it would be a great adventure. And it has been.

You’ve come to “1923” after receiving more accolades including the Screen Actors Guild’s Life Achievement Award. Is it safe to assume that this has been a satisfying period for you?

Of course, but honestly, the real benefit is the playing of a scene and feeling that it worked. The other stuff is lovely, but it is absolutely peripheral. The exciting thing is sharing a space with wonderful actors and feeling that you’re telling a story well. That’s really all we want to do.

You’re working with one Taylor now, “1923” creator and executive producer Taylor Sheridan, but you’re married to another ... movie director Taylor Hackford. Why do you think his films have held up over time?

He always has given great roles to women. If you look at the way the female characters are treated in all of his films, they’re strong, complex and really interesting.

Also, his movies are very diverse. In “An Officer and a Gentleman,” the sergeant originally was written for a white actor and Taylor said, “No, I want a Black actor for that role.” And (Louis Gossett Jr.) won an Oscar for it.

“Not Dead Yet” (ABC — series premiere, Feb. 8) Nell Stevens (Gina Rodriguez) is a broke and newly single self-described disaster, working to restart the life and career she left behind five years ago. When she lands the only job she can find — writing obituaries — Nell starts getting life advice from a very unlikely source in this new drama series premiere, adapted from the book “Confessions of a 40-something F...
