season can mean good news for certain series.

Networks often decide to give extra postgame airings to shows they want to boost ... and on Sunday, Jan. 29, CBS’ “Fire Country” receives such treatment, as the Max Thieriot-starring drama gets a showcase outside its usual Friday slot, following the AFC Championship contest. In the new story, a plane crash sparks a blaze that Bode Donovan (Thieriot) and other firefighting volunteers among Northern California prison inmates unite to battle.

Thieriot recently ended his connection to “SEAL Team” with the death of his character on that show, now seen on Paramount+, so he’s now exclusive to “Fire Country”

CoVer sTory

— something that could have been foreseen, since he’s also a creator and executive producer of the latter series. He claimed at the start of the television season that he had the energy to keep doing both programs, but his larger commitment clearly was to the latter one.

Having based “Fire Country” (which already has been renewed for a second season) on his own experiences growing up in the Sonoma County region that the show concerns, Thieriot reflects, “I’d say the stuff that’s kind of most memorable right now is the stuff that’s really occurred in the past few years ... obviously, a large portion of the Santa Rosa being destroyed, Coffey Park and all those neighborhoods, all the lives that were tragically lost. It was a really,

really devastating fire, so I think that one probably has the biggest impact on me emotionally.”

Additional “Fire Country” stars include Diane Farr, Billy Burke, Jordan Calloway, Kevin Alejandro (who also directed a recent episode), Jules Latimer, Stephanie Arcila and W. Tre Davis. For viewers who may not have seen the show yet — one aim of the afterfootball scheduling being to draw more viewers to it — executive producer Tony Phelan says they shouldn’t worry about not being able to get up to speed quickly. “We conceived of it as having some serialized elements,” he allows, “but I think it will be easy for the audience to come in if they if they have missed some

episodes. There are obviously fire events, rescue events. Our firefighters battle wildfires from the Oregon border all the way down to Mexico. They also do water rescue; there’s all sorts of stories to tell. And we’ve got quite a few mysteries at the center of our town.”

Thieriot confirms that giving the fictional characters of “Fire Country” is fulfilling his goal to give their reallife counterparts weekly TV attention. “They do these amazing incredible heroic rescues,” he notes, “and they’re constantly saving the world (within their immediate area), but I think they’re just also really kindhearted people. That’s something that’s important in the world today in general.”

Jaquez Jr. leading Bruins’ push to the Final Four

From role player as a freshman to John Wooden Award candidate as a senior, Jaime Jaquez Jr. has stepped up to become a leader of his UCLA Bruins squad.

Indeed, the product of Camarillo (Calif.) High School has transformed himself from low four-star recruit to one of the nation’s best players on a team with designs on a national championship.

Through early January, Jaquez was averaging a career-high 17.2 points per game to go with 6.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.7 steals. He’s also greatly improved as a shooter, connecting on 53.5 percent of his attempts, up from his previous career-best of 48.6 percent in his sophomore year of 2020-21. And he’s taking fewer shots from three-point range, instead opting for shooting efficiency from closer in. But what makes the 21-year-old swingman such a threat is his 6-feet-7 inch, 225 pound size, which creates match-up problems for other teams, and the wide range of moves he can put on his opponents, as he uses fakes and up-and-under moves to break down defenders. And though he may not be the quickest player on the court, he makes up for that with smarts, patience and knowledge of his own strengths. With the Bruins ranked in the top 10 in the nation and leading the Pac-12 standings, Jaquez will be integral to the Bruins’ push to make it to the other side of March Madness. He and UCLA can be seen in action when they play host to the conference rival Washington Huskies in a game airing Thursday, Feb. 2, on FS1.

BEST JON VOIGHT MOVIES

“Midnight Cowboy” (1969) Well, of oight had done television and stage work, but there was no question that the screen arrival of hustler Joe Buck also marked the arrival of a major new star.

“Deliverance” (1972) Along with Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty and Ronny Cox, Voight made viewers think twice about taking camping trips for a while. And possibly still does. The film version of James Dickey’s novel leads off a night of Voight films Friday, rner Classic Movies.

“Conrack” (1974) A heartfelt Voight performance fuels this fine account of novelist (“The Prince of Tides”) days as a teacher in the South.

“Coming Home” (1978) A richly deserved Oscar went to Voight as a heelchair-bound, war-opposing veteran

who becomes involved with the wife (fellow Academy Award winner Jane Fonda) of another military man (Bruce Dern).

“Runaway Train” (1985) To witness an actor’s complete dedication to a role, watch Voight as an escaped convict who refuses to back down in his quest for independence, even when he’s trapped with others aboard the title vehicle.

“Heat” (1995) Voight’s scenes as a lowkeyed facilitator of a master felon’s (Robert De Niro) crimes are among the best in this superbly sprawling saga.

“Mission: Impossible” (1996) This update of the classic TV series is best-known as a Tom Cruise vehicle, but Voight does a marvelous job of redefining IMF leader Jim Phelps, both in playing him traditionally and in adding twists.

“Anaconda” (1997) He may chew all of the scenery when the giant reptile isn’t chewing on him, but boy, is Voight fun as this piece’s villain.

“Varsity Blues” (1999) If you’re a school athlete, you don’t want a coach as heartless and manipulative as the one played by Voight ... which actually is a tribute to the effectiveness of the performance.

“Ali” (2001) He certainly gets a big assist from the makeup department, but it also takes Voight’s typically committed acting to flesh out the image of sportscasting icon Howard Cosell.

“Getaway” (2013) As a whole, this is far from a great movie – but as a showcase for Voight’s distinctive voice, as the unseen mystery man who forces hard-driving Ethan Hawke through his paces, it’s top-notch.

‘NIGHT COURT’ ON NBC

As you return to the role of Dan Fielding in the new revival of “Night Court,” do you feel the new cast is coming together as the original one did?

It takes a while. You stumble about for a while. Someone – it might have been (veteran TV comedy director) Jimmy Burrows – once told me, “When you do a new sitcom, you basically do the pilot 13 times.” People really become confident in their assumptions about the characters, so the first batch of episodes is getting to know them over and over again. And the stories intertwine them.

Were you able to talk with anyone else associated with the first “Night Court” about revisiting it?

Markie (the late actress Markie Post) and I actually had talked about this. I contacted her when it was offered, and I was thinking, “This is not a good idea. I can’t be the physical comic that I was; I can’t jump off tables anymore.” And she said, “No, you’ve got to do this. You have to find out what happened, where Dan’s life went.” And I helped to sort of create his journey.

Are you satisfied with how that journey turns out?

Yes, I would say that it’s interesting. We find out that he’s a widower; he had a great love in his life, so whatever shenanigans he was up to as a young man were put aside when he found someone who truly loved him.

The people who are writing this are not that familiar or steeped in the mechanisms of four-camera comedy. The audience has a lot to do with the timing, and it’s a different style of writing and a different kind of acting. You have to be aware of the audience, and it’s like being on a stage doing a play. You have to go for the laughs, and you can’t trample over them. There’s a lot to learn about it, and I’ve done it a lot.

GOD, WHO SPOKE IN TIMES PAST BY THE PROPHETS, HAS IN THESE LAST DAYS SPOKEN TO US BY HIS SON. FOR HE WHOM GOD HAS SENT SPEAKS THE WORDS OF GOD.
