“Magnum P.I.” rose from the television ashes once before, and now, the show is doing it again.

The Hawaii-based detective series that made Tom Selleck a star had a second life on CBS, in a reboot that put Jay Hernandez in the title role. That version lasted four years on that network, and its cancellation was met with an outcry by fans ... who then got a reprieve when NBC picked up the drama for two 10-episode runs. The first of those begins Sunday, Feb. 19, as Magnum and his personal and professional partner Juliet Higgins (Perdita Weeks) search for a woman who was with a married-to-someone-else man when he died in a car accident.

“It was incredibly humbling, the outpouring of support,” executive producer Eric Guggenheim reflects of the fan base that has kept “Magnum P.I.” going. “I mean, there was a billboard in (New York’s) Times Square! Jay and I were both saying that we couldn’t believe it. We knew we had a loyal audience, but the way they rallied was just so moving. We really owe it to the fans to deliver for them. They did their part in helping to rescue the show.”

In that spirit, Guggenheim — who also was an executive producer of the CBS reboot of “Hawaii Five-0” — promises more of the “Magnum” mix of “humor and mystery and a little bit of action. I will say that I think this (fifth) season is prob-

ably the most emotional one we’ve done. It’s also probably the most serialized.” Indeed, a continuing plot involves the former military commander (played by returnee James Remar) of Magnum and his pals Rick and TC (Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill); also, former police detective Gordon Katsumoto (Tim Kang) seeks reinstatement.

The new police foil for Magnum is Chris Childs, played by Michael Rady (“Chicago Med”).

“He’s very different than Katsumoto,” Guggenheim explains.

“He’s cockier and he’s more willing to break the rules, and he just adds this new element that’s so great for us.”

Arguably the biggest development, though, is the

romance between Magnum and Higgins — which they try to keep to themselves, at least initially. “Things are certainly more complicated than ever between them,” Guggenheim acknowledges. “These two characters are opposites in so many ways that no matter what we do with them moving forward, we’re always going to have that sort of friction between them.”

While well into production on the new “Magnum” stories, Guggenheim admits, “Even now, I’m like, ‘Wow. Did we really cheat death? Are we really back?’ Any time you get renewed, you feel kind of blessed, but this is really special. It makes all of us appreciate each other and the show even more.”

Cindric primed for a repeat at Daytona

To say that the 2022 NASCAR Cup season was an eventful one for Austin Cindric would be an understatement.

It began in impressive fashion at the Daytona 500. Making making only his eighth Cup start, the new driver of the No. 2 Penske Ford ran with the leaders most of the day and led the final eight laps, before holding off Bubba Wallace at the finish line for the win. In the ensuing celebration, the rookie shredded a tire and broke his starter while doing a burnout and had to be pushed to Victory Lane.

But his triumph was significant in a number of ways. At 23, he became the second-youngest driver (behind 20-year-old Trevor Bayne in 2011) to win the “Great American Race” and the ninth to take his first Cup victory in the February season opener.

And while it turned out to be his only win of 2022, it was not the end of his successes. He would go on to win the pole the following week at Auto Club Speedway and finish 12th in that race, putting him in the series points lead and making him just the second rookie (after Jimmie Johnson in 2002) to lead the points standings in consecutive weeks. On the season, he’d finish 12th in points and qualify for the playoffs but was eliminated in the Round of 12. Rookie of the Year honors would follow. BEST AL PACINO MOVIES

“The Godfather” (1972) Well, of course. He’d made a couple of movies earlier, but this is where things really got rolling for Pacino, with his iconic portrayal of underworld boss-in-training Michael Corleone (which came to fruition with the superb first sequel, then coasted along in the less-stellar second sequel).

“Serpico” (1973) The Pacino mix of vulnerability and inner resolve took a leap forward director Sidney Lumet’s fine portrait of a ork cop who exposed police corruption.

“Dog Day Afternoon” (1975) “Attica! orking again under Lumet’s direction, Pacino is galvanizing as a wouldbe bank robber with a very specific reason for wanting the cash. Turner Classic Movies shows the film Wednesday, Feb. 22.

“Scarface” (1983) It borders on caricature, but Pacino’s performance as battling-bantam gangster Tony Montana

stays real enough to have endured as one of the actor’s best-known characters.

“Glengarry Glen Ross” (1992) As part of a terrific ensemble cast, Pacino details drama at a real-estate office in this film of David Mamet’s play.

“Scent of a Woman” (1992) “Hooah!” Pacino finally became an Oscar winner as a blind military veteran who figuratively sees many things clearer than his young companion (Chris O’Donnell).

“Carlito’s Way” (1993) Continuing his connection to crime stories in this Brian De Palma-directed film, Pacino plays an ex-convict whose post-prison effort to go straight meets with challenges.

“Heat” (1995) Pacino and Robert De Niro didn’t share scenes in “The Godfather, Part II,” but they rectified that with great tandem moments in director Michael Mann’s sizzling crime drama.

“Donnie Brasco” (1997) In a great character-actor turn, Pacino plays an informant for the title character, an undercover FBI operative (portrayed by Johnny Depp).

“The Insider” (1999) Filmmaker Mann hired Pacino again for the true story of former “60 Minutes” producer Lowell Bergman’s (Pacino) championing of tobacco industry whistle-blower Jeffrey Wigand (Russell Crowe).

“Any Given Sunday” (1999) Pacino is typically, thoroughly believable as a been-there, done-that pro football coach in director Oliver Stone’s all-star take on the ins and outs of the game.

“Insomnia” (2002) Pacino does underrated work opposite fellow Oscar winners Robin Williams and Hilary Swank in the tale of a Los Angeles police detective who has a hard time adjusting to Alaska while probing a murder there.

Is it sad saying goodbye to Eddie?

Of course, it’s very sad saying goodbye to Eddie. It’s a rare thing for a show, any type of show, to last for five years. But even more so, a sort of serialized drama that doesn’t have a case of the week or a fire to put out every episode. And it’s just stories about people loving their lives. And to the best of your ability, you become this character and try to empathize as much as possible. ... And I will miss him dearly.

What was your favorite part about playing this character?

When I was reading the pilot, I thought it was excellent and I really wanted to do it and I really wanted to be the part of Gary (laughs). And I remember my wife (Elizabeth Tulloch, “Superman & Lois”) was reading all of these scripts (and) came to me like, “This is a great script. There are so many good parts in this. I think like Gary would be awesome for you to play.” ... And I mean, I’m so lucky to have been given a part on this

But when I was reading the pilot, Gary (the character played by James Roday Rodriguez) was really likable, Rome (Romany Malco) was really likable and then there was this character Eddie, who was just fairly despicable from the audience’s point of view. And I was offered that role and I just thought it would be so fun to play, especially having come off of a six-year series called “Grimm” where I played the hero and really not very flawed guy and always seeking the best and, you know, written to be the hero. So I thought it would be really fun to play Eddie, who was clearly going to be hard to like, and I kind of reveled in that a little bit.
