By Jay Bobbin With each appearance she’s made at the annual “CMA Fest,” Lauren Alaina has marked another career milestone.Thispast June, when the Country Music Association staged the Nashville event at which fans can get up-close to stars, the “American Idol” alum had a whopper of an accolade to celebrate: It was Alaina’s first time at the festival as a member of the Grand Ole Opry, to which she was inducted in February. ABC broadcasts its traditional threehour digest of the four-day gathering Wednesday, Aug. 3, with Dierks Bentley and Elle King as hosts. At several different venues during that weekend, Alaina — who is doing much concert touring this summer — performed tunes from her latest album, the top-selling “Sitting Pretty on Top of the World” (which she also cowrote most of). She says with her customary laugh, “I was all over the place! I always love ‘CMA Fest.’ All artists owe their careers to the fans, because we create art and they listen to it, which enables us to write and release more music. It all comes back to them. “Specifically for me, I came into this career because the fans voted me into it (on ‘American Idol’),” adds Alaina, “so I have always had this deep level of appreciation and gratitude for my fans, and I feel like ‘CMA Fest’ is the perfect way to celebrate that. BY GEORGE DICKIE With each game, Austin Riley’s case for National League MVP becomes more and more compelling. Indeed, in their All-Star third baseman, the Atlanta Braves have a young slugger in the midst of another career year on a team looking to win its fifth consecutive NL East title and second straight world championship. As of late July, the 25-year-old Mississippi product was batting .294 with 28 home runs, 64 RBI, an on-base percentage of .356 and an OPS of .945. He was especially hot in July with an 18-game hitting streak during which he hit .444 with eight homers, 16 RBIs and a 1.383 OPS. Such hitting prowess has gotten the attention of opposing pitchers, who puzzle over how to pitch him. “He kills fastballs,” Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Patrick Sandoval said after surrendering two hits to Riley in a late July game. “I heard ... that he has the hardest exit velo against breaking balls, too. So it’s tough. You have to execute.” Nearly snubbed for the All-Star Game, Riley was chosen as a reserve on the NL team, a similar fate suffered by another Atlanta third baseman, Chipper Jones, in 1999. That year, the Braves great went on to win the MVP award. Along with fellow MVP candidates Dansby Swanson and Matt Olson, he’s part of a formidable middle of the order for Atlanta, one that will need to be hitting on all cylinders if they are to win the East and make another World Series run. Riley and the Braves can be seen in action Saturday, Aug. 27, when they continue a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals in a regional game airing on Fox.

It’s part of Turner Classic Movies’ all-day “Summer Under the Stars” tribute to Monroe on Saturday, Aug. 27. “All About Eve” (1950) While Monroe isn’t a major player in this classic backstage drama, it still ranks as one of the best films she was in. “Monkey Business” (1952) A potion that makes people act considerably younger fuels this Howard Hawks-directed comedy that had Monroe working with two other screen icons, Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers. “Niagara” (1953) The title falls provides the memorable backdrop to this melodrama about a larcenous newlywed (Monroe). “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” (1953) As Lorelei Lee, a singer on a cruise ship bound for Paris, Monroe is a blonde who certainly is preferred in the musical-comedy in which she popularized the tune “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend.” “How to Marry a Millionaire” (1953) Monroe, Betty Grable and Lauren Bacall play models intent on landing rich husbands in this classic comedy. “River of No Return” (1954) A harrowing raft trip, with Monroe on board, is a highlight of this Otto Preminger-directed melodrama. “The Seven Year Itch” (1955) Street grate. Billowing skirt. Eternally iconic image. ‘Nuff said. “Bus Stop” (1956) Monroe had one of her most challenging roles as a singer who becomes the obsession of a rodeo rider (Don Murray). “Some Like It Hot” (1959) As Sugar Kane, the comely cohort of two disguised musicians on the run (Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis), Monroe is a major factor in director Billy Wilder’s legendary comedy. “The Misfits” (1961) Written by Arthur Miller, her husband at the time of the drama’s filming, Monroe’s last completed film –reuniting her with director John Huston –casts her and Clark Gable as a romantically involved couple with different takes on the treatment of wild horses.

What did this house need? It’s deeded 1904 but we believe it was built more around 1890. But it was simply a cottage. It was on a crawl space so when we got it, there was no plumbing that was working, there was no electrical that was working and the crawl space, the foundation, was actually crumbling so the house was kind of leaning over. Yeah, it’s a little hometown of mine, was a resort per se for people from Detroit, so you used to take a train out. So all the houses were just these little, tiny ramshackle cottages that had no insulation, no indoor plumbing or anything. So the island that this particular cottage is on at one time had this grand hotel and you had to take a canoe over to get to your house because there were no roads, so it was very romantic. And then obviously over the years, it actually became a town and with the suburban flight everyone moved out there and they tore down all the old cottages. So there’s only maybe a dozen of the original cottages left and this was one of them. So when it came up for sale I didn’t necessarily need it but I knew that if I didn’t take it that somebody would tear it down, and it was just so magical to me.
