Hilary Swank is reporting for duty for her return to series television.

After limited runs in the Netflix space saga “Away” and the true FX drama “Trust” in recent years, the two-time Oscar winner (for “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Million Dollar Baby”) is committed to a potentially longer stay as a journalist who tries to salvage her career by moving from New York to Anchorage as ABC’s “Alaska Daily” premieres Thursday, Oct. 6.

Also featuring Jeff Perry (“Scandal”) and Matt Malloy (“I Love That for You”), the show was created by executive producer Tom McCarthy, an Oscar recipient for co-writing

another newspaper drama: “Spotlight,” which won the Academy Award for best picture of 2015.

“It’s an interesting medium to work in when you’re used to working in films, where you have a lot of tweaks made in advance,” says the friendly Swank, whose early TV history included a “Beverly Hills, 90210” stint. She notes that lately, “I liked doing a semi-long-form project more than I thought I would. I had found that for me, TV was almost claustrophobic because you play a character for so long, but you also have the opportunity to play gradations of what your character is going through. And that is a nice challenge.”

Swank describes her new character Eileen Fitzgerald, who enters the Alaska scene by tackling a cold case, as being “very into details. For her, being a journalist is about finding the truth and putting that out for people to discover for themselves. I think that’s something that people are really wanting right now in general, not opinions, but just going back to good journalism where you’re trying to get to the bottom of things. That’s (Eileen’s) sole objective, and she loves it.”

McCarthy was “the draw for me to step into this,” Swank notes ... not only because of “Spotlight,” but also his earlier film “The Station Agent,” which she says “blew me away. He brings a nice levity to his work,

and I think this type of material really shows that.”

Though “Alaska Daily” largely is being filmed in British Columbia — as was Swank’s Alaska-set 2002 movie “Insomnia” — she reports that one episode does take her and her colleagues deep into Alaska itself.

“We’re actually able to explore some of the Great North, which is really awesome,” she enthuses. “What’s funny is that my husband just turned 50, and it was on his bucket list to go to Alaska, so we went to a very remote area with no phone service that you had to take a seaplane to the middle of nowhere to get to. I called that my prep work for the series.”

Once it has been in an insect’s body for nine days, it has complete control over the host’s movements. According to National Geographic, it forces the ant to climb trees, then convulse and fall into the cool, moist soil below, where fungi thrive. Once there, the fungus waits until exactly solar noon to force the ant to bite a leaf and wait for death.

Jefferson looks to set records in Minnesota

There’s a new coach and a new offensive scheme in Minnesota. And if one player stands to benefit, it will be Justin Jefferson.

Indeed, in their third year wide receiver, the Vikings have a talented pass catcher who has taken the league by storm in his first two seasons and figures to set a few records if he continues his trajectory.

Entering this season, the Vikings’ first round draft pick out of LSU in 2020 is the only player to amass over 3,000 yards in his first two NFL campaigns, tallying 1,400 his rookie year and 1,616 in 2021. If he can add another 1,148 to his total, he would eclipse the three-year mark of 4,163 set by Vikings legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Randy Moss in 1998-2000.

That seems almost like a fait accompli given Jefferson’s ability to beat defenders with his size, speed, hands and route-running abilities as well as his sympatico with Vikes quarterback Kirk Cousins. He also has a new head coach in former Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, under whose three receiver scheme Cooper Kupp

“Interview With the Vampire” on AMC (Words in parentheses not in puzzle) Journalist (Anne) Rice

How is it for you to reprise your “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” role of Catherine Willows among a new group of actors on “CSI: Vegas”?

It’s always fun to be around younger energy and new ideas. Certainly, they’re a lot more adept at technology than I am ... or ever will be! I really feel respected (by the show’s other stars) for my 40-year career, and that’s something I appreciate.

Is it meaningful to you that original “CSI” creator Anthony E. Zuiker is still involved with the franchise as an executive producer?

He actually wrote an episode (of “CSI: Vegas”) for me that involves my (character’s) daughter, and that was a great experience. Anthony left “CSI” when the “NY” spinoff launched, and he was sort of working on the “Miami” spinoff, but he wasn’t around our show as much after Season 2 from what I remember.

With this episode, he was there every day, sort of co-directing. He had such a specific vision for this, and it was fun, though it was hard work. I felt that both of us had matured to the point where we were much more open to making things tighter or whatever. With almost every take, we were fine-tuning it. The give-and-take was exciting.

It seems like work has stayed pretty consistent for you ever since your Primetime Emmy-winning run on “China Beach.” Does that surprise you?

This year has been like whiplash, between “CSI. Vegas” and “All Rise” (which OWN picked up after CBS canceled it). I lost people, and I got married, and I had a grandbaby. And to be working a lot on top of that, it’s been one for the record books.
