To play a famous set of twins, it takes another set of twins, at least in the case of “High School.”
Platinum recording artists Tegan and Sara Quin wrote a bestselling coming-of-age memoir now adapted into a Freevee series that begins streaming with four episodes Friday, Oct. 14 (with the four remaining episodes then debuting over the consequent two Fridays). Premiered at last month’s Toronto International Film Festival, the show casts Railey and Seazynn Gilliland as the teenage Tegan and Sara, with Cobie Smulders (“How I Met Your Mother”) and Kyle Bornheimer (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) as their parents.
“It’s very surreal, very nerve-wracking,” the real Tegan says of dramatizing her and Sara’s lives. “We’re definitely preparing our family and friends for this next part of the journey. When we wrote our memoir a few years ago, we set out to do something that we thought was really important ... which was to tell a story about queer women, and specifically about music and coming out and adolescence, in a way that was really smart and intelligent.”
Tegan credits actress Clea DuVall — a “High School” executive producer, writer and director — with making the Quin twins comfortable with translating “High School” to film: “Clea and Sara and
I have been friends for a long time, and when she approached us about turning the memoir into a TV show, Sara and I just felt reassured right away that somebody who cared about us and our family and friends was at the helm.”
Railey Gilliland maintains making the series “wasn’t easy in the slightest, but getting to hang out with Tegan and Sara and getting to know them made that just slightly easier. Their stories are relatable to Seazynn and me. And we just had a lot of fun.”
Adds Seazynn Gilliland, “I think that there was a responsibility, but it was only the best kind of responsibility. I’ve never seen anything like this on screen before. When I was 15 myself, I would have loved
to see something like this. I think it’s really important to show, and I was able to be the one to show that. So that was nice.”
Despite the success she and Tegan have enjoyed, Sara Quin says of early tunes they wrote and performed, “We had decided that all of the music was bad. It’s actually been the support of people around us who’ve reassured us that the music is strong enough to be a focal point on the show. I think it just sort of shows that young people can do amazing things, right even out of the gate before they’ve had years of training and experience. Sometimes, our first instinct is our best instinct.”

BY GEORGE DICKIEIt’s been three seasons since Saquon Barkley last played with confidence. And if his Week 1 showing is any indication, it’s well justified.
Indeed, the New York Giants’ star running back had a tough row to hoe in 2020 and 2021 after bursting onto the NFL scene in 2018 with a franchise rookie record 1,307 yards in 2018 and following that up with a 1,003-yard season in 2019.
But in Week 2 of 2020, the Giants’ 2018 first round pick out of Penn State grabbed the back of his knee after being hauled down on a running play and was immediately carted off the field. The diagnosis – a torn ACL, the type of injury no runner wants.
He missed the remainder of that year and returned in 2021 a mere shell of himself. Not confident in the repaired knee and also hampered by an ankle injury, Barkley ran for only 563 yards in 13 games before being placed in the NFL’s COVID-19 protocol.
But in training camp of 2022, he showed up a different player.
catching the attention of his teammates and coaches. So when he

passes
one around the team was surprised.

“Brian’s Song” (TV, 1971) After years of reliable supporting work, Caan began to step into stardom as Brian Piccolo, the Chicago Bears running back whose illness cemented his friendship with teammate Gale Sayers (Billy Dee Williams).
“The Godfather” (1972) Well, of course. Who can forget hotheaded mob son Sonny Corleone’s exit? No spoilers here, but if you haven’t seen this truly iconic film yet, do so.
Now
“Slither” (1973) Caan is amusing as a paroled thief whose intention to go straight doesn’t last very long. Turner Classic Movies shows the film Wednesday, Oct. 12.
“Cinderella Liberty” (1973) In his first teaming with Marsha Mason, Caan gives a wonderfully sensitive performance as a Navy man involved with a prostitute while he’s on forced leave.
“The Gambler” (1974) This excellent character study casts Caan as a college professor who has a gambling addiction.
“Freebie and the Bean” (1974) Caan and Alan Arkin display terrific teamwork as San Francisco police partners trying to keep a mob boss from being targeted in a hit.
“Rollerball” (1975) As a very physical athlete of few words, Caan is ideal casting as Jonathan E., the bigger-than-he-was-meantto-be star of a futuristic sport.
“The Killer Elite” (1975) Reteamed (by director Sam Peckinpah) with “Godfather” co-star Robert Duvall, Caan is terrific as a betrayed private-security man out for revenge.
“Chapter Two” (1979) Reuniting with actress Mason, Caan has a tough job –playing morose, and also essentially playing Mason’s husband at the time, playwright Neil Simon – and fulfills it extremely well.
“Hide in Plain Sight” (1980) Caan works both sides of the camera effectively directing as well as starring in the true stor y of a man trying to locate his ex-wife and children.
Thief” (1981) Helping director Michael Mann establish the style he’s so known for now, Caan is top-notch as the title crook out for one last, giant score.
“Gardens of Stone” (1987) Teamed again with director Coppola, Caan is excellent in this underrated drama about an Army sergeant looking out for untested soldiers on their way to the Vietnam War “Alien Nation” (1988) Caan and Mandy Patinkin make highly interesting co-stars as a policeman and his alien partner
“Misery” (1990) Kathy Bates may have the showier role (which her Oscar win confirmed) as a novelist’s obsessed fan, but without Caan’s work as her victim, the Stephen King story wouldn’t have the balance it needs.
“Honeymoon in Vegas” (1992) Caan’s personality is perfect for the gambler who orchestrates a weekend with an the fiancee (Sarah Jessica Parker) of an opponent (Nicolas Cage).

“Alaska Daily” brings you back to television in a period when you seem to be doing more work there, especially in limited series. Was that the plan for you?
I go where the good stories are, just like a journalist. I follow great stories with great parts, and if I want to tell them, it doesn’t matter where they’re told ... just that they get told. I’m really grateful to the people who give these stories homes, and I keep trying to honor that.
Did you know the movie work of “Alaska Daily” creator and executive producer Tom McCarthy, who won an Oscar for co-writing “Spotlight,” before signing up for the series?
Oh, sure. It was the draw for me to step into this. “The Station Agent,” I loved that movie; it was super-unique and ahead of its time, and I like the mix of quirky drama and levity that he brings to his work.
I asked him what his goal was for making this show, and one of them was the importance of showing good journalism ... and of showing what the plight of a journalist is now. There’s such sensationalism out there, it’s easy to flip through things and just get quick snippets, but where’s the whole thing? It’s an interesting time for that profession.
Though you’ve made movies set in Alaska, you hadn’t actually been there before starting “Alaska Daily.” Did you have a concept of the state?
It was very different than I imagined. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, so I had evergreens around me as far as the eye could see ... and I imagined that was what Alaska looked like, just with more depth, but it doesn’t. It does look like another planet, like a tundra, nothing I’d ever seen before.
