Following her awardhonored run in “black-ish,” Tracee Ellis Ross is getting to the roots of another matter.

The actress turns interviewer as the host and an executive producer of “The Hair Tales,” a series from the relatively new Onyx Collective initiative that makes its debut Saturday, Oct. 22, on both Hulu and OWN. An executive producer of the show with others including Oprah Winfrey and author Michaela angela Davis, Ross talks with such notables as Winfrey, Issa Rae and Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) and Ross’ fellow “black-ish” alum Marsai Martin about their hair experiences and how

those have impacted their connections to Black culture and society. (Pressley lost her hair to the condition alopecia areata.)

“I feel like I, like so many others, can chronicle my journey of self-acceptance through my journey with my hair,” Ross explains. “I don’t think it was until I was a teenager that I started to face my own personal journey with my experience with my hair, not seeing myself mirrored back to me through culture, through media, through newscasters ... anyone. I saw it at home (with Ross’ mother, iconic singer-actress Diana Ross), but I didn’t see it out in the world.

“At the time, I took that personally, and really sort

of put on my own self that I wasn’t enough. I wasn’t correct. As I’ve gotten older, my own sort of realization about myself was that I was one of many. I was part of a vast community, a culture of people who also weren’t seeing themselves, and it played into the larger story historically, about how black people have been seen in this country, and how the culture of beauty and the industry of beauty has not necessarily mirrored back the reality of the power and the beauty of who we are.”

Fellow “The Hair Tales” executive producer Davis says, “Often, Black women’s hair and Black women’s existence is positioned like a challenge or a problem that we

have to solve. We’re talking about it in the layered way in which we live, so there’s joy, there’s resilience, there’s history, there’s memory, there’s hysteria, there’s ancestry. We’re getting at all of it, and that’s the beauty of it. When we get to tell our own stories, we get to tell them inside the complexity in which we actually live.”

Indeed, Ross emphasizes, “We are using, in this show, hair as an entrance — as an on-ramp into our souls, to explore the largeness of our humanity. I hope that ‘The Hair Tales’ really offers a new definition that beauty is a reflection of self, the imprint of the soul, instead of an idea that is concocted from history and systemic limitations.”

Yes, there was a real John Chapman who planted thousands of apple trees on U.S. soil. But the apples on those trees were much more bitter than the ones you’d find in the supermarket today. “Johnny Appleseed” didn’t expect his fruits to be eaten whole but rather made into hard apple cider.

Simmons (“The Closer”) won an Oscar as best supporting actor — as well as a slew of other awards for writer-director Damien Chazelle’s intense, characterdriven 2014 drama, which examines the combative relationship between a music student (Miles Teller) and a relentlessly demanding professor (Simmons). Brogdon hopes to be on point with Celtics

On a team that made the NBA Finals last season, Malcolm Brogdon could be the final piece that puts the Boston Celtics over the top.

Acquired in a July trade with the Indiana Pacers, the 2017 NBA Rookie of the Year is the type of point guard who is a solid passer, ball handler and defender, finishes well at the rim and commits few turnovers. Over the last two seasons, he’s one of a handful of players who averaged at least 18 points, five rebounds and five assists. Last year, his numbers were 19.1, 5.1 and 5.9.

He considers himself a point guard first and over his career he has proven himself to be a guy who can take care of the ball and lead a team on the court. But in Boston, he’ll join a backcourt rotation with Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart and Derrick White, thus forcing him to play shooting guard more often.

He did that with the Milwaukee Bucks in the first three years of his NBA career and toward the end of his three-year tenure with the Pacers but it was not his desired role. He’d rather be the guy who gets his teammates involved, who competes on both ends of the court, rather than the shooter. He wants to be a leader and a winner.

He’ll certainly get that chance in Boston, which is where Brogdon and the Celtics will tip off the 202223 season against the Philadelphia 76ers in the opener of a doubleheader airing Tuesday, Oct. 18, from TD Garden on TNT.

BEST JACK LEMMON MOVIES

Mister Roberts” (1955) Jack Lemmon earned his first Oscar as Ensign Pulver, friend to fellow officer Roberts (Henry Fonda) and mutual nemesis of the tyrannical commander (James Cagney) of their World War II vessel in the Pacific.

Some Like It Hot” (1959) The long association of Lemmon and director Billy Wilder began with this classic Depression-era comedy about two murder-witness musicians (Lemmon, Tony Curtis) who disguise themselves within an all-female band to hide from the killers.

Days of Wine and Roses”

This searing adaptation of a television play features unforgettable work by Lemmon and Lee Remick (under director Blake Edwards) as a couple devastated by alcoholism.

The Great Race” (1965) Blake Edwards’ sprawling road-race comedy goes off the tracks in multiple ways, but

it gives Lemmon an opportunity to have great fun as the villain trying to derail the saga’s hero (Tony Curtis, reunited with Lemmon).

The Fortune Cookie” (1966) Another reteaming with Billy Wilder gave Lemmon his first project with Walter Matthau, who earned an Oscar as a shyster lawyer representing his brother-in-law (Lemmon), a television cameraman injured while covering a football game.

The Odd Couple” (1968)

Lemmon and Walter Matthau cemented themselves as a screen comedy team as neatnik Felix and slovenly Oscar in this hit version of Neil Simon’s play.

The Out-of-Towners” (1970)

Lemmon connected with playwright Neil Simon again as he and Sandy Dennis played Midwestern visitors who ran into every problem imaginable while in New York.

The China Syndrome” (1979)

The dramatic skills of Lemmon again got a great workout from his role as a nuclear-plant supervisor determined to expose dangers at the site with help from a TV-news crew (Jane Fonda, Michael Douglas).

“Missing” (1982) In this true stor y, a compelling Lemmon plays a man who goes to Chile and works with his daughter in-law (Sissy Spacek) to find out what happened to his vanished journalist son.

“Glengarry Glen Ross” (1992) Lemmon is heartbreaking as a onceprominent but now-declining real-estate salesman in the film of David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play.

“Grumpy Old Men” (1993)

Lemmon and Walter Matthau still had some hits left in them when they made this comedy about neighbors whose long-standing feud is amped up by their mutual interest in a local newcomer (Ann-Margret).

OF ‘FAMILY LAW’ ON THE CW

Many of your scenes are with Victor Garber, who plays your character ’s estranged father. How is he as a scene partner?

Oh, he’s fabulous. ... He is very generous. He’s always on time. He’s the kind of person that says, you know, if you’re five minutes early you’re late. (Laughs) So he’s always on time, he’s overprepared and he knows everybody’s name and he’s there to work, which I love. There is no diva-ness about Victor Garber. He is there to work and he’s always prepared, so I love that about him, and he makes everybody step up to that. So we all have to show up willing to work and be super-prepared.

He’s also really fun. He’s got a great sense of humor and he’s very sardonic, very sarcastic and self-deprecating and I love all of those things about him. So we all have a similar work ethics around here.

So your relationship is the complete opposite of that of your characters?

Yeah, I feel like all we do is sort of yell at each other on this show. But we’re very tight in real life and he’s become a bit of a mentor to me and I go to him when I have questions and things about how to handle the work of the show and the brunt of the show and being in all day every day. He’s got some really great advice on how to maintain my energy levels and all of that and I feel like he’s quite protective over us and it’s been pretty wonderful to get to know him as well as we have.
