By George Dickie Series co-creator and executive producer Phil Hay calls Season 2 of “The Mysterious Benedict Society” a season of “planes, trains and automobiles” — though with a Golden Age ocean liner and a zeppelin mixed in for good measure.

Premiering Wednesday, Oct. 26, on Disney+ with a pair of episodes, the new round picks up with “The Emergency” ended by the eccentric Mr. Benedict (Tony Hale), a heroic feat for which his less-than-virtuous twin brother L.D. Curtain (also Hale) has taken credit.

But when Benedict and his assistant Number Two (Kristen Schaal) are kidnapped, his young recruits Reynie, Sticky,

Kate and Constance (Mystic Inscho, Seth B. Carr, Emmy DeOliveira, Marta Kessler) head off by land, sea and air on a trek across Europe, piecing together riddles and clues, to save the world from Curtain’s latest nefarious scheme and rescue their lost comrades.

Their journeys on the high seas take them onto the luxury liner the S.S. Shortcut, whose scenes were actually filmed aboard the RMS Queen Mary docked in Long Beach, Calif. The ship becomes a character in the story.

“I don’t know what we would have done if the Queen Mary didn’t happen to be docked in Long Beach,” Hay says with a laugh. “It’s kind of a unique location.”

“It was a dream,” adds co-creator and executive producer Matt Manfredi. “They just don’t make that kind of elegance anymore, like there’s just the one. We really would have probably had to write around it if it wasn’t available because it was rumored to be a very difficult place to shoot. And it was but they really opened it up and made it easy for us — or as easy as it could be.”

Which wasn’t very. In shooting scenes around the ship, including in the engine room and bridge, both men say the crew really earned their money as it was clearly not built for making a TV show. And the youthful actors got a lesson in what luxury travel was like 80 years ago.

As for the older cast, Hale gives his usual tour-de-force in the dual roles of Benedict and Curtain, once again inhabiting two completely different characters who happen to share the same DNA.

“Tony, of course, is so talented and always so prepared and thoughtful in terms of his approach to the scripts and the act and the work,” Manfredi says.

“And there are times when I just kind of forget that it’s one actor. You know, his posture changes, his cadence changes and he looks completely different. So it’s just kind of a joy to watch.”

“Not only are their body types different,” Hay adds, “somehow he turns posture into an absolute character choice.”

By air and by land, Jackson dominating for Ravens

Admittedly it’s a small sample size, but early indications are that Lamar Jackson may be having a year even better than his MVP season of 2019.

Indeed, the Baltimore Ravens quarterback is once again showing opposing defenses no mercy. Through the season’s first three games, the fifth year signal caller is leading the NFL in passer rating with 119, connecting on 56 of 88 passes (a 63.6 completion percentage) for 749 yards and a leagueleading 10 touchdowns against only two interceptions.

And as a runner, he’s arguably been even better, tied for fifth in the league in rushing yards with 243 on only 26 carries for an astounding 9.3 yards per carry. He also has two touchdowns on the ground, giving him 12 total. All-Pro stats, indeed.

But beyond the numbers, he’s made improvements to his game that don’t appear on paper. He’s gotten better at making on-the-fly adjustments when opposing teams blitz and he’s shown an ability to dominate when throwing from the pocket, two supposed weaknesses.

So good has his performance been this season that it’s drawn early comparisons to his MVP campaign of 2019, when he threw for 3,127 yards and league-leading 36 touchdowns and ran for another 1,206 (the alltime record for a QB) and 7.

Of course, that season ended in the Ravens’ first round exit from the postseason, something they hope to improve upon in 2022.

Jackson and the Ravens can be seen in action on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday, Oct. 27, in a game streaming on Prime Video.

“Field of Dreams” (1989) While not the most historically accurate of baseball films – c’mon, Shoeless Joe Jackson batted left-handed and threw righty, not the other way around as Ray Liotta portrayed him –this tale of an Iowa farmer (Kevin Costner) who built a baseball diamond in his cornfield at the urging of a disembodied voice never fails to bring a lump to the throat with the closing scene of Costner’s character playing catch with his long-estranged (and deceased) father.

“A League of Their Own” (1992) The little-known story of the World War II-era AllAmerican Girls Professional Baseball League gets light-hearted but respectful treatment in Penny Marshall’s superb comedy/drama. Outstanding performances come from all around, from Tom Hanks as a besotted,

washed-up star player turned manager to Madonna as the libidinous center fielder and Geena Davis as her team’s star catcher and the film’s central character. And the closing scenes at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, N.Y. – set against the strains of Madonna’s “This Used to Be My Playground” – give the film an added poignancy. “61*” (2001) Director Billy Crystal is a lifelong New York Yankees fan and that certainly showed in this seriocomic historical drama about Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris’ race to break Babe Ruth’s home run record in 1961. In addition to the attention to detail paid to Yankee minutiae (Yogi Berra’s malapropisms, Phil Rizzuto’s tendency to ramble), the film also features the downright spooky resemblances of Thomas Jane and Barry Pepper to Mantle and Maris. And

a few jabs at the opportunistic New York sportswriters of the day didn’t hurt either. “42” (2013) Dashing Indiana Jones as rumpled Brooklyn Dodgers GM Branch Rickey? Well, the artist known as Harrison Ford manages to pull it off in style in this outstanding drama about the challenges faced by Jackie Robinson (played deftly by the late Chadwick Boseman) in breaking baseball’s color barrier in 1947. As the majors’ first African-American player, Robinson had to be strong enough not to fight back against the slings and arrows of racism, a struggle Boseman portrayed superbly – especially in one wrenching scene where an opposing manager repeatedly taunts Robinson with an inflammator y epithet.

Is it true that your parents Max and Helen Rosenthal inspired Frank and Marie Barone from “Everybody Loves Raymond”?

That’s true. A little bit of Ray’s (Romano) dad is in there but a lot of my mom is in there. Now, she didn’t look like that, obviously, but that kind of attitude, you know, that was there. But the part where she was jealous of her daughter-in-law, though, was taken from my father’s mother, who had that attitude towards my mother. So it’s funny when you’re writing, you take from everywhere and you put in traits from wherever you can. I can’t say any of them are carbon copies but I can say that many of the stories on ‘Raymond’ were inspired by them.

Did Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts ever meet them?

Not before we started. You know, when Doris Roberts came in to audition, she auditioned with this “Fruit of the Month Club” scene, which was a scene that I took directly from sending my parents Fruit of the Month Club. And my mother freaked out as if I sent her a box of heads from a murderer.

She said, “What am I going to do with all this fruit?” And I said, “You eat it. You share it with your friends.” “We don’t have that many friends. There’s like 11 pears here.” I said, “Well, another box is coming next month.” She said, “What? More pears?” I said, “No, a different box every month.” She said, “Every month? I can’t talk anymore. There’s too much fruit in the house.” So I put that in the show to demonstrate how crazy Ray’s parents in the show would be and that turned out to be the scene that got us on the air. That’s because it was so specific and so characterdefining and situation-defining of what Ray was going to be up against.

“Yellowstone” (Paramount Network — season premiere, Nov. 13)

It looks like we can expect a time jump with the Season 5 premiere that producers say will “immediately surprise everybody.” Last season ended with Beth (Kelly Reilly) wedding Rip (Cole Hauser) and blackmailing her adopted brother Jamie (Wes Bentley) into murder. But moving ahead might let us know if John (Kevin Costner) made his way to the governor’s mansion. Also, country music singer-songwriter Lainey Wilson joins the cast.
