“Criminal Minds” is back ... but if you ask its stars, it never should have left.
The mystery centering on the cases of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit ended its 15-season CBS run in 2020, and since then, it has remained popular in repeats on cable networks and streaming services. As a result, the show returns with most of its regular cast members when “Criminal Minds: Evolution” begins streaming Thursday, Nov. 24, on Paramount+. CBS also will run the first episode that night. (In Canada, the drama is coming to Disney+, where episodes of the original series are available now.)
The BAU agents have many unsubs (or unknown subjects) to pursue this time, thanks to an enemy, played by recurring guest star Zach Gilford (“Friday Night Lights”) who has utilized the coronavirus pandemic to assemble a network of serial killers. David Rossi and Emily Prentiss (returnees Joe Mantegna and Paget Brewster) again lead the charge against evildoers, with A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler and Adam Rodriguez also reprising their roles. (Matthew Gray Gubler and Daniel Henner haven’t returned for the revival.)
“We never wanted to go away to begin with,” executive producer Erica Messer confirms. “We knew that there were plenty of stories to tell, and that’s one of the things.
You can sort of feel behind the scenes if a show is lagging or, creatively, the scripts aren’t hitting. And because we’re telling stories of good and evil, it’s kind of endless.”
Mantegna, Cook, Tyler and Rodriguez also get to direct on “Criminal Minds: Evolution,” as they did on the first series.
“I’ve always been a defender of the fact that our show gave that realistic aspect to what these real men and women do,” says Mantegna. “Very often, we hear, ‘Don’t you get nightmares?’ or, ‘Doesn’t it disturb you to do this show?’
It doesn’t disturb me at all because when they say ‘Cut,’ that person lying there with the ax in his head pops up and goes over to craft services and gets a sandwich.
“The ones I worry about,” Mantegna adds, “are the real men and women of the FBI and other law enforcement agencies around the world who have to really do this for a living. What I love about our show is that we show it like it is, and I think that’s important.”
Though streaming offers more leeway for adult content and language than broadcast television, Messer notes she’s aware that the “Criminal Minds” fan base includes teenagers, thus she “never wanted us to go into full, like, R-rated extra violence or anything that would suddenly feel like a very different series. You just get to live and breathe in this space, and it can be a disturbing space to live in.”

On a day when America sits down and gives thanks, Buffalo Bills fans have cause to be grateful for their football team and its star quarterback.
Indeed, Josh Allen is at it once again in Western New York, pulling off exploits that at times seem surreal while leading the Bills to the top of the AFC East.
One came in Week 5 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, when less than 90 seconds in he hit wide receiver Gabe Davis on a 98yard touchdown pass, the longest in Bills history and as well as the longest scrimmage TD in the first 90 seconds of a game in NFL history.
But he was far from done. He’d connect with Davis again on a 62-yard TD pass in the second quarter plus two others to Stefon Diggs and Khalil Shakir before finishing the half with 348 yards and four touchdowns. When he was pulled in the fourth quarter in favor of back-up Case Keenum, his final stats were 20 of 31 for 424 yards with the four TDs and one interception in what turned out to be a 38-3 Buffalo rout. Had he stayed in, he might have threatened Norm Van Brocklin’s single-game record of 554 yards set in 1951.
Through five games, Allen is again among the league’s top passers, topping the list in yards (1,651) and touchdowns (14). More importantly, he has the Bills faithful thinking 2022 is the year a Super Bowl title might be theirs.

Do you see a cross pollination between acting and music, where one helps or augments the other?
I think in some ways, yes. Like obviously from what you have to do, they’re very different worlds. You know, I’m coming into acting and they give me a script and they tell me what to wear and I’m taking on the role of something that’s in someone else’s imagination.

What musical artists have inspired you?
Oh man, growing up I listened to a lot of Brian McKnight, Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion. Very soulful singers, some big vocalists, some R&B. And then as I got into high school, it was more like singer/songwriters like Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson. And then at the same time, within all of that I also just grew up listening to the radio and what would come on KISS-FM and things like that. So I’ve been influenced by a lot of different kinds of sounds. And being a vocalist, I have fun kind of playing and singing within several different
Whereas with music, it’s very therapeutic for me and I’m able to tell my stories and my experiences through my songwriting. And then getting to perform that on stage, I think is where I kind of pull a little bit of the sort of acting background for me because I’m very emotive, I guess, where I really like to be able to emote on stage and I kind of feel like I tried to step into the mood of what the song is from a performative standpoint. So I think that’s where a lot of it comes in. Or if I’m writing a song where it might not be fully my experience but let’s say some songs I’ve written about my friends’ experiences, I kind of use techniques that I would use within acting to sort of eventually go to a place where I can write from what seems to be a personal perspective.
