Cover Story Picking up speed: MI-5 agents ramp up in third season of ‘Slow Horses’ By Dana Simpson The phrase “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” may or may not be true, but Apple TV+ has proven that, at least when it comes to horses, even the slowest ones can gain speed. Based on the Slough House book series by English novelist Mick Herron, “Slow Horses” begins its third season with two fresh episodes Friday, Dec. 1, on Apple TV+. The first season of the Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour,” 2017) -led series kicked off on the streamer in April 2022 and made good use of Herron’s first Slough House novel, “Slow Horses,” for which the show’s is named. Season 2 continued the author’s saga, taking its plot details from the literary series’ second book, “Dead Lions.” Now, heading into its third season to be released within a year and a half, the newest instalment will follow the tradition of pulling content chronologically from the novels, this time focusing on Herron’s “Real Tigers,” the third book in the series. follows a group of aging and disgraced MI-5 agents, who all appear to have lived out their usefulness within the high-ranking British espionage organization. As such, the agents have been relegated to another department, “known un-affectionately as Slough House,” where a large part of their job involves sitting behind a desk and pushing papers; a low-stakes operation for agents who have made “career-ending mistakes.” Slough House is headed up by “brilliant but misanthropic leader” Jackson Lamb (Oldman), and also acts as a sort of workplace home to recovering alcoholic Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves, “Luther”); former hactivist Roddy Ho (Christopher Chung, “Waterloo Road”); Louisa Guy (Rosalind Eleazar, “Uncle Vanya,” 2020), assigned to Slough House following a botched tailing job; and River Cartwright (Jack Lowden, “Dunkirk,” 2017), whose desire to redeem himself in the field set the tone for the premiere season. Other agents have come and

gone over the seasons, including Jed Moody (Steven Waddington, “Jamestown”), Struan Loy (Paul Higgins, “Apostle,” 2018), Min Harper (Dustin Demri-Burns, “Cardinal Burns”), Shirley Dander (Aimee Ffon-Edwards, “Peaky Bllnders”), Marcus Longridge (Kadiff Kirwan, “Ths Is Going to Hurt”) and Sidonie “Sid” Baker (Olivia Cooke, “Bates Motel”), the last of whom was a competent MI-5 agent assigned to Slough House for seemingly unknown reasons. Headed into Season 3, many Season 1 and/or 2 characters are expected to return, including Lamb; Cartwright; Ho; Guy and Standish; MI-5 director general and head of operations Diana Taverner (Kristin Scott Thomas, “Gosford Park,” 2001); Cartright’s grandfather, retired intelligence officer David Cartwright (Jonathan Pryce, “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” 2003); and MI-5 agent James “Spider” Webb (Freddie Fox, “Victor Frankenstein,” 2015). Longridge are also scheduled for Season-3 return. In terms of the plot, Apple TV+ notes that the newest season of “Slow Horses” features “a romantic liaison in Istanbul [that] threatens to expose a buried MI-5 secret in London. When Jackson Lamb and his team of misfits are dragged into the fight, they find themselves caught in a conspiracy that threatens the future not just of Slough House but of MI-5 itself.” Some of the best news for fans of the show, however, is that Season 4 is also confirmed. Renewed for back-to-back seasons in June 2022, the Season-4 confirmation could mean a more dramatic end to Season 3, as writers know that the show is definitely returning. Beginning strong with a two-episode premiere, the third season releases episodes weekly until Dec. 29. While the Season 4 release date has yet to be announced, entertainment sites expect it to arrive sometime in 2024.

Mr. Magoo goes full Scrooge for Christmas

Charles Dickens’ classic seasonal story has gotten many screen workouts, but one of the most unique is the animated special “Mr, Magoo’s Christmas Carol,” which Peacock is streaming during the holiday season. Originally televised in 1962, this variation of the tale casts the famously near-sighted Magoo (voiced by Jim Backus, of “Gilligan’s Island” fame) as legendary miser Ebenezer Scrooge … and to its credit, the script stays pretty faithful to the Dickens original while also allowing Scrooge to adopt Magoo’s quirks. Morey Amsterdam and Jack Cassidy also are in the voice cast. and the original songs are by Jule Styne and Bob Merrill, whose Broadway credits included “Funny Girl.” Be forewarned that despite Magoo’s amusing demeanor, some of the moments here give heartstrings a forceful yank; we point specifically to Tiny Tim (voice of Joan Gardner) singing “Alone in the World,” which it might help to make an advance buyout of a whole tissue factory for.

Holiday helpers: Selena Gomez joined by celebrity chefs in new cooking special Have a huge holiday meal upcoming and no idea what to cook? No problem — just ask Selena. The brand-new series special, “Selena+Chef: Home for the Holidays,” is a seasonal cooking extravaganza, premiering Thursday, Nov. 30, on Food Network. This upcoming holiday-centric series is set to feature four weekly, all-new episodes led by global superstar Selena Gomez (“Only Murders in the Building”), who will be joined by her best friend, Raquelle Stevens (“Giving Back Generation”), and some expert celebrity chefs as together, they learn how to prepare perfect holiday meals for visiting friends and family. The network has shared that the season’s guest chefs include Eric Adjepong (“Tournament of Champions”), Alex Guarnaschelli (“Alex Vs. America”), Michael Symon (“Symon’s Dinners Cooking Out”) and Claudette Zepeda (“Top Chef”), offering fans a taste of what’s to come with brief descriptions of each episode. “In ‘Selena + Alex,’” they share, “chef Alex Guarnaschelli and Selena prepare roast beef and ‘Chantilly’ mashed potatoes for a tree-trimming party.” Next: “Michael Symon pops by for a ‘Surf & Turf’ Christmas as he and Selena tackle steaks and lobster” and “chef Claudette Zepeda plans a Mexican feast with a traditional Latin Christmas dish of tamales and a unique twist on a historic salad.” During the final episode — “Selena+Eric” — the group make some resolutions and ring in the new year, as chef Eric Adjepong helps Selena (along with Gomez’s grandparents and younger sister, Gracie) prepare a special brunch, including shrimp & banana

Lamar Jackson looks for another MVP performance against Chargers It’s time for another thrilling NFL Sunday, as the Baltimore Ravens head to the City of Angels for their Week 12 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Sunday, Nov. 26, with the game broadcast live on NBC. It’s been yet another MVP season for the Lamar Jackson, as the Pompano Beach, Florida, native and the Baltimore Ravens have led the AFC North all season long — including outscoring three different teams with a winning record by a combined 10312 while holding teams to an impressive total of 13.8 points per game (as of Nov. 5). And, if the Ravens weren’t scary enough for their opponents, 26-year-old Jackson has been world class straight out of the gates, having already thrown for over 2,000 passing yards and counting, while completing 70.5 per cent of his passes — the highest mark of his career. In his two encounters against the Chargers, Jackson holds a passer rating of 83.0 with 371 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. The last time Baltimore clashed with Los Angeles, the Ravens put on a dominant performance, winning 34-6 and holding the Chargers to 208 total yards and one touchdown, never allowing quarterback Justin Herbert to find his groove, including an interception by then-Ravens safety DeShon Elliot. Overall, the Ravens are 8-6-0 against the Chargers and they’ll look to improve that record this weekend with an explosive offence that’s proven to be a handful for any opposing teams.
