Music has played a big part in Tom Everett Scott’s acting career, and thanks to Dolly Parton, that’s continuing.

Well-known for his first major role, as the drummer for The Wonders, the fictional ‘60s pop group in “That Thing You Do!” — the 1996 movie written and directed by co-star Tom Hanks — Scott plays Parton’s real-life producing partner Sam Haskell in NBC’s new film “Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas” Thursday, Dec. 1. Clearly inspired by Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” the tale finds the country superstar on a journey through her personal past (guided by “Three Wise Mountain Men”) while making

a holiday television special at her Dollywood resort.

“I’ve never played someone who was right there on the set watching me before,” the friendly Scott says, reporting that it ultimately was “a totally positive thing. (Haskell) is the greatest guy. He and I first got to know each other over Zoom, and he could not have been more supportive.”

Jimmy Fallon, Willie Nelson, Billy Ray Cyrus, Jimmie Allen, Zach Williams and Miley Cyrus make guest appearances in the story, which also features “Saturday Night Live” alum Ana Gasteyer. An executive producer of the project as well, Parton keeps it a family affair by also including her young grand-nephew Liam

Rauhoff, who portrays himself, in the cast.

“I have always loved and been a huge fan of Dolly Parton,” Scott maintains, “and I was honored to be able to work with her. She’s everything that everybody wonders and hopes she is, and more. I just had a great experience, and I miss it. I miss my Tennessee ‘family.’ ”

Scott also enjoyed the show-within-a-show concept that “Dolly Parton’s Mountain Magic Christmas” follows.

“The whole ‘putting on a show’ thing is such a big part of being in show business,” he reasons. “Learning the little things Sam goes through, his mannerisms when he’s stressed out, I liked that. Also, with this being about Christmas, you think of things

like ‘White Christmas’ (which also was, in large part, about the making of a TV special).”

While “That Thing You Do!” would seem to be a popular film among those in the music business, Scott still isn’t positive she knew him from that: “It never came up, but she probably knows it, if she knows me and knows that was a big movie for me.”

Besides that picture’s Hanks, Scott has worked with such other icons as Meryl Streep (in “One True Thing”) and Diane Keaton (“Because I Said So”), and he also was in the Oscar-winning “La La Land.” He reflects, “It’s been a wonderful career, and I certainly hope to keep it going, and to work with more of the greats.”

But then the mother gathers each egg—which is about the size of a grain of rice—and weaves them into braids, allowing her to keep an eye on everyone at the same time.

Giannis Antetokounmpo still dominant in his 10th

It’s the beginning of the 2022-23 NBA and Giannis Antetokounmpo is once again dominating. Do you know where the Milwaukee Bucks are?

That would be first place in the Central Division with the league’s best record through the first week. And leading them on, once again, is the Greek Freak.

Through the season’s first four games, all Bucks wins, the 27-yearold big man from Athens was second in the NBA in scoring and rebounding with 34.5 points and 13.3 boards per game while also contributing 1.8 blocks, 6.3 assists and 0.8 steals. His season totals of 138 points, 53 rebounds and 25 assists make him the first player with at least 125 points, 50 rebounds and 25 assists through four games since Larry Bird in 1987-88.

He’s also done it while the Bucks have been short-handed with two key rotation players in forward Khris Middleton and guard Pat Connaughton on the shelf due to injury.

A 4-0 start is all well and good but Giannis remembers another time when the Bucks started the season with a string of wins but didn’t take home the O’Brien Trophy. That was in 2018-19, when they opened with seven-straight victories on their way to a 60-22 record the top seed in the East only to fall to the Toronto Raptors in the Conference Finals. So he’s not getting caught up in the warm-and-fuzzies surrounding the Bucks’ hot start.

“Sweet Smell of Success” (1957)

Lancaster gives a memorably icy performance as J.J. Hunsecker, a powerful and cruel New York columnist whose favor – and stor y space – is sought by a hustling press agent (Tony Curtis).

“Separate Tables” (1958) Lancaster and Oscar winners David Niven and Wendy Hiller play guests at a British resort.

“Run Silent Run Deep” (1958) Lancaster and Clark Gable are superb as officers at odds aboard a submarine.

“Elmer Gantry” (1960) Lancaster earned an Oscar for his title portrayal of a hugely charismatic salesman turned preacher “Judgment at Nuremberg” (1961) An all-star cast including Lancaster and Oscar winner Maximilian Schell fuels director Stanley Kramer’s drama of a war-crimes trial.

“Birdman of Alcatraz” (1962) Lancaster is outstanding in the true story of Robert Stroud,

who made himself an expert on birds while incarcerated in solitary confinement. Turner Classic Movies will show the film during an allnight Lancaster tribute Monday, Nov. 28.

“Seven Days in May” (1964) In director John Frankenheimer’s drama, the U.S. president (Fredric March) faces a potential military coup led by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (Lancaster) in a gripping melodrama with a script by Rod Serling.

“The Train” (1964) A locomotive carrying highly valued art works is at the heart of this World War II drama, for which Lancaster and John Frankenheimer teamed again.

“The Professionals” (1966) Lancaster is great fun in this Western as one of several troubleshooters hired to retrieve a tycoon’s kidnapped wife.

“The Swimmer” (1968) Lancaster’s physical prowess is on ample display in the odyssey of a man who swims his way through various pools in a Connecticut suburb.

“Atlantic City” (1980) Director Louis Malle’s superb drama casts Lancaster as a mobster who makes an unexpected new alliance.

OF ‘TULSA KING’ ON PARAMOUNT+

In Focus

“Tulsa King”?

Well, I think we’re both kind of steeped in the alpha tradition where life is hard, and I’ve always looked at trying to overcome odds. And the character is put in a situation where he has to start over at a very late point in life, so there’s a story there. Taylor and I look at life, maybe, in a short-handed way.

Most people get what life is about, so we don’t have to do a great deal of exposition. The more the audience can say, “Oh, that’s kind of what I’m going through, I didn’t think a gangster went through that” or, “I didn’t think that character would go through those particular dilemmas” ... we all are bound by the common frailties of man.

What do you think makes a gangster an interesting lead character in a project?

It’s just the relatability. (“Tulsa King” is) not your stereotypical gangster show that we’ve seen done ver y, very well. It’s probably been done to perfection in the gangster genre. This is a whole other thing.

I (as the character in the show) am out of my element. So now, my gang is made up of cowboys, women, fellas that run a weed store ... in other words, a group of misfits that fit

now?

gone. Now, you have so many fine performers and actors and writers specifically aiming for a TV career, to create these streaming shows that have such depth and give people a chance to branch out.

And these actors, they get better and better. It’s one thing when you’re acting in the scene; you go, “Okay, it’s pretty good.” Then you see it actually portrayed and broadcast, (and it’s,) “That guy is really good.” Sometimes, you’re in the middle of it and you don’t realize it, then you go, “This is much better than I anticipated.” So this has been one big, pleasant surprise.
