As it expands once more, the “Yellowstone” franchise is looking to the past ... again.

The new show’s title offers sufficient proof. “1923” starts its run Sunday, Dec. 18, on Paramount+, with Harrison Ford (in his first continuing series part) and Oscar, Primetime Emmy and Tony winner Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton, who head another division of the family that also is central to “Yellowstone” and its first prequel show, “1883.” The relatives face such plights as illness and drought as they try to edge into then-modern times. The Taylor Sheridancreated series has a second season of eight episodes, the same length as Season 1, already ordered.

CoVer sTory

Being filmed principally in Montana, “1923” is “a wonderful adventure” in Mirren’s view. “I’d never been to Montana before, so that’s been a revelation,” the actress says. “I knew it was impossibly beautiful, but the size and the variety of it is extraordinary. Doing this kind of story in this kind of landscape, where they are intrinsically tied together, is an amazing experience.

The geography of America has always fascinated me, and these (characters) are dealing with all the glories and difficulties inherent in that.”

The large cast of “1923” also includes James Badge Dale (“24”) as John Dutton Sr., plus Timothy Dalton, Robert Patrick, Jennifer Ehle, Darren Mann (“Animal Kingdom”), Brandon Sklenar

(“Mapplethorpe”), Marley Shelton, Brian Geraghty (“Big Sky”) and Jerome Flynn (“Game of Thrones”).

Mirren reports that rather than being detailed about her role at the outset, creator-producer Sheridan gave her “a sense of, ‘Do you want to come on this ride?’ We don’t know where the ride’s going to take us, and I found that really interesting and exciting.”

Mirren first worked with Ford in the 1986 movie “The Mosquito Coast.” She recalls that as “a great time, then we went off and did other things and lived a whole life, really. There’s been a connection that has never been lost, though ... so when we came together again, there was an incredible sense of familiarity and affection and history. That’s

invaluable if you’re playing husband and wife.”

Though Mirren won two of her Emmys for “Prime Suspect” mysteries, she doesn’t consider those as series in the same way “1923” is.

“I’ve never done something like this before,” she maintains. “With ‘Prime Suspect,’ we would do one four-hour story about every two years, so it was more like a miniseries. It wasn’t something ongoing like this is, though how far we’ll go is a mystery to me. I have to say that Taylor is an extraordinary writer; this springs with such complexity, but at the same time, it’s incredibly accessible. It’s not highfalutin’, but very playable, great writing.”

Curry

Don’t look now but here come the Golden State Warriors. Indeed, after a slow start that saw them lose seven of their first 10 games, the defending NBA champs have caught fire. And leading the way in an 8-3 November surge has been their twotime MVP point guard, Stephen Curry.

In a 10-game span running Nov. 7-27, the eight-time NBA All-Star racked up some impressive numbers, averaging 31.7 points per game on 55.4 percent shooting, to go with 7.4 assists, 1.1 steals and 6.6 rebounds. And from three-point range, he was absolutely deadly, shooting at a 46.8 percent clip.

But beyond the stat line, there is also leadership. That was evident in a Nov. 27 game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, when Warriors forward Draymond Green got hit with a technical foul late in Golden State’s 137-114 victory for coming onto the court while mimicking an opposing player’s shooting motion. Less than a minute later, Curry intentionally incurred his own “T” for running onto the court waving a towel in a sign of solidarity with his longtime teammate.

For his part, Green appreciated Curry’s gesture, especially given that Curry doesn’t get many technicals. In fact, this was only his third of 2022-23 and it was a $2,000 fine he was happy to take.

The 1965 movie’s opening One of the most famous introductions in screen histor y zooms in from clouds and valleys high above to show an arm-swaying Maria (Julie Andrews) crooning the Rodgers & Hammerstein title tune on a very scenic mountain. (ABC gives the film its annual holiday-season airing Sunday,

“How do you solve a problem like ... Maria, which the elder nuns in her abbey question tunefully, with the eventual answer being her assignment as governess to the von rapp children.

The children’s name call-out Commanded by their no-nonsense militarycaptain father (Christopher Plummer) as if they were soldiers, the youngsters form a straight line and introduce themselves to Maria in descending age order “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” We’ve always had questions about Rolfe (Daniel ruhitte) calling Liesl (Charmian Carr) “Baby,” given the era and circumstances, but that

doesn’t dent the charm of their playfully romantic duet inside a gazebo.

“My Favorite Things” “Schnitzel with noodles” and other treats have their musical moment as Maria inspires the children to quash their fears during a rainstorm.

“Do-Re-Mi” Wonderful editing enhances the lively song in which Maria takes the youngsters through the musical scale by associating each note with something (“Do, a deer, a female deer ... ”).

“The Lonely Goatherd” Marionettes help Maria and the children perform this lively song for the captain, though their efforts to entertain him appear to be a lost cause.

“Edelweiss” The stern captain finally displays emotion while singing this lovely melody, a symbol of his reconnecting with his children through their love of music.

The Baroness “counseling” Maria Eleanor Parker perfectly plays the captain’s worldly love interest, coolly trying to stake her

claim to him while advising her obvious rival for his heart to go back to the abbey The intermission prelude Maria’s determination that she can’t stay, largely because of her deepening feelings for the captain, sees her – in a heartbreaking image – standing alone in the entryway of the family villa before turning and making her exit.

“Something Good” For the high spirit of much of the rest of the score, the tender emotion of this love song between Maria and Captain von Trapp stands out.

The Salzburg Festival performance Though the captain didn’t want his children in the talent show, it proves to be an ideal cover for what he ultimately must do to keep from accommodating the Nazi Party

“So Long, Farewell” As they musically bid the festival audience a good night, the children leave the stage one by one – with few suspecting it’s a carefully prearranged set-up for what they have to do next.

OF ‘THE MOSQUITO COAST’ ON APPLE TV+

How did you like filming scenes in the Mexican jungle for Season 2 of “The Mosquito Coast”?

Look, I think because I’m so invested in (her character of Margot) that I didn’t really know where I was. I don’t feel I paid attention, to be really honest. I don’t know, if somebody left me there I’d be lost. I had no idea where they dropped me. I had no idea where I was filming specifically.

You knowing, acting is very intense and I think very cerebral and very internal. So often you get your script that you’ve been preparing for months and then you show up and then you have these amazing directors that really push you, some not so much. But the one I love was Metin (Huseyin) and he really got out the best of my character, I feel. And I don’t know where I was, really. I think they say, “OK, you turn left, you turn right, you go to this location.” (Laughs) Because to me, it’s the dialogue and the performance that I’m really thinking about. I’m not really thinking about much else.

You had some intense scenes with your TV husband, Justin Theroux. How was it working them out with him?

I mean, Justin’s on his path, really. We have such a lovely kind of – we don’t even have

to talk or explain what we’re doing. We just respond off each other so well. We’ve worked together since “Mulholland Drive.” That was a role I did with David Lynch ... . And it’s so funny that there’s this familiarity and he was also pivotal in me getting the role and now we’re married in the jungle. It’s kind of an incredible sort of almost like you know each other so well that to work together is just effortless.
