Scholarship Available for Students Formerly in Foster Care

Dunkirk, N.Y., January

25, 2023- Reverend Clifford

K. Cliver and his sister Lucy Cliver Sumsky grew up as foster children. In 2015, Rev. Cliver established the Reverend Clifford K. Cliver and Lucy Cliver Sumsky Scholarship to provide financial assistance for higher education to adults who, like them, spent time in the foster care system as a child.

Rev. Cliver said of the scholarship, “Together, we wanted to increase the resources given to students who have been in foster care, as it is vital to their well-being and improving their opportunities.” He created the scholarship to help those who have spent time in the foster care system reach their full potential by empowering them with educational skills and the tools they need to succeed.

The Reverend Clifford K. Cliver and Lucy Cliver Sumsky Scholarship is awarded annually without regard to the student’s financial circumstances. Graduates from a school district within Chautauqua County who have spent time in foster care during any period in their youth are eligible to apply. Applicants must also be at least 17 years old and be currently attending or accepted to a university, college, or trade school.

FREDONIA – The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center will present an encore presentation of the ribald comedy, Jack Absolute Flies Again, from London’s National Theatre, on Sat, Feb. 4, at 1 p.m., as part of its Stage On Screen Series. The production’s original presentation in November was impacted by the winter storm; this is an encore screening, graciously permitted by National Theatre Live.

From the writers of One Man, Two Guvnors, this hilarious new play is set in 1940s British summertime. After an aerial dog fight, Pilot Officer Jack Absolute flies home to rejoin his fearless young squadron at RAFB Fontwell. Once back on British soil, Jack is shocked to find his old flame, Lydia, on the base. He sets his sights on winning her heart, but with turbulence and hilarity never far away, his advances quickly turn to anarchy.

Captured live at the National Theatre in London, Emily Burns directs this spectacularly entertaining new version of Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s The Rivals Called this year’s big, blockbuster comedy from the National Theatre, Jack Absolute Flies Again is a hilarious wartime farce, with plenty of heart. London’s Daily Mail calls it “a snortingly good, crowd-pleasing comedy.”

The Evening Standard deems it an “uproarious mix of filth, derring-do and romance.”

The production runs approximately three hours; and patrons should consider it to have the equivalent of an R rating.

SUNY Fredonia Professor Emeritus Dr. James Ivey and Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus Tom Loughlin discuss this show and its origins in restoration comedy, in Episode 2.10 of the Opera House podcast, Notes From the Aisle Seat, which can be heard at https://aisleseat.podbean.com/ and nearly everywhere podcasts are heard.

Tickets may be purchased in person at the Opera House Box Office or by phone at 716-679-1891, Tuesday-Friday, 12-4:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online anytime at www.fredopera. org. The Stage on Screen Series is sponsored by Dr. James M. & Marcia Merrins.

For this production, the Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or Opera House staff member.

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center is a member-supported not-for-profit performing arts center with a mission to “present the performing arts for the benefit of our community and region … providing access to artistic diversity … and high quality programming at an affordable price.” It is located in Village Hall in downtown Fredonia. Reg Lenna Center for The Arts invites the public to

more movie showings. It showcased films and live events through 1956. That year saw Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz return to Jamestown to premiere their film Forever Darling at the theater.

Reg Lenna Center for The Arts begins a yearlong celebration of the Palace Theater’s 100th anniversary with a free public event, Sunday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m.

100 years to the day of the opening of the Palace Theater, the Centennial Celebration will feature an address from Executive Director Hillary Meyer, words from special guests from the community, treats for those in attendance and a free screening at 2:30 p.m. of the 2003 comedy film, School of Rock, starring Jack Black.

The Palace Theater opened on February 5, 1923 with a program featuring live music, public officials and a screening of the Lionel Barrymore film, A Face in the Fog. The theater initially operated as a vaudeville house, with Nikitas Dipson purchasing it in 1926, adding

After 25 years of showing films exclusively, the Palace had fallen into disrepair. After a noted solo concert by Harry Chapin in 1981, community members began the process of raising funds to restore the theater. The Palace Civic Center presented live performances for nearly a decade, reopening fully after it was restored in 1990. It was renamed the Reg Lenna Civic Center, honoring Reginald and Elizabeth Lenna - who provided a generous financial gift to complete the renovations. The theater continues to be the focus of programming at Reg Lenna Center for The Arts with over 60 films and 30 live events presented annually.

The Centennial Celebration will kick off a year of anniversary film screenings, live entertainment and the return of the Cash Bash fundraiser. A larger, commemorative event recognizing the Palace will take place this fall.

Music can touch the heart and soul. That makes an evening watching a band play or enjoying a musical on the stage even more memorable if it occurs on Valentine’s Day. Select an intimate venue to add to the romantic ambiance of the night.

have to look far and wide to book a reservation. If a restaurant does not take reservations that far out, ask when they will start collecting names for Valentine’s Day and book the moment you can.

One way to make the night more romantic is to snuggle in the back seat of a vehicle and have someone else do the driving. This also is a safer option if you plan to pop a bottle of bubbly or sip some wine while celebrating. Hiring a limousine, luxury car, horsedrawn carriage, or something similar also will require advanced reservations. However, going the extra mile can make the night memorable.

Tip #3: Emulate a scene from a favorite film

The person you love may adore a romantic movie, whether it’s a classic or more recent tear-jerker. When planning a romantic evening out, consider reenacting a movie scene with you and your special someone in the starring roles. For example, recall when Tom Hanks met Meg Ryan at the top of the Empire State Building in “Sleepless in Seattle.” Include a visit to the observation deck or roof as part of a whirlwind Valentine’s Day experience.

Tip #4: Attend a live music

Couples may go about such celebrating in their own unique ways, but it’s not uncommon to focus on a night out on the town. Valentine’s Day is a busy holiday for many businesses, but especially so at restaurants and other romantic venues. So it’s best to plan ahead to ensure a perfect evening. These tips can help you organize a Valentine’s experience to remember. Tip #1: Reserve early The closer to Valentine’s Day, the more likely popular restaurants will be all booked up. If the goal is to dine at a particularly trendy spot — or anywhere but the most obscure establishment — be sure to make a reservation well in advance.
