GOWANDA, N.Y. - The to Gowanda. Gowanda Varsity football team played its final regular season game and celebrated Senior Night on Oct. 20, hosting Frewsburg. After winning the coin toss and receiving the opening kickoff, a fumble at the end of a 26-yard kick return gave the ball to Frewsburg on their 43. That drive stalled at the Gowanda 26 where Gowanda got the ball on downs. After gaining only six yards in three plays, Gowanda was forced to punt, returning for a Frewsburg touchdown. After several unsuccessful drives for both teams, Gowanda got a big break with 2:52 left in the first half. Winter Rivera intercepted a Frewsburg pass and returned it for a Gowanda touchdown. The 2-point conversion run was good and Gowanda grabbed the lead 8-7. Gowanda followed that with a successful onside kick, giving them a new drive starting on their own 49. They drove to the 26 with 4th down coming up and time running out. Harlee Conklin connected with Logan Ruff from there for a touchdown, giving Gowanda a 14-7 lead. three points gave Ellicottville the 25-17 win and tied the match at two games each. In the final game, it was all Ellicottville, starting with a 4-1 lead before growing that to 9-2. Gowanda got as close as 10-5 before Ellicottville nailed down the final five points for a 15-10 win, taking the match 3-2. Leading the Gowanda effort were Holland Browning (19 digs, 14 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks), Aubrie Heron (6 kills, 3 digs, 2 aces) and Jada Geiger (5 kills and 1 block). The volleyball team returned home for their Senior Night on Oct. 19 for a game with Silver Creek. Seniors Aurora Stevens, Gao:Wisa:S Stevens, Lani Farley, Jada Geiger and Josalyn Degenfelder were honored before the game. After grabbing a quick 4-1 lead, Gowanda slipped back into a 4-4 tie. Things stayed close through a 15-15 tie. From there Silver Creek pulled into a 21-15 lead. Gowanda fought back and tied the game at 23 before Silver Creek scored twice to take a 26-24 win in game one. Gowanda rebounded to take wins in the next three games by scores of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-21. The 3-1 win in the match left the team with an 11-3 record for the regular season, good enough for a bye in the first round in Section 6

Auto Did You Know? Gardening enthusiasts recognize that fall is not a time to rest on their laurels. In fact, fall is a great season to spend time in the yard. The Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst indicates fall is the ideal time to improve the soil for next season. Amending the soil in the fall allows it

to react accordingly over time and reap the benefits in spring. UMass suggests getting an accurate soil test to see what is needed in the garden. Samples should be taken from various areas. Avoid doing so when the soil is very wet. At-home kits can test for nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous and determine the soil's pH. Gardeners should

till the soil and add compost or manure, which will counteract many nutritional deficiencies. Worm castings also are good to add, particularly for summer vegetable gardens. The gardening company Park Seed says that worm castings are high in minerals and effective at holding water so much so that they even can be used alone in place of potting soil. Crushed egg shells, coffee grounds and banana peels also can be added in the fall, even if they are not part of a compost pile. The nutrients will break down throughout the fall and winter, and be available just in time for summer plantings.
