Project’ s Purpose:

Analysis of a free - form given surface in stripes, in order to fabricate it from unstrechable initially flat material.

Method followed:

Generation of 1 periodic stripe from UVmesh, 5900 cm long (1.5 cm wide), optimized for minimum geode sic curvature with K2 (angle and length goal).

Criteria:

In every node, the geodesic angle was evaluated and the stripe was splitted when the angle was higher than the defined one, based on the desired result. (amount of stripes, length)

TOBACCO WAREHOUSES: BLOOMING AFTER THE END. A NEW LIFE FOR AN OLD BUILDING.

Supervisor: Nikolaou D.

Architect: Galata E. MAR 2019 - FEB 2020

PROJECT’S LOCATION : AGRINIO, GREECE

ABSTRACT

The starting point for the proposal of this the sis was to realize the number of unused industrial buildings in the city of Agrinio. These are warehouses of smoke scattered in the urban fabric, most of which, after the end of the city’s tobacco industry, have been abandoned and remain inactive shells to this day, and many have been demolished. Thus, it is proposed to reuse one of these buildings, which served both as a shell and as a site for the use of the Agricultural School.

The reintegration of such a building, and the reuse of inactive shells of a city that have played a role in its evolution, reinforces the collective memo ry of the place and revives, with a modern dimension, a part of its history.

For this particular building it was proposed to be used as School of Agriculture, a new function for the city (one of the largest in Western Greece), avoid ing an exclusively museum use. The proximity to school districts and downtown has been instrumental in making this decision, while the need to renew and rebuild the population has also played an important role.

In order to serve the new function, the old build ing has been changed internally to serve the education al purpose, while its facades are kept the same, a new building is added to the surrounding area to receive the most public functions of the complex and finally, part of the surrounding area is shaped as square and outdoor break space, addressed to both the School and the schools, as well as the city itself.

The DANCE SCHOOL is a project located in a central area In such a close distance from the area’s metro station and any green parks of the city center, the site consists a public for both locals and tourists.

Taking under consideration the site’s special characteristics curved and inclined square which is oriented to the existing park‘s unaffected continuity into the building.

Underneath the square is laid the school’s STAGE, a theater for the Dance Shows, while floor in its totality is a space dedicated to public usage.

Through the square’s gradual transition from an outdoor stroll into the Dance terior, the School’s STUDENT’S can reach to the building’s higher levels. The elongated volume is consisted by two floors and hosts the School’s functional rooms, as such the classrooms, the dancehalls, the changing rooms, etc.

cOLLECTIVE hOUSING

The main concern of this project is the redevelopment of the area of Eleonas, which is mostly unstructured, quite close to the center of Athens, but with dif ferent characteristics. Another requirement of our concept was the establishment of a social housing system.

A constituent part of the synthetic idea is the hive, based on its theoretical basis. As a hive symbolizes the organization and the structure, we wanted to in dicate the parallelism with the behaviour of the proposed model. Other qualities of the hive, such as the representation of society, of harmony, of order, of austerity and the sweet effects of toil also enhanced our decision. Overall, we tried to promote the bees’ way of acting as part of an ensemble and their gentle and effective co-existance that constitutes their common purpose.
