My name is Eleanor Jones. I am currently undertaking my MArch at the University of Manchester, having completed my BA at The University of Manchester and recently undertaken a year in practice as a Part I Architectural Assistant at DAY Architectural in Manchester.

I have a particular interest in conservation and heritage schemes and take a sympathetic and thoughtful approach to design.

I am a hard-working individual with a tenacious attentiveness to detail. I have a strong sense of self-motivation and time-keeping skills, having completed my undergraduate studies during the height of the pandemic and joining my most recent role in a work from home setting. I reaped the benefits from my work-ethic in my final year module results, achieving 85% overall and receiving the Deans Award for Academic Achievement.

I am confident using several CAD programmes including Revit, AutoCad, Sketch-up and Rhino, having used many of these programmes consistently throughout my academic and professional careers.

Outside of Architecture, I am constantly looking for ways to channel my creativity, running my own small business selling graphics and prints and I enjoy photography and graphic design.

Rawtenstall

Rawtenstall Connected, Rawtenstall

A master planning scheme for the town of Rawtenstall, developing and improving a key route through the town to bring visitors to the key attractions as well as overlooked areas of the town. The project involves a breadth of urban improvements including introducing c ohesive physical, digital and temporary wayfinding, ground works and highways improvements , commission of community art and landscaping and feature lighting.

Client: Rossendale Borough Council //Genecon Ltd

Current Stage of Work: Stage 1

I took a leading role on the Rawtenstall Connected project, setting up the initial feasibility and concept document, noting the key issues of each area and finding solutions, brainstorming ideas for wayfinding, landscaping, urban design and highways works. Within these leading role my involvement included creating the Feasibility Document summarising the proposed work through a series of plans and concept rendered collages and precedent studies. I worked closely with the Interior Design, Graphics and Cost Management team to create a set of town branding and wayfinding and to establish an early cost plan and itinerary of works.

Rawtenstall is a historic milling town with a rich history and a beautiful setting within the Rossendale Valley. Alongside its rich historic past the town is an epicentre for adrenaline seekers , with a dry ski slope centre, several golf clubs, equestrian centres, and C ribden hill to the north for keen hikers.

The brief for the project is to establish a key route through the town linking the newly built New Hall Hey Retail Park, to the historic town centre and up to Ratwenstall Markets. The project will explore opportunities for urban improvements, wayfinding, community art and engagement and branding for the town.

The seven nodal points identified will be used within the wayfinding and signage within the scheme. Each area is given a specific colour from heritage sympathetic and considered colour scheme.

Each area and the route between each area present their own set of challenges and issues. The main key issues are lack of wayfinding, poor hard surfacing, lack of community intervention and visual interest and lack of pedestrian crossing points

The general solutions to the challenges outlined above are simplified in four key categories:

- Wayfinding which will include making good existing signage, adding new continuous signage, and introducing digital tools.

- External works upgrades focusing on create synergy through the route and increasing accessibility and pedestrian friendliness.

- Improved sight lines ensuring that the key sites and wayfinding tools are visible from key exit and decision points along the route.

- Community art will add points of interest along the route and allow local artists and organisations to be celebrated and included.

Derby Hippodrome, Derby

Conversion and extension of an existing Grade II listed former Hippodrome to student accommodation. The existing building is in the heart of Derby city centre and an iconic and significant historic landmark . The scheme includes demolition works to the existing building due to extensive fire and disrepair, these works must, however, also comply with Grade II listed building guidance and the historical significance statement.

Client: Planet International UK

Current Stage of Work: Stage 1

I worked on this project initially creating a set of public consultation boards of the revised massing options to be presented at a public meeting. Later on in my placement I was brought back onto the project to lead the creation of the Design and Access Statement ahead of planning. Within the document I complied historical analysis, site diagrams, concept development and servicing strategies. I also worked extensively creating a series of existing, original and demolition model from the existing building elevations. I also created a set of demolition and existing building drawings including plans, elevations and sections with appropriate keys.

The Hippodrome was built on the site of Derby’s first private asylum.

The Grand was converted to a 1,800 seater cinema, using Kalee cine-sound projectors.

Derby Hippodrome opened its door as a 2,300 seater ‘Variety House’.

The theatre trade died almost overnight with the introduction of cheaper television. The Hippodrome closed its doors in December 1959.

Over a 45 year period, the venue hosted 1,158 live performances including racing whippets, performing pidgeons and an aquatics show.

Cliff Richard and Lonnie Donegan performed in Sunday concerts, as did the Hallé Orchestra and the Big Band names of Geraldo, Eric Delaney and Ted Heath.

Major flooding caused by the onstage aquatics show.

Infamous actress Anne Neagle visited to the box office to promote her latest film.

Local boom in purpose built cinemas being built across Derby. At one point there was over 20.

The Hippodrome was at this stage receiving in excess of 10,000 visitors a week.

In 2006 planning permission was granted conditionally for the change of use of the bingo and social club to a theatre. Association and the permission was not implemented. It expired on 6 October 2009.

Bought by a Bingo consortium, the theatre was refurbished as a Bingo Hall.

ITV introduced to Central England.

Morecambe and Wise visit Derby Hippodrome as part of the nationwide tour, pictured here in 1954.

Children visiting the hippdrome for the annual Panto in 1954.

The Hippodrome was restored as a theatre.

In addition to being restored to its original function, many of the Hippodrome’s architectural features were also lovingly restored.

The building is awarded Grade II Listing in 1996 mostly to end sure retention of the interior render work.

The Bingo Hall ceases operation and closes in 2006.

Change Of Use application To Coffee Shop (Use Class A3), Together With Ancillary Exhibition Space On The Ground Floor And Change Of Use To Use Class B1 (Office And Meeting Rooms) On Second, Third And Fourth Floors - proposal looks to retain the part of the building use as a theatre - granted conditionally

A suspected arson fire ravages the building causing the roof to collapse and leaving severe fire damage.

Due to the recent global pandemic of COVID-19, British Theatre is on the brink of ruin and the theatre remians in a state of disrepair

It is home to Derby Hippodrome; a former theatre, cinema and more recently, Mecca bingo hall . The existing building, designed by Newcastle architects Marshall & Tweed , has fallen into severe disrepair and the site has been vacant for a number of years. The building suffered a fire several years ago and incurred severe fire damage including complete loss of the roof.

Built in 1914 the building is typical of cultural and theatrical buildings of the era, a crossover of both Edwardian and Art Deco styles as the country embarked on the Second World War. As one of the earliest theatre designed for both live entertainment and cinema, it serves as a basis for theatre design through until the 1930s.

The aspiration for the site is to r edevelop and sensitively restore the listed building back to its original condition, extending upwards to create series of additional floors. The building is to be converted to a Student Accommodation scheme providing active frontage to Macklin Street and Green Lane with amenity spaces which will re-activate the currently neglected streetscape.

Destination Harthill, Chester

Renovation and extension of an existing Grade II listed School & School Master’s House in the village of Harthill. As part of the wider Bolesworth Castle estate the building and new extension will form a food & beverage offer to compliment a series of walking trails linking to the neighbouring Sandstone Trail. Alongside traditional walking trails, the site offers a fully accessible trail, picnic area, landscaped gardens, parking provision to reduce fly parking issues in the area, and feature sculpture & art installation.

Client: Bolesworth Estate Company Ltd

Current Stage of Work: Stage 2

I was involved on the Destination Project from early concept through to planning submission and worked through the entire Design and Access Statement from site analysis, concept massing to demoliton and planning drawings, CGIs and access and servicing strategies. I also worked on a series of consultation presentations to both the council and public ahead of planning submission which highlighted the sustainable and community centric benefits of the project.

The Existing Building

The existing building is made up of the original 19th century school house and 20th century extension.

Demolish the Extension

The existing extension is demolished as it is of low quality and not suitable for purpose.

Establish the layout

The new footprint sits in line with the previous extension so not to over develop the site.

Extrude the Massing

The extruded rectilinear mass sits in line with the existing flat roof so not to overbear the historic building.

Connecting to the Old

A glazed atrium is created to connect the existing building and new extension, sympathetically bridging between old and new.

Soften the Roofline

The new massing is blended into the landscape with use of a Sedum roof which softens the rectilinear form.

Harthill is located very close to the Sandstone Trail - a 55-kilometre (34 mi) long-distance walkers’ path, following sandstone ridges running north–south from Frodsham in central Cheshire to Whitchurch just over the Shropshire border. The path was created in 1974 and extended in the 1990s. The trail provides opportunity for the Harthill location as a mid-way stopping point for users of the trail.

The Existing School and School master’s house are characteristic of educational buildings of the era. With a front facing main entrance to the school, central school hall marked by three large arched windows at the front and a clock tower. The schoolmasters house attached to the right of the school is typical of a Victorian era semi detached home , with large ground floor

bay window and a pitched roof. The existing building has been previously extended in the 20th century and the rear extension consists of a large glazed hall space and ancillary spaces with flat roofs , in a similar ashlar sandstone toned brick.

The proposed design is to renovate and restore the original school house, removing the existing detrimental extension and create an new single storey glazed extension to house the new Food & Beverage offe r, with Copper cladding to compliment the nearby historic copper mines. The extension is rectilinear in form and is design to minimise impact on the existing building and provide keys views through to the red sandstone building and out over the area of natural beauty surrounding the site.

Burnley

Newtown Mill, Burnley

Conversion of an existing historic mill in Burnley town centre into a student hub and lecture building for The University of Central Lancashire , as part of their new Victoria Mills Campus. The scheme includes a full refit of the historic mill, including preservation of the original overhead gantry crane. The building will provide two lecture theatres, study rooms, a business suite and administrative areas for staff and students at the University. The scheme is part of the Burnley Town Council Levelling Up scheme.

Client: Barnfield Developments Ltd & Burnley Borough Council

Current Stage of Work: Stage 3

I worked extensively on the Newtown Mill project establishing and delivering the full Design and Access Statement inlcuding Site analysis, design development, planning drawings and access and servicing strategies. I also created the existing site model and planning model which was then rendered to form the planning elevations and CGI views in the serial vision of the building. My model and CGI renders have since been used on advertising boards and in articles.

The Weavers' Triangle is an area of Burnley consisting mostly of 19th-century industrial buildings at the western side of the town centre. The area has significant historic interest as the cotton mills and associated buildings encapsulate the social and economic development of the town and its weaving industry

The proposal aims to restore the original mill , extending to the rear to create a second focal entrance mirroring the opposite gable. The new extension is clad in corten steel and transitions from large glazed elements to opaque panels through a series of screens which mimic the atomic make up of the steel created in the original factory.

The building is split over two levels with a grand central staircase linking the two from front to rear. The building sits among recent development of a new town campus for UClan and mirrors the existing building styles with the use of corten steel and exposed circulation cores.
