Statement of Intent Photographers Analysis Mind Map David Spero Interpretation First Relationship Photoshoot Colour Mind Map So Far Scans ReShoots Possible Ideas Evaluation
Statement of Intent My chosen theme for my exam is Relationships, within this exam I will show my different interpretations of ideas within what I feel a relationship is. I intend to carry out research into different photographers and artists such as David Spero, Elinor Carucci and Ed Rushcha in order to inspire me to come up with creative and good photo-shoot ideas in order to eventually produce a final piece. I will use their work to first inspire me and then interpret their ideas and make them my own. The photo-shoots I would like to complete to help me explore the topic of Relationships are an interpretation shoot of David Spero to show how objects change and adapt to the different environment they are in, this shows the change in relationship between them, I will then carry out a shoot based on how I see relationships, within that photo-shoot I will experiment with the use of colour and emotion, how the shapes within shadows reflect the mood and relationship between the viewer and the photograph and finally how colour and objects can reflect the mood within a photograph and the relationship between and person and their inner self. Whichever is my most successful idea I will then progress further and re-shoot for my final piece. In order to support my topic I will do research into artists, photographers and galleries that base their ideas and photo-shoots around the theme of Relationships. As well as looking at my own photographers and artists I will also look at more throughout this website which show a variation of different relationships and sometimes multiple ones, I will do this to show how I can take elements of how each one is taken, presented and shows relationships within each image. I can reflect upon this and use how they portray different emotions and relationships within my own work and eventually progress my ideas into a final piece. Through the course I will use both manual and digital techniques in order to produce the best quality photographs. Using a camera I will change the ISO speed, shutter speed, zoom and aperture in order to produce the best picture possible for each specific set assignment. Using the darkroom I will produce... Using Photoshop I will adjust the photographs exposure, contrast, saturation, clarity, offset and vibrancy. I will further then change the opacity of the images which allows the combination of a number of layers to be created with a variation of images. To digitally edit my images I will use how Photoshop blends the lighting together to create different and unique edits within my image. During this topic I hope to learn more about how other photographers and artists interpret and present relationships, I will then like to see how I can use their work to first inspire one of my own photo-shoots and then I will be able to interpret their ideas and make them my own. I see the final format of my piece being a combination of different relationships to show a comparison. I will do a photo-shoot which involves several different types of relationships and then further one idea into a re-shoot and eventually my final piece.
Elinor Carucci Elinor Carucci was born in Jerusalem where she served in the Israeli Army for two years from 1989–1991. She then received her BFA from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in 1995, and is now living in New York with her husband and 2 children. Since her gallery debut in 1997 she has had many solo exhibitions in London, Frankfurt, Prague and Jerusalem. Her work is collected worldwide by institutions and private collectors. Her work is all to do with relationships between people and mainly focuses on relationships between mothers and children, however, some of her work is very intimate between men and women which I think reflects on her earlier life when she witnessed her parents relationship
‘‘Aiming to portray the motherhood as it really is’’
which eventually ended into divorce, her own infidelity and drugs. Her work during 2008 changed slightly to focus on her career as a Middle Eastern dancer which conveyed the emotion of loneliness, physicality and endurance of the endless public transport and blistered feet which she endured for her dance. However when she became pregnant with her twins and saw them grow up and their independence develop the intimacy that she became famous for started to come back through her photographs. A majority of her photographs are close ups of faces or eyes when they have another object in the picture, this makes you focus more on what I happening in the photograph and
why its happening. The images are different to others I have seen as they are much more close and personal between families compared to others I have seen such as Tina Barney who focuses on the acrostic families and set up portraits with different types of people and formalities between them in different house locations, this differs to Elinor Carucci’s photography as she is much more intimate in the settings in which she takes the photographs, as they are a lot closer it capture the viewers attention. From her work I would like to incorporate how she reflects intimacy between the different relationships in families and record that within my own photographs to produce a successful photo-shoot.
Ed Ruscha Ed Ruscha was born on December 16, 1937 in Omaha, Nebraska. Ruscha’s early paintings were part of the pop art movement in the 1960’s. In the early 1970’s he experimented with other media’s such as gunpowder, vinyl, blood, red wine, fruit and vegetable juices, axle grease, chocolate syrup, this made his work more memorable to people due to the unusual media. Soon he began to refine his collages, isolating and recombining words and images in a gradual way. Because he drew upon sources from the real world and embraced different techniques and imagery of commercial culture, buildings he then associated it with his work within the style of Pop art to create his pieces. Many of his photographs involve using isolated

uncared for buildings, corner buildings or having a central point to it, for example the diving board. I think the themes throughout his work reflect what he is trying to convey to the public through his work that even the most destroyed and damaged buildings can be made to look interesting with the simple effect of isolating them from the rest of their environment. To take many of his photographs they would have been done at night to capture the contrast of lighting on the building against the black sky. This makes the photographs look even more isolated and lonely as it is standing on its own with nothing around it. I think the photographer is trying to show the rural areas either around were he lives or in areas
he thinks need recognising, if I could ask him a question it would be what is your purpose in these photographs? Are you trying to raise awareness? Or show how not everything has to be modern in a 21st century society? This image compares with others I have seen such as Hans Christian Schink where he shows the relationship between man made and natural objects and environments join together to make one. This is different to Ed Ruscha’s work as much of it is focused on just buildings and isolated areas and objects, however to create a relationship he places words over the image that relate in some way to show that from of relationship. I could interpret it differently by his work being a cry for help for people in poor societies that
need help which would explain the use of damaged buildings, this would cause sympathy amongst the viewers. From his work I can take influence about how he makes links and connections between the photographs and words to create relationships between them. From this I have explored through my mind map how I can take the simplest of pictures for example of books and create a relationship between that and the words itself. I have experimented this through several different images to see how it effects the way you look at the image, I furthered this by placing an edit on the photograph which allowed it to be slightly distorts which placed emphasis on the words to give it a strong connection and relationship.
David Spero David Spero was born in 1963 and studied at the Royal College of Art, London. Since then he has been involved in many photographic projects and much of his work is displayed at the Victoria and Albert museum and British Council. He is manly famous for his projects into, Settlements, Churches and Ball Photographs. When looking at settlements he demonstrates interests into overlooked locations and domestic areas. His work reveals the structures and lifestyles of ecological communities, through his Settlement images he documents a series of images of urban architecture appropriate for places of worship, this is where his project into Churches links in. Within his latest work of Ball Photography he invades domestic space such as bathrooms and dance studios to artistically alter the interior architecture of the environment. In the photographs there is normally a focal point in them which draws your eye in and leads it to the point in which David Spero wants you to focus on. The subject theme seems to be showing how different object categories such as man made and the environment join together and how they are artistically effected by each-other. I think the subject matter of these particular photographs is to
show the links, connection relationship be‘‘Invasion ofand domestic space’’ tween the objects and how they are effected by their set environments and how they can create a strong visual photograph which captivates the viewer and makes them want to know more. I believe the photographer is trying to state the fine line between art and photography and how you can incorporate objects and the environment into it. It compares to other photographers I’ve seen before such as Hans Christian Schink as he shows the links between man made objects and building going into the environment and how they effect an compliment each-other. This links to David Speros work as he shows the relationships between domestic and over looked areas in combination with small objects to alter the way you see the photograph. From his work I can take the ideas of combining man made objects with natural objects and environments and see how the different environments effects them. I like this idea as it shows the use of object and environment photography however I can do my own interpretation by having a living object such as a flower which belongs in the environment. see how it is affected in the different locations.

Here are my interpretations of the artist and photographer David Spero. He is mainly famous for his settlement photographs and church projects.
I took inspiration from his photographs which encorparated objects both natural and man made that shouldnt be in the set environments in which the photographs were taken. I then transformed his idea by making something beautiful such as a rose starting in its natuaral environment and being healthy, this then progressed into places that it shouldnt be for examply in a dirty puddle or in a lake. Because of this it kills the flower and ends back in its natural environment which is when it is photographed up against the tree. This shows the developing relationship between the rose and the different environments it is in and how it reacts to them.
Here i used Photoshop to manipulate my phiotographs. I did this by changing the vibrancy, saturation, and intensity of colour and the contrast between them to make specific colours stand out and become stronger. I then further manipulated the two top images by creating two layers one black and white and the other colour and took away the colour until only the flower was left so it becaome the focal point of the photograph. For the third lower image i used a combonation of differernt layer styles along with adjusting the opacity so you can see through to the colour image behind it.
Here
I have eddited this double page spread using a combination of the Harris Shuuter speed effect, in combination with invert.
For this photo-shoot I decided to interpret
relationships between a person and their inner self and see how colours, objects and shadows can reflect and symbolise this in a photograph. The theme I decided to convey on this page is sadness and hurt. For the image on the left I produced this feeling through the body position of my model, by her being hunched over and small it shows a feeling of insecurity. This is then furthered when I get to the editing process using Photoshop. To create
To the right is a piece created by combining two
images together. I wanted to convey here the combination of fear and bravery through the use of body position, camera angle and facial expression. Using a technique on Photoshop I put the two images together to create two layers, I then changed the lighting to hard light, this then placed an effect on one of the images allowing them to be combined together to look like one image. I wanted to do this to show two emotions thought he same image, however, to do this it involved using the same
person twice just capturing a different emotion each time. From the positioning of the camera it shows a head on view which draws you to the face of the person looking directly into the camera. The fact they are hunched over shows a feeling of fear and insecurity so even though they are showing bravery through their face and eyes their body position shows something different. This conveys the battle between the relationship between how the person is feeling on the inside which is brave and how they cant bring themselves to physically be.
this piece I took two different images and made one into black and white and the other into a dull colour by taking away the saturation of colour in the image. I then brought the layers together and adapted the size and opacity until I was happy with the layout and how the images blended together. By having the flower petles on her face broken and torn mixed with the dirt and messy hair it shows the sign of sadness and imperfection within her relationship between her and her inner self.
Through this page I wanted to show a direct split
between different emotions. On the left an inner frustration is being shown through the screaming position which has been placed smaller and behind the image which shows the person is trying to hide it. The top right image is a crop between two images to show a happy and sad and angry feeling. The two have been edited slightly different to reflect their own feelings, the sad side has a much duller saturation of colour which changes the atmosphere of the photograph, placed next to the happy image it shows a direct comparison in emotions as the colours are much more saturated and brighter which shows a sign of happiness. The image on the bottom right is a combination of images which are put together to mirror each-other and reflect different emotions. Having the top section of the photograph that specific image and size it shows domination over the whole piece itself. The image at the bottom is much smaller which creates and insignificant feeling of the happy emotion which shows in this particular image that the sad feeling has won.
For this section of images
i have decided to focus on how colour can symbolise a persons personality and feelings within themselves. Above is an image created and edited using Adobe Photoshop, i used a technique called pin light to isolate the vivid colours on an image on the top layer, this then placed the effect on the layer below which is why only parts of the image are coloured. In comparison to previous pages the colours are bright and saturated which conveys a happy and excited feeling. Through the body language and facial expressions of the model it shows she has a slight smile, which in comparison to my other photographs you can see a happy feeling being shown. The im-
age on the bottom left was produced using two images and an effect which allows the image below to come through partly. This is a way of showing two emotions at once through at once, the body position shows confidence as the model is slouched and leaned against the fence showing an open posture which shows she has nothing to hide and is open. The rest are eddited through the Harris Shutter Speed effect, this isolates the primary colours within the image and lets you pick and choose whether you want all 3, 2 or just 1. When isolating the colurs i made three layers and left one different colour on each layer, moving them slightly away from eachother the set colours are revealed and come
out like the bottom right image. To over lap two images, to create an edit that ismore subtle rarther than having all 3 primary colours seperated and placed on one image, i chose to have two images, one its normal colours and the other to have its colours isolated to just blue, by layering them together it meant the blue layer cast a colour over the original image and made it red, this is a differet wy of showing two images at once but still includes the use of colour to represent the different emotions. To encorparate colours into my relationships theme i chose for it to represent the feelings and emotions a person is feeling within themselves, the vibrancey of the colours also shows confidence and strength within the person..
Above are images creat-
ed by Photoshop using two images together and changing the lighting on of of them to make them both blend together and give a striking effect, for the top left image i used a lighter colour effect and the right a hue saturation effect. Below is a different combination of layers as one has been inverted
Other ideas I had for my relationship photography is to combine the environment with emotions
and feelings within yourself. To do this I chose an image where the model had an innocent look by looking down towards the ground, however, by having the camera at eye level it places emphasis on the fact she is equal with the camera and central which creates a balanced photograph. Taking the picture of the trees from above it captures both the sky and the outline of the branches which creates a nice effect across the face of my images. To do this I placed the tree effect on top of the face layer and placed four different effects over it to adjust how harsh the tree image was projected onto the face, the different effects used were, colour dodge, overlay, screen and vivid. I incorporated objects into this by having the perfectly coloured flower petals attached to her face, as my photo-shoot progressed I gradually tore and made them a dull colour to adapt to the emotion that was being conveyed. The inspiration of this came from my interpretations photo-shoot based on David Speros work, from it I photographed a rose in a series of locations and environments where it did and didn’t belong to see how it changed and effected the flower.
These images are created through Pho-
toshoped shadows. Through this I wanted to show how the different shapes of shadows could effect how you looked and saw the photograph. To the left is an image that has been placed into black an white apart from the main colours of the petals, eyes and lips. I then used the marquee tool to create circular cut out shapes and placed the layer ontop of the image, this then highlighted the colour of the lips, eyes and petals as they were extenuated due to being inside the circles. The top right image conveys a slightly different message as the shadows could resemble what looks like a bars holding her back. The colour and saturation of this reflects the emotion of feeling trapped inside something which is emphasised by the Photoshoped shadows. The bottom left photograph shows underneath the shadows a scared and frightened person who is hiding. The jagged shapes cut from this shadow only reveal a very small proportion of the photographs colour, by being a much darker shadow it shows the person does not want to be seen.
RED
passion. It has many different meanings but i will be using it in combination with body language and facial expressions to convey the emotions of power, strength, chaos and anger. In combination with black the red stands out even more to create a striking colour contrast within my furture re-shoots.

darkness, sadness and mystery of the unknown, i have decided to use several of these ideas in combination with red to show a strength and mystery within my future re-shoot. I like the idea of using black and red together as it strengthens the colour red but is still a stand out colour on its own. I think it will be interesting to see it directly comparisoned to the future shots with the colours white and pink.

NK Pink represents the the emo-
tions of compassion, love and nurtring. It is symbolic of th ephrase ‘unconditional love and understanding’ and the giving and recieving of nurturing. The mixture between red and white shows the passion and power of the red, however, it is softened by the purity and completeness of the white. Pink tones down the physical pasion of red and replaces it with a a gnetler engery. The colour itself gives off the feelings of femeninity, romantic and affectionate.
purity, normally related to goddesses and the puritest of people. I have chosen this colour as a direct contrast to red and black, and placed it with pink as they work collaborativly together very well. There are different impressions the colour white gives off, one of these are innocence, combined with pink could potentially show and innocence to do with love and romanticism.
Interpretations
So Far Object Photography
So far in this course of relationships I have taken object photography on items that represent me. For example the Union Jack purse is a representation of the fact I’m young and British. The keys on the other hand, show a variety of my likes such as animals and colours. Through editing them I have adapted and changed the saturation, colour vibrancy, contrast and clarity of the photographs to best suit my chosen style of editing. I chose to then further edit some of my photographs using the Harris Shutter Speed effect, by making three copies of the image on Photoshop and eliminating two colours from each of them leaving one primary colour visible it creates a coloured shutter speed effect. My main aim for this photo-shoot was to photograph different objects in different interesting locations to best represent me.
Scans
Since i started this course i have completed a photoshoot wich encorparated the theme of relationships in several different ways. I first chose to have how colour can show the relationship between someone and their inner self, i also wanted to show how shadows and their shapes could effect how you saw a photograph and my last idea was how colour could convey emotions. I chose these three ideas so i could choose the best one and purse it into a reshoot. My most successful idea was using the relationship of colour and emotions which i will further later on in the course.
During this course I have completed a photo-shoot inspired by the work of David Spero. His work includes placing small objects into places or environments in which they don’t belong. For example the snooker balls in a bath room. For my interpretation I decided to use a rose to be my object. I first placed it in its natural environment when it is at the peak of its beauty, I then progressed to placing it in places where it did not belong such as the rubbish bin and puddle, whilst doing
this I had the lower gradually being destroyed to show the change and effect the environments have on the flower. Finally I then photograph the flower back in its natural environment (Photo to the left), because of the changing relationships it has eventually killed the flower and has ended up back in its natural habitat where another will grow. I decided to interpret this to show the differing relationships the flower has when put in different environments.

I took influence to do this re-shoot
from my previous photoshoot which encorparated several different ideas to do with relatinships. Previously i had how shadows and their shapes effected the way in which you saw a photograph, how colour could show a persons inner emotions and split self and i then had colour and emotions. To further my ideas i decided to purse one of them thoroughly which was colour and emotions. To do this i have done a photoshoot which manipulates four colours into producing the emotions i’am tring to show. To help to this i have used body lannguage and facial expressions to help show the clear distinction between the different colours. I placed white and pink together as they are much lighter colours and have a purity to them, in anthisis, to this i placed black and red together to create the sense of mystery, and power.

‘‘p i n k and w h i t e’’
For this photoshoot i chose to use the col-
ours pink, white, black and red to convey my idea of how colour and emotions can realte to eachother within my theme of Relationships. Using a white background i used the white and pink powderpaint to be involved with the photoshoot either being thrown and caught on camera using the different shutter speeds or using it to simply cover my model so the emotion could show through using the models facial expressions but stil;l have the colour influence. Using my choice of body language and positions this particular part of the photoshoot had a softer feel to it through the shapes conveyed by the model and the facial expressions. Much of the positions were either the model holding themselves or in smaller positions to show the emotion of innocence. I like the idea of combining my photoshoot with powderpaint as i feel it can either give off an elegant effect or greate a strong powerful one which i used later on in my photoshoot. I then took these images further and digitally manipulated them by changing how the light effected them. This caused an effect seen on the double page spread before and the image on the left, it creates an overcast of brighter colours which works well with my theme as the colours show purity and happiness which i later on contrasted with seperate colours. To present my images i have used different methods such as mirroring and roatation, this is a simple yet effective way of showing my images at different angles.
‘‘R e d and b l a c k’’
For this part of my photoshoot i used the
colours red and black to convey the emotions of anger, strength, power and mystery using powerpaint within my photographs. Simialry to the previous colours i aptured the powderpaint in motion to add to the image itself, for example, in the bottom right i have used this image to show distress adn anger, the powder paint works well for this as it looks like it is exploding out of her head and balck coming down the sides, these colours help refelct it as they are sterotypically known for being angry darker colours. I then used these images to further mnipulate them using Adobe Photoshop, an example of t his was to take
away all the colour and just have the eyes in colour,t his shows the fierceness within the photograph without haveing to use much colour at all, the body language and close up facial shot help to emphasize this by having the face partly obscured by the hands, this shows the model in converying the different emotions of beign stressed, angry and struggling therefore refraining themselves with their hands. I like these images as they show strength within the photographs and the relationship as to how colour can place emphasis on how you see the photograph and the emotion you recieve from it. I think the 4 colours i have chosen work well together to contrast eachother and convery very different things.
H
ere is an example of how black and white can be used in contrast with colour to create a striking central piece. By having the sections taken out of the colour image and replacing them with a black and white version it then allowed me to re-create the shapes and exstend them out of the actual image and onto the page.
Here are two examples of
how i could digitally manipulate my photographs. On the is page i have used two images, one behind the other and changed the blending modes so part of the image belows colours show through. This is how the other colours such as blue, purple and orange have shown through. I think this links with the theme of relationships as it shows the links between the pose and the multiple colours which shows signs of chaos. On th e following page is a series of two images one colour and the other black and white, i then used the black and white image to replace sections of the coloured image within the shapes of the circles, this places more emphasis on the black and white sections of the images. I chose the circle as it is the closest like to the powder paint shapes.
Techniques Cropping
Here
is one scan that i prduced using a combination of different flowers and a range of colours. I chose this colour background as the pink creates a soft iviting background for flowers, however, combining the deep reds and pinks of the flower petals in contrast to the yellow i feel gives the picture a strong focal point. The deep green is also a nice feature to compare against the light pinks of the background as it draws your eye in and up the each individual stem until you reach the colours of the petals.
Here is a series of edits done only by cropping an im-
age. It shows that through just taking one small section of the image five times it can create a completely new image. I like the way in which this technique edits photographs as it only allows you to see part of the photograph which makes the viewer wonder what is in the rest of it.
Rotation
Here are a series of the same pho-
tograph edited only by rotation. There are different types of rotation such as rotating it in angles of 90’as seen above, doing this four times shows ultimately how the photograph can be seen and perceived at the different angles. Next to it is another type of rotation which creates the effect that the image has been mirrored. This is a nice effect as it shows the images at opposing angles, however, they
join together perfectly to reflect one another. On the following page I like the effect that the rotation has when it is combined with repetition. I think it creates a strong piece on its own as it draws your eye in straight away and makes you want to focus on all the separate images to question whether there all the same image? How are they different? This is my favourite effect when using rotation as it is a simple technique which gives off a striking effect.
rota rota

R E P E T I T I O N
Here is a selection of different ways in which
repetition can be used to create impact when doing layouts for images and ultimately what I could and wouldn’t use within my final piece and what options could be explored using this particular style of editing. I like the option of using repetition in a line such as the polygon shapes below, it creates a good effect when the opacity stars off low and gradually gets stronger as it creates a different feel for each separate image. However, I do also like the impact that the repetition gives off within the far right circles. I think it instantly stands out amongst the page and draws your eye towards them. I think this could be an option for one of my images in my final piece as I feel it would give a strong effect amongst other images. I could use repetition in different ways to show a range of different media’s within my final piece, I could use other printing materials apart from photo paper such as, acitiate, tracing paper or materials such as bubble wrap or cling film.

page shows how text can be used amongst images to tell the viewer about them in a creative way. For example a nice way of incorporating a dark image with text is by placing the text over the image in white so it stands out. Another way to have both text and photographs together is by having the text surround the image, this leaves a nice sharp edge between the edge of the picture and the text. I like this as you can choose how big you want the boarder to be between the text and image. However, my preferred style is the writing over the text as it is a smart way of lightening a dark image whilst talking about it and then with a lighter image it allows the text to be clear on the image itself.
MAURIZIO ANZERI Here is an artist whose work is mainl;y created using the technique of sowing. Maurizio Anzeri has done many exhibitions since 2005 and focuses on using different styles of stitching to go over the top of photographs. Much of his work is done to either work and blend in with the over all colour scheme or stand out, to the left are example of both of these styles of work. I like his use of stitching as it becomes part of the photograph and makes it stand out. This is one of th etechniques i could potentially use on my final piece as i think it will make my piece stand out and strong in comparison to if i didnt. It would also work into one of my key theme which is power and strength, (black and red section of my photoshoot), the string could represent this.
sarah dullaway Sarah Dullaway is an artist who uses a combination of colour and black and white photography. I would like to consider using this in my final piece as i like how the combinations work well together and compliment each other. It also shows how i have considered different forms of the photograph and its presentation.
Possible Final Piece Ideas Here i like the idea of using layers to construct the the image, i think it will give it a creative unique style to it.
I like this because i think it is a clever way to constuct your photographs as a whole using small frames. Each section of the photograph could fill each circle and have a unique edit within each circle.
I like the nice way them the ing key
final piece above as it is a simple and of presenting the images and making centre of attention as well as cominobjects and words from the shoot.
I like this style of final piece as it shows a combination of different photographs coming togther to join one whole one. I also like how sections of it are burnt which gives it an vinatge style.
I like the idea of displayign my images in a series of jars in combination with objects from my photoshoots.
Here is a series of images combined with long strings and objects relating to the photographs. I like this idea as i could split it into sections and have the four different colours from my re-shoot all linking togteher with the coloured string and stray the flowerss used in the re-shoot as the objects that are intertwwineed.
I like the layout of this final piece as it shows all aspects of the photograph, however, by having them into a curved bend it allows you to have a different perspective on the photograph.
possible Ideas Idea 1 For my first possible idea I used photographs from
my first relationships interpretation shoot in which my ideas were conveyed about different relationships and how they are shown. Because I had several different objects within the photographs such as the woods, flower petal on the models face and the wooden fence, I used the back grounds textures and shapes to then make a couple of pieces of barbed wire to create a 3D representation of it. I then used the scanner to scan it onto the photograph its self. To incorporate items from my first interpretation shoot of David Spero, I used similar flowers to the ones placed on the models face and also scanned them onto the photograph, this allowed the flowers to be more visible within the shoot, however, it meant they wouldn’t die of start to decay. This was one idea for my final piece as it allowed many physical objects to be in the piece without making it look clumpy or messy. Due to editing the picture the way I have using Adobe Photoshop it has blended the light together differently which creates more colours within the dress. To give the piece more visible colour I would incorporate other materials such a thread which would be sown on thought the piece.
Idea 2 To create my second mock up I have used my most
recent photographs which are of my Re-shoot, showing the relationship between colour and emotion. I have used the same image, one in colour and the other in black and white and then done a simple rotation of 180*. To further edit these images I have used foam board to raise up sections of one photograph and with the other I have placed an image on the foam board and cut down into the image revealing the one below. I did this to parallel the fact that the photographs themselves are the antithesis of each-other and so is this technique. Incorporating the sowing was key to placing emphasis on the strongest shape within the image which is the straightness and power of the arms, I then used string to mimic this by creating lots of straight lines overlaying each-other within the image. Because the main colours of the image were red, black and white, I decided to use the colour opposite to red on the colour wheel and then the colour opposite to that one. This was blue and green. To show differences between the lines I had them vary in thickness. Some were the full amount of embroidery thread and some where only 2 or 3 strands. The different coloured strings add to the colours and chaos that is happening within the photograph and they also complement the deep red of the powder paint nicely.
My final piece stages Here are the stages on how I completed my final piece and why I did it.
Firstly I got four of the same image, two colour and two black and
white. I then chose the shapes that I would like to cut out of them onto a piece of paper, this then allowed me to have a stencil when I cut into each photograph. I drew 3 stencils, gradually the shapes got smaller and smaller and slightly different each time so they over lapped slightly. I then chose the style of image which I wanted at the top and bottom, this was the black and white one, which left the coloured ones for the middle. I then took the top layer and cut the biggest shapes out of it. Then the second which had a slightly smaller shape and finally the last colour one which had the smallest shapes taken out of it. Once I had the shapes cut out of the photographs, I then chose how raised up I wanted each one to be so they weren’t touching. I then cut out four small pieces of foam board and used the glue gun to stick them together. I did this four times on each picture so they were all raised away from each-other. I had the image with the biggest hole on top and gradually going down into the one without a hole. The aim of this technique was to draw the viewer in and really make them look at the photograph. Although my theme within relationships is colour and emotion, I chose the top and bottom two images to be black and white to allow for the coloured string to be added later on. In the middle of the black and white images were the coloured ones, because it had created layers it allowed my to not have to make any holes in them by sowing, instead, I used each layers to hide where the string was stuck.
When adding the sting to the piece, I had to take into account the colours and position of each strand, I also had to consider the thickness and thinness of each individual piece so they worked well together and were evenly positioned. Finally I had to consider the placing of my two key words which I wanted to include on my piece, ‘Power’ and ‘Strength’ as they were the two main emotions I was trying to convey. I attached them subtly and still stuck to using string. I sowed them together onto a piece of string which was the placed within the photographs key parts. These were the arms and then the shadow of the arms. I did not want loads of key words as I think it would distract the viewer from the image itself. After the main piece had been completed I now had to consider how I was going to present it. Because it is a 3D piece I could not use a glass frame, therefore, I used one without and placed a piece of large A1 foam board on-top of it so it was slightly raised away from the frame. I then measured the distances between all the sections so it would be evenly positioned and spray mounted it onto the frame. I then added my final piece onto the foam board by using a combination of spray mount and double sided tape. Once they were stuck together I continued to add the different coloured string which progressed over and onto the frame itself. This helped to merge the frame from just being a standard presentation device and really brought it into the piece and became part of it.

I like that he uses a variation of different objects and locations which is what i placed emphasis on in my first photoshoot. What ideas did you develop from your initial research? I developed different ideas from my intial research by exploring several briefly and then exploring one in my depth through my re-shoot. I like the idea of exploring different options as it shows variation through- AO2 out my work and that i have tried different ideas and if they dont work then i can try something different. Can you give links or comparisons to other artists that have used these techniques, materials and
How did you sustain and develop your investigation?
I sustained my theme throguhout by always exploring atleast one element of colour to convey different emotions, i then always showed how a different environments can affect this and change a persons view on the image as a whole. I then developed my investigation by showing a deeper connection between colour and emotion through my re-shoot, by havign several differnt relationships in my previous shoot it allowed my to have more felxibility as to which ideas worked and if they didnt then i did not have to progress them.
How do these artists relate to your chosen question?
processes?
I have used techniques from two other artists, Maurizio Anzeri and Sanna Dullaway. Maurizio Anzeri uses the technique of sowing over the top of photographs to make specific elements stand out by themselves. He either uses colours which blend into the piece of bright ones to make the piece stand out. This is what i have done for my piece i have used black to hang the key words and the rest bright colours to stand out on their own creating the impression of strength and power.
How did your experimentations help you develop your own design ideas?
They relate to the question by each showing a different interpretation of a relationship. Although My experimentations helped me to develop my own ideas as it showed me what worked and what didnt for they did this some links were clearer than others as many to do with David Spero and Ed Ruscha were my specific photograph. for example, i discovered that sowing actaully into the picture with thick string left much more subtle than Elino Carucci’s which were the relationship between two sepcific people. a hole and scartched part of the photograph, because i wanted to give off a sleeker effect i decided to glue the string uder different sections of th ephotographs layers and behind the frame so it was hidden and looked neat.

How are your ideas relevant to your intentions? My ideas are relevant to my over all intention as i have found a way to explore my relationship clearly by contrasting two very different emotions through my re-shoot. Although i didnt use both sets of images within my final piece i chose my strongest image and how it conveyed my relationship the clearest, this was power and strenght due to the strong lines created throughout the photograph by the arms. This is resembled through the string. My over all ideas were all linked to relationships, however, this idea worked best How have you reflected on your progress and the work you have produced as it has developed? My overall theme is colour and emotion, the reason that i used a black and white image as the top and bottom part of the piece is because i wanted to place emphasis on the colour, however, if i used the colour picture as the main section then the couloured string wouldnt have been seen and stood out as much as it is now. I like how the string is placed over the black part of the image and varied over and inbertween the differernt layers. As my final piece was developing i chnaged and adjusted my ideas to suit how i felt i could get the best over all outcome. I was orignally going to sow, however, i didnt want to make any holes in my piece meaning that i couldnt use the thick embordarry thread that i wanted to as the hole would ruin part of the image, therefore, i had to stick the ends of the string behind each section so you couldnt see it when it was being presented.

What were you hoping to create?
I was hoping to create a piece which involved both different areas of my photoshoot. This would be the pink and white section which showed purity and innocence and the black and red side which showed strength and power. During the 8hour exam i would not have had time to create two seperate pieces and make them link together well, i think it would have looked like two seperate ideas and i couldnt pick between them. So instead i took my best image and purely focused on that.
Did it work?
I think my idea worked well as you can see clearly what the image is trying to convey and and it is emphasised by the string and colours. The actual presentation itself was constucted by choosing specific shapes and then cutting the biggest version out on th etop image and gradually getting smaller until i didnt cut anything out of the bottom one. I chose the specific shapes to represent different parts of the image. The curves are menat to represent the poweder paint and the lack of control you have once its been thrown and the straight sharp lines represent the strength and power within the arms.
How have your ideas evolved over time?
My idea has evolved over time by gradually improving and gathering different research matierial which i could potentially use within my piece. It was key to start with artist research which let me expand and think of my own ideas about how i saw relationships.
How did you select your chosen idea? I selected myt chosen idea by looking at my re-shoot phtooggaphs to see which showed the best relationship between colour and emotion and which was the overall best phtoographic image. I chose What have been the most important influences on my specific image as it had clear strong lines within it which in itself shows power and strength, i our work? then added different techniques to the image to place emphasis on the emotion i wanted to convey. The most important influences on my work has been my previous shoot. It showed me what works well within a phtoograph, what body positions and facial expressions work How did it evolve? and lighting can effect how you see and image itself and the mood the lighting gives off. My ideas evolved gradually as i gathered differernt styles of presenting my work through possible ideas pages and my mock ups. I showed a variaation of differnt ideas and ways to present my final work. I took How does this work reflect your interests as an artist/ ideas from several idea that i saw and different ideas from my own mock ups and research into different techniques. I then put them all together and took the best elements from each to create my final piece. photographer ? I think this reflects my intrest in photographers and artist as it shows how i have taken elemnts of their work and made them my own. It conveys how i have developed them slowly through my work and eventaully studided a set relationship in depth and produced my final piece to represent this.
Main aim of this photo shoot is to show how my research into David Spero has inspired my into doing my first relationships photo-shoot. I will also show how I have interpreted his ideas and made them my own.

Photo shoot ideas: My photo-shoot ideas are to show how natural objects change depending upon their different environments. My first idea was to take photographs of a rose in their natural environment looking full of colour and healthy. My next idea was to take it slightly out of its environment by placing it in a non flowing stream. Then place it in man made objects such as building equipment and bins. I then placed it in a lake. And finally in a puddle on the floor.
Photo shoot evaluation: My ideas worked as when the environment went far from the roses natural one it gradually deteriorated and started to decay. This was key in showing my relationships between natural objects and their original environments. I think the lighting works well together with the colour of the rose as it was a sunny day which meant the warmth and colouring of the sun reflected within the photographs. I digitally edited them to place emphasis on how full of life or how dead I wanted the flower to look. For example if in the puddle picture I took both a coloured image and a black and white image and took away the opacity of the colour leaving a mix between black and white and colour to show the drained and deteriorated look. Here are my contact sheets of my photoshoot.

Photo shoot ideas: For this photo-shoot I wanted to use several ideas and see which one works bets. My first idea is to show the relationship between colour and emotion. The next is to show how shadows can effect and manipulate how you see the photograph and the different mood. The last idea was to show how objects and colour can represent the inner emotion of someone. The idea that works best I will pursue into a re-shoot and possibly use for my final piece.
Photo shoot evaluation: The idea that worked best was how colour can show emotion. It worked well as it was the clearest in what I was trying to convey. When editing in Photoshop it also creates more opportunities to experiment, such as, different colour over lays and blending modes. The lighting of the shoot worked well as it was around 4 in the afternoon which meant it wasn’t too dark or too bright. The lighting reflected each different mood of the photographs well and then allowed me to manipulate them further on Photoshop and place emphasis on what I wanted the viewer to see and think. Here are my contact sheets of my photoshoot.
Main aim of this photo shoot is to show purse my most successful idea from my last photoshoot.

Photo shoot ideas: For this shoot my ideas are to focus on my theme within the theme of relationships which is colour and emotion and how the work together to help convey each-other to the viewer. I plan to use powder paint to convey this idea as it creates a strong colour, however, also places emphasis on it even more because there is not focus on anything else due to the white back ground and white clothing.
Photo shoot evaluation: I think this photo-shoot was successful as it had a strong comparison of colour between the pink and white Vs. black and red. I think it is good to show a strong comparison of different emotions as it only emphasizes more how colour and emotion compliment each-other. Here are my contact sheets of my photoshoot.
