Studyprompted1.manipulationof scaleandproportionsacross perspectives,2.explorationofthe functionalmovementand compositionofadesignatedobject (e.g.,disassemblingthetoothbrush inasequentialequidistantmanner), and3.unfoldingtheobjecttobetter understandvisualrepresentation anddetailedlineconstruction.This drawingwasapproachedlikethe unfoldingofanorigamistructure.

Thisprojectistheresultofa detailedplantstudyconducted duringahighschoolstudent programthesummerbeforeI startedcollege.Theflowering plantthatIchosetostudywas BerberisPinnata,aDicotyledonor dicot,withnet-likevenation patterns,six-petalyellowflowers, anddistinctivespikyleaves.The roughpencilsketchhelpedmeget anunderstandingofthedifferent structuresandcomponentsofthe plantwhichwerecrucialin informingmyRhino-derived interpretationoftheflower. Throughtheuseofrepetitionand knowledgeoftheflower’sgrowth pattern,Iwasabletodevelopa designthatalludedtothelife processoftheplantfromgrowing leavesandroundbudstothe blossomingofthewholeflower. Thisprojecthelpedme understandhowIcanusethe naturalenvironmentas inspirationformydesignwork.

Berberis pinnata Plant study | August 2020

AsasecondaryassignmenttothePlantStudy, wewereaskedtocreateastructurethatwould fitharmoniouslywiththelandscapeatthe BlakeGardensnearUCBerkeley.Icreateda two-storypavilionusingtheBerberisPinnata plantasinspiration.Theimagesshowcrosssectionalmodelsofthestructurefeaturingthe roofandthewoodenstaircase.The orthographicdrawingshighlighthowthe terraceismeanttobethefocalpointofthe pavilionanddrawstheeyetoitsflowershape. Throughthisproject,Ilearnedhowtoportray scale,depth,andmovementinmydesignsas wellashowtosetamoodinmydepictions.

Thisallowedmetoseewithintheobject.The exerciseinspiredmetobuildanactualmodel ofacubic,habitableunitfromBalsawood.
