open source learning high school collaborative project with Yonne Hack

The system is organized into five 90 person cohorts (community) each linked to a specific disciple (interest). I consciously decided community and specific interest are a collective experience, forming a hub. These 90 student hubs became intrinsically linked to how one shares information. A series of bi-modal boundaries spatially signify times of formal/inward focus, and alternatively informal/outward exploration. This high school explores boundaries as organizers of space, the phasing between the specialized and unspecialized. The nature of the wall is explored as boundary, invitation, seclusion, fixed, flexible, expository, focal. The overarching concept developed as the creation of sharing between these five hubs. Circulation brings cohesion to the system and encourages interaction between the five hubs. These spaces are individual specific, but contribute to the greater whole.

INTERACTIVE LEARNING

faithful artist retreat in avocado & lemon grove senior year thesis project

This thesis argues for the articulation of the ground plane and material tectonics to define a sense of place. Threshold established on the ground plane instrumentally shapes spatial sequence and how we understand where we are. The interaction between the physical elements and their embodied non-physical qualities such as history and transformation over time frames how we develop an understanding of place. As a design methodology, I employ a set of defined thematic elements of nouns and verbs as a taxonomical vocabulary of composition. To test this study of ground, material, and tactile experience, a faith-based artist retreat hosts day trippers and artists in residence to wander and discovery. The dispersed program across the twelve acre grove propels one to hyperawareness of the senses through exploration and curiosity. This detail-oriented methodology of materiality creates engagement; a measured set of experiences in a dynamic setting for pause and reflection.

acute hostel for refugees

WINTER 2016

HAVEN HOUSE Relevant to today’s unprecedented influx of the migrant peoples, Haven House takes action to provide housing, community, and hope for refugees for a period of one to four months. Engaging with the local Danish community, the Haven House connects locals with the migrants, migrants to each other, and helps restore identity to the individual. Addressing the thresholds of collective, semi-private, and private, this “home away from home” offers the migrant opportunity, ownership, and belonging.

vellum furniture competition winner Cradle to Cradle Sustainability Winner Scavenging for materials, the quest began with a trip to the lumber store to inquire about their scrap pile. When in line, I happened to befriend a contractor who candidly offered to let me take a peek at the debris at his current job site. Following him to the residential job site, I hit the jackpot. Pine wood from the recently demolished railing, redwood stakes, and poplar strips all from the dumpster soon filled the back of my truck and accompanied me to studio. After glue, clamps, and bending steel, the elegant coffee table emerged a product of beauty with a past of waste. Hints of the past and whispers of the materials’ history still show through— touches of white paint from the railing, subtle weathering patina from exposure on racks in the steel yard. The friction fit assembly of the steel legs to the wood mosaic table top allow for easy transportation and continued life as the compliment of my living room.
