FAR AWAY AND CLOSE TO HOME

Far Away And Close To Home is a collection of conversations, memories and feelings all surrounding the subject of food. From being in a stable environment for an extended period of time, to living away from home, makes a huge difference to the culture, behaviour and environment you are surrounded by. No matter where you are, it is the small home comforts, such as food, which tell a story and come with fond memories whether they are old or new.

Sitting on the sofa before school watching kids TV getting engrossed and my toast would go cold whilst Dad sat opposite, eating his granola and telling me off for being too slow.

When I was 5 years old I had my first experience with egg. It got to about half way down, then came back up with everything else in my stomach. I have never eaten egg since.

Dinner at my mums, home made syrup sponge! Reminds me of my Grandad and Dad who washed the pots once a year!

My dog licked the marmite off my toast once, I’ve never seen her pull such a funny face!

I used to hate bananas, but I used to watch Dad eat bananas and cereal and I wanted to be grown up.

I can’t handle the spice.

Going to Grandma’s house as a kid and collecting the chicken eggs with her to start baking.

Mum used to tell me...Carrots help you see in the dark Kierran...But I still couldn’t.

Eating pepperoni cheese pizza with my family every Wednesday when I was little.

Coming home from college waiting for thai fish cakes to be ready.

When you can’t cook a proper meal when you’re younger, a fish finger sandwich always saves the day.

I simply don’t understand courgettes.

Before I left for University Me, Mum, Dad and Grandad would go for an indian buffet nearly every Sunday. They don’t taste the same down here.

I remember the first time I ever ate curry- I didn’t know what to order so I just copied my friend.

I’m awkward with pasta. I have my sauce seperate. It’s like two different meals for me. People who have the two mixed are crazy.

Starting student life and being surrounded by my worst fear...beans!

Falafel reminds me of my girlfriend and I really do like falafel!

Roast dinners remind me of all my family being together and being so full you can’t move.

When you come home what do you want for tea?
