ELLIEDESIGN SANGHANI PORTFOLIO
My name is Ellie Sanghani and I am a second year design student at Loughborough University. I have prepared my placement portfolio with great pride and joy. Why is this? Well, it reflects the hard work I have done during my A-Levels and first two years at a university which has given me a great opportunity to develop my skills. I would like to introduce you to my portfolio starting with various projects that I have completed during my time at university. My portfolio also includes specific pieces of art work that I developed during my A-Levels. I hope you enjoy reviewing my portfolio as much as I have in preparing it and I look forward to your feedback.

PROJECT RESEARCH 4kW PV system will have an annual output of 3600kwh and will save ÂŁ870 per annum. To charge an iPhone it will consume 1% of the energy produced by the PV cells in a day. However, today people have more than one device e.g. iphone, ipad ipod etc. Over 2 Billion people today own
A
smartphones alone.
BRIEF
To design a product to create a beautiful and responsible solution, to a real life challenge. Design a Product that Supports Domestic Solar PV System.
OVERCHARGING DEVICES
Once the tablet/iPhone or any other electronic device that charges in a similar fashion has completed its charge, it will continue to use energy if it remains connected to the source. When the device is fully charged it will continue to use a small amount of energy. The charger will thereafter, continue to replenish the supply of energy. This is called TICKLE CHARGING. This is an unnecessary use of energy that is better served in other places.
STRATAGY
A product that is designed to work alongside a domestic PV system and therefore more energy-efficient.
BATTERIES
The best battery for this type of product is a Lithium ion battery (has a high energy density) as it is rechargeable and also has a slow loss of charge.
3-4V at 1000mA. An iPhone uses 10.5Wh and takes 1hr 48mins to charge. Charging devices for an approximate total of 3hrs. A 30Ah, 12V battery will last 17.2hrs

7hrs therefore a device will charge for 7hrs. The Lithium battery would therefore discharge in less than 3days, with only 1 device. With the timer-app feature the battery would last for approximately 8.6days with one device and 3days with 3 devices. The average person sleeps for
DESIGN PROPOSAL
My proposal is for a product that would act as a charging station. The user would be able to charge their device at a port. This station will have a rechargeable battery. The user can download an app on his/her phone to enable the user to set a time for the device to be charged. When the time is up, the charging station will automatically shut down.
LOGIC BEHIND PROPOSAL
1 Device low in battery, needs to be charged.
2 The charging station is a more energy-efficient way of charging your device. Charge the station during the day so the user is able to charge their device over night.
3 Connect the device to the station. LEDs next to the port will light up showing that a device is connected to the station.
Set Time for Charge 1.00 hr
Today most people charge their devices overnight ready to use on the following day. Majority of cases the device will be left on charging for longer than neccessary, therefore the device will be overcharged. On a continued basis overcharging wastes energy, reduces efficiency of the battery and could make the device unsafe.
CEED
Charging, Energy-Efficient Device 6 The station will then shut down automatically, saving energy.
5 LED will switch off indicating when the device is fully charged
4
App should be used to set the time for the period the device requires charging.

RESEARCH SKETCHES
It was found that the individual rods were not hot enough to curl the hair as expected and could become too hot to hold.
BRIEF: Redesign this simple hair
The bulky rectangular shape of the heating pack was found to be uncomfortable and difficult to carry.
curling appliance for a luxury market.
ASSIGNMENT PART 1:
The first 6 weeks of the assignment involved analysing the original product and identifying improvements in all aspects.
CHALLLENGE: Design a unique
solution to introduce an improved curling appliance to the market and addressing, the issues involving user.
The original product was a Mark Hill hair curling appliance. The silicon rubber rods are heated inside the casing, removed and placed into the users hair to produce high quality curls. However, during the research stage it was found that this product was discontinued. Individually we were required to research and disassemble the product.
09
The Casing was difficult to dissassembled due to composite materials and permanent fixings used
The metal plates used to heat up the rods were made up of a number of layers, held together using permanent fixings (rivets). This is poor for sustainability.
The damaged hair became tangled within the sticky silicon rods.
The rods did not wrap tightly or comfortably around the hair. When wrapped in the hair, the rods did not sit securely and therefore fell out
Unattractive packaging that may not appeal to all users.
It tool up to 30mins for the rods to heat up. The maximum temperater of the rods is 120C. From research it was found that this would have little effect on the hair as standard hair curling appliances go up 200C.
Group Work Done with: Chloe Poulter, James Richardson, Luke Richards, Jack Schneider, Moe Qureshi
WORKING WITH Temperature Rises
Power up to start heating from the rechargeable battery. A blue light will be shown when the rods are cold. A pulsating red light means the rods are ready for use.
Examples of various designs.
Place rods back into case and close lid.
Flip open the lid (simliar to an iPad case)
ASSIGNMENT PART 2:
From all the analysis and research completed on your product re-deisgn it taking into account, Form, Function, Sustainability, Feasabilty and the User’s Experience.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
Allow to cool for a moment on the Wrap individual rods into clients hair. heatproof mat (interior of the lid). These will hold securely allowing you to work on other things e.g. clients make up.
Rechargeable battery, USB Port
If LEDs are flashing white, charge appliance from any USB power source.
Recycled textile outter case sold in various designs (shown above) or can be personally customized by client Smooth silicon rods protect hair while gently heating and curling hair.

Research Board Task Goals
(Goals set by the person in their life) - Wants the freedom and ability to experience the world as well as being successful with his business without financial difficulty. - To make as many contacts as possible and forming strong relationships with others. - Be able to have as much knowledge about his area of work and a better understanding of what people want.
Our app is a proximity based search tool, used to find others via a self tagging system. A user will be able to link themselves with the relevant skills they have and in return searchfor people who are offering skills they need to contribute to the established, maintenance and running of a company. The range of the app can be set by the user, allowing the freedom of choice whether the range is between a mile and 200. Having set the parameters, the app locates people with the same or similar links to the area in a circular radius determined by the users current loacation. The app allows the user to create and display advertisments, so that people looking for jobs can easily connect with others in the hope that this may aid the livelyhood of some students. It offers a built in payment system which allows users to directly pay clients, view incoming and outgoing transactions and a history of transactions. The app integrates features, creates a fluid and logical movement through the app, with actions that are immediately obvious or instantly understandable.
13
Application Concept
Starting up your own business is a particularly risky and dawnting task as there is much room for failure and rejection. This app will allow potential entrepreneurs to get in contact with possible employees e.g. graphic designers, coders etc. It will allow them to contact these people as well as looking at past work, reviews, payments arrangments etc. The app will generate a list of recommended people that could be contacted using the information they have given, which will include there location, list of possible coders and designers. The app will also allow connections through other forms of social media ie. facebook, twitter etc.

About the Business
Del Mont is a luxury design company that produces high quality desirable display, storage and security devices. This is targeted towards a high end market.
Need for the Application
Archie liked the idea of the app and thought it would be an efficient way of getting in contact with others who could help him start his business. ‘Sounds like a really great idea, really helpful. It will make anyone who is trying to start up their own business a lot easier. I wouldn’t have had any need to use the website up until this point. However now that I am ready to speak to coders and sponsors, I feel that it will help me find what I want a lot quicker than just surfing the net.’

User Testing and Development Feedback From my testing I found that the user liked the bubbles as they were fun and different, howere as this is a buisness it needs to looks more proffesional. “Visually the app will look better with a specific colour scheme, instead of many different colour bubbles. I do like the idea but the rember to make sure it is professional visually. Epecially on the setting drop down bax as there are so many bubble and looks very busy. Users may get frustrated as they could be tapping the wrong buttons.”
A student has a possible However, he has no idea who to contact to business idea. develope his concept
He picks a designer from the list and checks the reviews.
He downloads, opens and registers with LinkLine.
He then messages the designer he has picked.
Using the GPS Location Setting, he searches for designers.
Closes the app and waits for a relpy.
BRIEF: The coursework has been
set together with the O2 customer Experience Design Team. Your brief is to design a smartphone app that is aligned with one or more of the following trends; entrepreneurship, Social entrepreneurship or the crowdfunding of projects or campaigns.
My initial sketch sheets were handed out. This is shown in the images below. They were then tested and used as if they were the actual application. All the sketches are the intended size of the iPhone 6.
“ I really like the design, its very visual and stands out. It is also has a simple layout therefore easy to navigate.” To ensure the accuracy of this evaluation and testing I used my sketches and stuck them to my iPhone so my user can is able to visualise how to use the app in a real life setting and give my the feedbake required to improve the design.

Creating a simple, small promotional product led to the design and development of the mould tool (the core of the project). 6 weeks of development was completed resulting in the final mould tool design. A number of constraints were given. These were down to the ability of the injection moulding machine and the tools available for use. This influenced the change in how the widget would be created.

These 6mm pins hold the two mould halves in place (2pins). There is also three 3mms pin set in the centre of the mould tool. (Purple and Yellow Parts) All bolts go through the top of the mould half as this will ensure the block itself remains even when in the injection moulding machine. Any tilting can cause the LDPE to set unevenly. (Beige) Top Mould Half
These inserts attach to the top half of the mould. This insert is made up of 5 pieces as it was the best way of removing the insert after cooling. (Grey, Gold and Brown)
In total there are 9 pins. Two are used to hold the mould halves together only. The other seven pins also do this as well as holding the slit inserts in place. (Purple)
EXPLODED VIEW In total there are 12 bolts. 6 with a diameter of 6mm and 6 with the diameter of 4mm. All with a length of 20mm. These bolts go all the way through the top mould half and 5mm in to the insert. As some of the bolts are small, several will be used for extra stability. (Yellow and Beige)
This page conveys the exploded view of my mould tool. Labelling all the parts/inserts involved and gives further detail about each part.
These inserts produce the central cylinders and the lip used to lock the parts together. These inserts attach to the top half of the mould The hollow cylinder is cut into two parts so it can be removed easily. (Green and Dark Brown) These inserts produce the slits on the widget that hold the earplugs in place. (Dark Green, Blue and Violet)
The logo will be created using the milling machine. The logo will be embossed on to the widget.

Art has influenced my life. I enjoy working in different media, forms and styles. Art is a subject without limits and has encouraged me to be as creative and imaginative as possible. This has benefited my design work as it has pushed me to be more free-thinking and broadened my range of ideas. It has remained with me while at university and is something I still enjoy working on along-side my course.
